  • German city of Leipzig is an example of a city that has been systematically working for years to restore it's canals and to return lost water to its landscape. And today I will tell you how it started and how it goes.

Same history at Lille (France), jt we failed to transform our buried canal. They try to ask at citizens which scenario to choose by voting between:
    1. All canals restored (32% votes)
    2. Half grass half restored canals (33% votes)
    3. Full grass (35%)
The question was stupid because we can consider that at least 65% wanted half of canals restored, but we will just have some grass with few trees 😢.
I didn't know the example of Leipzig, nice video.

Yep, seems that they've failed with that options. And what happened next? Was there any other attempts? What was public opinion about that results?

@@cityforall They will start working soon. They schedule to finish around 2028, just for few seats and grass ... Opinion is divided, but they said they won't turn back...

We just moved to Leipzig and took our first canoe expedition in the Plagwitz area. Just fantastic. They've done a magnificent job.

@@cityforall indeed a great town. We are really enjoying it. If all anyone knows about Liepzig is what they've heard about former East Germany, it is a completely different place now.

Great video! I wish more American cities would build canals as flood mitigation features. We seem to just rely on either dams or underground tanks and stormwater systems to help with flooding, but canals make cities so much nicer!

Toronto, Canada here. We are transforming our docklands on Lake Ontario into a large lakefront park for bicycles and pedestrians.

Really cool video! I will say, I don't think the vegetation in the canals is necessarily a bad thing, especially if the water quality is good: it makes for a nice humid habitat. Could probably benefit from some attention though, like by trimming some parts and purposefully introducing rare local plants that could enrich the flora

Agreed. Water plants are great for filtering the water and providing habitat for animals. Management can be tricky, but definitely worth it. IIRC, once the elements get balanced, the system is largely self-managing.

The construction of the bridge at 7:00 is finished. The bridge which is on the other side of this small park behind the trees is under construction now. When this bridge is completed the canal between these two bridges shall be build. The water can flow from mid/end 2025 cuz these were the last obstacles and the reed should disappear.

German from Berlin-Brandenburg here. Giving space to former canals is good. But these recreational, artificial lakes i see somewhat skeptic. Seems like every German state is doing it and they get bigger and bigger and the driving point is not nature or so.Its rather a weird mixture of federal money and the desperate hope of local politicians, that these lakes will generate some business in future, to substitute the loss of coal mines. Its also waste of fresh water in my opinion and does not longer fit sustainable water management. Also some lakes had or need to be temporary closed because shore slopes slipped, so it can turn dangerous. I am 50/50 on these kind of lakes.

Are there currently any plans for restoration/completion of Saale-Leipzig canal and possibly completion of bypass canal in Merserburg? Class IV waterway currently ends in Halle, it's extension would allow for ships up to 1500 tons to reach Leipzig.
