As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
Only issue that I have are the cables which are visible through the acrylic. If you made a hole in the dowel you could use that as a channel for those cables or just wrap the strip around the cables. Cool use of USB cables. Probably one note here would be - make sure they are good quality, especially if you're planning on making more lights - the data cables (usually green and white) can be quite thinner than the power and ground ones so they may not be great for larger current. I build a similar project with large Ikea standing lamp but I'm using Wifi (and recently HomeKit) to control it. Even thought about making a video about it :) And when using micro controller there's also a possibility to use neopixels and make cool animations, something I have planned for one of my next projects.
The LEDs in those strips are connected in parallel, so you don't actually have to connect cables on the other end of the strip. You can just split the incoming wires into two; one to the strip and one to the daisy-chain connector. As for cables, I've found old telephone cables and RJ11 connectors to be pretty neat for these kinds of projects. They're also dirt cheap 😃
To control the lights I would use an Arduino controller. It takes a little bit of programming, but there are a lot of people that have already done the programming for you. You just simply input the program into the Arduino controller and it's good to go. Nice project.
Very cool project. Design is SO often a problem in DIY projects. It's as if saving money is the only reason some people think justifies making something yourself. I like that you do an artistic job, even if it's for a so-called utilitarian project. KEEP IT UP, it's great!
You prolly dont care but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid forgot my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me.
@Kamryn Tony Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@04:12 You use regular USB connectors for powering the LED Light strips. When I will be building this project I will use a different type of connector. Because of the RGB, you have power on D+ and D- leads of the connector too, and this is outside of the USB specification. I would warn the users, do not plug regular USB devices into those connectors on the cubes, to avoid problems.
This might make a neat nightlight in a nursery! When my son was small, he had a white Teddy Bear that had LEDs inside it, when you squeezed the paw, it would cycle thru the colors (it was as soft glow). He would fall to sleep a light easier with it. I think it was called a Glo-Bear.
Glad to see the smile and the passion continue even through the tough times.. Keep up the great creative work. I love they way you document and show how to build these fantastic projects. Would you ever consider using reclaimed material for your projects? Re-purposing old items and using the material for a build?
Really beautiful work, Linn! A tip I just discovered watching drone video buildings: try to find some silicone wire. The difference from usual wire and silicone wire is that the silicone is that the isolation won't melt with the heat from the soldering iron! I'm already looking for some of those. :)
Excellent work. Keep it up.. I also can make different shapes of objects but I don’t have much knowledge of connecting the electrical system. Can you explain slowly how you connect all wires, bulbs, USB port and etc. Thanks for your useful videos. Congratulations..
Awesome! Another project I am going to try! I have lots of mahogany I got out of a dumpster at work when they remodeled and this is a great project to give a try!
Great project, keep it up. Just a few notes: perhaps one could use Super Glue in gel form? I would connect the second USB plug to the first USB plug where the power comes in and not at the end of the led strip, due to voltage drop... especially if one connects more of these in series... just my 5 cents. I hope you don’t mind,
Hello, about how you connected the controller to USB and the LED strip to USB, did you follow any guidelines on how to connect the wires? Could you share that please, if you have it? Thanks!
I like that Linn. Well made. 👍🏼😊 Just a thought, as you were cutting the acrylic 4x4 you noticed it rising up which could kick back...use a pencil with its eraser to hold it down, hate for you do get hurt. 😢👍🏼
Very cool! I wanna attempt this soon with thinner wood (maybe 3-4 different species) and frost the acrylic. Probably use a simpler light...I'm a drummer, me and electricity don't understand each other lol. Very cool project indeed! :)
If you aim a heat gun at the circle in the acrylic you can make it clear again. I want an Xcarve so badly. I have the router and the rest of the tools but just can't justify the price for a couple of rails and a board.
Hello Linn, Why did you souder the led controller on the cable. I’m asking that because I would had install the led controller inside the lamp. P.S. Sorry if my English is bad.
Because there was only one controller which lamp to install it into? It made more sense to make the cable than to have to remember which lamp it was in.
May i ask if anyone knows about LED strips here? Is there a difference in a 12v RGB or single color LED strip and a 5v RGB or single color LED strip? Also a silly question, i dont think a 5v power supply would work on a 12v LED strip right?

Really creates atmosphere and doesn't look cheap like a lot led lights I have seen. Nice job!
Loved the design! Also liked the idea that the hole saw marks on the acrylic work prety well as a diffuser!
Love the looks of these lights. I never would have guessed how they were put together. Thanks for sharing.

You're a really awesome woman. I admire you so much, please continue doing this, your videos inspire me to build things too. Thanks a lot.
I like how you have drawings to go along with the project. Good work here 👍

Darbin + LEDs? Made my day!! Wood and acrylic just works so well together, don't you think?

@Kamryn Tony It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my account :D
@Archer Chance Glad I could help :D
Great Project and Great Explanation

This would make an awesome gift idea. Definitely on my list of things to try.

I need to try this project! Very cool!
I will definitely buy this light blocks from you because I don't have the skills or the tools to make such wonderful pieces.
Beautiful, love it, so cool, great job, well done and thank you for sharing.
Good work.
These look awesome! Good job!
I love these! Looks awesome.
Very nice she is very creative and smart girl thanks for sharing your ideas 😋😘
Good work
Well done. The result looks pretty nice. Thank you for sharing.
did you have to polish the acrylic to make up for the saw marks?
Wow, Lynn! Those came out pretty amazing! I love it!
J adore le mélange bois acrylique c est super beau
Bravo Line
Awesome!
Great Design
Prety simple pretty project!
Wonderful
Very cool
They are beautiful lights.
Cool cubes
Would also make blue tooth speakers too but thats my thinking
Looks really cool; instead of gluing, I would have screwed the bottom piece into the acrylic so that you have access if the led's ever fail.
Nice project. Your lovely assistant (Matt) is doing a great job. (: >
Very Nice!!!
I was hoping for something related to pvc pipes..!! Although really beautiful creation..😘👏👏
looks great! congrats!

I love it!!! looks like my vu meter tower. cheers
Proyectos LED Ste man, ligando 100% pillado :v.
no one cares
sikkkkkkkk
Cool girl u got some talent 👍😊
I like the way you used a standard micro USB cable as the link between the cubes.. ☺
looks great
Superb work how is cost
What a wonderful act i love it
This is great!

Oops....should have said .... really, really SUPER GREAT build!
Kayinfso Here i
If you mix the epoxy in a zip seal bag you can snip the corner off and use it like an icing bag to apply the epoxy easier.
Good tip!
Should Portable Electric Circular Saws Be Guarded?
Muito legal
Very nice
You might want to try using a hair dryer or heat gun when working with heat shrink tubing. Its better than using a lighter.
Great project linn - what grit did you sand the acrylic up to?
Not bad, looks good.
Great design and video. : )
Very Nice
Great job. Thanks.

How about using the acrylic offcut centres for another taller round lamp just drill out the middle again - less waste ))
Great! Which is the model of the cnc machine, and where is buy? Thanks!
You're amazing please keep up the amazing work!!
v2 should have removable bottom piece. for inspection and repairing the electronics. nice build tho
Very nice 🤗
Very attractive.
Nice !!!!
hi what is the model of your CNC machine ?
Darbin, Very well done. I'm going to make some of these myself. Love your projects. :)
Love it. Whats your opinion to my version?
Hi Darbin I like that little meter you have at 7:27 what is the proper name for this device i would like to search for it.
It's called a USB power meter tester. I've added links in the description.
@@darbinorvar Thank-You Darbin Nice video and great project I enjoyed watching.
why did you not just cut the holes with your cnc? (nice project)
Nice
Great job Lynn
You always come up with awesome and easy projects.
Thanks
P. S. What is the model of your CNC, if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks, I use the xcarve.
