- Without a doubt L.A. Reid has one of the most storied careers in music. Working with the likes of Outkast, Maria Carey, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Tony Braxton and so many more, Reid recently stopped by Sway in the Morning to speak on his new book “Sing To Me.”
From his time at LaFace Records to later merging with and taking over Arista Records, Reid outlines the success of Outkast and their ability to break the mold on traditional hip-hop. With the bubbling talent of Atlanta at his fingertips, Reid also helped mold the careers of Usher and Pink as they began their incredibly successful careers.
With so much history in the business and so little time to run through it all, Sway asks Reid a series of questions in which he drops gems and tells unheard stories. Talking to Kanye before the release of “808s & Heartbreak,” Reid recalls telling Ye that this would be his most important album.
Having had worked with artists before the boom of social media, Reid breaks down the cons to overexposure on social platforms. Citing Adele as an example, he believes that keeping a certain level of secrecy is important to let the music tell the story of the person.
With his career still going strong, Reid rattles of Yo Gotti, Travis Scott and Future as artists he is keeping his eye on. Ending the interview on a light note, Reid recalls the time he and Diddy chartered a boat which turned into the biggest party of his life. I'm grateful that I'm old enough that I can appreciate what a legend this guy is. This is major. Some people just came in on the whole Bobby Shmurda part of his career. So I understand thats a big concern for the right now people. But those who's life moments that were backed by the soundtrack produced by this guy know and get what I'm saying. We lived something special that will never happen again that way

@@kazardancing me too. I just recently heard Reid say in the Questlove podcast that when he stopped playing on drum kits he got deep into drum machines, and he felt like he could compete with Teddy Riley or anybody that was out.😄

L.A. Reid ran Arista Records from 2000 to 2004 when he got fired after the release of Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below record. After that, Arista was folded with Jive. Did you know that Clive Davis was fired from Arista before Reid stepped up as a new CEO??

The Babyface/LA thing was so powerful in the late 80s/early to mid 90s....a very pioneering force. Fans can always recognize that sound that came from great writing and production (Babyface's "Tender Lover" album, his duet with Pebbles, even some of Pebbles solo work (her ballads from 2nd album REALLY have that Tender Lover sound). I just hope that all involved are getting the royalties and $$$ they deserve. How many uploads are there on UA-cam of "Love Makes Things Happen"? I would venture to guess some people are making money off of it that shouldn't be. Someone should look into it.
