This was my first godzilla film and i absolutely loved it! Saw it twice in cinema when it came out and I never thought i would cry at a monster movie
i highly recommend you go back and watch the older movies starting with 1954 You wont be disappointed
It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. It was made on a $15 million dollar budget and made over $100 million dollars at the box office.
Less than $15 million dollar
Thank you Wikipedia.
Fun fact: The film's director (Takashi Yamazaki) was one of the winners when the film won Best VFX Oscar. This makes him one of only 2 people to win that category for a film they also directed, with the other one being Stanley Kubrick for 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.
And they focus they have a good they usually do their balance of the human and monster and if we're talking old school Godzilla which is in the same verse as this the balance is better than the American they only care about the humans

What a great movie. Noriko didn't survive just by accident. The final shot of her neck shows those black streaks spreading. So she was probably hit but a radioctive godzilla shard which allowed her to heal and not die.
it was confirmed by director that the black streaks are godzilla cells so there are theories on the internet that Noriko could be orgin of Biollante in later movies.
@@arturzmienko6096I thought the director said he didn’t plan on making any sequels to this film as it’s better as a stand alone
@@dabbadonisthestout7284 Oh, they did after, sequel will be 3 years after. Same as they did on this one, took 3 years to make it. But hasn't been greenlit yet. No story in the making yet for now, maybe in later.
@@dabbadonisthestout7284 Actually, the director said if he was approached and asked to make a sequel, he said he feels like he has to add another monster into the film.
The confirmation of G-Cells inside Noriko, likely from a loose scale being shot off by the tanks and then hurtled from the blast of Godzilla's Atomic Breath into Noriko as she was sent flying. G-Cells + Human Female = Likely Biollante origin, minus the rose part.
I doubt a shard is what protected her from dying mostly because people who were in the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings did actually manage to survive and live on afterward even when they were exposed to radiation and/or buried under rubble
So it's entirely possible that she just managed to be one of the lucky ones
Never cried so much during a Godzilla film
Same here. That’s a testament to the great script and all the actors involved. Brilliant movie. ❤
Vs Destoroyah got me back in the day.
@@lalalarose8197 Was just about to comment this. Godzilla's meltdown destroyed my then 8 year old mind.
Been watching Godzilla films for 56 years and this is by far the greatest! I don't think I will ever watch it in Color or with English dubbing.
Shin earns 1 more point than minus one only because the music score / first time he uses his nuclear breath, minus one is still awesome,
@@morbidangel2424 Shin is one of my least faves... just didn't care for it... have to give it another try
@@BryanH63Highly, HIGHLY recommend you give it another try but go into it with the context that the film is about how slow the process of governmental action actually is in the face of a constantly evolving threat, portrayed as Godzilla. It was made in response to the foolish and overly hesitant action that the Japan government demonstrated during the Fukushima Power plant disaster in 2012, their inability to act and refusal to take responsibility for what “might” have happened resulted in many more deaths than it should have.
@@BryanH63 I feel you. I don't dislike Shin but with how silly Godzilla looked for most of it, and it moreso feeling like Godzilla was just an animal that didn't really know what it was doing compared to Minus One where Godzilla actually felt like a terror, puts Minus One on a way higher score for me than Shin.
Shin just had a few really good moments, and the rest was honestly quite boring (and the way they defeat Godzilla is also kinda weird and a lot less believable of a solution than what they did in Minus One)
@@blinkachu5275 basically how I feel about Shin
the director said his cats were inspiration for a lot of the godzilla scenes which is so cute and he honestly does look like a giant cat
Feel like most godzilla movies are based on directors' cats. 😂
@@DarkninjaGD30 😂 right lol
lol, the Heisei version began with the cat inspired facial features, along side aesthetics from the OG. Outside of Shin, he casually looks terrifying and cute.
that explains the chipmunk cheeks 😂
If they wanted to distract Godzilla they could have used a giant laser XD
This is the first Godzilla movie I’ve seen where it’s actually scary and I cared about people in the movie. Such an awesome film. The whole way norico showed up in his life is very similar how I met my soulmate. He showed up at my front door during a storm and never left. Happiest years of my life.
That's fuckin adorable
I think Shin from 2016 was pretty gnarly looking.
I was the opposite. I didn't really care about anyone in this movie. Also was more boring to me than scary.
@@BigJT246understandable when all you want is spectacle and typical mediocre Hollywood storytelling.
@@BigJT246there are easier ways to say you’re simple minded
Of all Godzilla movie I've watched this one is my favorite and even the OG theme gives me chills

Just watched this movie by myself and had wanted to read some commentary to share in the awesomeness and came across your channel. It was great seeing your reactions to many of the impactful scenes. It was like watching the movie with you guys. Thank you and great job! Look forward to seeing your reaction for other movies.
To answer your question, it's called Minus One because the war pretty much dropped Japan's economic and social status down to 0 where they had to rebuild everything and rely on others for support. And now at their lowest possible state, here comes Godzilla making things even worse. So now they're in the negative or -1.0
yeah he said that
Yeah nice explanation 👍 some of the reactors didn't know what is the Meaning of Minus One, I think they didn't watch the Trailers before the Released
i would have thought it’s because its a prequel to the 50’s original
ゴジラOneはオリジナル。それより前の時代なので。他の色んな意味も含んでいると思います。
Yeah, I don't understand how people didn't understand the meaning. It's literally the very first thing explained in the first trailer.
Maybe because I'm older and have been a student of WWII, it was simply obvious.
I never understand why people don't get why Noriko saved Koichi during Godzilla's atomic breath attack. She's clearly being selfless, she put her own life at risk to save someone she cared about. How is that so hard for people to understand?
Ppl don't understand that all happened within a fraction of a second but slowed down so audience could follow but then that said audience thinks she could've saved herself too 😭
@@MacJWitDaCheese That's what I mean! They don't get that there's a thing in movies called "slow-motion"!
100% everything Fmin this thread.
Just saw this yesterday :D
The scene where she pushes him out of the way of the blast is my favorite.
This is the first godzilla movie where i actually really really care about the people and i actually wanted to see them defeat godzilla which is rare im always on godzilla side lol
I love this movie. I saw it in theaters with the fam and it was just amazing! I was screaming with the Visual Effects team won an Oscar this year. It was a beautiful moment.
The scene where Koichi is screaming in anguish while black rain falls upon him, resembling blood, is a rather accurate portrayal of the phenomenon known as “Black Rain” stated by eyewitness survivors of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is due to the radiation ionizing with loaded cumulonimbus clouds, I believe, and fell upon the ruins of the bombings. That, and the shadows blasted onto the walls of those who once stood there are two of the eldritch phenomena that comes with a nuclear bomb. Horrifying shit.
That scene will be burned into my brain for as long as I live.
The rain is radioactive too
If you think about it Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus one are basically canon to each other.
Oppenheimer - “Albert? When I came to you with those calculations, we thought we might start a chain reaction that would destroy the entire world...”
Einstein - “I remember it well. What of it?”
Oppenheimer - “I believe we did.”
Godzilla - “Surprise motherfucker!”
🤦♂️
and both movies were a pure chore to sit through.
@@thomasn3882 I’m sorry you feel that way.
@@thomasn3882 YOU MUST'VE WATCHED MADAME WEB, OR THE MARVELS.
The idea of using oceanic power to seriously harm Godzilla was ingenious. It's also one of the details in think hollywood tends to forget about.
The decompression causes bloating in most deep-dwelling organisms when they are rapidly brought up. The "freezing" look is Godzilla's soft tissues expanding
Looked like his eyes had blown out
@@Kragar01they actually did, the pressure alone made the eyes poped out, its like squeezing you hard enough you break apart
Foreshadowed by the swarms of deep-sea fishes with their innards blown out through their mouths because of the decompression that were shown prior to Godzilla surfacing.
to me this was the best movie of 2023 hands down
in the movies... without doubt...
Totally
Oppenheimer distant second. Rare case of a sequel surpassing the first film.
wow, I guess the movie must really take off in the second half of it, because I hated the first half so much that I turned it off.
@@thomasn3882 Go back to watching Marvel movies.
Jokingly, This is a movie about godzilla trying his damn hardest to final destination one guy lol
That could the summary of the film! 😅😅
Godzilla really said "Fuck _you_ in particular!"
And this Godzilla is about half the height of the Legendary Godzilla. But it feels so much more destructive.
i feel that Legendary is so big that i lose the sense of scale, and its just a giant CGI monster... Minus One and Shin felt the scale more even though they were smaller
@@DeRockMedia I feel the same way about the 1998 Godzilla. It's babies were more of a human level fear. A monster that big is like being scared of a hurricane, somewhat of an abstract fear. If that makes any sense.
They scale Godzilla to match the architecture of the time. It's why the original, showa era, and even this one are 50m, 80m in the 80s, and 100m+ with Legendary and Shin. 2014 was the best with the 100m scaling, then they seemingly lost their way with it.
Because this one is just super mega pissed all of the time. LegendaryGoji is just a silly guy who wants to party.
I am mad at myself for not going to the movies for this. Also, after watching this this deserved more awards because the Visual Effects were not the only thing beautiful about this movie. Instant Masterpiece imo.
Oscar for Best visual Effects. should have also gotten Best Actor, Best Actress, Best supporting Actress (for Akiko), Best Screenplay...
They didn't submit it for the others. It was nominated for a bunch of Japanese Academy Awards and won Best Picture and others.
@@RealBLAlley world wide it has received a lot of awards, all of them well deserved. the only reason it wasn't nominated for the other awards is because they didn't want to embarrass Hollywood any further.🤩
@@kingscorpion7346 No, they didn't want to spread the awards between too many Japanese Oscar entries. Another lesson Hollywood needs to learn.
It was the best film of the year, period.
Jus FYI it was during those test bombings at the Bikini Atoll that mutated Godzilla & over time it grew in size & gave him his regenerative capabilities
I think the director has implied that the dinosaur version of Godzilla already had the healing factor, which is why it survived Bikini Atoll
@alexkramerblogs where's the source for that
I saw this film in theaters here in Michigan. Loved it. I "found it" online before it dropped on Netflix. Loved it. I eventually watched it "dubbed" with family this weekend.
Without question, it's probably the best "dubbed" foreign film I've seen on decades. I still will continue to prefer American subtitled foreign media, but this film didn't drop the ball with the voice acting. Every aspect of this film is top-notch! Way to go TOHO Studios! Outstanding!
Hello there fellow Michiganer!!
I watched this movie nine times in theaters, seven times in color and twice in the special black and white release. Absolutely incredible film.
Netflix's subtitles are drastically different than the ones for Amazon Prime Japan. I'm am pretty sure the Prime ones are closer to the actual theatrical release but these seem to be perhaps better done.
Im assuming they based it on the dialog from the English dub. Some of the dialog was changed in the English dubbed version
@@arturocastillo804 I started watching with the dub and had to switch back to the original subtitles. These are the dubbed subtitles not the original ones. The original ones are the best in my opinion. My mom thinks they adjusted the words to try and match the movement of the mouths.
Netflix has the original theatrical subs to choose from under "English" subtitles, but they have the "English [CC]" option playing, which is the dub script subtitles for closed captioning.
@@Mugen026 Ah thank you! That makes sense.
@@bryanmyers5620 I suspect the changed words to try and suit the american ear more, with our types of phrases and cadence, but I would rather read a more faithful caption.
For those wondering what was the bruise on the lady's neck at the end in the hospital, it's made up of Godzilla cells per director Yamasaki, probably why she survived the blast. She most likely regenerated,
Fun Fact :
The lead actor "Kamiki Ryunosuke" is one of voice actor in Ghibli movie "Spirited Away", he was 8 years old. He voiced character "Boh" the big baby.
I also remember him as the lead in The Great Yokai War, when he was about 12, and the played Seita Soujiro in the live-action Rurouni Kenshin movies.
Would more recently be recognized as the voice of Taki in Your Name.
彼は2歳の時にヒーロー番組、仮面ライダーアギトで甦った神の幼児形態でスクリーンデビューしました。
日本よりこんにちは。
The scene you saw with the atomic bomb test, and the close-up of Godzilla screaming, was him being irradiated by the blast, mutating him into the horror he became. His burned skin shows that he's in constant pain, and he's attacking humans for revenge over us doing this to him.
I think the biggest thing that sticks with me about this movie is the MC having such a struggle with his survivor's guilt. Especially being Japanese, and that he was meant to die for his country. But he kept on living, while others around him died. That has to be so horrifying. To this day, people go to war, they come home, and many of them have that survivor's guilt. I cannot fathom how to even process it, but this movie did such a good job in showing how one does cope with that feeling.
Plus, goddamn, was Godzilla ever freaking scary in this movie!! Like genuinely scary!
Definitely one of my favorite movies of the last few years!
Great movie score, too. I know you can't really let us hear too much of it for copyright reasons, but Naoki Sato did incredible work for this film. I bought that album within an hour of getting home from my first time watching this in theaters.
I thought it was a monster movie.
It was also a movie about a soldier with PTSD.
I also like that point.
Perfect story.
I haven't watched it on Netflix yet, but they changed the last line of the movie...In the original, Noriko says 'Is your war...finally over?', not 'Can this war of yours...finally be done?' I think the original translation packs more emotional punch, but still...
Really an unjustice that this movie (as a movie) wasn't nominated for something other than SFX. Easily the best thing I saw in the theater last year.
I've noticed they changed a lot of dialogue in the Netflix version. It's still good but was better in the original theatrical version.
There are different translations for English [CC] and English, but the closed captions show up higher on the list and was the one they watched. The non-CC version is the theatrical one.
Since the movie doesn't really explain the "minus one" thing, the idea is that Japan after the war was already at zero, and Godzilla takes them worse than that.
Best Godzilla film by far! The sound effect in theater when Godzilla used the atomic breath on the city was insane. What a great film.
I would love to see you react to The Holdovers, Poor Things, Challengers, AfterSun, American Fiction, and The Whale.
Guys, in the ending credits you can hear Godzilla steps and roar
I watched it during its initial theater run. This is the first Godzilla film where I hear people trying not to cry.
something, that i did not achieve... it made me cry..... like many others....
the hollywood godzilla movies never got that to happen...
Cried all 9 times I saw it in theaters.
❤Those were Godilla cells on Norikos neck! That's how she survived. Great reaction.😊
Fun fact: The plane at the end was a Kyūshū J7W "Shinden", a real japanese fighter plane which entered prototype phase shortly before the end of the war. Only two prototypes were build.
you can see the front half of the only shinden to survive the war at the Smithsonian's Uzhvar Hazy Center next to Dulles Airport outside of Washington DC
このお二人は表情が豊かで面白い😊
字幕にしたのは正解でしたね
this reaction deserves a sub.
When Koichi saw Noriko at the hospital she said “is your war finally over” idk why the subtitles here were different. The is your war finally over line hits harder.
Netflix always has the worst subs for Japanese content.
The last line "Is your war finally over?" has more emotional impact than Netflix's translation. What a bummer.
Yeah, Netflix subs kind of suck, I noticed. Been rewatching this film from the imported Japanese Blu-ray with fansubs created from an in-theater cam rip of the US Toho release, much better.
So I watched it on Netflix and noticed that there were sub settings watch the one none cc one
This Godzilla probably has the strongest regeneration ability of all of the Godzillas
Absolute masterpiece. Thank you for watching the subtitled version!
I just saw this and have to say the hype lived up to the experience. What a fuckin Kaiju movie to end all movies. Im so happy that a monster movie created such a splash as this in the Cinema world. 5 stars. Perfecto.
“Where do I go? Where’s the nuke store?” Is wild 😂😂😂
One of the best films of the decade 👏👏👏
Toho Studios knocked it out of the park with this one. This is much better than watching him fight a big monkey. By the way… there is no crying during a Godzilla movie!
This is the best Godzilla film ever made. Great reaction! 👍🏿
''Like in a terrifying way he's cute!'' Lol!
Its interesting that the two versions of the English subtitles are slightly different.
The version they're watching is very different to the original subs
The version they're watching is the closed captioning of the English dub script for the hearing impaired.
The choice for the theatrical subtitles is further down on the Netflix subtitles and captioning menu.
The theatrical subtitle translation is present on Netflix. The reactors inadvertently chose the wrong version.
I love the fact that all the Japanese naval ships used in the movie were actual ships that survived the war. Also, the Shinden fighter was a real fighter in development by Japan at the end of the war, though it never saw action. The last surviving Shinden is, to my understanding, on display at the Smithsonian.
To the creators of this video.
I’m from Japan and I wanted to thank you both for releasing this video after the movie has officially been released on streaming overseas. Many UA-camrs uploaded reaction videos using the pirated versions and it was very disrespectful to those who made the movie, and those who were working hard to try to get it internationally released. Thank you for paying respect and being patient.
I give this video a big thumbs up and wish your channel all the success you deserve. You are both good people who deserve recognition for doing the right thing.
To be fair, Toho seemed allergic to Western audiences giving them money. Whens the blu ray release lol
@@Pentagram619 What’s fair about that? If you don’t know what happened you shouldn’t talk like that. Do you actually believe they didn’t want money? They waited for Godzilla x Kong to be released.
@@Pentagram619 I think it was very immature for many ppl who said similar things like you, went on and downloaded the pirated versions and don’t even feel any guilt about anything. It’s the same as robbing something from a store just cuz you want it so badly. I was very disappointed with many goji fans overseas and also UA-cam influencers who made money off pirated videos. Shame on them and i hope you’re not one of them too.
@@takashiigarashi6223 I saw the film six times in theaters. 3 times in color and 3 times in black and white. I waited a damn long time but Toho never seemed interested in bringing it stateside so yeah I caved eventually and watched an online rip again. The moment they decide to release a Blu Ray with Minus Color and subs stateside I'll buy it, but piracy was definitely justified when they waited months after the Oscar win to even bring it over on streaming.
@@takashiigarashi6223agreed. When the budget is less than $15M with this kind of quality filmmaking piracy hurts a lot more. Shame on these clowns for mocking people's hard work like its nothing.
Try Shin Godzilla movie too.....
a sequel coming in 2026 possibly.
You guys should definitely do a reaction to the original 1954 movie and Shin Godzilla next.
Those two plus Minus One are like the Holy Trinity of Godzilla movies
Yes please.
Regarding the ships, those were not brand new ships...all four were destroyers that had served during the war. They were surrendered to the UN after the war ended, and in this movie the UN gave them back so Japan would have SOMETHING to use against Gojira. The same is true for Takao (the heavy cruiser that saved Shikishima and his crew at such cost.)
The music was of course perfect, specifically the bit you commented on, and other parts, as they were essentially rescored versions of the original score created by Ifukube Akire for the original 1954 "Gojira" which has remained THE quintessential Godzilla music. I heartily recommend finding the original Gojira (Subtitled) and watching it. Yes it was made in 1954, yes it is a guy in a rubber suit, but it remains in many ways as chilling as this one. That would be a reaction I would like to see from you.
That’s what makes this film great, you weren’t tensed up worried ”did he kill it?” you’re all wondering and hoping “Did he make it? Did he live?”
Godzilla “luckiest man in Japan “
Omg ive been waiting for this
This is actually a very accurate depiction of the origin of Godzilla. He was originally supposed to be mutated by nuclear radiation from a T-Rex into what we see. Thus his very Tyrannosaurus like appearance.
I love this in Japanese dub because it shows more emotion than the English dub, plus minus one is smaller than monsterverse godzilla
You know this movie is powerful and emotional when you see youtubers cry at the end of the movie!😢😭
This film is so good. Loved your reaction. You should totally check out Shin Godzilla, Toho's previous installment. It's very different than this but just as impressive and effective.
Lol Godzilla IS cute!
They closed the curtains so people could see the map on the projector.
I’ve watched every Godzilla movie and this by far is the the best one yet. Kind of like Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie of them all (In my opinion). I believe this because of how they make it feel like We can live in that world.

I’m so glad you guys enjoyed this movie, it’s my first time seeing Cody get emotional during a reaction 😭 I hope you react to Shin Godzilla someday, I think you’d like that one too!!
So fun facts coming in! The producers wore Godzilla-themed hand pump shoes to the red carpet, lined up a lot of figurines when the announcement of their nomination came out and celebrated with them, there can be Biolantee coming up from the ending which was confirmed to be Godzilla's doing, both this one and the Minus Color one will be on Netflix very soon, both were made so cheaply that TOHO let Minus Color be made at all, and Godzilla became a police officer for a day the week after the award was announced!
I grew up with Godzilla movies.,,this was a Godzilla ”film”. I don’t remember any other Godzilla movie that made me cry. I actually cared about the characters outside of Godzilla. Great movie, easily the best Godzilla movie ever. Great review / reaction…I teared up in all the same spots as you two.
I've seen "Minus One" in the theater last year. Thank you for this video where I can re-experience the movie and all the emotions that went with it all over again. I don't have Netflix so I will wait till the Blu-ray release.
i love how many times Cody says "Oh my God!" ...and i always end it with "..Zilla" haha
This Godzilla always wakes up and chooses violence. Shin Goji seemed to be compelled to go a certain direction, and Tokyo was just in his way. This guy seems to have a personal hatred for every single person there is.
One person in particular, LOL.
Shin Godzilla was an animal in pain lashing out because it didn’t know what to do.
This is an incredible film
The first Godzilla film where I was actually pulling for the Human Element
Loved It
Glad you liked it.
Trivia: The funny-looking airplane really existed. It was the Kyūshū J7W Shinden.
This Godzilla borrows from other iterations, but it goes for the version that Godzilla was an evolved prehistoric creature that survived to modern day. When it was hit by the nuclear bomb tests, it caused him to rapidly mutate an unstoppable beast with the atomic breath. In fact, main Godzilla's skin isn't just scales, but are keloid scars left from the bomb's burns. That’s actually how the original 54 Godzilla's skin was supposed to resemble. The director also confirmed before he was hit by the bomb, Godzilla already had regenerative properties which allowed him to survive the bomb, but his healing factor caused him to rapidly mutate due to the fallout
Mr. Cody, you have so much empathy & you're good at expressing it. I can already tell this is a channel I will really enjoy watching. Thank you!!!
Also, "DUDE, STOP TWIRLING!" made me actually laugh out loud 🤣
Best reaction I’ve seen. Movie is a revelation.
Terrific reaction! I loved this film, it hit so hard.
What the title means: From the director: "“The biggest [meaning] is how people rise up from a postwar Japan that is at zero, and then Godzilla arrives, making the situation even worse and more tragic,” he said at a 2023 press conference. “It is set even before the time of the original Godzilla, so in that sense it is also a ‘minus one.’" So it also means "prequel" or that it's an origin story before the usual origins we tell.
They had Godzilla, they've made Godzilla Zero, and now they made Godzilla Minus One, and he liked how it's a commentary too.
When she pushed him out of the way I was like “I would do this for no man”😂😂😂
It’s a masterpiece.
This is what Godzilla is supposed to be... not a friggin Paladin of Humanity.
Hands down my favorite Godzilla movie. You almost forget you're watching a monster movie cause the human story is actually so good.
*Godzilla wreaking havoc 😃💀*
B: Ahh but he's kinda cute
😂 yall are the best
"Dude, stop twirling!" 🤣🤣🤣
That plane was an actual prototype designed by the Japanese towards the end of the war, designed specifically to intercept incoming B-29s.
Personally, I prefer a good dub over subtitles. I don't know if this is a good dub or not. I don't have Netflix.
If you haven't seen shin godzilla id recommend it,minus one is far superior than the American godzilla movies
It's a bummer that netflix swapped out the original english subtitles to ones that matched the english dub. Wonder why they couldn't have 2 sets of english subs: the original theatrical release, and english dub sub.
Yeah...as much as I appreciate the original and love the '60s films for the cheese factor and monster battles, this is probably the best Godzilla film. Sure the characters are a bit tropey, but boy are they lovable and the actors really sell it with their performances. The recent Legendary films are just...Michael Bay with kaiju...
So, so so glad you watched/
Great reaction but I noticed your English subs are different from mine on Netflix and from the movie in the theater. I specifically remember the plane mechanic saying the landing strip was like Swiss cheese and your version he says chock full of holes lol
