We had a joke in the USSR. In different variations, but something like this:
A NYT journalist brings an article to the editor. "The Soviet gymnast won gold at the World Championships."
Editor: "Are you a fool? - rewrite it normally."
Journalist "The Soviet gymnast won the World Championship.. But at what cost?"

I recently witnessed a "human meat-wave" assault. I was at a Krogers Supermarket, when 3, 300 lb. women came waddling down the aisle pushing carts filled with potato chips and pop. The snack department was almost completely devastated. Oh, the horror. I could almost hear their arteries clogging. It was sickening. There was no getting around them. I was forced to retreat to the produce department where I took cover next to the spinach, since I knew they would never attack there.

It’s strange when Europeans say that Russians are losers, because they lost so many soldiers in 2 years, while America lost only 4,000 people in Iraq in 8 years. They don't take into account the fact that:
1.The Iraqis did not have as much military equipment and weapons.
    2. Almost a million military personnel did not fight against the Americans with constant reinforcements and several waves of mobilization.
3.The Iraqis did not have satellite intelligence from other countries.
4.The most developed countries in the world did not help the Iraqis.
5.The Iraqis did not have drones or modern radio equipment.
6.The Iraqis did not speak the language of the Americans and could not pass themselves off as them.
7.The Iraqis did not leave for America and did not destroy military installations within the country.
8.The Iraqis did not have such strong propaganda.
9.The terrain of Iraq is deserted, the terrain of Ukraine is more difficult due to large forests in which it is convenient to hide. Houses in Iraq are basically low, houses in Ukraine are multi-story, making it easy to hide in them.
    10. Ukraine has a lot of artillery, Iraq did not have artillery in such quantity and variety.
That's not all, I'm too lazy to go further down the list.
Russia is fighting against Ukraine, which has all this.
It is wrong that Europeans, who fight only with weak countries, tell Russia that it is weak.

There is not an accurate English translation to the Russian word of Maskorovka. It means many things, camouflage, concealment, disseption, planting false intelligence to trick the enemy, etc, etc. But I never thought that it could be so effective to the point where you can make the enemy believe their own lies. It's like the Germans after WW2, we only lost the war on the eastern front because of the bad weather, it was the leaders mistakes, they over ran us with their endless human waves blah blah blah. History repeats itself, no one ever wants to admit to being outfought by Russia and has to come up with an excuse to imply that the enemy was cheating somehow.

As a retired special operator, I taught at the USAF School of Advanced Airpower Studies and the USMC School of Advanced Warfighting as well as Joint Special Operations University (a faculty member at the first two and adjunct faculty at the latter). I never once described myself as an expert but, like the narrator of this video, a long-time student of war (as well as a participant). The Russians are the designated bad guy in this conflict and therefore they cannot be described as sophisticated warfighters. They must be denigrated; and calling their operations and tactics "meat waves" or something akin to that is used to portray them as savages. No video evidence is offered because there is none. And explaining Russian successes against NATO equipped and (in many cases) trained Ukrainian formations must be attributed to something. The "experts" have chosen to attribute those successes to mindless human waves of unthinking slavs.

People imagine this just as countless soldiers running into the firelines of enemies, which is honestly a straightforward pre-machinegun tactic, and would not stand a chance for the US army with the MOST firepower in 1950, almost 40 years since WWI> Yet there are clearly gains in the frontline by Chinese, so what is the US Army doing if its enemy is using tactics that is like, disproved 40 years ago? Even by the time of the Somme the French had already developed tactics to storm German trenches. The French forces south of the British attacked on the same day and achieved their 1st day aims. It was just that the new divisions and armies that Kitchener had raised were inexperienced and not properly taught those lessons. The same happened when the Americans took to the field in 1918, still using 1914 tactics. Greetings from a soldier of the 155th Marine Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces! Thank you, Alex, for your honest coverage of events at the front! Meat assaults are a thing of the past. Our command has learned Bakhmut's lesson!
Advancing on Novomikhailovka, ours lost 14 guys in two weeks, three were killed. We have superiority in the main types of military equipment, aircraft and drones. The Ukrainian Armed Forces in Avdeevka have lost 12 thousand soldiers in the last two weeks alone! The order did not reach many, and they simply stood still, becoming a convenient target for our strike weapons.
And Zelensky, speaking at a press conference, did not remember about his soldiers, whom he sent to certain death. Former soldiers of the 82nd US Airborne Brigade called Zelensky - Jolly Roger, like in a horror film

I can’t recall the author, but I remember reading an autobiography of a German officer on the eastern front who would marvel at how the Soviets would advance while under fire. Each soldier would advance independently in short bursts then drop down for a few seconds, then advance again. When you have a whole field of soldiers doing this the constant flurry of movements keeps distracting the defenders…. Like a covey of quail. He said that even under artillery fire they would continue to advance… and often have fairly low casualty rates. This makes sense because the troops are all spread out. When I heard you describe the Wagner tactics it used similar principles.

I am a sergeant in the Estonian Army (OR-5). I've been in the military for some time now, been actively deployed 4 times, one of them was a combat deployment.
Now, I will say that I had a chance to easily become an OF-2 throughout my years, I was even suggested to by multiple COs that I served with. The sole reason I didn't is because of a common saying in the military (at least here) - "The further you go up the ranks - the deeper you will be in the political shit.", meaning that every officer that passes a mandatory military school (3 years here) becomes very actively politicised. On one hand, there is nothing wrong with that, on the other? You get people like that Danish officer, who spews propaganda shit just to get some views, less so actively report truthful and correct information.
Everyone with a brain, who did at least some service (be that even a brief conscription or just BCT) understands how warfare works and what is required to achieve the victory, and whenever you see the news saying "Women are actively joining forces to REINFORCE the troops on the battlefield", or "Officials look to increase the mobilisation numbers to X" - you easily understand that the war is simply not going how it was portrayed to.
But they will never admit that, and there is a whole list as to why. But that doesn't mean there isn't valid criticism that definitely shows issues with the Russian army (logistical issues, amount of troops, equipment), but that was during the first months of the war, where as they adapted to it quite quickly, and I no longer see epic counter-offensive reports from the Ukrainian side.

About time someone talked about this. Have been frustrated about this for years.
Russian/Soviet small squad tactics have been on par with the west as far back as WW2. If anything, the Red army always had a much heavier emphasis on artillery, over infantry. But they recognized the importance of combined arms since the 30s. Flexible defense, deep penetrating assault with encirclement, overwhelming artillery is how the Soviets won WW2, not human waves. Any "human waves" that occurred were a result of poor coordination and bad intelligence, i.e. blunders caused by fog of war.

Yet their commanders organised 5 more platoons to do the exact same thing. But they aren't meatwaves...
What is funny is, that copeplanation feels extra hollow now we see Russians drive open unarmoured Chinese golfkarts towards Ukrainian positions and actually get mowed down with machinegun fire on approach.

      @Yura135 4 місяці тому +6

@@Deathadder90 Do you have a video of the Russians "walking down a road" and then commanders organizing "5 more platoons"? Do you have video of them getting "mowed down with machine gun fire on approach"?
I have seen none of these things in Ukraine. I haven't even seen a single platoon moving forward, never mind 5 of them. The highest number I have ever seen was a squad, maybe a bit more. Never seen squad machine gun fire cause casualties, only AKs at very short range, or suppressive fire to pin down the enemy.
Infantry squad tactics involve moving infantry forward on foot. Sometimes the artillery and recon don't do their job and people die. But the point isn't to "overwhelm the machine gunner". The point is to do a push reconnaissance: move forward to take positions or force the enemy to reveal their strong points. This is followed by retreat and more artillery, or bringing in air/artillery/armor assets to deal with the strong points.
A "human wave" hasn't happened since WW1, it's all a myth perpetuated to reinforce racist stereotypes, as it's physically impossible to take a position armed with even a singe machine gun. Everyone who went to a military academy knows this.
There is a good video made by the marine corps demonstrating what a properly set up machine gun team with a belt fed machine gun can do: mow down thousands of enemy troops at 300 yards within seconds for hours at a time. A "human wave" of 10 thousand men can not take a single machine gun.
