Proud to be Welsh
I am named for my grandmother Ethel Van Hinkel. Her maiden name was Cuffin. She was the first one born in the family in the United States. Her family immigrated from Wales. She was very proud to be a Welsh American. The highest point in Chester county, Pennsylvania, is on a mountain named Welsh Mountain. The site is owned by new enterprise quarry. I was granted permission to hike to the High Point on the mountain right next to the quarry, where they dig white sandstone which is used for construction, septic mounds, and even golf course sand traps. A big thank you to George Zimmerman for granting me access and coaching me to the High Point. There was a small American chestnut tree growing at the top of the mountain. I chose a large red oak close by for my climb. From the top, I could see Blue Mountain way to the north. I could see hills to my south that may have been in Maryland. The view of the quarry was stunning. I was visited by a few crows who seemed interested in my activity. My grandmother passed away almost 25 years ago. I enjoyed remembering her today during my climb of Welsh Mountain.
Nice day for a climb! As usual you made me look it up on google maps. We have friends that own land in Bradford County but live just east of this climb in Chester Springs. Stay safe.
Hi @Van - to your comment @7:07 - I am curious what the high point of Philadelphia county would be (Chestnut Hill is my guess). The 4 surrounding suburban counties in SE PA are quite large with the exception of smaller Delaware county / DelCo. Enjoyed your family history share here.
Hey Nate! You got it. Chestnut hill is the high point. It appears to be in the backyard if a church there. I need help connecting with the church with hopes of getting permission.
@@vanwags I have some extended family not far from that neighborhood - would be glad to reachout for the cause :)
Do you know exactly what they mined there??
They mine quartzite to be used for aggregate stone of various sizes for construction.
FYI it is still an active quarry.
