Seattle v Portland is definitely the best MLS rivalry. There was a hot minute in the late 2010s when LAFC v LA Galaxy arguably had more juice to it, but the history in the Pacific Northwest is undeniable. As a NYCFC fan, I dream of a day when our rivalry with Red Bulls means half as much.

I'm from Portland, currently living in Chicago.
The only time in my adult life I've even come close to fighting someone was after I'd gone with the timbers army to Seattle.
Years later and miles away, I still bristle if anyone says they're from Seattle. Our rivalry goes deeper than sports. The cities just hate each other.

One thing is about Seattle and Portland is that they currently don't have any other major pro sports rivalries. Since the Sonics left in '08 Portland doesn't have an MLB, NFL, or NHL team like Seattle does so MLS is where the cities duke it out. Even at the collegiate level Washington-Oregon is the big rivalry but only UW is in Seattle. UO is a few hours south of Portland.

Besides the history and matchday atmospheres, one of the greatest things about the rivalry is that these two teams have often been amongst the strongest in the league. To put things in perspective, last season was the first time in eight years that a team besides Portland or Seattle represented the West in the Cup final.

Loved the video guys. The Sounders have a massive following up here in Seattle. Game day for the Sounders is equivalent to that of the Seahawks. Any video about the Sounders permits me another opportunity to remember a good friend and colleague. A colleague of mine who passed a way back in 2013 had collected every piece of Sounders memorabilia since their original founding in the early 70's, and had an agreement with the organization to donate it all back to them upon his death. It was a sizable and valuable collection. He and his dad were Day 1, season ticket holders, which Barney maintained all of is adult life. The Sounders were his passion and his heart beat for them. He frequently wore their gear to work. RIP Douglas "Barney" LaFleur. Who says Americans don't care about soccer! ♠

Something to note about the rivalry that happens in this match that has become a legendary goal reaction. At 18:24 in this video, Timbers Legend, Rodney Wallace does the epic “Gut the Fish” celebration. If you go back and watch, he does the motion of slashing a fish’s throat and gutting it. Still talked about to this day. Great video about the greatest MLS derby.

You have to understand that culturally the Pacific Northwest is known for being a very “hippie friendly” location. So a counter-cultural sport like Soccer is very popular in that region.
Also in terms of MLS Derbies there haven’t been many that are close enough to really make it a Derby until very recently with the addition of more teams in the MLS. The newest ones are LAFC v LA Galaxy (El Traffico), Orlando v Miami, NY Ref Bulls v NYCFC, Sporting KC v St. Louis, Austin v Dallas, and Cincinnati v Columbus.

About the cascadia cup; the rivalry between Portland and Vancouver isn’t quite as intense as the one with Seattle, but it’s still pretty crazy. A couple years ago I was at a Portland Vs. Vancouver match and one of the Vancouver defenders tackled one of our midfielders about 10 seconds after the final whistle was blown, then claimed he didn’t hear it (total bullshit). On my way out of the stadium there were many fights and arguments between supporters, it was awesome.

The entire history of the Seattle Sounder Portland Timbers rivalry is fascinating. Seattle was Founded in 1974 in the NASL,, the Timbers a year latter, the rest is history, they have hated each other since, heck MLS was the same, Seattle joined in 2010, Portland in 2011. Also Portland's homefield is a converted Minor League baseball stadium. After the Baseball team moved out, they converted it into a Soccer-Specific Stadium. The only teams now that still ground share with other sports are New England Revolution (Share Gillete Stadium with the New England Patriots of the NFL), Atlanta United (Share Mercedes-Benz Stadium with the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL, the stadium was built with this ground share in mind) Seattle Sounders (Lumin Field also hosts the Seahawks of the NFL)Vancouver Whitecaps (Share BC Place with BC Lions of the Canadian Football League) and Toronto FC (BMO Stadium was originally purpose built only for Toronto FC, but the Toronto Argonaughts Canadian Football team decided to move in, and the Stadium was renovated to fit CFL standards).

The Cascadia Cup is based on regular season games, they don't play a separate tournament. This is why the players take part, it's just part of the regular season for bragging rights.

  • @KevinQuinn81
    @KevinQuinn81 Рік тому +2

It's probably still the fiercest MLS rivalry in my estimation although LA Galaxy vs. LAFC has quickly climbed the ranks.
The Supporters Shield, given to the team in all of MLS with the most points earned in the league regular season, was also created by and still funded by the various league supporters groups. As for the Cascadia Cup, the points for it are accumulated through the course of the normal regular season MLS games that the teams play between each other so they have no trouble getting up for those games beyond the cup.

Portland vs Seattle is the fiercest, and Oldest, Rivalry in the MLS. the rivalry dates all the way back to the North American Soccer League (NASL) America's first go at pro soccer in the 70s. i think the Sounders joined MLS first, then the Timbers, and they (Portland Timbers) brought their longtime heated rivalry with them.

Other fun tidbit: the Sounders and the Seahawks both use that neon green color. Kind of neat for a city with multiple pro teams.

The original Seattle Sounders began play in the old North American Soccer League (1968-1985) in 1974, and folded in 1983. The original Portland Timbers played in the NASL 1975-1982. A new Seattle Sounders began play in 1994 in the American Professional Soccer League, which later became the USL A-League/First Division, until 2008. In 2009, the current Seattle Sounders FC began play in MLS. In 2001, a new Portland Timbers began play in USL Division 2 and played It's final season in 2010. The current Portland Timbers began MLS play in 2011. The current MLS teams and their fans are the inheritors of this rivalry that began 48 years ago and continued with subsequent teams across three leagues.

There's a really good one about the NYC Derby also the Hudson River Derby. While it does not have the history that this one does, it is an interesting look into how quickly tribalism can occur simply when a new team is introduced into an area with an already existing club. It also plays a lot on the regional dynamics of the NYC area, and is more MLS content. So if you liked this one it is probably worth checking out.

I'm 1 of the few who's actually been in all 3 stadiums & I only moved to Portland less than 6 years ago.. AAR, here's some more context for you lads. Of the cities who kept their nicknames from the old North American Soccer League all 4 are on the Pacific Coast from Canada to California. If San Jose had initially kept its original NASL name (the Earthquakes) when they started out as 1 of the original 12 MLS teams, we'd probably be talking about the Coastal Cup as opposed to the Cascadia Cup. Team brass chose the Clash as the nickname instead. That team would later move to Houston & become the Dynamo.

FYI..You're audience is not interested in soccer.. MLS has fifth tier American athletes..Stick to what we call the big 4..American football, basketball, baseball, and hockey.
You could throw in someboxing too..
We have zero interest in soccer..

@@michaelb.3982 Sure, but there are Americans with opinions other than yours. Considering that DN have mentioned that a large portion of their Discord is from Seattle, I would expect at least some of that group to be interested in a video about a long-standing rivalry involving their city, soccer or not.

No connection to either city..just enjoy the rivalry.

Portland the winner of multiple MLS cup championships, Seattle MLS champions themselves. The question of is this the best rivalry? Absolutely nothing comes close in American soccer!! Guys it's literally something you have to witness to believe.
Go Timbers Army❤❤❤❤ ok I'm leaving my mistake In my comment 🤣😂🤣 I got the championship totals for Portland mixed up. Timbers one and thorns two. And if I got Seattle mixed up? I don't give a fck🤣😂🤣
