Here we start to see more of the deeper parts of amethyst. She uses her humor and false confidence to mask her sadness and insecurity, but deep down she feels like a mistake that everyone is ashamed of. She is my favorite of the gems because of how we'll see her develop through the show
Y'all missed one of my favorite lines in the series! Lars asks Garnet if she's okay when the coffee spills on her. She flexes and the droplets fly off her as she states, "I drink coffee for breakfast!"
When I first watched "On the Run" as a kid I didn't have any reactions, but after rewatching it years later, it really hit me hard. That moment Amethyst decided to bend her usual character by hugging Pearl in a serious way was so bone-chilling to me. Amethyst will always be my favourite character. And this show is so good at making their characters realistic despite them being so extraterrestrial.
I always saw On the Run as a metaphor for kids who grow up in poverty, how they’re treated as potentially problematic simply because of the conditions they were born into, and how it can affect the mentality and self-worth of the kids themselves, sometimes leading to self-fulfilling prophecy if not given support and shown the benefit of the doubt.
Honestly the longer its been since Ive last seen this episode, I always forget how deep Amethysts insecurity’s and low self esteem really went and how she’d bottle it up with a smile. I feel like im starting to understand it more and more as Im in my teenage years doing the exact same things that she does here in On the run.
People always say this is where they think garnet “becomes” more maters toward Steven, but I think she’s always been that way towards him. It was just never highlighted
Since no one seems to have said this yet, yes, the show's creators confirmed that "The Enigma of Amigara Fault" by Junji Ito was an inspiration for the Kindergarden's look. Amethyst's "It's my hole. It's me sized" dialogue is also a reference to that manga. There's actually quite a few manga/anime references throughout the show since the creators are big fans of that stuff.
All of this show is amazing, but for me On the Run just hits different. It's the first episode where the deep themes and relationships between the gems are highlighted, the first hint of all the background they have that we don't know anything about yet but we will know and it's just... chef's kiss. Thanks for your reactions, they're always so fun to watch!
I swear I get so hyped when I see a post from you guys, especially when it's a Steven vid! Edit: Also after the (Mirror gem) episode, (On the run) is my second fave episode of season 1
I've always loved that part with Garnet. "I see so many things that can hurt you.. I never should have let one of them be me." It's just so beautiful. Especially because she's usually pretty neutral and level headed about a lot of things, every moment where Garnet expresses emotions so openly is just something else. On the run is also an amazing episode. It's super fun rewatching these old eps and seeing all the things hinted at and interwoven in every episode, that you just don't pick up on the first time around. Banger show fr
Love how the episode and reaction cut off just before the very very end of On the Run in the last few seconds where the clouds clear up a bit after they leave to ominously display the walls upon walls upon rows of gem holes.
Future Vision explains part of Garner's apparent coldness as her having to keep secrets because she fears Steven can't understand her. This is shown to be true for Pearl & Amethyts too in On The Run, who fear Steven might think of them badly if he understood more about them. That's one of the recurrent themes of Steven Universe, how hiding parts of yourself to preserve your relationships is actually counterproductive and sabotaging, for you & others. Amethyst's pain in On the Run is like that of a child whose adoptive family talks badly about their original country.
Two things! 1) Good catch with the Enigma of Amigara Fault reference, that's exactly what the Kindergarten was based off of! 2) One thing I LOVE is the little piano bit that plays when Amethyst and Pearl make up: if you listen, it's a small snippet of the theme that played when they formed Opal in Giant Woman, which is good symbolism to show they're back on the same page again!
You can see how uncomfortable Amethyst is from the very beginning of "On the Run", as soon as Pearl starts talking about how she, Garnet and Rose decided to protect the earth. Steven doesn't notice that Amethyst is left out of that little speech. And none of us picked up the implications back in the first Lion episode. Garnet said "We kept Amethyst" as a joke, but apparently they did just find her in a strange place and take her home like Lion. Kindergarten = "child-garden".
There's an interesting contrast between Steven Universe and Adventure Time. SU was envisioned from day 1 as having a set story, with arcs and themes. There is an unbelievable amount of both active and passive foreshadowing of stuff that won't pay off until the second or even third season, even from episode 1. Where as AT was initially just random ideas where the writer was making it up as he went along, only later starting to adhere to a set story with proper lore and a story that starts building towards something.
I can never understand it when people diss this show and say the characters have no personality. We have 7 seasons of character growth! And it was amazing!
i think I have said it before, but I love your reactions to this series, and it really makes me happy everytime I see you upload a new video so tHAAAnKs 💗 And it strikes me that you guys have been so interested in the series so quickly with so much still to come, but hey, it means it's probably going to be a very good experience? xDD
Great episodes :) Even from Steven's lack of information, it is noticeable that there is also a lack of communication between the gems, and that hurts all of them. It seems that there is a need for more understanding and emotional support in this family.
This is my favorite season 1 episode. It wasn’t always, but after some events coming later it is now. After this episode amethyst was my favorite character (until a certain character we just met steals the show).
time for me to catch up 2:03 little bit of morning taiso :) but not JP 3:40 because he startled him -- hmm when I see this I think that if she had told Steven to either wait or call out quietly, he might've gotten that one potential future Ah, but I guess high-fives aren't fated to happen for these two 5:05 time to consider 6:34 good voice delivery tho it hurts 7:45 and I love the delivery of "what am I doing?" Good joke. 12:31 haha FAIR especially with the way she glided back into the hole
That’s because 90% of people skip or click off the video within 5-10 seconds of the reaction ending so leaving anything in after actually hurts the videos performance. We wish it wasn’t the case but it’s down to the audience sadly!
i wish you guys would give a little bit of feedback at the end of the second episode on its own like you do with the first one, it just makes me fell like you guys might miss dialogue or something by talking about it while its still playing. just a suggestion love the videos tho guys!
Garnet has fewer lines in the early episodes because her voice actor is expensive. The show had to get popular in order to justify the expenses to the studio.

i was 10 when on the run first aired and even tho i was young, i still remember being hella suspenseful watching it 😭😭
I feel that dude. I was like maybe 7 when the episode aired, and here I am nine years watching it again and personally relating to Amethyst especially
I was holding back tears watching this lol

'Future Vision' is very interesting if you watch older episodes, because it's hinted at a bunch. But in a way you would not normally notice.
Honestly the longer its been since Ive last seen this episode, I always forget how deep Amethysts insecurity’s and low self esteem really went and how she’d bottle it up with a smile. Also the line “I never asked to be made” still hurts as much as it did as the time I realized what she meant by that!
@@elizabethp1772 Still makes me cry seeing her hurting so and totally getting what she means.

Definitely starts to display it more from here for sure!

These episodes both get to me, but it's Amethyst's pain in particular that always gets the waterworks going.

unfortunate they talked over amethyst's breakdown but good vid nonetheless
Yeah I hope they take time to watch it again and really take it in!
We can talk and still soak it all in! ☺️
I can never understand it when people diss this show and say the characters have no personality. We have 7 seasons of character growth! And it was amazing!
Watching a character wrestle with self-hate and guilt... hoo boy. Kids show, everyone!
The reason I love this show so much is that you can relate to parts of any character. You’re going to see more development or the Crystal Gems.
FUCKKKKKKK THIS ONE BREAKS MY HEART EVERY TIMEEE
im pretty sure the design from amethyst's home was inspired by that Junji Ito story you mentioned, i've seen many people drawing that parallel.
On the runs a good one especially future vision I agree garnets whole voice line when Stevens on the roof so good
Wow, i never considered Cookie Cat could be evil
i think I have said it before, but I love your reactions to this series, and it really makes me happy everytime I see you upload a new video so tHAAAnKs 💗

... The gem species are strip miners on a planitsry scale, that I thnk is the best non spoiler way to say it

6:34 good voice delivery tho it hurts
7:45 and I love the delivery of "what am I doing?"
Good joke.
12:31 haha FAIR
especially with the way she glided back into the hole
Coming up to "the answer" I think it's season 2 episode 5. Easily my favourite episode, I love Garnet
I do like your reactions, but it's always so jarring how you abruptly end the reaction the second the episode is done.
That’s because 90% of people skip or click off the video within 5-10 seconds of the reaction ending so leaving anything in after actually hurts the videos performance.

Poor Amethyst
Oh... The next two are the season 1 finale aren't they? 🤩
There’s still a few more before the finale!
stop talking during important songs or scenes, pause if you need to. love the vids keep it up
When we pause people skip the videos so it hurts the videos performance so sadly we can’t! Glad you like the videos! ☺️
@@ProjectSenpai ahh makes sense, cant wait for you guys to get to the end!
This show just has SOOOOOO much to relate to.
Garnett: guys you don't know the half of her.
Rose: hidden is a massive understatement.
*evil* hehehe
guy at the top talks so much he missed out on everything
the guy on the top talks too much when the characters are speaking
Garnet is a G, literally G for Garnet
