    Good to see you out there ripping and having fun in some pretty roughed up snow. Great review - and thanks for the hand flex of the ski.

      Last few weeks of the season at Stowe had some VERY bumpy conditions. It was a fun change and good for testing stability and counter-flexing and stuff like that.

    Thanks for another great review Jeff, I have been waiting for this one! I own Liberty Origin 112 and V82, love them both. I sold my Masterblasters this season and need to replace with ~ 100, so the 2 candidates are the Origin 101 and the Ranger 102 FR, which you mentioned in the review. It would be cool to own three pairs of skis from Liberty but I am pretty impressed with the short time I have had on the 102 FR (184 cm, all groomer). Carving was pretty impressive, you can really get them up on edge, and unlike the M5 or Bonefide lock, the turn shape was quite finessable. I was to do pretty short driven short turns as well as long arcs. While I was not sure about them before I got them on snow because they are quite heavy, they did not ski heavy because of the the low swing weight and felt quicker and more dynamic than the Masterblasters inspite of being wider. Good carving is quite important to me, but I am also intending to use MNC shift on which ever ski I decide on for quick tour and side country so the lower weight of the 101 plus a bit better float are good attributes. I am assuming the FR is the better carver and is more damp than the Origin 101 but can you say if it's significant? Thanks!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 роки тому

      Great questions. Is the 102 a better carver? I think the answer is yes, but it's such a close comparison and I don't even think it's really fair to just say it's objectively better at carving. I think some skiers might prefer the way the Origin carves over the Ranger. They're very close. I think the Ranger has lighter swing weight and I do think it can get kicked around a little more than the Origin just because of how light the tips are. Origins track a little better, so if it's a matter of carving through choppy snow, I'd actually probably give it to the Origin. Overall, they feel quite similar. Hope that helps!

    How are these compared to the QST 98? Also, I really like the attributes you gave the QST in your review, so are there any other skis you would recommend?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 роки тому

      I find them a little more responsive and more energetic than the QST, but not as surfy. The rocker lines in the QST are more pronounced, especially in the tail, which gives it almost a "narrow powder ski" feel. A little easier maneuverability in tight terrain and deep snow conditions than the Origin 101, but the Origin feels more responsive on a groomer, longer effective edge. M-Free 99 is definitely a good one to consider, that ski feels quite similar to the QST in my opinion.

    Getting them late season, there are definitely more kinds of snow I want to try out on my Liberty Origin 101's. I ended up on them because I was stuck between Bent Chetler 100's and Rustler 10's. I realized the rustlers weren't quite as "cool", both because of topsheet and construction. Yes having partial metal is interesting, but most other skis get that same stiff underfoot/soft tip and tail character by just making the ski thicker in the middle. I will say that compared to the Bent Chetler 100, on roughed up snow, the Liberty Origin 101 doesn't feel as damp, it doesn't smooth out your skidded turns the way the bent chetler shape does with it's powder-derived shape. The BC100 felt to me like a ski that made me feel like a superhero, but didn't encourage me to improve. It doesn't reward you for putting it on edge the way the liberty does. You feel more of the chop when you skid on the liberty, but you also feel that it has a lot more to give back to you when you tip it on edge.
    The parts of these Skiessentials videos that really helped me out was just watching you guys ski the skis. You can see how the rustler was quick to go from edging to skidding but it looks like a light switch. The bent chetlers, you can tell... or maybe I can tell because I did demo them too.... you have to be pretty skilled at carving to get them to carve well. Carve timidly and they just wash out on you. This is not necessarily a knock on them, their speed limit for skidded turns is so damn high you sort of don't mind it, but like I said, they made me feel like I didn't need to improve, or learn how to carve properly, which felt like stagnation rather than growth to me. Watching the liberty origin 101 video, you can see two things which translate to the actual ski experience. 1, is this sort of pendulum effect that the skis have when you're going foot to foot, controlling your speed. It looks fun on video and it is fun when you ski them. The second is how they seem to have a dimmer switch between carving and skidding. It's not just one or the other, there's a continuum of cornering style that changes as you tip the ski over. You don't feel locked in a carve, but you also don't feel like you have to slam them hard into carving mode to feel the edges rail.
    The shape of the origin is actually a lot cooler than it looks. It looks like a regular rounded tip, but the curve radius actually goes tight, wide, tight, wide, tight as you follow along it, giving it more taper than it appears with the naked eye while having no discontinuity in curvature so when you lay it on edge, the effective edge gradually gets longer the more you tip over. Call it adjustable effective edge.
    If you're already an advanced skier and want a 100 wide, easy going cruiser that you're going to use when going around the mountain with less skilled skiers, I would choose the BC100. But if you're like me, still learning, wanting to improve, and you like playful feeling skis rather than chargey heavy skis, the origin 101's are exceptional. They perform as well as the BC100s as long as are willing to feel the undulations in the snow under your feet more clearly.

      Thanks so much for sharing your experience! "It's not just one or the other, there's a continuum of cornering style that changes as you tip the ski over. You don't feel locked in a carve, but you also don't feel like you have to slam them hard into carving mode to feel the edges rail." I particularly liked that part of your comment and I think that's easily one of the highlights of the Origin 101, or really any of the Origin widths.

    Looking at the Ranger 102 FR, but just learned this ski existed and have wanted to get on Liberty for a while. I really enjoyed a demo on the Origin 96. This will be for Canadian trees, trees and trees, and the occasional steep & narrow techy stuff that I get talked into once a day. Which ski would you want to hop turn in the judgement zone under the lift?
    Considering the use, I was looking at the Ranger in 177 for 5-10, 160 (most of my skis are 180). Would you recommend 176 or 182?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      Just tried to reply, but don't think it went through, so here we are trying again...
      Those 2 skis are pretty darn similar overall. In your scenario, it would hard for me to pick one over the other. Both are very trustworthy while also being light and maneuverable, which is pretty ideal in he scenario you're describing. If you've been excited to get a Liberty, I think now is a great time as the Origin 101 is one of the best skis they've made IMHO. For length, I'm very close to your size and like the 182 cm length. I expect that would work well for you too.

    Thank you for the great review. I have rossignol 84ai I bought from you as demos for the groomers and love them. I sold my armada arv 96’s. I live in Wi/Mi and 1 west trip a year. I’m looking for a new ski for powder days and tree ski that’s very playful. I like hitting all the pop up jumps. How would you compare these Orgin 101’s to the 2022 Qst 98’s? I been watching all your reviews and have it narrowed down to these two so far. Thank You

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 роки тому +1

      The Origin is a little more energetic and responsive, less rocker in the tail as well, which plays into that. The QST has a more surfy, smeary feel, especially in deeper snow, thanks to the increased tail rocker. It feels a little smoother overall than the Origin, but the Origin is quicker and more reactive. Hope that helps! Both are a lot of fun to ski, mostly just a difference in construction and rocker profile, which changes differentiates their feel.

      V76 and the V-Series in general have been phased out, but now the Evolv skis get 3 metal struts instead of 2. So, in theory, the Evolv skis basically get the construction that was previously in the V-series.

    Great review as usual. Making for tough choices now, qst 98, rustler 10, origin 101?? Looking for a west daily driver for tree, tight/tricky spots with float, fun and forgiveness. Not really concerned with high speed groomers. Thoughts?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 роки тому

      Yeah, that is a tough one. All good options for sure. The QST has the most rocker, and feels the "surfiest" in deep snow. Easiest edge release and a very smooth feel overall. The Origin 101 is the quickest and the most agile in my opinion. Very responsive. The Rustler is closer to the QST than the Origin in my opinion, but a little less rocker gives you longer effective edge and a touch more stability on firm snow. Hard for me to recommend one over the other, I would just focus on the "surfy vs responsive" performance and try to determine which one matches your skiing style better.

    How would you compare the origin 101 to the new QST 98? Was looking for an everyday ski for whistler.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      I find the Origin 101 more precise and more responsive. More energetic flex pattern and a little quicker. On the other hand, the QST has a smoother, surfy feel and actually a little more vibration damping too. So, one feels quick and energetic while the other feels smooth, supple, and surfy. Certainly some similarities between them, of course, but those are the differences I feel.

    It seems like Liberty is moving in to compete with those crazy popular enforcer 104 and ranger 102s. How do you think they compare against them?
    Also, how do you expect their stability in mid season chop to shape up?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 роки тому +3

      More similar to the Ranger than the Enforcer. Enforcers feel heavier and more powerful, not as quick, light, or as agile as these, but definitely a little stronger. For how light and how responsive it is, the Origin 101 is impressively stable, however. In my opinion, it does just fine through choppy snow conditions.

    Great review! I'm confused on which to buy - 96, 101, or 106. I am currently on the Ruster 10. I like the R10 here out east, most of the time, but the 180 is a little long for me to whip back and forth (tree's/bumps is what I ski most). Also, in Jackson this last week, HATED the R10 with fresh chopped up snow. Used my sons Reckoner 102's and had a better time on them. Then, went to Big Sky, and same experience. Really not confident on the R10 on steep chutes. Anyhow, I have Facton Candid 1.0 for groomer days (yuk) so with the Liberty, I'm looking for something for 75% of east coast skiing and using out west 1 week per year.
    Lastly, I am looking for a ski with better tails than the R10 and a little more stable. I do like twin tips or a ski that's close to it. I'd buy the Reckoner, but I thought the tails were a little much for me and to me the ski felt a little "flat". Thanks !

      I'd say the 101 fits that bill of being good at everything. I loved the ski's smoothness in and out of turns, as well as the soft snow performance in both trees and the wider zones.

      By BC 100, do you mean Bent Chetler 100? We have one from a couple years ago that's still relevant, but there's also a good chance you'll see another sometime this summer. Bob picked up a pair of Bent Chetlers for his personal quiver at the end of this season and has been really enjoying them.

    • @SkiEssentials

    which one is better for tight trees and powder the QST 98 or Origin 101?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      I'd rather ski the QST 98 mostly because of its shorter radius and the nice rocker profile in the trees, while the Origin is a bit more playful in a freeride sense.

    How do they compare to the BlackOps Holyshred?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 роки тому +1

      They feel lighter on your feet and more energetic. A little quicker too, specifically in terms of swing weight and throwing them sideways quickly. They aren't, however, as damp or as powerful as the Holyshred. Holyshred still feels more comfortable at high speeds, but this new version is definitely closer to that performance. To me, the biggest difference is responsiveness and energy vs a more damp feeling ski.

    Hi Jeff, I bought the Origin 101's at 182 cm from you guys and have had about 4 hours on them, split between 2 days on my local hill in Minneapolis area. First day was all man made snow but on the second day we had 15" of fresh which changed the picture somewhat. Initially I was wondering if I had made a mistake, they seemed a little lack luster in the carve, but when I started to give more positive input to get the edge angles up and in early, the skis carved well and I found the support from shovel that I had been missing. I also had a lot of fun making quick turns in the bumps that formed on the sides on the runs. I do think the Ranger FR 102 might be a bit more energetic with tad more rebound, but I think the 101's are quicker edge to edge. The 101's obviously mesh well with my Origin 112's so I am set for soft snow skis! It will be interesting to see how much float I will get from the 101's. Cheers for now!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      Hi Gregory!
      I found with the 101's that the shape and profile had a lot to do with the flotation and response just as much as the surface area. It's got a round and playful shape, and that meshes well with softer snow, while that metal strut does give the ski more energy in the carve. While it's not quite as energetic as some other ~100mm skis, it's certainly one of the more playful and fun-loving. Hope that jives with how and where you ski!
