This mass setting was composed by Venetian composer Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785) for the choir of St. Mark's Basilica in 1765, where he served as "maestro di capella" at the Doge's chapel. To the extent that he is remembered today, it is usually for his comic operas written in collaboration with Carlo Goldoni, or in the English-speaking world, as part of the title of the poem "A Toccata of Galuppi's" by Robert Browning. Clearly he was a composer of prodigious talents, writing music in the galant style of the mid-18th century.

Video realizzato il 23 maggio 2014 nella splendida chiesa degli Eremitani (Padova) per l'inaugurazione del Veneto Festival guidato dal benemerito maestro Claudio Scimone che, quel giorno, ha proposto due splendide Messe: la "Messa dell'incoronazione" di Mozart e la prima esecuzione in tempi moderni della "Messa per il riscatto degli schiavi" di Baldassare Galuppi, detto il Buranello. La "Messa per il riscatto degli schiavi" risale al 1765, anno in cui Galupppi si trasferì a San Pietroburgo, in Russia, su invito dell'imperatrice Caterina II («Je suis curieuse de voir si Buranello saura me rendre la musique intéressante» confidò l'imperatrice a Casanova). La Messa fu commissionata al Galuppi dal Senato veneto che voleva celebrare il ritorno in patria dei veneziani catturati durante battaglie o incursioni piratesche e condotti in schiavitù nella Costa dei Barbari (la costa mediterranea del Nordafrica). Un gruppo di questi fu liberato grazie all'iniziativa diplomatica (e dei soldi pagati in riscatto) della Serenessima Repubblica. Galuppi a quell'epoca (1765) era "maestro di cappella" della Basilica di San Marco, che era la chiesa ufficiale del Doge e della Repubblica veneta.
La Messa si compone solo delle prime tre parti: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo. La Messa, nella sua semplicità, è un bastione di ispirazione, specialmente per quanto riguarda la scrittura della parte vocale. La scrittura orchestrale di Galuppi, profondamente contrappuntistica, qui diventa cantabile e "popolare", con alcune parti del "Credo" di grande dolcezza.

This composer seems to have been unjustly neglected. This is a fine mass. And the performance is excellent. Thanks! I'm wondering where the Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei went. Or is this a Lutheran mass? (Probably not, because Venice was Catholic, not Lutheran.)
The numbering which appears a little too briefly at inception suggests, to me, that this most-respectable reading is excerpted. Consider JS Bach's archetypal Mass in b: It consists of far more movements than three (you can count them for yourself).

I am confident that this work could be represented to PhDs in Music as an early masterpiece of Haydn's -- or perhaps a newly discovered work of Leopold Mozart's. None would be the wiser.

I am curious as to the title. Were celebratory Eucharists held when salve ships returned. If so what a tragic history for such a beautiful piece of music.
