- Mtskheta is one of the oldest cities in Georgia, and is a former capital city. It’s just 20km north of Tbilisi, and definitely worth your time.
From the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, Mtskheta was the capital city of the Kingdom of Iberia. Since 1994, it’s been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city is known for the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the Jvari Monastery, which sits on top of a nearby mountain and offers spectacular views over the river and city below.
The population is around 8000 people so it’s not a very large city, but it is a wonderful place to go for a day trip from Tbilisi.
To get to the Jvari Monastery, you need to find a taxi and negotiate a price. More likely, they will approach you.

Excellent. On our way there tomorrow. We also collect fridge magnets. 😀
The guided day trips from Tbilisi don't cost much. Is there a reason you didn't do that?
