    As an Artist, which you are also, there are no flaws or mistakes. Your boxes are Rustic by intention and the so-called "flaws" are intentional which gives each box a unique character, so each box is "OOAK" One Of A Kind and no two are alike. As Barry had commented your time is worth money, there is also gas and auto insurance added to everything and the trial price is excellent. You can list them for the prices Barry mentioned, and if they don't sell as well, you can always lower the price by a bit. I am in California,
    USA and planter boxes like your's empty sell for the higher price. An example is a 3.75" H x 20" W x 5" D sells on one site for $26.99 dollars or 22.29 pounds.

    Joe I am a new subscriber to your channel. I appreciate this informational DIY step by step training video. This will allow a disabled and/or senior citizen living on a fixed income to pay someone to disassemble & reassemble a garden bed for them. Allowing them to eat somewhat organic Non-Gmo vegetables/fruits/herbs planted through seeds/starts/bushes/vines incorporated in the garden plots/housing landscape areas if alloted. Shalom!

    I did not intend to what the 'whole thing' but~ the host has such a pleasing attitude I was 'hooked' I just discovered 'pallets' at my local hardware store, I now have a stack of them, I also love strawberries, and I have so many runners I don't know where to put them! Problem solved!

    I know this video is older (someone might have already said this), but if you really want to get the nails out, tap them out and use the claw of the hammer to get them out. Use a centre punch to get the head of the nail up to claw it out or rip out the bottom if the nail has snapped.
    I'm doing and have done a similar thing and didn't even think of using a block of wood the pull the planks off, my timber is way thinner than what you're using though.
    Loving your videos, cheers mate.

    Joe... you are such a kind and generous man. I totally get where you’re coming from with wanting people that otherwise couldn’t afford them have a chance at growing. Just make sure no one takes advantage. You say they’re not perfect... they don’t need to be. They’re perfectly adequate for the job and in my mind, look nicer than perfect straight factory made planters. Anyway, good on you and what comes around goes around, have a good day x

    Absolutely brilliant mate. I just built a chicken coop out of pallets and reclaimed cedar fencing. I am inspired by you and your planters. I live in Spokane Washington USA so if it’s all right with you I would like to build these and sell them here in my area. I don’t think I’m going to be much competition since I’m on this side of the pond. I think it’s funny that you guys collect the pond it’s pretty freaking huge the Atlantic that is. I think $20 would be a good price to offer fair and reasonable. I hope you’re having yourself a fantastic day and I want to thank you once again for all of your fantastic ideas.

    Brilliant Joe - they’re worth AT LEAST £25 planted up (I know I originally said they’d fly for a tenner - that was a bit of a tongue in cheek comment) They’re really cool rustic planters and handmade, with skill, which you obviously have, is a lot more desirable than ‘laser cut’ in my book.
    Also, you’re providing free a tutorial on how to make them!!
    You’ve every right to profit from your skills - go for it!

  • @hiddenjourney1498
    @hiddenjourney1498 5 років тому +6

    I agree with that comment you read out about the ‘hidden’ work involved in making the planters, you also should include a fee for your time. Everyone gets paid a minimum wage for an hours work! Don’t forget that your time is valuable and of value! And don’t be afraid to sell them empty! Also don’t be comparing your work to laser cut bulk made planters. Sure laser cut is straight but in my experience the quality is less, and people appreciate hand made, they each have a uniqueness and quality that are made to last! That’s what you are selling! And that is usually more expensive than mass produced products. I’m not saying don’t sell them at a low price, I certainly understand wanting people to be able to afford them. What I am saying is stop thinking your work is not up to scratch or good enough for higher prices because it most definitely is! Just look at the amount of interest you’ve had! Good luck!

    Lowering your prices is easier then increasing them. Never mind the ones in the garden centers, yours are handmade, rustic, and more importantly made out of re cycled materials, not run off a sawmill, thats the originality of yours and the appeal. .Whilst I appreciate your generosity in encouraging people to grow etc please count in your labour ,people would pay £ 20-25 just for the empty container. Well done :)

    I have done custom fitting for people and custom blinds, curtains for years, and to sell them at a lower price is really not fair to you and whom you are making it for. i get it Joe you are a generous person with a good heart and sole, and it's your decision to what you do!

    Hi Joe and Kelly, 20 pounds sounds right to me with it including the soil and plants. That's about $26 in my Texas USA location and is what I would pay, or more to the point, is what I can afford to pay. You may want to consider selling them empty for a lesser amount. Also, maybe consider having a work day so that you're not just working on boxes and can do other things you want to do. Then have a certain day for pickup. You don't want to get burnt out on making boxes with no time leftover for gardening. I enjoy your videos! Hello to Otis.

    Nice work Joe, great recycling!
    Perhaps better to not charge too much, and be in demand ? Where money is not a limiting factor for some, the 'rustic' look could be lucrative - if making money for the allotment is a necessity.
    However, there is obviously a valuable community aspect. Keeping the price down enables, [and maybe more importantly], encourages more local people and families maybe on limited incomes; to have a ' little go ' at growing things.
    Maybe you could get some young apprentices to pass on the skills ?
    Good for the children, good for people and great news for the environment ....

    You mentioned that the ones in the shops are laser cut etc, but yours are handmade and recycled which is it's own selling point. Many people including myself seek out products like yours precisely because they are not generic and factory made and I would pay more for it because of that. If you think of it as being like buying a picture, some people would rather have a print of a famous work from the high street and some people would rather have an authentic piece from the artist himself even if unknown. here in France we call it
    " artisan " work and it is very sought after. You would definitely be classed as an artisan.

    Small suggestion to save yourself even more wood - instead of cutting some more pallet wood for the feet, you could potentially make use of the inch of wood that you had to cut off of the sides OR if you still prefer to use the bigger feet as you currently are using, you could potentially using one of the inches of wood as a central foot

    • @diggingfordinner
      @diggingfordinner  5 років тому

      Alpaka Whacker the wood I used for the feet was much thinner and not good for much as it was the back piece holding the pallet together so made sense using it 😊

    Hey nice job I came across your video because I watched a woman building full size garden boxes pretty much the same way your building in your smaller boxes I was so impressed and I noticed that she was lining the inside with untreated wood to hold the pieces together I asked a question about that but then she had a follow-up video where she said don't do this using the untreated wood that I had referred to her response had nothing to do with what I said the second video was made long before I ever saw first one but in her second video she shows how all of her boxes rotted apart in about 2 years she said I should line them with plastic can I shouldn't screw the boards together in the corner cuz every one of them fell apart you should put wooden blocks in the corners I thought it was so cool that she came on admitted to our mistakes and showed us her boxes falling apart so my question how long do you expect your boxes to stay together is pallet wood actually treated is it only being exposed where it's cut if it is treated I would like to use pallet wood but I'm not seeing anybody cover this issue if pallet wood can be used and we understand it's only good for two to three years then so be it but is that the fact thank you good job nice work. Have a blessed day looking forward to some answers

    Joe where do you get all your wood chips from and your pallets? The pallets I can ever find is ones that are quite thin.

    Hi, could you please tell me if I should waterproof the planter after I've made it please?...I noticed that you didn't do this on your pallet planter....many thanks

      christine naylor You can do, I didn’t because the wood I used was treated and also weathered so will withstand some moisture. I lined all of the large sit on beds that I built as I wanted to add a year or so onto the life span of the beds.

    I'd leave the extra inch on the end pieces and put a rope handle on either end

    have different prices for different sizes take all your expenses into account even charging your batteries is say £30 for those big ones is still cheap so id aim at that or 100% charge for compose etc that goes into it even if you make your own its all your time

    I'd get some gorilla glue 16£ for a litre and some clamps and glue 2 planks together 3 times and the same with side that way you can make every plank the same size x 6 and x 4.
    This way you can make any easy production line, make 10 a day easily and put your price up to 25£.

    I wish i hadn't said owt about the price now ha ha ha, but still think you could get at least £20 for them oh and thanks for the shout out.
    Where the heck do you get those pallets from anyway?, as the only pallets i see are narrower and have 4 corner blocks on them, the ones you use are really good ones.
