I think I've seen every Dann interview and heard every podcast, and this is one of the most compelling conversations. I would read his memoir if he ever published one, so many great stories. Thanks for a great interview!
I can't even tell you all how honored I was to be able to sing Time To Burn with Dann and his son on the night he mentions. Not only an amazing musician, insanely great guitar player, incredible producer, writer and arranger, but just a wonderful person. Allowed me to fan boy on him in the green room before we performed together. Absolute class act.
Zak you are absolutely killing it with these interviews! All of the Nashville guys I want to hear from…..to hear their stories, recording methods, making music live on stage and in the studio. Fascinating stuff. And I love the way you just jump in and start talking to them and you are off and running. No fluff or a long list of credits. If we want that we can look it up ourselves. Most of these guys don’t need an introduction-Brad Paisley, Guthrie Trapp, and now Dann. If you don’t know who they are you should, especially if you love guitar. Keep these coming Zak, they are pure gold!
I saw the Vertex interview and exposed me to Dann's playing on Boz Scaggs Other Roads record with Luke. Hands down, that is a great jem to hear both of the pros play. I just finished watching Danns Full Instructional Video on TY and its the 9 min mark where he shows the opening lick for Time to Burn where he breaks it down on how to play it. This is great interview for sure. My take away is this: Dann gets hired not just for his skills, but for his genuine character. Humble, compassionate and practical. He's got a great spirit about him that is encouraging and uplifting. Dann, thanks for sharing about your family. Praying for your sons healing so he can play with you again. :)
You should write a book on how an interview is done! THIS is it. The perfect blend of question, never stepped on Dann's toes, really made this pure gold. I am a drummer of 40 years and a die hard Lukather and Huff fan. I can tell, you feel the same way about Dann as I do. The guy is a virtual God in the world of music. He and Lukather are a part of nearly every album I have ever owned. And they both are huge reasons that the music of the 80's and 90's was so great! One thing I wanted to mention..at around the 52 minute mark of this interview, you bring up Dann's singing voice on the Giant albums. I am so glad you did.. he is humble about it, but man... he sounds absolutely incredible on those records! What a talent!
