Nice! Shakespeare touches on interesting concepts that are always going to be relevant. Granted, sometimes in a very theatrical way (as is the nature of all stories)... but in any case, there's no doubt that Hamlet is fun and interesting on many levels!!

If I am not mistaken, it was only the personal possessions (land) of the kings, which were wagered and not the entire kingdoms.

How is synedoche used is act 1 scene 1? You guys explained what it is but I was just wondering how it was actually used and where this can be seen in the language? Thanks guys.

In line 101, Horatio says, "But to recover of us, by strong hand," referring to hands of the military force that Fortinbras has raised. Of course the army is composed of fighters and these fighters quite literally do fight with their hands, but their hands are actually just a part of their body, representing the whole of them!

@@meg.inthepages Although not all of our stuff is for free, we have more free lessons on our site compared to what we have on UA-cam. I'll definitely relay your message to our whole team. There's actually a ton of work that goes into each of these summaries/analyses that people usually skip out on! And if you want, check out Nerdstudy.com for more videos!
Good luck with the studying and don't forget to really enjoy the play while you learn!

Just a thought. Can the synecdoche in this scene also be how Horatio believes the deceased king's ghost to bode strange eruptions for the state. The way he's using the apparition's distressed demeanor/countenance to represent the probable fate of an entire kingdom.
A part to represent the whole?

I searched this and apparently King Hamlet uses the word "ear", refering to the whole ear of Denmark, when talking about being poisoned.

    "Horatio:
A little ere the mightiest Julius fell...
    ...
As stars with trains of fire and dews of blood,
Disasters in the sun; and the moist star
Upon whose influence Neptune's empire stands
Was sick almost to doomsday with eclipse:
And even the like precurse of fierce events,
As harbingers preceding still the fates
    ..."
I'm having trouble understanding this analogy. Whom does Neptune's empire refer to?
