As a native Washingtonian and a former tour guide. Night tours are awesome. You never know what you may see, especially at the Washington monument. I saw many a performance
Thank you for this comment. We are visiting DC next week. What sites do you recommend for night tour? I am doing self-tour with my two children. Thanks in advance!
As someone who is visiting during the summer from the humid desert sw, DC feels great! Don't be afraid, the weather is quite pleasant compared to the humid desert. Wonderful place to visit.
My great-grandfather was on the police force here in washington the night of lincoln's assassination. He went all over town trying to warn people that something might happen. How he figured it out, nobody seems to know. It's certainly not recorded anyplace. But there was so much publicity about it that people never forgot him. He became chief of police, then a councilman, did some wheeling and dealing in land, and became a millionaire.
Thanks for the video! I feel like DC is an underrated city in the United States; I don't understand how it's not more popular. So many interesting sites, entertainment choices, and wonderful restaurants. It's definitely a city that should be on a lot more people's radar
The entire DMV has reliable public transportation including the Gaylor/MGM via King Street(bus) or King's Street waterfront via water taxi. The only places that may have limited public transportation is in extremely affluent areas Glen Echo, MD or McLean.
For your first Segway ride, I recommend spending the extra money to do a guided Segway tour. 1. They know where to go, the really good places. 2. They will show you in actual situations what you can do, can't do, should do, and shouldn't do. It's more effective than just being told those at a rental checkout counter. 3. You have an employee for support in case you have operational issues or problems. For example our guide took us to where "Deep Throat" would secretly meet; took our picture by the Capitol pond with our camera, etc.
It was great to watch your video on DC. We were there in May & did a lot of what you spoke about. We went to Dupont Circle do dinner one night & went on the Metro. We did go on the very long subway escalator. We also did the Air & Space Museum & Washington Monument. We took the Circulator and di the Capitol Building tour. It is a great city. We only just scratched the surface. I would love to go back again. We tried Potbelly’s for linch & did the Ford Theatre tour. We also took the Amtrack train from Union Station to New York. 😊
Wow I’m truly amused by your commentary of travel tour guide to Washington D.C. I love how you analyze in-depth the history of Washington D.C & (DMV) area. I really appreciate/enjoyed your insight facts surrounding District of Columbia (DC), and all the nice hot tipster location to explore DMV area!
I strongly recommend attending Performances at the Kennedy Center. Take the Metro train to Foggy Bottom and there's a free red shuttle that will take you directly there. They usually have free daily show at 6pm. Reserve online or go to will call to request free tickets.
I remember when I was 20 years old. I was going on a school trip to Washington DC. When I told my youngest brother Jeremiah about it, he said, "Oh wow! You're so lucky!" Washington DC was fun, although I had to do lots and lots of walking.
Planning our first trip traveling from Florida in mid February and I'm so grateful for your video! Super informative. I took a ton of notes. Thank you!
We were in DC earlier this week and stayed at the Mayflower. We tried your recommendations around Dupont Circle and liked all of them. Thanks for the tips! We loved Moby Dick’s and would have missed it if you hadn’t recommended it!
I currently have a trip planned to D.C in mid October. Staying at the Intercontinental Willard - have you stayed here? How is it? I have a Pentaton, White House, and Capitol tour scheduled. Anything else I just get ahead of time you know of? Is the White House tour worth it? So much to do! So many options. Excellent video and I appreciate it very much.
Cool.. I have not stayed there. But that's as great as a location as it gets. Also look in to reservations for the Air and Space Museum and the Smithsonian Zoo if you want to do those. Enjoy your trip!
Chris, thanks for another great video. I learned a lot, though I have been to DC many times. The Smithsonian Castle is also currently closed for renovation. Rob, from Trip Hacks DC, said the pandas at the National Zoo may be returning to China at some point. Thanks again.
"Three US zoos currently host giant pandas: the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC has three, the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee has one and Zoo Atlanta in Georgia has four. The bears in Washington DC and Memphis will be sent to China by the end of the year[2023], according to statements from the zoos." The pandas in Atlanta are on loan through late 2024.
Rosslyn is pretty tall, but actually the longest escalator on the metro system is Wheaton station on the red line, in fact it's the longest escalator in the western hemisphere
Born and work in DC. Nice job. we have a beautiful city. Recommend cocktail at the rooftop bar at W, eats at the Old Ebbitt Grill. Be careful at Union Station.
You can take a water taxi from DC waterfront directly to National Harbor MD for about 25 bucks round trip. Good way to sneak in a side trip on your visit. I use it when I dont want to battle the traffic.
Thanks for this video! I'm flying out from the UK to DJ at Bluemoon Club which I gather is in the SW quadrant. We will get a bit of time to sight see and buy stuff. Very informative thanks.
I've been to DC a few times, but I still need to visit some of the other neighborhoods one of these days as well as check out the museums. I agree that flying into BWI to get to the DC area is not fun. Anytime I had to go to the DC area for work-related trips in the past, my boss always flew me into BWI since it was always the cheapest compared to Dulles and Reagan.
12:45 The first prices that came up on Google. Today is August 11, 2023 . The video does state that these are higher end. Mayflower - Now $339 (Was $461) Park Hyatt - Now $473 (Was $499). Indeed. I also said go in Winter. When I've been able to get the Park Hyatt for under $200 😀 that's one of the reasons I like DC.. Really good hotels you can get for cheap when it's the really low season
Unfortunately at this time, Summer is the only time my family and I can go. I live in SoCal so we're kinda used to the heat (just not East Coast heat). still I hope it's not too bad.
From DC and have lived here all my life. No one here calls it the DMV (that's a weird internet thing or something that transplants adopt). Fall is an amazing time to visit here. If you want to save a bit of money on hotels and want better food to eat, I always tell people to stay in MoCo or Arlington. The best restaurants in this area are NOT in the city but rather in the 'burbs. As long as you stay near a Metro and are in MoCo or Alexandria/Arlington/Roslyn you are fine. DO NOT be tempted to save money by staying in a cheap hotel in Southeast. I know people who did this and regretted it. Finally (and I cannot emphasize this enough) BE AWARE OF CRIME. There is crime here and it's been much more violent in the last few years than it had been in years. Keep your personal possessions on your body. Do not walk around with earphones in or your iPhone out and visible. Use a sling bag or something that stays tight to your body and carry ONLY what you need.
Just pointing out that you misspelled the airport acronym for Dulles, it’s IAD not AID. Also, you misspoke when you said that diagonal streets are named after streets, I think you mean they are names after states.
