I think a lot of people just don’t realize what makes Marcelo so perceptive on the mat. He openly tells people his secret. When he trains with someone , from day one on if he gets them in an advantageous position , he knows how he got there so he’s not afraid to let them try to escape . Naturally every position has multiple escapes , reverses , submissions , defenses .
People think Marcelo beats them outright and these days he does because he’s seen so many things and trained and competed so much how that he spent a long time. Learning.
If you can wrap your mind around it the thing is you TEACH Marcelo how to beat you. A lot of people have this ego where they won’t get a sweep , but not completely cone to the top and see how you recover . That’s where Marcelo wins. He knows exactly how the breakdown and trouble shoot the moves . He’s not even really going at this point . It’s what I call “at will grappling “ and we all have a certain level of it. Marcelo is mostly on autopilot just doing what feels good
Think of it, most jiu jitsu athletes all use a game , taught by their master. You may do and like different moves or transitions but it’s all a part of a game you learned . If he catches on to your game he just really mentally lays out the options and probability .
The other thing Marcelo does is basically trains to know his limits . Lots of Jiu jitsu athletes don’t know our limits and how hard exactly we can push any given move or our cardio.
That’s why you see guys gas so much in Jiu jitsu and wrestling Matches. You’re just kinda trying your best and if you get tired ? Try to work through it. Marcelo is really good at actively managing his fatigue and knowing when a series will yield good success based on how he’s feeling . Most people try over and over again a movement pattern until they tire. Marcelo talks all the time about knowing what you can do and how hard you can go and knowing your body and conditioning to stay in a match and not get drug out into deep water.
