  • In this video , I show how I paint the edges of the tiles, and and mount them on mirrored frames I get from Ikea.

    Thanks Winetam12, I will do more videos eventually. Eye problems are preventing that right now , but soon hopefully. I can tell you that the pears painting took me quite a while, it is the only one of fruit I have done in ink. I will practice more pears so I can shorten the length of taping time. I like to keep things short and to the point. :)

    Jewel, it's a shame you haven't done any more tutorials. You do a great job at it and have shared some cool ideas to work with the tiles. Thanks for sharing.

    Dear Jewel, my name is Jan. I think I have become addicted to painting tiles. I usually paint in water colors, pastels, and sometimes acrylics. I found you on "utube" and I have learned so much from you. I am loving this new exciting way to create art. Thank you so very much for sharing your amazing instructions. I live on the Oregon coast where painting on tiles is rather new.

    Hello from Uk!!! Wish I had found you 4or 5 years ago! I bought some Alcohol Inks to play with but then couldn’t find AI tutorials ..... (for free) though I did find a couple who were selling DVDs but I couldn’t afford them😅. Anyway I returned to Acrylics and watercolours!
    Thank you for doing this as I have time for more frequent fun days & I have returned to play again and appreciate this idea for framing.... Brilliant!

    Vicki, the sealers I use are Grumbacher final resin based varnish or Krylon triple thick crystal clear glaze. I have not done trivets or back splashes, certainly they would need to be resined for a backsplash. Not sure how they would hold up to the heat for a trivet, but many make them into coasters. I would not put them into a dishwasher, but if sealed well they would wipe up nicely with a damp cloth.

    Very nice! Could you do a tutorial video of the tile with the pear painting? Very beautiful! I like that you also show how you frame and display them, as well. Thank you -- please do more videos!! :-)

    Thank you for sharing this great video...I, too, have been experimenting with AI and am enjoying another creative side of my crafting. I have been making floor tile pendants..they've turned out real well. I am not an artist per se, so the drop ink method is my style...ink is very forgiving too. 😊

    Great idea! Love your shelves in the back ground. So like mine. I clean up, straighten out...lasts about a week. I wish I had a room of my own...now I'm in the small eating area in the kitchen. Blessings

    Jewel, I had been looking for something to put my tiles in or on for a couple weeks...and just yesterday I thought, "Hey, I wonder if those $1.99 mirror frames I got from IKEA would work?!" Great minds think alike, I say. ;-). Ha,ha

    Thank you Jewel, I was wondering how I was going to display my tiles. I don't have an Ikea here in Northern New Hampshire, but I'm sure I could find inexpensive frame.

      No Ikea in my area either, but I am lucky enough to have family who travel to the big city and get me some. If my tile is not square, I go to Home Depot and they will cut the size I need from MDF boards. I then sand the edges and roll with a couple coats of black or white house paint.

    Your artwork is so beautiful, Jewel! You're also an excellent teacher - very clear and concise. I've never painted with AI, but you make me want to try. Thank you very much for the video. Did you have an artistic background before painting with the AI?

      Thank you Shelly. I have always been artistic, but only really got serious about painting when my kids started to leave the nest ( the studio you see used to be our basement family room) Now I do art shows several times a year. I teach alcohol ink workshops and always tell students that you really don't need painting and drawing skills to do it. Just get a few colors and some tiles and give it a try, you will have so much fun. You can see more of my work on my fb art page Jewel Buhay Art.

    Sorry, but what size tiles are you using with the framed mirror and what size is the frame? So loving this and now want to try my hand at painting tiles. Thanks!

      The tile is 6" square and the frame is 10" square.

    Hi, I loved your tutorials. I am just starting my journey with alcohol Inks. I am captivated by the vibrantcy or the colors., I am planning on attending some classes here in .NC. where did you learn? Josieart

    • @island_jewel57
      @island_jewel57 10 років тому

      Thanks Jo, I discovered AI on line and was fascinated. I ran out and bought some inks and tiles and just dove in. I bought Wendy Videlock's video and I joined an AI facebook group and the artists there were very helpful. Many are from NC. I pretty much took the techniques I learned from them and developed some of my own. Now I am doing workshops and teaching others in my area. Who knew inks would be so much fun! Enjoy your journey : )

    Beautiful,thanks for sharing. Please tell me the name of the sealer and do you know if these can be used as trivets and back splashes ( washable ). Vicki

      I let the tile cure for a few days, and now I seal with a couple coats of Krylon Kamar spray first, and then when it is dry follow with a few light coats of Grumbacher final resin based varnish or Kylon crysal clear Triple Thick varnish. Let dry 8 hours between each coat. .Don't use alcohol based sprays, they will dissolve the inks. If you top with a coat of resin, the tiles work well as coasters and would likely work in backsplashes, but as far as using as trivets for hot pots, I do not know if the resin would stand up to the extreme heat. Hope this helps.

    I have yet to find a sealer that protects tiles painted with alcohol inks. Any suggestions?

    • @island_jewel57
      @island_jewel57 8 років тому +2

      I use 3 sealers....1st is Krylon Kamar Spray. 2nd is Krylon gallery series U.V. archival varnish, and 3rd is Rustoleum ultra cover 2X clear gloss. I use 2-3 light coats of each, leaving a few hours drying time between each coat. It will be well sealed, but if you were doing a coaster, I would use resin.

    do you put tiles in oven at all? have you heard of VHT, high temp. engine enamel? protective finish chip resistant, can withstand heat up to 550'. I bought in an auto store?

    • @island_jewel57
      @island_jewel57 7 років тому

      I have never baked or used engine products on my tiles, though I know some people do. I think that is mainly if they want to use the tiles as trivets.

  • @deanenterprizes
    @deanenterprizes 6 років тому

    What do you seal with? I could not hear.

    • @island_jewel57
      @island_jewel57 6 років тому

      I am currently using Krylon Kamar as the base sealer. Then I use a U.V. spray and finally Rustoleum 2X gloss to bring back some shine. 3 coats of each, leaving a few hour drying time between each.
