    Super helpful overview! I've seen the MUF map before but didn't really understand how to use it. Now I do. Well done video.

    Great explanations and very helpful as I'm reading about propagation on Mars. Fun fact: the critical frequency on Mars is around 4Mhz, +/- a little depending on the solar cycle, so about a third of what it is here on Earth.

    Thanks for a great explanation of MUF. But, 2 questions...refracted vs reflected? And shouldn't the earth be flat in that first graphic?

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  11 місяців тому +1

      Hey Bob. Refracted is the correct work for bouncing signal off the sky AND unfortunately I couldn't find an actual correct depiction of the flat earth. The spherist agenda runs that deep...

    That was great. that is a great tool for chasing DX . what a storm that came threw the US. I am in NY and we got the high wind and heavy rain . crazy warm one day. up around 50F . day later 32F . power out all over. trees down all over. but intense storms has a effect on propagation . I noticed this hear threw the HF bands as it moves. a nice marker to listen to is WWV/WWVH . and they on 25 MHz now. outher types of skip is NVIS and multi hop. and of course ducting . but I find the MUF a great tool to get started. I made many 10 meter contacts when the band was down. solar min. used gray line . does not last long and changes all the time. this data on the MUF map is near real time. WWV sends the solar data as well. they send some funny sounds tracking propagation as well. when no internet that a on air way to track conditions . WWV 2.5/5/10/15/20/25 MHz . they on 24/7 . I sync my PC clock manual to that beep and got me close enough to work FT8 with out internet or GPS. my PC laptop keeps good time except when real hot of cold then it drifts. 73's

    In Alaska, MUF should be correct (as with everywhere else) but many times MUF is 7 MHz (or something) and here I am banging away on 20m and making plenty of contacts. MUF is an ok "tool" but you really don't know util you turn the HF radio on and try. Alaska does indeed have a tilted ionosphere which complicates everything, many times making it more fun...

    • @TheSmokinApe

      Yeah, MUF is an estimation. You make a good point about getting on the air and trying 👍

    There would have to be refraction of great distance ,because of the angles ,does refraction really qualify to describe this distance or is this distance really just conductance for hf ?🤔

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  Рік тому +1

      The angle of the refraction is the incidence angle, it’s based off the takeoff angle of the signal and the angle determines the distance. Hopefully I explained that correctly 👍

    • @CurtNovitsky
      @CurtNovitsky 11 місяців тому

      @@TheSmokinApe I think your explanation is correct in the teachings but I question the teachings ,it seems hf is similar to vhf ducting not refraction ,it is difficult to imagine refraction can be responsible for dx using hf ,and I think it's more of a conductive path the atmosphere is providing for dx not so much a refraction due to changing medium thanks for reply❤️👍
