Wow I literally have a space shaped like this in my shop and my racks of transfer punches and stuff that I've wanted to store there. This timing is perfect for inspiration
I love the glowy little nooks. You’ve mentioned that before (liking the little bits of light in various spots). Makes the whole space inviting and interesting.
Every once in a while I think about the fact that someone out there is going to get Adam Savage on their post-apocalypse zombie survival team and I can't help but be jealous.
Is it too soon to talk about the good things the pandemic has brought us? In any case: Adam filming his own videos. It’s such a perfect style. Just him, and the camera on a creaky loc line.
These are awesome videos, and whilst it maybe more work on Adam vs having a camera person in the workshop (which could end up being annoying), they are more intimate and seem more spontaneous, especially as they are timed around Adam's energy and don't seem to need to be booked weeks in advance. Don't get me wrong, I really like them, time in the shop with an acquaintance who's interested in enough of the same things, but also brings new ideas. Parasocial relationships not withstanding. My concern is that they saw the channel was still doing well with these types of video (which are cheap to get out of the door), and we have lost a lot of the other content and videos from outside of the shop. Is that a cost cutting measure, probably, is that an Adam Savages workload changing thing, possibly. TBH I always thought Will and Norm were not good hosts, giving deference to sponsor of the week but without the ability to bring life to talking points in the same way as Adam, maybe that's just me, even though this whole Tested channel thing was Will and Norms idea! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tested.com Maybe they assumed that this would grow into a much bigger financial endeavour, something large enough to support like an LMG, and whilst profitable, has matured in it's own direction.
Another great video, I think this is the 3rd or 4th build in the last few months in which you have put lights into cabinets. You might want to think of a power delivery system/architecture to save having a heap of wall wart power supplies around your cave. I’d suspect if I was doing it I’d have at least 2 output terminals on the back of each cabinet so you could attach picture cabinets to. There are some interesting Chinese copies of wago connectors that could be useful with this
I saw Adam’s remarks about Cutting Edge Engineering Australia. As a fan of that channel. I really hope that Adam can Make it back to Australia and visit the CEE workshop. It would be so very awesome. Might even get enough video for a multi-part episodes. My only wish is that should it happen, that content be made available for everyone.
I won't be surprised if we get to see a complete, fully-furnished, doll house build someday. A future grandkid is going to get the best Christmas present ever! I just hope it has a tiny workshop!
Nice Goldilocks solution for things that get "lost" on the shelves because you can't see them. It is not fun playing Hide-n-Seek with tools that don't want to be found!

From past shop re-work videos, I've noticed that your wiring for lights, etc on that wall is a complete rat's nest of extension cords. You also set up a power supply for each lighting job, even though it is TOTAL overkill. You could solve 2 issues at once by using one of the 8A 12V supplies you retired from your flexible bench lighting, putting a barrel plug on the outlet, then using an octopus cable to split it to 8 outputs, lighting EIGHT shelves at once. None of those shelves should come close to using 1A. You could either extend the wiring from each shelf to that octopus splitter, or put barrel plugs on a short wire with each shelf, then use M/F barrels and the needed wire to reach to the octopus. This would reduce the number of power supplies you use (in the one video you retired 2 8A, so you could wire the second with a barrel plug to keep as a backup), reduce 120V cords on the wall, and if you put the barrels near each shelf with M/F extensions, it would make it very easy to unplug a shelf if you needed to move it for some reason. You could even mount the barrel connectors directly to a corner of the shelf, though that would remove strain relief compared to a short wire.
And if you're worried about the barrels disconnecting, zip ties to the rescue! Put one loosely on each barrel, loop another through the two (use one that is removable/reusable), then snug the ones on the cords down on that one. Tighten it enough to keep them from coming undone.
Adam, as a child, you must of loved presenting empty shoe boxes and smaller boxes all along the wall, then you progressed to Lego's and finally your first shelf you built. Fun to be a Hoarder! Hehehe
I know that if I had a brush handle sticking out of the 2nd shelf like that, I'd smack into it every time I moved across, but my basic klutz-fu is unmatched. Fun project!
Think of using small trays to put the small bottles etc on. You can pull them out when accessing the ones in the middle/back. The sushi trays from grocery store sushi/sashimi work nicely (and keep them out if the landfill/incinerator). Enjoyed this video!
I like the little bit of table space in front of the shelves. probably not always useful but sometimes you might want to be doing something right there
If you've seen other videos you'll know a lot of the units are on castors so they can be moved out of the way for when he needs the whiteboard (see, for example the bear costume video). But presumably because it's not something he needs to get to a lot of the time that's why it's okay to be behind stuff.
I like how the moment Adam mentions a rear facing light, I had the same thought about the diagonal channel that he describes wanting to cut. Although I imagined the diagonal cut to be a lot wider.
Adam, I know you like tools, so if you want to go fancy with those solder sleeves, look for a Raychem IR-550 heat gun...its all we were allowed to use for shrinking solder sleeves on electrical harnesses when I was working in aerospace. They can sometimes be a pain to use, and theyre not cheap, and theres no need for it at all since a regular heat gun works just fine, but...FANCY SPECIALTY TOOL!! lol
I like the way you are constantly improving your storage. Have you ever considered setting up your material storage like a hardware store? Savage Hardware.
So... all the cabinets like this with lighting. How do you turn the lights on and off when you leave at night. Do you have them all plugged into a master circuit? I would think it would be a pain to turn them all on when you come in or even as needed.
Your videos always make me want to organize my workshop, but i am not alone there.. Another thing i think about is your electric infrastructure... would hate to see something catch fire. If you make a video on electric cleanup and safety that might inspire a few of your followers to do the same thing.
Just put the extra shelves on top of other shelves, double-up on them. They'll add additional support, and they'll never go missing because they'll always be in the unit where they belong.
I never knew this but Adam would look super cool with a slight pink faded tips on his hair. I think it was the ceiling lights that made his hair look a bit pinkish?
The extra shelves, slipped beside the cabinet... How about slipping them in at the bottom of the case, under the transfer punches? That way, they are less likely to be separated from the cabinet, and easy to find if you reconfigure the shelves. You could actually just double or triple up any shelf to stash the extra shelves, so long as that didn't squeeze the space too tight.
A dedicated workshop organization channel is something I’d love.
sign me up if they are long form videos! haha
Why not just put it all on the same channel like a normal person. Why does everyone need 14 channels?

With the amount of in shelf lighting Adam has going on, at some point it's going to make sense to combine them nearby shelves to a common 5v adapter.

Weirdo
Some watch for the project.
Some watch for Adam & the dialogue.
Some, for that sweet workshop ASMR.
I wonder about adding a dark stain or paint along the the visible chamfer, so that the illumination of the light strip doesn't flare so much?
Storage is key to a organized space but storage can become a obsession & you well find you never have just the right amount
The same lights works great to light up the edges of bookshelves. A dado blade saves a ton of time if you have one.
When Adam was gluing the back his tray of parts was unlatched right behind him. Livin dangerously !! 😂
With Baltic birch being so expensive these days, what are you all using for these kinds of projects?

Gonna use that led channel trick in some escape room props for sure.
15:33 I gotta ask, what are these magical connectors and where can I buy some?!
They are solder seal wire connectors.
I've got to get me one of those wire strippers, plus that tack gun -- I've noticed he uses that quite alot.
4:05: Where's the twelve-foot + A-frame ladder to reach those top bins?
I'll say it for you.
