  • This exercise index video is the unilateral machine fly. This is a great movement to really isolate the chest. If you are having issue with one side being stronger or one side being being bigger this exercise will help that also. Give this unilateral machine fly a try and let me know how you liked it.

I’ve never been more sad about someone I’ve never mets passing. He was an expert, but more importantly he was the nicest guy in the industry. It’s a lesson in life values, and I’m so thankful for everything he put out and his family continue to put out.

I find that unilaterals are more intense on the muscle and more gentle on the spine. With the unilateral pec deck, you can really target that upper middle chest. Thanks, John!

Love these!!! Our gym has a Hammer Strength one and I will contract on one side and do an ISO hold while doing reps on the other side; then switch and finally finish it off with bilateral reps. I do 4 sets back and forth starting left-right-both; then right-left-both to keep it uniform. Then finish on the pecdeck with 1 good hard drop set.

Another great bite-size instruction video from John. I made a huge mistake yesterday. A friend of mine recommended another channel to me from a fitness guy here in the U.K. (no names mentioned) and he spent most of the 6-odd minutes making derogatory comments about other fitness instructors. Barely a minute of actual educational material. I am often reminded of the old acronym K.I.S.S “keep it simple, stupid”.....

Hi John love your videos and always watch, serious question but for someone old (50+) in nowhere near the shape you are in is there any point in following these on training days ? I train for strength mainly as I age (feel that’s important) but want some aesthetics as I’d like to look ok for my age. Was wondering if this sort of stuff is too advanced ? Thanks for your time regards from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿👍. p.s. I’m retired so gym time is not an issue.

I like these a lot. But during shelter in place, I just had bands, rigged them up to my door, so post my bench I would do those. Even now, with gym access, I think just the band does something for me that even the unilateral machine fly doesn't. Definitely way better than db flys though, at least for my anatomy and my shoulders :)

If I could chime in? Love this tip for unbalanced pecs. What I'd like to say is if you don't have a progressive load machine like myself try doing the reps in a progressive explosiveness/acceleration. I.E. start slow and accelerate more as you get less stretch. Or even pausing for a second at the one third portion and two thirds portion.
