i am new practitioner and going to start my judo practice next week. What's the difference between osoto gari and osoto otoshi ? Looks like a variation to osoto gari to me. Please enlighten me thank you =D
No, the difference is in the leg motion. O-soto Otoshi is a sliding backwards, almost stamping down dropping motion (Otoshi - drop) to lift the weight bearing leg, whereas O-Soto Gari is the reaping, swinging motion (Gari - reap).
I believe the difference is that in "o-soto-gari" your reaping leg is doing just that - reaping and thus ideally continue momentum by going upwards. In o-soto-otoshi you are not really reaping in the same way, but kinda make a deep low (otoshi) "step" backwards instead, to the simillar, possibly less brutal, effect.
@@NivoUF Correct. In Osotogari tori's body takes a T shape because of the upward reaping action of the leg. In Osoto otoshi the reaping leg moves diagonally backwards and touches the tatami.
A very interesting variation of Osoto otoshi by Isamu Sonoda-san, Olympic and World gold medalist. He calls it Osoro gari but if you watch carefully you can see it's something between the two techniques. ua-cam.com/video/cUjT4dIyrpE/v-deo.html
@@bagelpap I agree, it looks like O soto otoshi to me as well, especially as the opponent's leg is stepping way back to reach it as a usual o soto gari.
Yes, for me, I see the difference where the gari takes the uke very early with kuzushinand the sweeping of the leg is balanced: not much force needed. I see the Otoshi and a purposeful step, like the zenkuchadachi stance of karate forms, very driven and purposeful where some delivery of force maybe necessary. I have used this technique in real defense long before judo. Instinctive and not as much balance required it seems.
This and Osoto-gari are my tokui-waza. Thank you for these splendid videos!!!🥋🙏🙂-

Do you plant your sweeping foot on the ground and snap it like tai otoshi?
@@Majin_Doh we place the sweeping leg behind their knee then drop down onto the supporting knee

O-soto-gari you reap the leg upwards. Otoshi you pull down while hooking uke's leg straight back, like you're doing a back walking luge.
How's this different from an O Soto gari?
sweeping vs stabbing motion
Leg raises upwards in osoto gari. Leg moves down and touches floor in otoshi. StudentinFrance is right.
Who is this Master? Name? Thanks

I thought this is O Soto Gari. Now I am really confused

Leg rising or leg not rising is the difference. Gari rising up, otoshi stabbing backwards.
