I was inspired to play around with making a wooden ball bearing after Peter Collin mae a "sit and spin" with a wood and marble ball bearing for our baby Harriet:

You can't imagine how hilarious this video was to someone like myself who spent an entire career working for a company making metal bearings! As I watched the video, I kept thinking that the solution for your inner race problem (you used the correct terminology for the bearing parts) was to make it in two pieces. I think you might be the first person I've ever seen make something on a lathe other than a damn bowl or vase. I'm amazed at what you can do with wood. Entertaining video in more ways than one!

instead of making the center piece out of 2 parts in order to fit all the marbles, how would using steam/boiling water and softening up the pieces work? that would end up with a pretty cool "puzzle" as to how you got all the marbles in.

Most of these projects go something like this:
I'm making a project, and need to do this part, so I made this assembly to help.
Then I had a problem, so I made this assembly to help.
I was able to use an assembly to do this one part.
I ran into this problem, but then this assembly fixed that.
Once finished, I found a way to make this while thing even more epic, and it only required modifying an assembly.

Paper joints are amazing for lathe work. Glue your workpiece to a sacrificial piece with a paper joint (sacrificial piece, glue, paper, glue workpiece). It turns just fine, very securely. The two pieces come apart very easily with a chisel and a sharp tap from a steel hammer. Then just sand away the paper quickly. Safe, quick, and easy.

Matthias, Even though I saw all of this series as you originally produced them, I had to binge watch them again!!
Great content! You mentioned perhaps someday building a drill press when you got the drill chuck. I’ll go look.

Who downvotes this? Learning from doing it, or watching it done, is reason enough to make a wooden bearing. It doesn't have to be "better" than a steel one.
