The best way to prevent over feeding a single tank when you enjoy watching the shrimp eat, is to have multiple shrimp tanks and feed them at different times of day. There is always a tank that can be fed when you want to watch the little guys run around and eat.
I have taken to writing the date on my tank with a wet erase paint marker when I clean the sponge filters, that way the last date is staring me in the face and I know when I really should clean them again.
I got into the hobby 7yrs ago and struggled to find info on cherry shrimp. You have taught me so much since you been posting videos. I'm a subscriber and love your content. Very helpful and informative, keep up the good work!

Seems trumpets are investable without poison lol but it's a shrimp tank so they are good in moderation lol
Thanks for taking the time to share the feedback. In my experience, no Ramshorns do not eat detritus worms. I am however currently experimenting with Assassin Snails 👍🏻
Love your videos, I'm new at Shrimp. I have a five gallon very heavily planted Fluval Spec tank. I have 3 dwarf red platies and 3 Ottos and I plan on adding Blue Dreams. I now do a small water change weekly. Should I continue this when I get the shrimp? I want to keep the water good for both shrimp and fish. Thank you.
What kind filtration do you have? How much movement of your water is there? I have a 15gal AquaJapan AOI tank and I worried that my water flow is too fast? Is that even a thing?
I started with 20 red cherry(tap water) , gh 6 kh 1 ph 6.5 temp is 79-80fahreneits, and I have around 100+ in a 2 month period LOL! and I do feed daily and have Java moss , duckweed and a sponge filter, 10% water change only if my nitrates go up , thats it
I found baby shrimp recently but I’m worried that they’re getting picked off by the fish in the tank (Green neon tetra and Chili Rasbora) and I would appreciate some tips for increasing the survival rate (I’m in the process of obtaining Java moss) and I’m also considering getting a hatchery breeder net that sits inside the tank with a 1mm grid size, don’t know if the babies can fit through it or if it’ll just not work out.
Unfortunately, ANY fish will eat baby shrimp given the chance. Java moss will certainly help as will large piles of rocks. At the end of the day, when you keep fish and shrimp together, it is a numbers game. Over time, providing you breed more shrimp than the fish eat, the colony will grow. This is essentially what happens in the wild.
Can I please ask the type of shrimp at the 2:00 mark? It looks more "solid" in both body and colour than a regular run-of-the-mill cherry shrimp, so is it a Bloody Mary or a Fire Red? Maybe when showing "B" roll, could you put the name of the type of shrimp in case some viewers want to get some eg the ones with clear centres at the 3:12 mark. Love the videos and have subscribed 👍
I have 7 shrimp tanks all neocaridinas, maybe once week ill have a death shrimp with what seems like the ring of death. I maybe have combined 300 shrimp total. Is this normal to happen when you have a lot or does my GH 10 / KH 6 not good enough for them to molt ? Thanks mate!
Hi. When you have a large colony, you will always get the occasional death. The more shrimp in a given tank, the less calcium is available per individual in that tank. If I lost one shrimp a week out of 300, I would not worry at all. That’s a die off rate of 0.3%. I reckon you are doing pretty well 👍🏻
@@FishKeepingAnswers added shrimp to tank today 🤗 just to say thanks to you and all your helpful uploads and the handbook of course I'll hopefully have a colony soon M
What about water parameters that we don’t or can’t measure and their impact on the shrimp? Might it be helpful to change water regularly to correct for these unmeasured parameters( perhaps hormone levels as one example)?
Possibly right, but then we are weighing up things we don’t know and don’t/can’t measure versus real world experience of shrimp keepers on platforms like UA-cam who are literally saying ‘I stopped doing water changes and my shrimp colony improved!’ At the end of the day I genuinely believe, if it is working for you, stick with it. 🫶🏻
Guys ive never had an issue of white alge on my tanks but it is starting to affect me i know its not bad but it makes my tank look foggy how do i get rid of it? Its a 5 gallon glass cube tank i usually have big tanks ans never had it b4
Would a dwarf cori be a good compromise in tanks big enough? They don’t bother shrimp, wouldn’t really contribute much to the bio load, and they’d make quick work of the worms. If the shrimp are spawning in the moss, would that keep the fry out of reach of the cori? (I know you don’t have them now, but I’m also asking for myself as I’m planning my shrimp tank lol)
@@FishKeepingAnswers do they fuss with eggs or fry? I know you usually just keep shrimp only for breeding, but if a Cory won’t interfere with breeding I’m definitely going to use them
Please follow the channel's advice but don't get just one, or even 2 Corydoras. They're all fish that need to be kept in groups. The more the merrier and you can have a group of 6 pygmy Corys in even a 5g tank if it's just them and shrimp and snails. And dwarf Corys shouldn't affect your shrimp breeding. If anything, the shrimp will help the Corys breeding. I have Celestial Pearl Danios in a colony breeding tank with snowball shrimp and the shrimp tend to and clean the fish eggs!
i admit that i wash my intake sponges on my hob filters with tap water. yes, it kills the biofilter function, but i've got *so many* nooks and crannies and plants and the internals of the filter to all support the beneficial bacteria cultures i'm not too worried about it. but if that's someone's primary biofiltration they definitely shouldn't do that.
No need to be confused 😂. In this video I said changing water purely out of habit was bad, however testing and changing water when required is good. In my latest video I say I have stopped changing water, but clearly if I tested the water and saw a problem (which I haven’t) I’d still carry out a water change. Hope that helps 🤜🏻
I accidentally left a giant tape worm in my shrimp tank and now I can find it how do I rid the fish of tape worms without hurting my shrimps. Please help
As far as advice goes I'd say is be careful in how much water you use when making a change. Or at least make sure you're able to be gradual in refills too.
I like your content mate! You talked about feeding to much, you do that on a breeding tank. Does that benifit the spawning rate? Or just for the baby’s to get enough food. Do you like bare bottom tanks with shimp? From a healthy water perspective, breeding tank
Hi. When I want to really boost a colony, such as when breeding to sell, I really increase the amount of food, especially high protein food such as frozen bloodworms. I never go bare bottom. I usually just use gravel or sand 👍🏻
I use a retractible razor to cut algae wafers into small bits, or more powdery if I want to feed my microlife. I dont see how my 2-5 adult shrimps could eat a whole wafer
Aquarium tips: 1. Place the fish tank with the open end up 2. Put water in the tank 3. Feed the fish 4. Do not eat the fish tank 5. Cycling the fish tank does not involve a bicycle
Detritus worms themselves are not bad. In fact they make up part of a healthy ecosystem. However, in a shrimp only tank where there are no predators to keep the number of worms in check, they can run rampant and eventually out compete the shrimp for food 😞
I don't have any of those bad habits, or any of the good ones either, but still I have no shrimp. I'm thinking that it might be time to add some water and some shrimp to the tank for the first time to see how that goes. Somehow, none of that seems to want to show up by magic.
I would say you should handle them as little as possible. Moving them between tanks as and when required is fine. Getting them out for a cuddle everyday might be a bit much 🤔

How can anyone who has been in this hobby for more than a minute say don't do a water change if your tests are ok? Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate are not the only things that matter. You've never heard of Old Tank Syndrome?
I have been quite guilty for the exact same crimes 🪑 Again and again, OVER feeding the aquarium and moving pieces of the aquatic puzzles ...Just a little bit of a shitshow and the rest is the way I feel when I get the weekend water changes and I am sure that the average person is interested in bringing freshwater to prevent the problem beforehand from getting the fish sick ? Haven't seen the negative effects from a weekend WC. I have many times observed the fish become more energetic and the neons will start schooling, Hatchets are less likely to defend their territories etc. The only problem is the amounts that are removed and the other point is the way I return the water is very slow flow using a little Sicce pump !!! Every system is different and observation is right in line with the testing
