    Skating is the fountain of youth. I started inline skating at age 48, and roller skating at age 49. Now, at the age of 68, I'm learning to skate the ramps and half-pipes at skateboard parks on my roller skates. Aches and pains? Sure. Just take an Advil and keep on truckin'.

    I'm self taught since I was 5 and because my parents never supported me I was always alone with the same old skates I BEGGED for (the only thing my parents ever bought me). And after I moved out and had to concentrate on my carrier and health I never had the chance to come back to the ice. Now I'm 29 and I was so afraid to go back to the ice. Afraid of being laughed at while trying to practice. It really breaks my heart.
    After watching this very short video I'm motivated for the first time to make my dream come true and taking figure skating classes. Thank you so so so much for that spark of motivation!

    Love this video. I discovered it last week and watch it again and again. I researched about the woman Rhea Swartz who came up with figure skating for adults 18 and older and how she came up with competitions for adults as well. That brought a huge smile to my face. Not everyone is fortunate enough that started off skating as kids, competed as kids, stuck with it as teens until adulthood and competed for major events like Nationals, Worlds, and Olympics. Most people wished it would happen to them but that's not reality for most people. What Rhea Swartz came up with competitions for adults 18 and older, gives adults opportunities to train and compete and devote a lifetime to the sport and there's different levels one can pass as an adult. There should be more books, catalogs, and commercials on this subject to urge adults who are gifted recreational ice skaters who want to train and compete. You're never too old to learn, skate, and follow your dreams.

    • @lifeskater9899
      @lifeskater9899 6 років тому +6

      Through Rhea Schwartz's efforts, adult skaters have finally gotten the recognition they rightfully deserve, especially through USFS. Before Rheah, adult skating camps and adult only competitions didn't exist. I participated in the first two Adult Nationals (aka AN), Inaugural 1994, and 1995. Since then the adult skating community has increased 1000%. Bravo!

      Ron Matheny find the nearest good ice rink by where you live and sign up for group classes. They are usually once a week with people in your skill level. If you've never skated before, you'll also be with beginners:) Talk to the figure skating director or adult skating director about what your goals are and introduce yourself. Ask if there is anyone that teaches private lessons to your age. Have fun! Hope this helps:)

      Ron Matheny - Ron, another Ron here! Started a little earlier than you, at age 29 after dreaming about it for years. Desire is an EXCELLENT motivator - within the year my coaches had me competing (here I thought I'd take lesson just to learn how to stop!..or even maybe skate backwards!?#!) - those were the BEST years of my life and also placed me in THE arena when Tonya wacked Nancy in Detroit (*made it ALL worthwhile*!!) - Life and work got in the way eventually as well as an accident that shattered my knee. BUT, today I find myself at 57 also and WANT to make a return to the ice. . . I miss it so. GO, find a rink, let's both do this!

    Marvellous to see older people skating well. My advice as an older skater, 57, is find a teacher, and do what they say. A teacher will ensure you learn correct technique, and you’ll learn much faster. Half an hour a week is enough as long as you do at least two hours practice a week, preferably lots more.

      (Just a suggestion) - You could start by enrolling in Group lessons at your local rink. Groups meet once weekly. Pay one price for, i.e., 8 weeks, or however long your rink runs the Program. After completing Groups, you could go Private. Of course, it depends on the Pro's fees, however, believe it or not, some don't mind teaching 15 min. lessons if you discuss that fact beforehand-that's what I did when I first started skating because I couldn't afford the full 1/2 hr. You'd be surprised what you could learn in 15 mins. if you let your Pro know what you'd like to learn before hitting the ice-doing so saves time. Good luck.

      Elaine N I know the feeling! I used to compete in roller skating and now many years later at 52 I go to a local ice rink once or twice a week to work on ice skating skills. It's a lot of fun and I'd really like to get into adult competition, but financially it's totally out of the question at this time. Too bad it's so hard for adult skaters to get sponsorships.

    • @susanlim2322
      @susanlim2322 6 років тому

      It is a SUPER EXPENSIVE SPORT. Even with group lesson you need ice time to practice, skates, and every 20hours sharpening your skates. If you get better you need private lesson which are 40 buck per 30 minute plus better skates which can range from 100-500 dollars. I look at the parents at lessons and my mind expodes at the finances they go through if their kids is good. It's no joke that figure skating is a "prim and upper class sport"

    Yeah I just wanted to learn to ice skate since I taught myself roller skate a bit, but stopped after a while, now I'm 34 and I would like to learn to ice skate. I told my folks and of course they put a damper on shit and said "oh you'll break an ankle and won't be able to work" I was like ah fuck, well that's nice to hear. I thought people that broke their ankles had their skates too loose or they aren't the right size. That's my guess. I wouldn't mind skating maybe learn hockey. I don't expect to be great or anything, but it's something I wanted to learn for ME. So am I too old? Should I walk around being scared to do anything? Can't learn to ride a horse, could get hurt, can't work. Can't ride a bike could fall off get hurt, I mean wtf REALLY? Wtf is the point of just working if you can't do shit?
