  • "If you gaze deep into a cat's eyes, you can see the world of spirits." - old English proverb
There's no doubt to people who love cats there's a connection with them unlike any other kind. When a mom came to adopt two kittens with her three kids -- all of whom have Autistic Spectrum Disorder--I wondered how the unique qualities of cat personality could"speak" to a child who has trouble connecting to the outside world. In this video, I visit Callie and her wonderful kids to see how the kittens have made positive changes to the family's life.

I didn't get diagnosed with ASD until my late 30s, but I've always had a _deep_ connection to cats my whole life. I just innately seem to understand them.
My two girls like to be near me most of the time anyway, but if my PTSD is acting up or I'm going through autistic burnout, my cats will stay right by my side until they know I'm doing better - even if it takes a couple days. In return, I always give them their space when they're feeling more introverted and want to sneak off to their hiding place - even if it takes a couple days.
Cats are ALL ABOUT mutual respect , boundaries, and _earning_ trust. I've always been lucky enough to have very empathetic cats who can sense when I need company or affection. ...but it's not all luck. Most cats have a deep capacity for love and empathy if they feel safe and respected enough to show it. ..and this even applies to large predator cats as well.

Hi there Humility, thanks so much for the comment. That is amazing that you trained your cat to recognize a potential meltdown. I'm interested, what does your cat do when he/she feels one coming on? I bet your technique could help so many other people. Cats are incredibly perceptive to moods and I can see how they would be able to do this. You mentioned that it is hard to train cats and YES, it is...they take longer to train than dogs and require a lot of patience. Also, some cats are eager to be trained and others want nothing to do with it. So finding that special cat who is eager to please and curious about interactions with people is the key. It sounds like your cat is that way. Please let me know more about your fascinating kitty! **Caroline

This is awesome Caroline. For cats to turn a restless/sleepless child into one who calms down and sleeps. Love all the kitties especially the tuxedos. Too cute.

I'm a 51 yr old lady that loves special needs cats. Every one of my former cats had special needs. I helps me know that I have a responsibility for a life besides my own. I spent 23 yrs in mental installation. The cats make me feel worthy as I learn n get closer to Jesus. God is good all the time. I thank Him daily for my babies. I only have Noah now. He has broken back n organ damage n needs special care. God bless

As soon as my Parents came home with my Cat Norman I instantly knew we were going to be best friends
Me and Norman are inseparable, every time when I have one of my "Rain clouds" (upset moods) He's there right beside me and calms me down. He follows me Everywhere I go, And when it's Bedtime he Lays down on my chest and kneads me before going to sleep

Some cats just don't like to be picked up! I always tell people who really want a "lap cat" to adopt an older cat who has already shown this tendency. With kittens you don't know how they will turn out. Good luck finding your cuddle cat!
