Love Otis Redding nicknamed the "King of Soul". Sadly he died in 1967 in a plane crash at only the age of 26. But he left us some beautiful music. Some of my favorites are "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Respect", "I've Been Loving You Too Long" etc.
Listen to Otis sing “Try a Little Tenderness”. Really mellow at the beginning, then it goes off the rails at the end. But throughout, so soulful, so church.
At the risk of responding to my own comment, if you do listen, Britt, to my suggestion, tell us if you don’t think the instrumental opening reminds you of the chords to “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. And while we’re on the subject of gospel influenced pop and straight gospel, how about Aretha’s version of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, or Paul Simon featuring Phoebe Snow singing “Gone at Last”, or something from the Reverend Al Green; I’ll let you choose.
It was 1962 and Otis lived on the country side outside Memphis. One day he agreed to be the driver for his buddy who was gonna do some recording at Stax Records in Memphis. When it was a break between the sessions Otis stepped forward to a mic and began singing "these arms of mine" yes this song. Stax CEO Jim Stevart got super excited and rushed to the mixer room and said "please tell me the tape was rolling"! Turned out it was and Otis was offered a contract right there and then! He had a short but very intesive careerr which ended when he died in a plane chrash in 1968.
Thank you for that bit of history. Always loved Otis voice and music. Such a tragedy he was taken so soon. We lost out on some great music. Thank goodness we have what we do.
I was first introduced to this song in the movie Dirty Dancing and then I did a deep dive into Otis and became a huge fan!! He's so soulful and smooth 🥰
There are people who are taken from us too soon, and we will always miss them, and yearn for the possibilities that could have been.Sam Cooke was one,and Ottis is another.Love his music forever and always!
I have always loved this song by Otis Redding. I first heard it in the movie, "Dirty Dancing" and it was the reason I bought the soundtrack. So sexy and smooth. I know, way too short. Great reaction. 💖💖💖
That stuttery-sounding rising line on the second half of the verses is guitar, played with the strings muted by the palm of the player's picking hand. It's a great effect. You'll also hear it on Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind" as well as on a lot of earlier ska/reggae music.
Totally agree with your reaction Britt, this song says it truly, that's how it feels when you are away from your true love, and I will add to the song and say your heart burns so that it hurts physically ❤️🔥
Thank you for your reactions, your remind me of why I fell in love with music and became a musician in the first place. In my early formative years, I discovered Otis and Jimi at the same time. There was a live album of their performances at the Monterey pop festival. One side Otis, one side Jimi. That "album" defined my early musical education as I Iiterally wore the grooves out. Jimi was my first and probably most influential guitar teacher. Otis taught me the power of R&B. To this day, Otis' voice resonates with all generations. Two geniuses whose music will continue to stand the test of time. I love your spirit, please continue posting and inspiring. And big up to Marc Broussard.
Britt, Otis was the King of soul music. "Try A Little Tenderness", "Down In The Valley", "I'm Sick Y'all", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Cigarettes And Coffee", "Pain In My Heart", "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)" and "It's Growing" are just a few of his classics.
Wonderful reaction Britt! Otis' songs definitely can touch your soul! Would love to see you react to more his catalog. I was in college when Otis tragically died in a airplane crash in December of 67. His song Sitting On the Dock of the Bay came out shortly after his death. I remember hearing it in the college rec center and we all stopped whatever we were doing. It was a very sad moment.
I can imagine back in the 60s and a smoky field blues bar having a nice drink and listening to him sing all night long and slow dancing with the woman you love that's my idea of heaven
2:45 . . . that's guitar playing at it's best! 😉 About the way the song ends, that's what i also always think . . . the song stops in such a strange way!? Otis has so much great songs . . . think you would love the song "On the dock of the bay."
Love Otis such an amazing voice, he passed way before his time. I was only 7 when this was released. Of course, I was too young to hear this then, but as I grew up a few yrs, it wasn't long until I discovered Motown. Love all Motown!! 😊
Kinda surprised you passed on his biggest hit . . . . . he died before he could finish it. The last portion was whistled to replace the intended vocals, because , at that time, he was gone. 1968 . . . (Sittin' on the) Dock of the Bay.
I'm Japanese, and there are many Japanese fans of his. I'm one of them too. Japan's number one rock'n'roller, Kiyoshiro Imawa, is famous as an Otis fan.
Do a reaction to Earl Thomas Conley and Anita Pointer, "Too Many Times." I believe it is one of the better songs ever. The total package of writing, arranging, editing, musical arrangement and vocal collaboration.
OOO - you got to one of my FAVEs. Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding. Just another level of soul. I know everyone is always on you about "listen to the recorded version" but some of his live stuff has incredible energy. Him and Tina Turner - I can spend a wonderful evening listening to one or 2 songs from different performances. 'Try a Little Tenderness" is amazing. "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" is one he's known for as well (before some raisins made it theirs!).
That Owowowo you love is a guitar through an Amp that has a fan in it I think. All I know it makes that sound and highly regarded for that sound. Big money if an original is found for just that reason.
More importantly, they had to fit the short time slots of AM radio DJs. If the DJs didn't play it, we didn't buy those 45s! If an artist survived until s/he had enough good songs to cut an LP, we discovered great stuff among the cuts that never made it to AM radio.
@@rcinsley so now you're getting two older than me, why did AM D Jays have a time limit I only ever listen to a.m. sports, FM was always available and I was a kid I don't even know what year it got invented But I do remember having records and 8-tracks, and I always thought cassette tapes for a step backwards With both the record player and an 8-track I can choose to listen to song 3 on a cassette you just have to sit there and fast forward and hope you get it right It wasn't that much smaller than an 8-track either... Not as far as having it in your car I never saw a problem with eight-track in the car never had the need for the cassette
It's OVER! LOL. Yep, back in the day, songs were short. They were produced like that due to the AM radio format. The owners wanted to play a record and get back to making money with the commercials. The records were just a vehicle for the commercials.
Otis, the King of Crooners. I'd love to see you react to his songs "That's How Strong My Love Is" and You Don't Miss Your Water" only two of his numerous masterpieces. Songs like his are sadly missing from today's cookie cutter tunes. Comparatively, today's music is lacking in depth, heart, love and hurt....Otis was only 26yrs old when he was taken from this world due to a plane crash just before Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" was released for radio play. He died before his largest hit was heard by fans. It's tragic especially when considering what his talent could have brought to the music industry. Dock of the Bay is the usual song reacted to on YT, while a great song, there were so many more that are worthy of a listen and add to your library.
not bad for a demo. It was a fluke that it was even recorded. You have to hear " These arm of mine" . You can tell the studio musicians could see Otis was special and put the heart in that recording.
Hold🎉😮🎉😮😢😮😢🎉🎉ON LOVE..THIS WAS THE STEVE HARVEY..PRISE DAYS 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 THERE WAS SUCH A DAY,.....😮....TV YESẞSSSSSS DID GO OFF..AT 11.⁰0 TO 12:000 WATCHING FRIGHTENING FLICKERS..AND SO ON IM62 LOVE NOW A SONG FOR YOU THE ORDELLS FAREWELL🙏🏿🌹
I’ve always thought of this as probably the most romantic song I’ve ever heard. Otis had a really beautiful talent.
It'd used in two Patrick Swayze movies. Dirty Dancing and Roadhouse. Don't need to explain what happens in the scenes. This song is sex on vinyl.

Yes... yesssss.. and YES!!!
Bro, I swear you copied and pasted my comment lol. I write this on all Otis reactions 😅
Anything that Otis did is great! Grew up on Motown, love it all!!
Yes he died in plane crash , along with his band , R.I.P . Too all ,
Every Otis and Sam Cooke song ends too soon!! 😂😢
When Sam started the "Ooohhh I know I know I know" you just knew it was a banger 😂
Agreed.
Yes!
Amen to that!

Ugh I LOVE this song! It’s sad yet sweet, sensual without being nasty. It’s just lovely. On almost all of my playlists
This is Soul… with a capital S!! Otis still sounds phenomenal, relevant and unique ❤
(“Soul with a capital S” is also a cool song by Tower of Power😂)
I was first introduced to this song in the movie Dirty Dancing and then I did a deep dive into Otis and became a huge fan!! He's so soulful and smooth 🥰
That soundtrack brought so much great music to the attention of my teen self.
@@lowriebean8140 same!!! How good was the whole soundtrack. Cry To Me was another fire song I found from that soundtrack! So many good songs..
It was also used in Road House.

You would be familiar with “Sitting on the dock of the bay” that’s Otis. But he has so many great songs
We need much more inspirational music like this being made now days.
Do not sleep on Otis Redding! A true legend

"I've been loving you too long" is by far his greatest song.

When my niece was a baby any time I played Otis Redding she would stop crying
I'm Japanese, and there are many Japanese fans of his. I'm one of them too. Japan's number one rock'n'roller, Kiyoshiro Imawa, is famous as an Otis fan.

When Otis sings, you can feel every word.

Doenst get much better, ahh, the days when artists could acutally SING!!!
