Thanks, Leon. I received the notification email that my wait was over today for the FM-9 Turbo, and I instantly ordered it. Now to suss it out...I hope a lot of my AX-8 programming knowledge is applicable to the FM-9...we'll see. Greetings from NC in the US, too!
So as far as the FM9 goes, this is probably the first video I would recommend to ANYONE. I got my Fractal FM9 a few weeks ago. I'm based in the UK. Since I've had it, I've been a bit not disappointed, but felt as if there's something still missing. So after watching this video, I realised 2 very important things. The input sensitivity makes a massive difference. I put mine down to 15% (I have 490r and 498t pick-ups and they are medium to high output. This made a difference and maybe there is a placebo there in many ways but from.playing it this morning, and then watching a few bideos, this one stood out and I went straight back to my unit and something felt like it had changed and there is definitely a noticeable difference in the tone. I also noticed that the person I purchased this from had the AC line frequency set at 60hz and this is obviously to do with the noise gates. I was finding I was having a lot of noise issues and this fixed it. This is a much needed watch. Thanks Leon you are a legend for making all these great quality videos.
Hey Leon. Great video and thx for the free information. I have my FM9 coming in a few weeks so I'm brushing up on it's use. I cross between you and Rosh Roslin for tips. One point that's a little confusing (and whether it's a difference of opinion or not) is that at the 8.21 minute mark of your video, you talk about a Mono setup. Your presets are in Stereo but when Mono is needed, you simply change the I/O setting to SUM L/R (no need to make changes to any presets). Watching one of Rosh's videos, he's firm on using COPY L/R instead as he feels that SUM L/R can/will cause phasing issues and you need to check all your presets to ensure that this is not occurring. Also he mentions if you're using panned stereo cabs, we won't hear both cabs - only the left (unless cabs are panned to the middle). Is there a correct answer to this or is it simply a matter of opinion/choice? So, if my presets are already in mono (no stereo effects or cabs anywhere), do I choose SUM L/R or COPY L/R? And if my presets are in stereo (Stereo Chorus and Delay only - no stereo cabs) I can simply use SUM L/R and I'm good to go in Mono? Sorry for the long message - it's a little confusing!
He's right that SUM will cause phasing issues for things like the 2290 delay and certain enhancer modes. I like SUM since I often use dual rhythmic delays and I like being able to hear 2 distinct delays when summed. However these days i tend to just save a stereo and a mono version of the same preset.
@@G66eu Thx so much for your reply - I really appreciate it. Another question if I may. As you mentioned making two presets (one Mono and one Stereo), will it work or be easier to have a stereo preset (with no phasing issue effects) and then if faced with playing mono, you leave the I/O setting at Stereo and just give the FOH guy Output 1 LEFT out? Or is it better to have two presets as you've mentioned?
Yeah that works as well, just keep in mind if you have any fancy panning effects they won't behave the way you want. But of course you're in mono so you wouldn't expect that! @@claudetoybox
Hey Leon, I saw on another one of your videos where you accessed the effects on a preset. Is there a way to access those effects with a foot switch say in a live situation. Like on preset 68 badger, can I access Effects live by using a foot switch on the fm9
I appreciate your insights....I just recieved my FM9 last week and it was finally over the past weekend that I felt that I had it sounding as good as I thought my AX8 does (the sound just didn't feel as open and live to me-definitely darker sounding to my ears). I know this is due to my lack of experience and understanding with the FM9 and still have much work to do and I would guess that many new FM9 users have experienced the same thing. Any piece of gear that you can deep dive into fairly involved settings and parameters has a learning curve and developing an understanding to many of these controls that you covered in your video is critical...I had no idea about the scene leveling function for example...the time investment needed for learning and discovery is hard for many of us. One question though...is it possible to reasonably import and convert AX8 presets to the FM9? I tried to import a couple of my favorite AX8 presets without much success. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Hey Leon, great review as usual. Question, I have an axe effects 2 xl plus rack mount, what do you recommend for a foot controller to use with that unit?
Great tips- thanks Leon. Just received my FM9- took 1 year! How would I configure if I am using two Studio Monitors + my Boss Katana 100W (effects loop.) I think I would use the Output 3 block? On global settings, what should I select under "Cabinet Modeling?"
I have an FM9, and I'm using 2 stereo boxes on out1 and another 2 stereo boxes on out2, the sound of the guitar when I play comes out on the 2 outputs, however the sound from the USB that goes to the PC only comes out on separate out1, out2, how can I do this? Configure the audio on the PC to output out 1 and out 2 simultaneously?
can you tell me, how to get access to a dual footswitch (TRS) on a single Pedal out? On the FM3 there is a Tip/Ring or something like dual tab. I miss that on the FM9.
Hey Leon, I have quick question. UPS just delivered my FM9. I've been trying to following your instructions how to setup everything. Somehow, there's no sound through the Output at all. No sound through the PHONE as well. I used the same cables and guitar from my older pedal and they're fine. So, do you think there's a problem with the OUTPUT or is there something I didn't turned on that I'm supposed to do? Or.... Man, I don't see anyone having problem with the OUTPUT stuff, except me. Thanks.
The community for the Fractal gear is amazing, no doubt! Thanks Leon & G66

Thank you Leon, I'm about to receive my FM9 and moving from FM3. This is really useful, great video. Cheers from Portugal.

Hey Man love your videos! Could you potentially please do a video like this one for the FM3 Turbo? Cheers in advance!

Leave cab modelling on, but tap output 3 before the cab block on the grid.
@@G66eu Thanks!
on firmware 4.01 I'm having to turn the input A/O sensitivity down to 5% to avoid the clip warning. Using a PRS with 85/15 too
