Wow. I just heard of him from an Instagram reel. This man’s story is remarkable. Really defined what it means to be a news anchor. Much love from upstate NY!!
Ran camera for Johnny about 1980. My other job ws playing music and back then, bands often played 4-5 nights a week. So I would have very few hours of sleep before I came through the studio doors. We would have a 30 minute news cast and then two 5 minute updates from the today Show. After the 30, I would usually lay on the thick carpet behind the anchor desk and catch some Zzzzs. Johnny would come in and not wake me up. He would just uncap the camera, use his own ear piece to get cues from the director and do his show. I often woke up with Johnny setting above me, giving the news. Johnny's a great guy. If you read this, old friend, I'd like to see you.
A very well done documentary of one of the most prolific and beloved figures in the Mountain Empire. Johnny's authenticity meant he was a respected name both in the business and in the households of thousands across the decades of his work and, given that he retired a little over a year after I finished school, it is saddening to be part of that last generation to grow up waiting for Johnny to announce that our school system was closed for the day. May aspiring journalists and presenters follow Johnny's example for generations to come and strive to be as good at their craft.

I'm so glad this is a thing I've missed Johnny on the news and think of him often
