One of the best practice rounds of all time. Pres being stoic, Ricky's banter, Uli's putting woes, & Jerm's stories made this great content for one of the best! Goodluck to you guys....
Everyone is right, spit outs do happen to proper pace and positioned puts. Occasionally, shit happens, but that is extremely rare. Most spit outs were thrown too hard, with the wrong disc angle or to the wrong spot on the basket. In my life, I have had one spit out that was in my opinion a perfect putt. Low, right pace, nose down and I don’t know how it came out. I was picking up my mini and not looking after it was in and I looked up to see it on the ground. Sometimes the disc grabs the chains strangely and it finds a way back out.
Ya Uli wasn’t necessarily wrong, but he explained it so poorly and acted as if that was the only thing needed to avoid spitouts and that’s just not true. Plus, nobody is good enough to truly “not aim for dead center” on 20+ foot putts. You’ll take right down the middle every damn time
Paul's point makes complete sense to most people, but Ricky and Jerm were in full roast mode so it was hard to get the point across. If the basket had a heatmap of the % to catch with every location/angle/speed, there should be a theoretical ~100% location/angle/speed. Most players have nearly ~100% at 5ft in most conditions, but when the wind blows or the angle changes, that can drop to 99.5%. That's still a high enough % that if it misses, the player would attribute that to bad luck. Paul's saying that when that's the case, if you adapt your putt, you could bring that back to ~100%
Uli breaking the rules of disc golf by "Nicing" the shot midflight at 11:35 . Everyone knows the speed of sound is faster than a disc, and when you yell "nice" while midflight, it will catch up with the disc and change its flight path from the sound waves. Lol. On a different note, i love watching Ricky play..always so vibrant and nice and full of conversation. Love it.
In regards to spit-outs. I think we all can agree that some baskets catch a disc in more situations than others. Even Uli would agree to that. Like, you can't argue a basket without chains will catch more discs thrown at it than one with chains. That's just a physics fact. So then the discussion that needs to happen is, which baskets have an acceptable amount of "spit-outs" to the most amount of players? I think Uli seems to think all of the ones used on tour are acceptable, while Jerm thinks there are certain baskets used on tour that aren't acceptable. So, just hold a test at Worlds with a bunch of different baskets lined up and have all the players test them all, then give their feedback. Collect all that info and then choose the basket(s) that most players prefer and make sure those are used at all tournaments on tour. This doesn't seem like that difficult of an issue to resolve. The PDGA just needs to step in and regulate the baskets.
I have the same wireless mic the guys use on Jomez and sometimes they just cut out. The one on Prez probably just cut out more. It's not something done in post. I've heard a lot of these cutouts over the years. Not perfect technology, unfortunately.
I'm 40:37 into it and the golf analogy for disc golf putting is ball golf putting. You could roll the ball clean over the middle of the cup to the other side and down a hill if you come in too hot. Doesn't matter how centered it is. It's having a good combination of the two is when the stroke is good.
The difference is a disc golf basket is made to "catch" a disc. When you hit multiple chains on the way to the center but it doesn't catch, maybe the basket is partially to blame?
@FormerAmericanIdol Eh, a golf ball cup/hole is meant to "catch" a golf ball putt also. If the ball is blasted directly over the middle of the cup and doesn't go in, is the cup to blame or the golfer who could've applied less speed? Some baskets definitely suck. PDGA should figure out the best one overall and make it the standard and let the chips fall where they may at that point. Lots more technology involved in disc golf baskets than ball golf holes/cups which are all the same.
You can tell Ricky, Jerm, and Uli have been friends for so long. Haven't heard this much laughter on a practice round in a while. And then there's Andrew P. hangin on the side lines trying to wiggle into the convo. This was an enjoyable practice round to watch for sure!
Spit outs will always exist. There are ways to minimize them, but that may also reduce your chance of hitting where you want. I think a pure spit out is one where you heart the putt and the disc comes straight back. To me, it looks like the edge of the disc hits the top of an individual link. The chain compresses on impact, gravity straightens the chain, and since the edge is still on top of the link, it gets ejected straight back. Changing the shape of the links may be the solution. Diamonds instead of ovals maybe.
Absolutely correct. I put hard, it works well for me because it eliminates the variable of height which I struggled with. Even if I hit a basket "perfectly" there is a chance I spit out because of the pace I put on my putts, and I'm okay with that. Ricky and Germ aren't listening to Paul when he talks, there is an objectively "right" speed to put with that will not cause spit outs. In their minds that pace is too slow, they want to jam it center pole and have it stick every time.
gannon does all the time. Cause he putts too hard, and it happens to ricky too. but yea it was more about paul kinda just rambling and taking forever to make the point, when generally you should aim at the center of the basket.,
I mean, yes he was correct about the super short distance aspect, but he took forever to explain it and acted like it was a fool proof method. That’s really only for 10 foot or less putts.
Any mortal human experiencing the slip that Ricky had on 10's tee would have probably needed an ambulance to get out of there. That was an incredible display of raw athleticism and balance just to stay upright. Not to mention throw it 350ft at the same time w/just his arm while his body was in slipstream mode. Those things are instinctual ...... there's no thinking there. Pure ability. And power.
It was impressive to stay upright and deliver that good of a throw but most people wouldn’t need an ambulance. Most people fall and shit but your not needing an ambulance, you just walk it off
With all the discussion on wet/slick tee pads, why can't the PDGA or host put tarps over the tee pads whenever there is expected rain and then remove them once the rounds start? This wouldn't work for raining rounds, but seems like an easy fix to a common problem.
or just run around with a leaf blower once in the morning or after the rain, or there are several other things you can do. These pads seemed like they had dirt / sand on them.
I like the idea of the new 18th but I definitely agree that it's a lot less difficult. Putting on old 18 looked so stressful and when a tournament is hanging in the balance that makes for extremely entertaining situations. This new hole has none of that risk. Sure it's over water, if I was playing it would be a nightmare for me, but these are the pros, and they just won't mess up those water carries. Imo if they could make it a par 4 and bring the island closer to the landing zone that would be ideal, because I like the idea of eagle for this hole but it looks too risky as is when birdie is so easy to get
Uli is absolutely right in regards to the spit-out conversation. But even if he wasn’t, Jerm and Ricky talking over him constantly and laughing at what he says like he’s an idiot just shows their immaturity. Uli handled it so well! If Jerm got teamed up on he’d have such a dummy spit and storm off.
They’re three best buds. Honestly when you have a personality like Ulis there’s gonna be a lot of time when you want to be taken seriously but you’re just not going to be due the way you usually act
@@Doesntevenmatterr I typically agree with that take, but in this case Uli said multiple times he was trying to be serious for a minute. Like 3 or 4 times at least he had to say it. He also wasn't the one to bring up spit outs. Ricky and Germ brought it up to make fun of him(which is fine!), but then at least give Uli a chance to make his case.
he was talking slow and not being clear about his point. I think the overall point the card was making, is that aiming horizontally center is the best practice, and unless you're inside 15 aiming vertically low isn't always a great idea. Paul just wasn't communicating well and the rest of the card got tired of what he was doing. He was also trying to be a contrarian, as he has done pretty much his whole life.
@@aoeugb he could have verbally clearly made his case in 5 seconds. He was having a hard time verbalizing it and taking forever, and honestly it wasn't really a great point.
At 11:23 did anyone else think something hit the base of the basket? when jerm hits the tree, I had to go back and look, but it was just someone closing something.
Ulis argument about spit outs is the difference between someone who coaches and teaches classes breaking down each aspect of the game very specifically on a regular basis and someone who doesn’t. He’s not wrong at all, the others just haven’t actually really thought about that very very specific part of their game. They just do it naturally 99% of the time.
Need a putting game style heckler doubles. Baseketball style distraction rules and if someone misses a putt, other team has a choice to make that putt and swap stroke count for the hole.
Not really, it's common in many sports. You have to put game face on when you are playing and focusing 100 % on what you are doing on the course/field etc.
Uli is right on the spit out point. Jerm and Ricky went overboard talking over him and making fun of him, probably because they couldn't bring themselves to admit he was right.
Uli's right about putting lower in the headwind. Jerm's right about Uli gaslighting them all the time. Ricky's right to make fun of them both. Pres is right to stay out of it. Also, the "poor Uli" talk is nonsense to me lol. He's the constant contrarian and deserves the ribbing when he finally gets it. All in good fun, of course.
It's fun to watch Uli get riled up, but I think he's also totally right. We should stop blaming poor basket designs and just learn how to putt on them.

Did Uli just leave his putter in the basket :D at 26:38
EDIT: At 27:58 Brad brings it back. What would Uli do without that man. Go Brad! 😆
and then paul debating he did not putt it XD classic
Ricky trash talking is so funny to watch 😂
"that house is sick... if it wasn't in Emporia" lol
Talk about throwing stones in cool houses... hahaha

Injecting Ricky into the Jerm/Uli social dynamic is chaotic evil, and absolutely incredible to watch. Thanks as always for the content Jomez crew.

The big jerm ricky uli argument on hole 16 was hilarious lol. "Your neo from matrix and were all getting shot" 😂
Ricky's Energy is infectious
The part that completes my day! Thanks Jomez!
Jerm: "That was the exact same miss."

The mic did Prez dirty
Why
@@Doesntevenmatterr I dunno, you'd have to ask the mic

Ricky needs to be a caster one time XD
Paul is correct on spitouts. You never see the pros consistently nosedown putting, with proper pace, spit out unless there's freakish wind conditions.
I completely agree, I putt on the harder side at times, and yes spit outs annoy me, but it happens.
