Some languages have really, REALLY long words. But they're not just full of random letters. There's a pattern to the grammar of letter-filled words that won't quit. It's called "compounding". It's a word-building strategy used in Greek, German and even Polynesian languages like Hawai'ian.
It was my jarring run-in with really long words in that third language that brings me to this story. Come with me, and learn a bit about how Hawaiian words are built. And why when you flip open a Hawaiian dictionary, the words all seem so short, but when you see it in practice, you'll sometimes run into a real monster or two.
So, does that mean Hawaiian has the longest words ever?
Not tellin'. You'll have to watch.
* The chemical name for Titin? Welsh? [Insert-long-word-here]?
I went with the decision by Guinness World Records. They ruled out artificial words like chemical nomenclature and words created to test long word limits. Place names are often considered separately, but I mention them here. The Welsh name mentioned in multiple comments isn't as long as the Maori hill on the books for longest single-word place name. The longest place name (not constructed as a single word) may be the poetic/sung Thai name for Bangkok.
Though it wasn't the point of the video (the compounding strategy was), it's a conversation starter: what are the criteria for longest word? Many comments just disagree; essentially, "what about [my_word]?!?" I'd be interested to see even more good discussion on the decision-making process.
* AVERAGE WORD LENGTH (asterisked in the video)
Preliminary data from my homemade script that parsed limited samples in several languages. My sample text came from Wikipedia articles in each language. See the credits link at the bottom for more about it.

don’t german numbers compound? And if numbers are infinite, doesn’t that mean that the longest word would be infinitely long?
I don't know about German, but Dutch is quite similar in word structure and in Dutch, we separate the thousands, millions, billions, etc. Also, I believe millions/billions/etc. themselves are separate as well.
As in: "ninehundredandninetynine million ninehundredandninetyninethousand ninehundredandninetynine" (but in Dutch).
English numbers do the same thing, but only end up hyphenated between 21 and 99 or 100 excluding multiples of 10. This could pretty easily just be extended to include all numbers and then you'd have things like five-hundred-and-twelve-billion-four-hundred-and-thirty-two-million-four-hundred-and-twenty-thousand-sixty-nine which could maybe work? Another thing to consider is that we can technically add infinite prefixes to a number. For example, duotrigintillion. These however would increase in value exponentially faster than the length of the word would increase so they become unpractical quickly

The language that actually has the largest average syllable number in word use might be Greek. Not only do we have some uber-long words through compounding, but we also have longer words than say English or French because there are significantly less different sounds in Greek. Even monosyllabic words like case or rest are περίπτωση and ξεκούραση/ανάπαυση which are all like 4 syllables! There are hardly any Greek words that are shorter than the respective English ones.
Kalidasa's sanskrit or even average classical sanskrit has more syllables considering the fact that literature composition in classical sanskrit is still going on.
This is just a random verse from a sanskrit play "Raghuvansham"

@@Aman-qr6wi I mean that's cool, but then again words used in poetry sometimes aren't really normally used in a language. What I was saying is that Greek, because it has fewer available sounds than other languages, has longer words for what other languages have shorter ones. I didn't consider compound/agglutinative words, which would in other languages be expressed with an entire phrase.
@@georgios_5342 I agree.
Sanskrit on the other hand has large number of consonants and it uses lots of clusters and small words for basic ideas but if we agglutinate, it's not simply adding words, it's a complex change which changes sounds of the syllable which is governed by Sandhi rules eg. Nar+ indra= narendra, "I" changed to "E". This is most basic example but there more complex rules which is taught at graduation level.
Regarding small words, in sanskrit, washing machine can be expressed in three syllable while iron press can be expressed in two syllables!
The longest word is actually the name for a protein and it takes like hours to say.

Damn! I just stumbled upon this channel, owing to my insatiable curiosity towards language etymology and linguistic origins. On a side note, I have learnt both Sanskrit and German and have oftentimes noticed that both languages tend to have such a similar way of compounding words, particularly in literary texts where they use it to add extra "flowery-ness" to the language, in spite of being miles apart geographically.
Sanskrit, unlike german just do not add words together to form larger words. Sanskrit has a very precise and complex grammatical rules laid down by linguist Panini himself. These are called Sandhi rules. Words when combine change their sounds, vowels undergo changes along with consonants.
@@Aman-qr6wi similarly, German also adds Sandhis to create or change meanings of words. I know about Panini and how great the language is. However, it is interesting to observe the similarities that two geographically separated languages seem to have.
@@spandi95 no, german simply add words without any phonetic changes.
Eg. Deutsch+ land= deutschland.

Syntactically, English has significantly shorter words than its Germanic relatives, because English uses spaces between compounded base words, but semantically, a compound word is a compound word, regardless of whether its components are separated by spaces, hyphens, or nothing at all. Terms like "driving licence", "customs officer" or even the word "compound word" itself are, in fact, single words, even though they are written (in English) as though they are two.
Robert Faber Thanks god its easier to read that way :D
Faick LOG Oh, I don't know... My native language is Dutch, so I have to deal with non-separated compound words all the time, and I've never found them particularly hard to read or write...
Yeah I think it just depends on your native language, mine's French so it has separated compound words aswell so its easier for me to read.

Wow, it's so cool how this absolutely-inane-but-totally-viable-and-socially-acceptable method of tying together perhaps-unrelated-and-varied words to create a glorious-and-compounded word exists!
Sanskrit, unlike german just do not add words together to form larger words. Sanskrit has a very precise and complex grammatical rules laid down by linguist Panini himself. These are called Sandhi rules. Words when combine change their sounds, vowels undergo changes along with consonants.

Chemical name of titin? no? that word is like 180,000 letters long
Chemical and technical words are not allowed.
Umm... the chemical name of titin is titin. Same with any other protein. Proteins (indeed a large number of chemicals) are not referred to by their verbal formulae because they are unnecessarily long and complex though it does significantly aid understanding for small compounds. Do you mean the full formulaic name documenting every amino acid? Well can you show me anywhere that has been written other than for the sole purpose of writing it?
Anyway as MrFrostburner noted this is examining everyday words from natural languages not technical languages or vocabularies.
contains 189,819 letters and is sometimes stated to be the longest word in the English language, or any language
Why aren't chemical or technical words allowed? prescriptivism is no way to be a linguist. So what if it was given a long name for fun, so was llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogoch. It and titin follow the rules that the other words do, or does it just not feel right.
Vegeta
But it is not a word in any language. It has never been published in any technical paper or included in any dictionary. It is a purely constructed term from IUAPC naming rules specifically to create an extremely long word. It is a perfect example of why such technical terms (not that it is a technical term) are not included in these sorts of conversations, especially not formulaic names of complex macromolecules.
But longest Non-Compound?

I'm disappointed that you totally ignored scientific words. They aren't common, but they exist and are meaningful.
Meaningful, but a bit too rigid and easy to predict. Like titin's IUPAC name
I won't deny that they aren't very relevant to actual language usage, but a little comment would be nice because they are technically the longest words.
Somewhere around there is a video of the full name of the protein Titin. It's a massive string of syllables that states every amino acid.
Also, scientists don't really use those long names very often. Acronyms, like "DNA", nicknames, etc. get used whenever it will not lead to misunderstandings.
And when acronyms would lead to misunderstandings, usually a disambiguation is used instead of going full out. e.g. E. coli, and E. lenta would be ambiguous about being in the same genus, so usually one would most likely just add one more letter Es. coli, and Eg. lenta, rather than writing each genus out entirely every time.

And he asked a guy at the hotel for directions and the guy was like, "Well, first you go down blah blah blah and turn right on blah blah blah," etc. but he was saying all of these Hawaiian-sounding names and it was hilarious. Too bad I don't know the comedian's name.
In other news, I play a lot of video games, including RPG's and when I want names for my characters I always look up the names of gods that are similar to the character I plan to make. Like a fire mage/wizard might be named after a fire god such as: Tcolawitze, a Zuni fire god. Anyhow, I like to trip people out with one of the first ones I ever used which was Hawaiian: Hi'iaka'ika'poli'o'Pele. Which literally means "Hiʻiaka in the bosom of Pele" Pele being the goddess of volcanoes and fire, and Hi'iaka being her sister.
"Hiʻiaka was conceived in Tahiti, but carried in the form of an egg to Hawaiʻi by Pele, who kept the egg with her at all times to incubate it. From this, she earned her full name, Hiʻiaka-i-ka-poli-o-Pele: "Hiʻiaka in the bosom of Pele". Hiʻiaka is Pele's favorite and most loyal sister, although they have also had their differences. Hiʻiaka was the first God of this pantheon (the Pele family) born in Hawaii."
