Big companies being allergic to new ideas is why indie animation is thriving. People are tired of constant sequels and live action remakes Disney…
Because every studio wants *every* release to be a billion dollar blockbuster. They’ve completely forgotten how to take risks on smaller $5-, $10-, and $20-million dollar projects.

Not gonna lie, I’m surprised there was no mention of Rooster Teeth. They were like the first truly in-house indie animation/multimedia studio that strictly produced for the web. While there were projects like Homestar Runner with a team behind it (Brothers Chaps), or outliers like John K’s weird George Liquor shorts, they weren’t a pro studio like Spumco and all their stuff was web-based. It’s even sadder considering they just shut down a few days ago.
Yup. If the company fully indie and left its corporate overlords, they could of saved themselves, and maybe opened up a gumroad, Patreon, SubscribeStar, etc accounts to sustain themselves instead.
I was also surprised at no mention of Monty Oum. Absolutely tragic what happened to him.
Thanks for shouting out Monkey Wrench!! That series deserves SO much more love than the algorithm is giving it.

The world of indie web animation really shows that the Internet gives animators and other artists more creative freedom to showcase their passion project than the animation industry would ever be.
Also, Lackadaisy is considered to be the veteran out of all the modern web series, considering that it started off as web comic back in 2006, aka the Wild West era of the Internet.

Indie Animation is the reason why I haven't stopped creating art. Even though a lot of big companies are ruining their employees and shows by trying to cut jobs with AI and cutting funds on cartoons that need more time in the oven, I'm happy that the Indie Animation space is the exact opposite of that and has such a positive environment from what I've noticed. It gives me hope for the future of animation that more projects will be backed by people who actually loves to see projects reach their full potential no matter how crazy their idea might be while also still providing to their animators / teams. As a dream animator in college right now, I appreciate this amazing history lesson. Indie Animation had some more history than I thought! Many people close to me believe Disney is my route whenever I speak of my major. Indie always stuck out to me. I HOPE it stays like this and I hope my luck increases once I enter the real world entirely.
All I am going to say is:
Shine on, you crazy diamond, and don't let others shoehorn your dreams into a corporate soul grinder.
Excited for you! Good luck. You can do this.
If you do work for Disney…don’t let them know about your stories. Do the work, collect your paycheck then work on the indie project on the side. Use them. Don’t sell your soul to them
I love how roots of GLITCH are in Luke's channel - SMG4, that kept going for over a decade and is hanging on till this day. And it's huge in fact.

@@1_Helluva_Hazbin_Fella that's what I'm doing
Because of wildly popular SMG4 was and is, it acts a funnel for Indie animation funding... in essence, giving a corporate level of funding to organize Glitch better.
@@Pikaclev True, true. I have a feeling it's sometimes even their experimental field. Whether if it's for characters, stories, VAs etc.
I'm not watching their content after the controversy with Tari's voice actress, or the treatment of the characters of the main SMG4 series. I've been done with SMG4 for over a year now.
I’m just excited that other than _Amazing Digital Circus, Murder Drones_ and _Lackadaisy_ were getting more original Indie Animation projects through the likes _Port by the Sea_ and _Ramshackle_ cause lately every major studio has been canceling animated series projects left and right and doing "Tax-write offs".
I think most animators and creators should follow what Vivziepop and her crew are doing with _Helluva Boss_ and even gooseworx is doing for _Amazing Digital Circus_ where they stay independent as possible while the creators have more creative freedom and control without the restrictions and guidelines put on the highers up of the major studio. However if said project does get acquired by a major studio the creators of the show need to have creative freedom and control of the IP.
Yeah! And heck there are so many good projects out there. If I have to reccomend one myself, I'd say "Tales of Zale" by Sif Savery. That one is especially immaculate. And Sif is actually working on making it a full series, collaborating with a network and a professional studio, and the future does seem pretty bright for her series, at least for now.
What has Netflix been cancelling lately in terms of animation?
@@justinstewart9145 A lot of animated originals that aren’t _Big Mouth_ or _Castlevania_ and cancelled for a Season or Two (e.g. Dead End, Inside Job) and let’s not forget Netflix also scrapped plans for a "Bone" animated series.
@@drdewott9154 That’s amazing and honestly I’m perfectly ok if Indie Animated series stays independent or gets picked by a studio but If an Indie Animated series gets picked up by a major studio I wish the studio gives the creators and animators creative control and freedom with the show.
Danny Antonucci who created _Ed, Edd n Eddy_ wanted to pitch the show to Nickelodeon but Nick wanted full control on it but Danny declined and took _Ed, Edd n Eddy_ to Cartoon Network and allowed Danny creative control and freedom for the show.
@@EChacon I feel like Netflix is a mixed bag. For every issues mentioned, they have also saved Nimona, allowed Arcane, have shows like Cyberpunk Edgerunners and the Scott Pilgrim anime, Dragon Prince, Blue Eyes Samurai, etc. Kind of feels like for every bad, there they do something right. The same can't be said for WB.

He's mentioned it a few times by now I think. But yeah, Monkey Wrench is a criminally underrated show and they need more money if we are ever going to see any fully animated episodes again. It's easily my favorite indie animated show out there.
The story behind Undertale is really interesting. It was partner game that was like a test for a game that couldn't be fully realized yet. People loved it as it to an insane degree. It ended up developing such an overwhelmingly passionate fandom that not only could the game Toby Fox wanted to make all along could be made, but that fans would be devoted enough to wait for YEARS between chapters of the game being made and still willing to fund its realization in those years.

Monkey Wrench mention!!! You should do a full video on it. It’s highly underrated and deserves more love!
As someone going indie himself, I agree that it’s time to fire up a revolution for independent projects. Not just with animation, but webcomics as well because they get adapted into media all the time like Invincible. Some of my favorite Webtoon comics include Da Yomanille Gang, Straylight Tiger, Señorita Cometa, Axed, Supersonic Girl, Outrage, Dinosaur Bones, Ape Yacht Kookies, Space Pack, and World in the Waves. For many indie artists, making an animated pilot just isn’t in the cards, but don’t let that stop you guys. Just make something you truly care about and other people will love too
Indie web comics have catered to niche interest and fringe topics for a long time. There were entire webrings dedicated to them back in the 90s. If anything, the revolution already happened 30+ years ago.
You got Indie Animation money?
It's like one of my favorite channels, Dead Sound, who does indie animation. he is a 1 person team who just started to use other musicians for his animations. Takes him months if not years to put stuff out but the quality and not wanting to sacrifice his art for speed, makes it worthwhile.

Thank you for also including Monkey Wrench! I’ve been following the creator since the early 2000/2010s (back during one of the… idk what to call it. Animated fight tournament?) so I really hope more people will watch Zeurel’s series too!

I love all the indie shows getting spotlight.
I just hope that the big companies do take note of this and could learn from this.
Its so cool seeing all these creative people and it inspires me as an artist to keep drawing.
Hazbin Hotel is one of the shows that i think proved the big companies that it is possible to do anything. Hazbin Hotel to me was a very unique idea in their story.
I hope this made sense to you.
I'm an animation student (I'm graduating soon) from Chile. The current state of the animation industry worldwide is really depressing. Feels quite depressing spending 6 years of my life studying an art just to be replaced by AI. In Latin America animation isn't even being taken seriously at all by corporations and governments, so where I live I barely have any chance of success.
My only spark of hope now, is to work for an indie studio or a small team (which won't be easy cuz we'll have a lot of competition).
YO, I was wishing you to do a video something like this. Thanks man!
My farts are better than Saberspark’s farts 💨
Really, Indie stuff in general is nice. Animations, Games, and Comics too! So few corporations actually care about their fans, so a small Indie team allows fans to connect almost on a personal level.
FINALLY someone mentions Monkey Wrench. The others are great but MW is my fave by far.
What would you take?
Option 1: amazing and talented people trying to make their dreams and passion projects happen without the struggle of the corporate system
Option 2: corporate people who only care about how much money is in their wallet while also making streaming services to only have a majority of their shows last 2 seasons
Looks like Thomas the Tank engine is here, because I’m choosing Number 1!
I'm pretty sure Option 2 is still viable for some... Some as in the weirdos who like Mulan but hate Mushu, like Stitch but hate watercolor animation, etc.
While non-indie animation does tend to have more issues, I am glad that we have stuff like Invincible, X-Men 97, Blue Eyed Samurai,Cyberpunk Edge Runner, the Scott Pilgrim anime, etc, showing what animation even outside of indie is capable of.
I love the censorship in The Amazing Digital Circus because it's not just some silly words put in instead of swearing, or taking it out entirely (even cutting a scene), it just censors it in a funny way and takes from older ways of censorship when black bars were used to hide things and bleeps to cover the sound. It makes it so the audience knows what they would be saying without actually saying it.
What I like is that it's clearly a show that can appeal to kids too, but like a lot of older kids animation, it had a lof of "Crap Gets Past the Radar" moments that older audiences will find funny as well as doesn't beat around the bush when it comes to darker or deeper themes like existentialism or finding purpose.
I’m a minor trying to make my own animated series. I don’t have money, but I have friends who want to help me make this series possible! So we are all trying to make this series without money, which is possible, but it’s a lot of work. Don’t get me wrong, I really wish I could pay my friends, I just don’t have a job yet. I haven’t started animating it the series yet, just making all the scripts during the summer. Animation and voice acting process should be starting in late august if everything goes according to plan. I love indie animation, and I have so much passion for this project and desperately hope it works out! Thank you Saber for supporting all the indie animators out there. @@aninamated3984 Thanks! I really hope I can get my story out into the world!
I think a great way to see the contrast between Indie and Industry animation is just by the difference between Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. Now I love both shows, but with them we can see how a lot of times companies don’t give creators enough time to tell their stories, in the last couple years the standard episode count of an animated show went from 20ish to 8, just 8 so to the length of the average season is less than half of what they used to be. So Hazbin Hotel got that 8 episode at mente and I’ll say they used up every minute they had to tell their story but then you put that against Helluva Boss and all Indie projects who don’t have constraints on their episode count, so as long as their able to keep their audience engaged and tell a good story they can make their seasons as long as needed. I hate the 8 episodes for streaming norm, it’s destroying storytelling and people’s patience, people attention spans are getting shorter I can see it from comments people make about some of the shows I watch, but indie animation actually helps us to have patience and wait for the next episode, the months between now episodes (though a bit annoying) let us get together to theorize, built up hype, re watch the previous episodes and actually analyze them. With the fast paced shows of streaming a lot of times we just watch it all at once so a lot of hints and details get overlooked so rewatching each episode allows us to catch all the little details and characterization just though the lines the characters say.
Hopefully there's more episodes in season 2 sicne the show is so popular
FR
100% agree I wish they could go back to 20-26 episodes being the norm at least
@@HugeRMCFanBoY-bx3od I doubt they'll up the episode count. The reason the story feels so poorly paced in the first season is that the team weren't told they were getting a second season until post-production. They had to make a cohesive story with an ending. The executives didn't care that eight episodes wasn't enough time to do that effectively. However since the massive success of the show it's likely that we'll get more thought out seasons with room to grow moving forward.
I know that the industry hasn't been entirely making bad stuff recently (mainly with Universal [Puss in Boots 2, the Mario Movie, FNaF, Oppenheimer]), but at least it's great to see indies taking the spotlight and hope that some of the people in the industry eventually take notes from the indies and slip in more good stuff to balance out the bad stuff.
The Mario Movie ain't that bad though... I liked it. But then again, i'm a huge Nintendo nut.
oh yeah if you said that the industry hasn't do anything bad then what about the japanese industries and that comment that said: "Neglecting anime is what got us that horrible AI zombie movie and allowed grifting weebs to run rampant. The zombie movie that's set to release IN THEATRES is the result of this negligence of this one hypocritical mangaka who wrote Negima, who became a politician. You think that would be a good thing? WRONG. The Boy and The Dog was a warning shot knowing the strat was to anthromorphosize AI, and a tech demo to show what it can do. It's an affront to life itself."?!
In my honest opinion, especially after the success of The Fall Guy, Universal is the only studio that's doing good today (Except for Kung Fu Panda 4 and Ruby Gillian, but the Wild Robot might fix that).
and what do you mean?
“Murder drones sounds so violent, why not meta drones” umm I think that’s when they noticed that they had no idea why they were dealing with this after hearing that line, cause there’s a reason why it’s called “murder drones”, cause there are literal killer robots

Yeah recently a trailer for a indie project like Dungeon flippers came up. Then the first episode of an indie animation called Celine and Cheswick.
It makes me so happy to know that indie animation is ruling the entertainment industry and thriving with the creative freedom to do your own work without any restrictions from a big time Hollywood studio.
not me being the single worker on my gamecade series (except for music, backgrounds, and sound design)
Wow that's interesting, how's the progress going
I knew I recognized your profile picture lol, nice to see ya here. Love your art/animations :)
True. Many projects do deserve so much more attention, including Gamercade. And hey, even just your small little skit animations are amazing, hillarous, and so unique stylistically! You're really a force to be reckoned with in your own right on the animation scene.
Make sure you're hydrating, getting plenty of rest, and adding some variety to your girl dinner so you stay healthy. I appreciate your efforts and keeping me and others entertained and look forward to supporting you as I'm able to. ' w'
I love your work so much!
Big Studios are heavilly moderated to the point that they don't had Creativity freedom left.
670 WHAT?! That is illegal! Minimum wages are set to accommodate the cheapest living spaces. As far as I know, you need $1,000 a month or more to live ANY FREAKING WHERE IN AMERICA less you stay with family or friends. That is a literal requirement for surviving on you're own!
The best thing about Indie Animation is that anyone can become a creator. All you need is passion and patience to craft a story. You don't even have to be a story writer there's a bunch of things to do in the Indie Industry!
If anyone out there has dreams of making an animated series (there's a lot of us out there, I know it!), please pay attention to your limitations and focus on building an audience. I have spent many years trying to get an idea off the ground and it's finally starting to bear fruit, but save yourself the stress and lack of direction and plan things out.

The whiplash of seeing Saber talk about Undertale and showing clips of FNAF and Pokémon is crazy
EDIT, wanted to talk about this:
With the deadlines and such, Scarlet and Violet is a fantastic example of a game tainted by the deadlines.
Its story is great, probably one of the best games I’ve played- but.. It was a glitchy mess with low frame rates which grew annoying after a while. It could’ve been amazing, it could be one of the best games, if not for the harsh deadlines.

The main problem i see in the "indie" scene is that there's too much trying to replicate not only TV pipelines but also budgets and visual fidelity. I think creators should take feasibility into account when coming up with a style for a project. There are TONS of creative ways to save time and therefore money (cut-outs, live action elements, photos as backgrounds, limited animation, etc.). In some sense, Hazbin and all this stuff has kinda set a dangerous precedent of what is perceived as "indie". It is kinda telling that not so long ago, when there were more technological restrictions, there was also more output (e.g. Newgrounds). But nevertheless, i wish every project all the best.
I would love to see youtubers cover individual indie projects, not only it would help spotlight said projects, but it would also give some of us something to check out that would probably go unnoticed otherwise
I personally don't think the mega-corpses will ever admit they are starting to be beat by a bunch of individuals and smaller studios since that would mean the executives would have to admit they are making wrong decisions.
And being wrong means a smaller golden parachute when the boat sinks.
There needs to be more attention on monkey wrench nowadays, it totally deserves it.
The problem with corporate animation is these are out of touch greedy studios run by business men who only see animation/video games as a product, not art
I mean this just business 101
That is true but the problem is how companies screw over their animators and game devs and rush out things just to make a quick buck
The hazbin hotel and Lacksdaisy pilots are the two best pilots to remind people what made people love the animation in Disney renaissance movies and cartoons and 2000’s cartoons in general. Plus the writing and some visual gags from clever and passionate writers.🥰
I AM SOOOO HAPPY U TALKED ABOUT OLAN'S STORY AND FINAL SPACE!! Final space means a great deal to me, it literally saved me in 2021, and when it was cancelled we were all so fucking devastated. Olan's story is so important for everyone to hear and why execs fuckin suuuuck♡♡
This at least gives me confidence and hope, after hearing all of the horror stories of greedy execs cutting animated shows and movies for a cheap buck, laying off animators, etc, that the spirit of creativity will thrive in the indie space. It does have hurtles to overcome, sure, but fighting those challenges head on is worth preserving artistic integrity, and telling great stories. I have no doubt that indie animation has a bright future, and will do everything I have to support it.
Dude!! MONKEY WRENCH!!! I admit have not watched the vid yet but seeing that particular animation on the thumbnail makes me so happy. Iv been hopeing Saberspark would mention them at some point. The words gotta get out! I know there prob others I have not seen that are even less acknowledged that's why I try to watch and suport the ones I come across. But idk there something personally super special about Monkey Wrench cant quiet but my finger on it but whoooo! 🎉
the problem is when basically it becomes oversaturated. because basically it seems some indie animations seem to ride the coat tails of other popular indie animations
This, It seems like we’re getting a lot of repeats, especially with the whole hell setting with demon characters. The amount of indie animations we hear about is the tiniest bit of all the failed indie shows that exist.
To paraphrase Syndrome: when everybody is indie, no one is.
@@BigK13372 yep
this happens in the industry all the time really, its jot just an indie scene problem
Hey Saber! Since you already touched the Spanish side of animation, I'd like you to speak about this indie project called "Destripando la Historia". It's a series of music videos about history, fairytales and ancient gods! It has a big fandom and even the guitarist of DragonForce talked about it because every song references popular music... Just to know 👀
The warnings there go for any type of production, not just animation. Next month, a Kickstarter-funded pilot reel for a live-action movie is supposed to get released, with the hopes of securing sponsors and distributors. The IP in question for this pilot is Getter Robo, an IP with no less than six cartoon series, a dozen manga, and lots of assorted merchandise between it. But the system is such that they needed to make a test pilot to sell sponsors on the idea.
Oh, the execs are also the sickos. I knew there was something off with that Final Space scene.
So glad that Saberspark mentioned Monkey Wrench and yeah that masterpiece is so underrated, need more attention. They're still doing the 4th eps. Maybe in some other time Saberspark need to review it.
Tbh not just animation, but the indie entertainment scene has really been crazy good too. Things like dropout rising from CollegeHumor’s ashes with amazing shows, or Starkid raising almost 530k for their next musical (Cinderella’s castle, it’s going to have some CRAZY puppets). It’s all been great to see things people are passionate about keep going and make amazing content.
Anyone remember the pilot of Constant Payne and why Nick didn't want to greenlight it?
Independent animation is needed the same way Don Bluth animation helped challenge Disney’s animation in the 1980s. Because animation needs to have more creative freedom, especially when Disney bought Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 20th Century Fox, and the animation industry took a severe blow because there was far less competition. The animation industry in Hollywood has stagnated, even rivals like Warner Bros, Dreamworks, Sony Pictures Animation aren’t making much original animated movies.
I always thought DreamWorks should start making PG-13 animated movies that take darker and relatable routes for the audience.
@@jasimawwad9612 if they make PG-13 animated movies, they have to be like the live action PG movies from the 1980s.
I LOVE MONKEY WRENCH more ppl need to support it really
I stg the animation industry is on the verge going on strike with everything going on. I think the only reason they haven't is because their current contract hasn't exspired yet. I'm just hoping they get as much support as the writers and actors did when they went on strike. Every animation fan has heard the horror stories that big studio animators and vfx artists have to go through. They deserve to be treated better.
Indie animation truly gave it their all!
18:15 EDDSWORLD MENTION!! GOD THIS BROUGHT ME BACK
Edd Gould was a pioneer 🎉
My girlfriend had a pet blue heeler. She loves Bluey the show. We have not watched it together, but I would love to watch it with her.😊
Corporate Greed is the caused of animation grief and I hope Indie Animation saving the problematic issues especially layoffs, production issues especially big shots like David Z becoming a bad guy. I hope animation can be saved with good style by you cartoonists everywhere to help us seeing great animation again like from the 1980s and the 1990s. Great vid as usual, Saberspark.
I’ve never clicked on a Saberspark video this fast

Why are there so many dang bots on every single comment jeeez
I just wanna read the real human replies 😭😭😭
Ikr, im sick of them. I'm reporting all of them :/
And UA-cam still hasn't made a mass report option :(
@@KoopaKontroller The bots are from corporate bootlickers and grifters like Asmongold and Nerdtronic, who has made a career complaining about trivial things while letting these issues of industrial corruption fester. They are threatened when the views are taken away by something that feels more genuine, not made for the bottom line. HBomberguy's Plagiarism and You(Tube) is a testament and shows just how dire the situation in the corporate world is.
I got jumpscared seeing LADS show up near the end. I was genuinely not expecting that haha. I'm glad to see it be included in an indie animation discussion. It was also great to see Monkey Wrench get so much love. I'm an animator for it and the overall vibe of the team is one of pure passion and excitement. The show really is a figurehead for everything great about indie animation.
That's a lot of work to become an independent animator and to every studio and other projects that they're working so hard on because of the budget.
You can tell people in Indie animation actually give a damn about their work, because animation is not an easy thing to create. So I'm always gonna be behind it, as someone is looking to break into it myself.
The Hazbin Hotel Felt souless (ironicaly) when it released. I wish they could have stayed indie and kept the better voiceacting, Instead of imitation Union actors.
I'm excited for this era since it finally puts spotlight on things that people WANT
I always wanted to be an animator in my youth. But then I saw an episode of Tiny Toones that made fun of the gruling conditions of the job. Buster is literally banging a drum like he's on a slave rowing ship screaming "Faster! Cheaper!". One of the other toons walks up to him like Tiny Tim in Christmas Carol pleading for more money. Buster screams "More money!?" and viciously attacks him.
I gave away all my art books to the local library and never considered the career again. Because here's the thing. It's only funny if there's sn underlining truth to it.
At this rate, Adult Animations like Animan Studios prove that, despite the graphic nature. They know their finding success via new forms of audience.
Wait.. what 🤨
What about Fox in Space?
The biggest thing that Indie animation has gong for it is that it has the freedom to be it's own thing; there is no need for product placement, demographic focus, run time or appeasing corporate overlords.
And as such there is a real appeal for this because we get to see things like helluvaboss or digital circus or Glitchtale where real honest to god passion can found and not just what is merely marketable.
The biggest tragedy in terms of indie animation is Richard Williams. He was an award-winning and respected animator. When he was alive, he was considered the best in the world. Yet, his pet project spent decades of personal funding and when he got it picked up by a studio to finish it, they dropped him and did it on their own. Only recently has "The Thief and the Cobbler" been restored to William's vision posthumously.
he kinda was toxic to his own staff though...
Support indies!
Watch their animations, play their games, leave comments, and maybe buy them a coffee!
Same with games, indie games are the lifeblood of having actual games to play.
Cant wait to see the amazing stuff the indie scene will pump out in the next years, just like what happended to the game industry
My farts are better than Saberfart’s farts 💨
