This only works on the 1001 models in the us. And with all swap methods the system is reading the wrong TOC for the disc in use so usually music will be distorted, wrong, or not play at all, and there will probably be other glitches.

I don't know if it's because Vib Ribbon has some kind of protection against this or what, but honestly it's probably best to use an emulator to play the original disc, or find a Japanese PS1 or PS2.
Good question; I have no idea. I'm willing to bet that, because PS1 and PS2 are region locked, PS3 has to respect the region locking for contractual reasons. There might be a way using soft-mods or something, but I don't have experience with that on the PS3. You might be better off finding a PS1 for cheap, or hunting down a Japanese PS2, which is my preferred way. PS3 supports region locking PS3 games, but apparently very few publishers used it, so you can play a bunch of Japanese PS3 games on a stock US system with no mods or janky tricks. Good luck; let me know if you find anything!
+ashzify Unfortunately this method doesn't work with a PS2. There are tricks you can use with a memory card holding special files. I'll do a video if/when I do it to my PS2.

@@fakegamerguy2279 With a PAL PS1 you'll not run intro framerate issues when booting an NTSC game. But if you'd install a modchip in the console you won't even have to do the disc swap
It seems to me that you not only risk scratching the discs but wouldn't it be bad for the PlayStation to be left on all the time? Alternately, you'd have to stop (remove paper or plastic from button) & start it the same way every time. Am I missing something? I presume you can shut the lid once you have got it going, as it thinks the lid's down already. You'd have to leave the paper in or it would stop before the lid was closed. Will it access the memory card each time you start again?
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, there is a risk that you could scratch the CD. If you're dead set on playing Japanese games I would generally recommend buying a Japanese PS2. I found mine locally for around $40 a while back. You don't need to leave the PlayStation running while it's not in use; this method is used to bypass the region check when the disc is booting. The lid can be left open or closed, but I would suggest closing it after you've booted the game. You can leave the paper/plastic jammed into the lid button. If you've done it correctly the button will be depressed fully, so opening/closing the lid shouldn't affect anything. Memory cards should work per usual.
How come Japanese discs don't play on North American PlayStations? I thought you were on the same system as them. In Australia & in most of the world, including England, we're on PAL (Phase Alternating Line) but you & Japan are on NTSC (National Television System Committee). Is there some slight difference between Japanese & American?
NTSC (NTSC-J in Japan) and PAL are different video standards. The reason you hear them in discussions about import games is because, at least with retro consoles, the games had to be programmed to output at a 29.97 or 59.94 frames per second for NTSC, and 25 or 50 frames per second for PAL. As a result, there is some amount of incompatibility between, say, a US copy of Super Mario World and a European Super Nintendo. If the game boots at all, it will run either too fast or too slow. What we're looking at between North American and Japanese consoles is "region locking." Basically, companies implement region locks specifically to prevent games from one region being played on another. For example, if you were in the 90s and wanted to play Gran Turismo 2 before it came out in America, you could theoretically import a copy from Japan, potentially at a reduced cost, before it ever comes out in America. With the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and to an extent the NES, this was a physical design change that prevented cartridges from being inserted into the console at all. Once the plastic that prevented the cartridges from being inserted is removed, there is no software lock that prevents the game from booting. Once consoles started using discs, they had had to start using software and firmware (software that's embedded in the hardware) to check what region the game was meant to be played in and compare that to the region of the console. What the "swap disc" method does force the console to read the region-specific data from a game that belongs to the same region as the console. Once the check has been performed, the console will not check the region again until it detects the lid has been opened or the console has been rebooted. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. If you have any other questions please let me know; I'll try to respond faster than a quarter of a year later.
@@fakegamerguy2279 Thanks for that very detailed information. So am I correct in thinking that if the Japanese & US games weren't region locked, they'd be compatible?
Yes. PlayStation 3 games, for example, are not region locked by default like the PlayStation and PlayStation 2. Instead, they *supported* region locking, but it was up to the publisher to enable the region locks or not. As a result, most PlayStation 3 games that I'm aware of are not region locked. Dev kits (special versions of the console developers used for creating and testing games) generally did not have region checks, so they could play games from any region. Additionally, mod chips were a popular way to disable the region check on older consoles.
