    Sonata forms has 3 sections : The exposition , the development and Recapitulatión .
    The exposition starts peacefully and then while the song goes on the tension starts to take place till we came back to the recapitulation where we return home after the journey ( Tension).

    Sonata Form is so much better than whatever rambling and on and on form the baroque period used. I like much of the Romantic period forms and modern instrumental (video game, tv, movie) music styles as it uses loosely the Sonata Form, but deviates in order to conform to a story to tell a story without feeling to rigid.

    Sometimes though, the original key isn’t stated until the transition, so wrong key first theme is recapitulation. I’ve seen this primarily in Mozart. 2 examples that come to mind are K 545 which states the first theme in F and Symphony no. 1 in Eb K 16 that states the first theme in C minor.

    What sets this video apart from other explanations, for example on Wikipedia is the mention of themes. Listening to others one would not realise that the 2+ themes are wound into the exposition development and recap. I was condufused until today.

    Haydn's sonatas are without peers by the way. One day everyone will get his greatness.

    Nice explanation. There is a mistake on the slides - at 2:48 "second theme" should be "second key" and again, on the right, at 2:55 (actually, second theme is a very rare choice at this point). It would also be helpful if you were to add an analysis of a piece or two with audio. Thanks!

    I have one question...should the second and third movements of the sonata be written using the same formula as the first movement? Second(adagio) and third(presto) movements also ,,exposition+development+recapitulation"?

    • @jorelt8141
      @jorelt8141 4 роки тому +1

      In most cases the 2nd mvt is a preparation to the 3rd mvt/ last mvt (Like moonlight sonata). Also the last movement can be written in sonata rondo form (AB, AC, AD...). I'm pretty sure a sonata piece only needs 1 mvt to be in sonata form(if this is the case. It should be the most important mvt).

    • @elaineblackhurst1509
      @elaineblackhurst1509 4 роки тому +1

      Giorgi Baliashvili If the first movement is in sonata form, the second will be different; it could be in ABA form, variation form, binary form (AB), et cetera.
      A third movement could be a dance type movement, either a Minuet (three beats in a bar), or a Scherzo (three beats but played one-in-a-bar).
      A fourth movement could be a rondo (ABACA), another sonata movement, variations (if not already used), or something different.
      The outline above is flexible, you could have two, three or four movements using some or all of the types mentioned above, and in any order (though a sonata form movement would normally come first).

      The second movement can be in sonata form, although that’s not the most common. An example of a sonata form second movement is in Beethoven’s Piano Sonata no. 1 in F minor where 3 out of 4 movements are in sonata form. Second movement is in a truncated sonata form or what I like to refer to as Sonatina Form, the development section is replaced by a brief bridge to the recapitulation. And the fourth movement of that same sonata uses an atypical key for the second theme. First theme is in F minor, second theme is in C minor. Typically, when the final movement is in sonata form, it’s not as rigorous and typical as the first movement sonata form. Moonlight Sonata though is the exception, in that sonata, the first movement is in that Sonatina Form and the third movement is in your textbook sonata form, with a developmental coda as is typical for Beethoven.
      More common forms for the second movement include:
      Ternary Form(the large type without repeat signs, not the small type with repeat signs that you find in dances)
      Rondo, usually a 5 part rondo
      Theme and Variations
      Other forms that are less common than either those 3 or Sonatina Form, but can still show up in second movements include:
      Dance, such as a Minuet and Trio
      Binary Form
      Fugue
      So really, the second movement is the most free in terms of the form, anything goes.
