I mostly used my hue lights with the zigbee stick to avoid having two different zigbee networks competing with each other in my home but really hated losing the music effects from hue. This just confirms that whilst I do lose some functionality, its the right move

I don't have any Philips Hue device, but was considering 1 or 2 in the futures. If they enforce that policy, then no way. Big brother wants to know every little detail of our lives. The crazy part is that many will accept the new policy and not blink. So with low social credit score for the day, you can't turn on your lights.

That part apart low credit score then we will keep your lights off is scary

Ive kept my hub (despite being told by the HA community that i should link the devices directly with HA) because i like the comfort blanket that if HA goes offline then i still have access to lights. This might well be the nudge i need to go direct connection now.

I disconnected my hue hub a few years ago and moved the devices to Homeassistant.
I never bought any hue equipment and glad I didn‘t.
So this really doesn‘t bother me but I feel for people that do.

That follow up video would be quite eye opening to actually see the data that they collect.

Phillips Hue have said that they are putting matter on their hubs and will not be making thread controlled bulbs. Does this allow their hubs to collect data from other matter devices and send it to Phillips Hue?

It’s not that I don’t care but I think we underestimate how much of our data is tracked and this is just one instance of many. This is not to say be ignorant of how your info is handled though.
I appreciate the research u put into this by the way. I’m curious if there’s a war to spoof the sensitive information they would share? This would solve a lot of problems without the need to be so anxious about data responsibility of companies.

Personally, many companies do this and worse. Forcing users to create accounts to use their devices, I’m not a fan of in general

Phillips Hue constantly try connect to a china based server for NTP and you cannot change this no matter what - Can block it in firewall but it keeps trying constantly regardless with no opt out

Thanks for highlighting this Geo, no pun intended. I have a similar experience to you with Philips Hue being a (very) early adopter and despite being a big HomeAssistant user I still use the Philips Hue hub, my logic being that it has always been reliable and I am always making changes to HomeAssistant so to avoid impacting a basic function, like can the family switch on and off lights if HomeAssistant is offline, I have retained the Hub. This latest information will probably encourage me to ditch the hub and move the 52 Philips Hue devices I have over to HomeAssistant. I have not purchased a Philips Hue device for 3 or 4 years now as they are just too expensive, and I think I never will again.

@@SmartHomeMakers Been thinking about this, I think the short-term way forward for me is to block the Phillips Hue hub from accessing the internet (easy to do with my Unifi set-up), I will still be able to control the devices remotely through HomeAssistant.

I stopped using Philips hue three or four years ago. When they started raising their prices. I originally started out with Philips hue when I started with home assistance. But I saw the writing on the wall a long time ago. There is so many better cheaper options. But unfortunately a lot of people bought in to their ecosystem and are kind of stuck now

I already share enough with Google, though they have a heap of great Free software. Not the most expensive light globe on the market.....

@@SmartHomeMakers Well, I don't know what is a lot, but I do have nearly 50 (the hubs limit) and was thinking of adding a second hub to expand and use Alexa with two hubs thanks to New matter release. Now I am considering something else. I have Home assistant with Sonoff Dongle, so may transfer everything on it and expand with another Brand.
