- ETUDE: In The Lot
AUTHOR: Mark Perrett
INSTRUMENT: Snare Drum
8 REPS OF EACH TEMPO
PRACTICE TIPS:
- Play all heights, dynamics, and zones as written.
- Record yourself, play in a mirror, and pause to take notes as you find personal tendencies and inconsistencies.
- PLAY ALL RHYTHMS IN TIME! The difficulty of this piece comes from the metric modulations. If one part gets off beat you could lose time very easily.
- MARK TIME! If you plan to perform in the marching arts, you must be able to put your feet to everything you do.
- Take this at your own pace! There are a lot of details and everyone is at a different performance level. Pause and isolate parts as needed.
WHAT IS DRUMLINE SIMULATOR?
Drumline Simulator is an interactive play-along video platform designed to help you practice Grid Book Exercises, Etudes, Warm ups, and more. This video takes you through reps at different tempos using rhythmically accurate audio tracks and large, detailed sheet music.
DO NOT ATTEMPT to run the simulator until you are ready to play the music at the first tempo.
Once you have the music in your hands you can begin your reps and build muscle memory. The goal is to play from top to bottom without error. Once you have completed the individual practice reps, we take you IN THE LOT to play your part with the rest of the drumline. Use this as a tool to #GetBetter and be honest with yourself and your progress. Enjoy.

Keep making these
Here's an idea, put a 360 cam somewhere in a snareline and have the full line play this exercise and all the reps. Now THAT will be a real drumline simulator. Now all u need are some VR
You must have bugged our morning meeting lol. Definitely going to expand upon this idea. Ballin on a budget man. Baby steps!! But thanks for the feedback!
This is seriously thee best way for drummers to learn ever. Thank you for creating this and maybe you can team up with some software developers and they can make this an easy program that instructors could use. But kudos on it being so professional and cool.
Marlon! Thanks so much dude! That is the goal! We want to develop this into an app that can be used as a custom tool to #GteBetter! Here we GROW!! :)
TheGridBookSeries That is a very great idea and it forces you to learn from a slow tempo.
@@gridbooknation Please do this so I can add the sounds to Sibelius.
You'd think Sibelius and Finale could come up with decent marching percussion sounds but alas, THEY DO NOT! So we are forced to buy Virtual Drumline for an extra $200. Well, not forced but there are no real options for realistic marching percussion sounds. Develop this please!
@@DennisJohnsonDrummer I do have to mention that musescore with the MDL extension sounds pretty decent, but it would require you to learn musescore, so 🤷
@@gridbooknation yo how close you to your big goals since its been 3 years lol, no pressure, just wanna see
This is pretty sick. Excited for the bass simulator!
THIS IS AMAZING! IM GOING TO GET MY WHOLE DRUMLINE TO TRY THIS ONE! ! ! MAKE MORE PLEASE !
Legit this is so sick learning this asap
I can tell you guys take great pride in the stuff you guys put out. This is the most amazing thing that's come to the drumming community. I wish I had stuff like this when I was in high school. I hope the guys that are freshman in high school take FULL advantage of everything the grid book has to offer. This is not a game. This is real life. #LFG
This is totally the greatest thing I've played since ViP auditions. I played through this with another guy on the line, and I could feel myself get better. Hope there are more to come!
This is such an awesome idea. It's been so long since I worked up an exercise like this. So much fun!
This is awesome. Please make more of these!!!
Please make more videos like these! This is the ultimate practice and teaching tool!
Had my head phones cranked and all i hear is LAST TIME i almost fainted
lolz
i love the way the video progresses and how you can just watch it through non stop. i'm really excited to see more of these in the future Mark!
Thanks so much!! :) Excited to make more!
Awesome! This is fire guys🔥🥁
Thanks so much! Use it and let us know if it helps you! :)
TheGridBookSeries already getting my stuff together to #getbetter !🥁🔥
this is honestly so helpful, please do this for later licks and etudes you do!!
Thanks so much! I haven't played in a while but this is inspiring me to whip out my pad again!
Whooo! So great to hear! Thanks for the support!
I freaking love this and only wish i had it before my dci audition a little bit ago. correct me if im wrong but the count off comes in a beat early which causes you to come in on the opposite foot. Thanks for everything your doing with the drumming comunity.
You would stop marking time at the end, then mark time again in the tap off. That would simulate a hold in the music at the end of the phrase!
this is freakin dope
I love this! I can't wait until more music for the drumlins simulator is released.
Thanks so much!!
The app they're using is amazing!!!
Can't wait for more like this, please hurry😂
been out of practice for about 2 years now, using this to train for next years indoor season.
clean.
been working on this since nit came out. Progress is slow but present, made it to the 140 this time, keeping in mind i started off learning this video at a quarter speed. will continue practicing this as well as other projects. :)
Progress is progress! Sometimes we don't move as fast as we want through things, but stay patient & persistent and you will succeed! Keep going!
i love this so much but the snare part is playing the accents of measure 8 on count 4 instead of the and uh of 3
Will there be a bass drum or tenor version of this?
I needed this in 06’
Haha same!! We aged out in 2007 and this kind of thing would have been so helpful! Happy to provide it now for people!
When I hear eight and your in it's almost like a roller coaster, u don't want to but the ride already started
Lol It's GO TIME!!
like that ensemble composer
When can we get the other two parts me and my friends wanna learn it. Lol but the bass part is so lit👌🔥🔥
SOON!!
haha this is cool! Do you think you could do this with excerpts of show music from actual shows from previous DCI or WGI years? There's some real tasty stuff being written every year that I think a lot of players would love to be able to get into their hands, especially young ones that have a particular Corps in mind, or just want to play what some top tier corps would play.
I know you guys are just starting this kind of thing, I'm just offering up some ideas on what you could do with it :)
Bloo Eagle That is a really cool idea! The only issue is copyright. Can't copy other people's music and redistribute it. But we will be evolving this platform soon! Thanks for the feedback!
what do those arrow-looking markings mean on the 3rd partials of the count 2 and 3 triplets in the second to last measure? they look like shots but sound like accents.
Brenna Tosh It's like a jazz accent, but it just means to hit the note really hard
Those are "Rooftop Accents" and are meant to be played as an accent with more emphasis. Just as Jonryan stated, this would be played with more volume.
a staccato accent- so basically just means a super accent.
what are the stick tricks suppose to be?
Back Stick and Stick Cross
please do more of these
Thanks! Working on it! Putting out some new books first then getting back to making more Drumline Simulators!
TheGridBookSeries ive seen all the great everybody has been putting in over there,i have yall guys on every social media, and yalls notifications are turned on,on my Instagram keep up the amazing work guys
Thanks so much for the kind words and support!!
after using vdl sounds, these ones kinda sound like a robotic drum line lol
MAKE MORE PLEASE
When we get caught up on products we will! We have a few books coming out soon. So after that we will get back to making these! Stay Tuned!
Please adjust your marking time every time the etude start again.

Soo where can I download this?
WightWayne If you want just the audio, you can do UA-cam to MP3. Maybe they'll release the audio on their site?
Liam Brannan thanks but nah I mean the actual software lol
WightWayne The Audio is from an app on the AppStore called Ensemble composer, I think it costs around $10 dollars but I can't remember, I got the app like 2 years ago
This is not an App yet, just a video series we are starting. We used Sibelius to write the music and the Ensemble Composer app to make the audio. Thanks so much and we will get this and the music on our website as soon as we can!
Ahhh ok gotcha thank you both
