  • The debate over whether to provide Ukraine with advanced combat aircraft is growing among Western leaders, with Australia being urged to provide its retired F/A-18 Hornet fighter bombers to Ukraine. Two of Australia's military theorists, Dr Ross Babbage and Dr Peter Dean, support handing over the planes under certain circumstances. Ukraine has also formally requested Finland to provide them with F/A-18 "Hornet" fighter jets, and the proposal is being considered by Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin. While Finland is still deliberating whether or not to donate Hornets to Ukraine, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen has stated his reluctance to give up any Hornets. Despite this, President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested more jets, including F-16 "Fighting Falcons" from the United States, which has yet to be provided.

It is built approx. 4,500 multirole F-16s, and the aircraft is still in production.
The F-16 is used by 27 countries, and several countries are now switching to the F-35.
Both the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark(?) and probably more countries, have operational F-16s that are unemployed after they were replaced by the F-35.
_Ukrainian pilots have already received several months of training in the use of the F-16 in the United States._

    • @warfarenotwarfair5655

The F-16 is their only viable option as thousands have been produced and it is still modernized to this day as well as a huge pipeline for training in the United States. Obtaining aircraft from small European countries is pretty stupid as they will not be able to keep up with production even close to what is needed. The United States is the only country in NATO able to sustain a war, the rest just talk a lot.

I don't understand how we haven't given them the A-10 Warthog seeing how the military has retired them even against the objections of troops on ground and the pilots who flew them. Troops loved them for close support, and tank killing, pilots just loved the hell out of them. Can not figure out why we have not given them a couple dozen of those, but than again look how sits in the Oval...CLUELESS!!

Also Spain is a big F-18 Operator and allready has a orderd on 20 Tranch-4 Eurofighter Typhoons in 2020 to replace the 20 oldest F-18s.
Finnland orderd replacements for der F-18s in 2021!
So, good candidate, also reguarding to the runnway situation. But remember: Russia has ~1500 Aircrafts in Service and the Ukrainian Airforce is seeking to obtain up to ~170Aircraft according to there own communications, so just ONE Type of Aircraft will not fullfill ALL the needed Aircrafts anyway, so its still possible that we just send F-18s, Gripen AND Eurofighter-Typhoons all together.

    • @sparrenburger2804
      @sparrenburger2804 Рік тому

It was not my question, but the idea is not so bad I think.
      Why not the F-15 EAGLE?
The US has still ~150 aircrafts in use Most of them are close to the lifetime-limit, I've read - but the rest? Qatar bought a big number of them even in 2016\17!
You are right when you said, we have to compete with over 1000 units. Eurofighter and especially Grippen were not produced in big enough numbers. But we have to push the Ukraine to 500 units at least, without to spend to much.
F-15, F-16, F-18 maybe some units from france, too plus the MIG-29, SU-24,-25,-27 and the L-39 trainer which Ukraine still has got.
Czechia said a few days ago, they could deliver their L-159 to Ukr.

You don't want to throw tons of foreign equipment at the Ukranians. You people are forgetting the fact that it will take years of training to operate these jets not to mention their logistics and supply issues for parts. Aircraft are maintained around the clock complete with spares so aircrew can quickly transition when the jet breaks down on the ramp. That being said the F-16 is the most widely used fighter jet in NATO and would be an easy choice.

I had some other reasons for thinking F-18 for Ukraine but these reason I have also heard. Considering the shift in talk and the time between “we really want this from the west” for the first actual tanks and it happening I suspect by the end of the year Ukraine will have F-18s. Grippers sound nice but there aren’t enough available.

    • @warfarenotwarfair5655
      @warfarenotwarfair5655 Рік тому

They won't have F-18s, this is stupid in every way. The F-16 is the standard NATO fighter and there are thousands of them and you don't want to just throw jets at them as civilians always forget about actual training and the logistics/supply involved let alone the mechanics you have to train. Currently they need Mig-29's because they are setup for them and the F-16 is the go to fighter for what they need. Everything else is too low in number and just plain idiotic.

But to help Ukraine, we have to form a strong air force.
The Ukr needs 500 jets at least I think. That would be only ⅓ of Russia's jets!
I think we should give everything possible. For example F-15, F-16 F-18 together with a french aircraft and the czechs L-159 plus the ukr. Mig-29 and SUs will not hit the 500 pieces at the end.
And the next task is a Helikopterwing.

No combat jet will be worth sending to Ukraine. The availability of relatively cheap, effective, ground launched anti-air systems, and the vulnerability of land based airports and ready-interceptors, has rendered combat fighters obsolete. Aircraft are now only useful for exploiting air-superiority once you have it.
Whether through luck or judgement, the Russian investment in relatively cheap low-cost high-volume bombardment systems has rendered most of the USA's high-tech, high-maintenance equipment ineffective. Ukraine has no chance of winning.

The US should still have around 150 in service.
In my opinion the F-16 makes more sense because of it is a multirole fighterjet. But why not booth!?
Edit: You fixed me on with the F 15.
They are not so outdated as I thought. Qatar bought some in 2017!
But the US-jets are all close to their lifetime limit.

Some people are acting like western aircraft like the US made F-16, Swedish made JAS-39 Gripen, and British, German, and Italian made Eurofighter Typhoon are a magical solution to Russia's invasion, *THEY’RE NOT*
They are fantastic aircraft, but they are built around western air doctrine, and they work best working as a team with other types of aircraft filling a bunch of different roles. Other aircraft like:
*RC-135 Rivet Joint* to electronically locate and identify Russian radars
*EA-18G Growler* to jam, suppress and destroy Russian radars
*E-2 Hawkeye or E-3 Sentry* for long range radar coverage and command and control
*KC-10/KC-135 tankers* to keep the plains fueled in the air for long periods of time
*F-15 Eagles, F-16 Fighting Falcons, Rafales, JAS-39 Gripens, and Typhoon* for air superiority and Close Air Support (CAS)
All working together in unison as a well coordinated team...
Ukraine doesn't have the manpower, time, or money to effectively build up an all new fully integrated Air Force, based around western doctrines...
Regardless of what aircraft they receive rather if it's the F-16, Gripen, or Typhoon, they'll be little good without more specialized western aircraft supporting it...
If I were Ukraine, and I were to pick *2* western aircraft for combat operations I would pick the *EA-18G Growler* (if available) for SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defense) and DEAD (Destruction of Enemy Air Defense) operations because of it’s jamming capabilities and the *JAS-39 Gripen* because of it's good assortment of NATO based weapons it can use, ease to use and maintain with a ground crew with minimum training, and it uses the same derivative of the engine in the EA-18G Growler so the common parts would put an ease on logistics, Ukraine could and probably receiving a fair amount of intelligence from NATO RC-135s and E-3 AWACs (Airborne Warning And Control)

This is not a relevant question !
ANY west jet with the right missiles will be the right one for Ukraine !
They will probably get old F16s because there are so many of them being replaced by F 35s
THE REAL QUESTION IS IF THEY WILL GET SOME (A FEW) METEOR MISSILES TO GO WITH THEM !
What Ukraine need is air to air capability with a reach of more than 100 km over the horizon and the capability to change
    route on the way
METEOR is a joint development and to get all the countries to agree to give them takes too long time !
TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE NOW , BECAUSE RUSSIA IS HINDERED BU RESTIKTIONS NOW , but they will catch up eventually

Australia should instead donate their jets to Philippines because of the much wider scale of boiling tensions in SEA region and the news of future invasion of China to Taiwan by 2025~27.... Ukraine is a lost cause they already proven that being controlled much by US Biden's regime and EU overlord's to stage an early World War 3 is still not worth it in Europe... Instead of wasting taxpayers money, they should just need to push both Ukraine and Russia to end their dogfight.... Asian war in East Asia and South East Asia is much a bigger threat to economic globalization and more devastating if it happens.... Letting China to get TSMC of Taiwan and reunifying it to mainland China plus the South China Sea blockade by PLA navy will paralyze the trade routes of goods for European countries and US allies 😹😹😹
