If you're a good player, take the plunge on this trust me. I grew up fingerpicking all the folk stuff from the 70's then moved onto SRV and everyone he turned me onto. I've been around dudes who could do the Chet Atkins thumb stuff and with my background in fingerpicking ( I even used a thumbpick lol), I always thought I'd someday get around to taking a little time and getting that stuff down. WRONG!! lol I've been literally busting my ass for 5 days now trying to get this groove down, and I just FINALLY got it. So, #1 Tommy's a God. I always knew this but I've been humbled in the most joyful way a musician can be humbled. I have a good right hand with a thumbpick. I can play a lot of difficult fingerpicking stuff. The first day of learning what the hell he's actually doing to get all the muted off-beat stuff, and then trying to duplicate it, it's literally been 35 years sinceI've been so lost on the instrument. It might not be for everyone I guess but going back to being a clumbsy novice to the point that I actually thought I might not be able to grasp it was pretty awesome. You learn the initial thing without muting and slapping and it's pretty straight forward but when you start to attempt to duplicate his groove, oh boy lol.
I know I blathered on here but I assume there are a lot of players watching this who'll understand my excitement. During covid I found Billy Strings, then Tony Rice, and since then I've been busting my ass learning to play through my chords on all those magical Tony Rice tunes, and now I found Tommy. I was so immersed in the Blues stuff that I wasn't listening or playing anything else for 20 years. What a beautiful thing it is to have music in our lives. All you have to do is get out of your lane and new worlds open up.
I'm going to see Tommy in May 2024 and am certain I'll be blown away. I'm 15 rows from the stage so I'll get to experience him the way you should. I'm literally going by myself and not taking the wife lol so I can absorb as much as I can. I'm kidding but deadly serious at the same time zzzzzzzZING
