    Beautiful cars those Mk11's. Apparently only 3003 were ever made. Thanks.

      Despite the ultra high price, $10,000, Ford lost money on each one sold! It was produced for only two years with about 2,550 sold in '56 and only 444 in '57. An estimated 1,500 survive today, as they have always been treasured. Have a very happy and healthy 2023, Bob!!

    The pedigree of the Mark ll was impeccable. The chief stylist was John Reinhart, and the chief body engineer was Gordon Buehrig. There were some Ford family dynamics that put Bill Ford in charge of the project, because he was really into design, as his father had been, and as his brothers were not. Eleanor Ford leaned on her eldest son, Henry ll, to give more important roles to his brothers, and the Mark ll was part of the deal. Even though the car was just what Bill Ford wanted to honor his father, $1,000 loss on each car was just too much to absorb. You could buy two Lincoln Premiers or three Thunderbirds for the price of one Mark ll.

      With 20/20 hind sight, do you think a 4 door would have saved the project... as well as reducing the loss on each unit? Case in point, Rolls Royce made money in that price range.

      @@carshowreporter Good Lawd, girl! No, I really don't. Yes, Rolls-Royce made money in the ultra-premium marketplace, but they didn't have the overhead of Ford Motor Company, nor the demands for profitability. Despite similar pricetags, the Mark ll and the Silver Cloud were not really competitors to any appreciable degree. For instance, I doubt they worried about the other one poaching their customers. Continental was its own animal, and so was Rolls-Royce. There's so much more I'd like to add, but this isn't the forum for it.

      @@carshowreporter There is one observation about Rolls-Royce pricing for the American market I want to share. My old friend, Silver Cloud George, paid $17,500 for his new Royce in 1961; my folks paid $18,500 for our house in 1963. That was a fairly stiff price for an old, albeit large, home back then. But the similarity of the two figures intrigued me. What I discovered was that for decades the price of a new R-R in the United States, and the average home price were practically the same. People who bought a Rolls-Royce did so to hang on to it. Such a concept was heresy to the American automobile industry.

      Very interesting observation, Tom. I would tend to agree with your assessment of the Rolls Royce buyer in England and Europe, less so in this country. Many owners here traded in their cars within a few years, partially due to the tax advantages of leasing. All of the owners I have known owned multiple cars, from the " common " to other " exotic " . One time, I used to accompany a co-worker at a Lotus/Citroen dealer we worked for, drive around to various estates on the gold coast of Long Island to start the owner's cars once a week. Quite interesting! Of course, we only met one of the staff.

    Even at 87.5 still seems like a good investment, it's not as if the production numbers will increase. Bring back pale green and baby blue metallics !

      It is on the high side, but, as you pointed out, there is a limited number of these hand built coupes, and never to be built again. Although this was from 2019, and prices are rising, this video may be interesting: ua-cam.com/video/Z_5mtzjV_SU/v-deo.html I miss colors, too!!!! Have a very happy and healthy 2023 PT&DnC !!!!

    Wow, they should gotten a lot more.
    This guy, (I won't call him an auctioneer) has no chant whatsoever.

    • @carshowreporter
      @carshowreporter  Рік тому +1

      I have found the more " exclusive " auctioneers do not use the traditional chant. Remember, people are bidding from around the world and many do not have English as a first language. Plus, the chant is to keep bidders listening closely. Here the cars themselves achieves intense attention. How much do you think this MkII should have brought, Johnnyc drums?
