I started flying when, as a teenager, I listened for the first time to the great composers in the history of music. But I only reached the stratosphere with the composers of the 20th century. And now, 67 years old, with Arvo Part I am already at the limits of the solar system.
My sweet wife of 38 years passed on Feb. 8, 2018. This elegy is for you my dear Nancy. Your loving husband, Fred, Gotha
, Florida.
🙏
Must be the greatest composer of our age (that I know of). Found him by accident. Thank God for youtube!!!
what do you think of Max Richter?
+nickj3ds He's a nice man.
+jaycee bettelsheim I'd like to know what you think of his music though.
Very beautiful!
+shelley isom Aarvo Pärt and Karl Jenkins really moves my soul...
I absolutely love this composer 🙏❤
My mom and I love this composer. We are obsessed with him and his music. My violin teacher played fratres and, once she introduced me to him, boy oh boy, we downloaded many of his compositions.
Thank you Mr. Part!!
Possibly my favorite work by Pärt--what a genius!
This speaks directly to my soul!
"Arvo Pärt’s glorious new Fourth Symphony is subtitled “Los Angeles” for a couple of reasons. The first is that it was commissioned in part by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The second is a little more complex (...) Arvo had been toying with the idea of texts relating to the concept of guardian angels. With the commission from a city whose name literally means City of the Angels, the Orthodox text Pärt chose became “Canon of the Guardian Angel.”
I love the harmonies and sonority's that Arvo imbues into his scores; also the feelings of depth in the strings to me is deeply profound and spiritual. His music is an experience for the listener, unlike lighter music; one has to really listen carefully to discover the sheer beauty of his music.
Keith Terrett Then, you may also like music by Peteris Vasks, a latvian composer (e.g. "Voices", a symphony for strings), of by Tristan Murail, a French composer (e.g. "Le Lac") as they are also based on the same diaphanous aesthetics.... Enjoy !
Thanks for the tips
I couldn't stop listening
This is a jewel. 4:52am, full winter this side of the rock. Im delighted.
This is just absolutely beautiful..
Very awesome piece. It reminds me of the time I was chillin with my peeps smoking a flat spliff on the east side LA baby. :)
+Stephen Goodall I love that someone said this about Arvo Part's music :'D
+Stephen Goodall Oh, droll, oh so drool.....I want some!!!!!!Thanks for saying that, really I am not being sarcastic.....
upvote for "fat spliff" reference.
What? East LA is predominantly Mexican immigrant neighborhood.
Here on this planet we have too much pain and sorrow....Arvo Part expresses these emotions so clearly.
NOW thats what i call a masterpiece....Absolute splendor...
Good old Arvo. I didn(t know this one yet, and yet again it makes me break down in tears.
I can feel each nerve in my body being pulled - this is the first time I have heard this one as well. I am having a hard time keeping my composure.
DiechmoVericon You got the shits, dude?
Well, first of all, I am no where close to being a 'dude', so picture me as a hot redheaded female, which I am, and since I do appreciate humor (which you didn't really pull off too well) I would have grinned every so slightly had you replied "You in the middle of a mind blowing orgasm or something?" (which would involve every nerve in my body and my impending lack of composure) but alas, you went straight to the other side and chose a 'poo' comment. No, no shits. That only happens to me when I am forced to listen to country music.
DiechmoVericon Whoa, easy with the life story, dude. Jeez.

Come on. You know you busted out the popcorn.

Thanks!
you forgot 39:10 sound of heavy rain for over 4 minutes
The first 7 minutes... they way they make me feel it's just surreal. Arvo Part, what a genius
I love Arvo Part's music
This is a FANTASTIC work for orchestra!
sounds from heaven
Fantastique ! J'adore...
This is SUCH a treasure, thank you.
Celestial music. Thank you for sharing!
Sublime: Amazing Music Great Composing.
Found on UTube. Thanks again UTube always the best
THANK U EVER SO Arvo Part x
Seeing this live is an experience I am glad I have
This is a lovely modern work with many gorgeous sonorities and textures. Very enjoyable!
Thank you, Adriano, this is a treasure.
My pleasure ;) thanks.
A Genius and A Sound Healer.
Innovative, beautiful, captivating ! This profound piece of music is lovely to relax to, although I wish my peers could grasp beauty of Arvo Pärt !
Good Day to everyone !
What a lovely comment!
Innovative? Can you explain to me what is innovative in a romantic music that resumes the shames of the past ..! ??? The music of Iannis Xénakis is innovative to my ears ...
I don't know why, but the coughs and other ambient noises add to the atmosphere
for me, at least.
Also, this piece is a perfect representation of my home city, especially Downtown Los Angeles.
+Tornait How John Cage of you!
humans made it on the back porch one afternoon
if coughing adds atmosphere,- which I think is utter crap,- then why not record a room full of people coughing ? this habit in a concert hall to say the least is very irritating, and a distraction. if it were possible to eject the coughers, one would soon find out that people soon learned to stop this irritating habit. -if someone yawns, then others follow, I think it is the same very often with the coughing.
People do not always conform their behaviors to our expectations. There is a human symphony going on all around us, all the time, too.
Exquisite. Part's work is sheer magic.
...just miracle... the meditation for spirit...
Mr. Pärt is really surprises me, every time. I really love his music and him, he's such a humble man...
I think of Lepo Sumera the Estonian composer 1950 to 2000 These guys have traveled in similar musical paths during their musical lives
Arvo Pärt : verrassend goed, niettegenstaande mijn bezwaren tegen moderne muziek.
Thank you for sharing this great music!
It's very much an integration of all Arvo's musical imagination. Glorious!
Amazing .. so glad Avro Pärt's legacy lives on. Post-modern hope...

Arvo Pärt is one of my favourites. And fact is that he is one of the best modern classic composer.
Wow! I hit my own head for not knowing of this sooner! Wonderful... I can live with the occasional coughing; it reminds me of the live venue.
Iam thankfull for this
inspiring music.
Interestingly, its dedicatee is Khodorkovsky. Thanks for uploading. I like Part's music and never heard this symphony, wasn't even aware of its existence.
Khodorkovsky? Why on earth did he do that..?
encarsiaformosa Why not? He's a symbol of the new Russia that could have been but is not and who knows when or if it would be.
Roman Golubev OK, as you wish. For me he's the symbol of a self-centered oligarchy whose complete alienation from the common man gave rise to the very same autocratic regime he had intended to suppress. People want food and shelter first, then they can start to think about democracy and freedom of the press.
encarsiaformosa May I suggest you read his book Prison and Freedom. I'm sure you will change your opinion on a few things about him.
encarsiaformosa Exactly. Typical oligarch who knew the "rules of the game": and refused to play by them, so Vlad threw him in jail. Nothing more, nothing less. A very smart and intelligent man, though. He knew the score.
Amazing, I wish I could play it one day...
Referring to Gabriele Traverso's comment (which inspired many opposing responses) -- there is music for different settings and times. If I want to listen to music late at night, I would not put on Dvořák's "Carnival Overture" nor Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries." I can see how a Larghissimo tempo might be torture for some, but it is perfect for me in contemplation or repose.
So beautiful !
Extraordinario.
Very nice!!! Amazing!!! Love it!!
Sincerity is more important than innovation in Music.
It's a very beautiful music, played with exceptional skill and an impressive interior feeling. A delightful listening experience !
Thank you so much for uploading this, Adriano. This is truly sublime music.
Arvo Pärt
What a beautiful and profound piece. Very familiar with Part's music, but had never heard this. Thanks!
listen with an open window+ the bird came back sitting on the wall + giving some comments ones in a while
simply transcendent
Just perfect to sit and write to...don't have to search hopelessly for a new song, just press play and relax
Greatest symphony of last decade
Beautiful!
Wonderful composition !
Thanks a lot
WOW! Can it be true..? Arvo is showing his "American" side! I remember him saying that he does not compose his music himself but picks it up from the atmosphere, it is already there. Wether that might be metaphorical or not, you really hear him picking up on something, I really feel he's channeling Los Angeles, a very broody warm atmosphere, a little bit in la-la-land, there's something about L.A. no one understands and you hear that in this piece. It also has something to do that this was commissioned by Essa Pekka-Salonen and the L.A. orchestra for Walt Disney concert hall. Pekka-Salonen was director for L.A. Philharmonic at the time and he was not in good standing with them and I hear that goes beyond just a mere disagreement between him and the orchestra (an inevitable break-up was the result). Anyhow the right word to describe this al is: GALVANIZING!
***** American side? lmfao. It may be a concept he believes in but at any rate it's picking up the atmosphere from his individual point of view, ergo he only picks up his own atmosphere. It's like saying that his other works sound like Vienna or Tallin. There's absolutely nothing about L.A in there, if that was the case, it would sound like a soulless entity looking for popular appeal.
Angel M. Agreed, reminds me so much of the time i spent in LA. Very evocative.
Poor Angel
***** If that's your best argument, trust me, I'm not the one to pity here :)
Interesting comment, about him 'picking up something' in the atmosphere. I'm from England, and Part has a home in East Anglia, I think, where he wrote a couple of small pieces for a church there... it too has 'an atmosphere, of place perhaps.
Gracias 🌹
'I guess listening to it WHILE studying shouldn't be a problem', said the experienced one :-)
The power of music is in the live moment, and in some ways, storing it is a sacrilege - unless for archival repository like this. You Tube is a miracle.
sensaciones indescriptible. gracias por componer
It’s really such a beautiful music
Beautiful.
I really find this piece of music deeply fascinating.
Tavener,Part,Gorecki - Brilliant!
Following a trail blazed by Alan Hovhaness in the 1950s and 60s?
Thanks
lovely work by one of Estonia s most talented composers. now world famous I recommend the late Estonian master Lepo Sumera as well
I just let Arvo wash over me whenever I go there. He is the sounds we all need to hear. The planet makes more sense with his translations from the cosmos here for our ears.
Marco
amazing ! thank you !
Great , Master Arvo Part.-Great.-
I see some people see Parts music as sad,I see it as enlightening perhaps even a new beginning or rebirth of one's thoughts when this composers sublime music is played in your general direction. ❤😊
Magnificent!
AMAZING!
Have never believed that I had a soul. When I hear this music, I got one anyway.
SO SWEET !
Very interesting how civilized the comment section is.
Grob Reimer ...perhaps sensibility ,education and good taste...isn't?
must be the music :)
beautiful🌹🌹🌹
He has a stile all to his own..... God Bless your own
We are drowning in our human understanding of the world. This masterpiece is more than sound, its not just physics. My human nature falls asleep when I listen it.
the city of Los Angeles was founded by Spaniards and called by them "The Angels": the loss of accent is due to the English conquest. So the title can either refer to the angels, or to the city of the angels
merci !!!
To fully appreciate and understand this Part masterpiece one needs to have followed his body of work from past to present. This is 'spiritual evolution' at its finest. Unlike Rautavaara or others of his ilk, Part seems to have seen and 'heard' the inner light, and brought it forth to seed that same inner light in those of us 'who have eyes to see and ears to hear'. I do agree that the coughing during the performance is distracting.
I was at the premiere of this in Chicago however many years ago!
Bella y sugerente.
amazing!!!
Thank you so much, belaisko!
There's so much coughing, that I caught a cold while listening to this.
Great sound track for the movie, are climate today.
