I think puss wouldn't have risked sailing to far far away and then travel to the swamp, the stray cat shelter is his local safe haven, it doesn't involve this journey where he might encounter the wolf again. Remember, shrek could walk to duloc by foot, but they had to ride a horse carriage for more than a day in order to get to FFA. Beyond that, i think it makes sense that puss, at this point, would seek the help of a stranger rather than a friend. It's the difference between being some stray cat to someone who doesn't know you - and showing vulnerability to someone you know well, someone you respect and who respects you It would hurt puss' ego if shrek thought less of him.

This is a great question. I imagine Puss would be pretty embarrassed to go to Shrek and his Family who've known him as this badass hero who fears nothing, just to show up shaking in his boots looking for a hideaway with them, and after the encounter with Death, maybe he purposefully went to Mama Luna and not to the Shreks because he didn't want to bring that kind of danger to Shreks family.

2:39 That's exactly the reason. She wasn't unhappy, she was just so extremely fixated on her overidealized concept of family that she ended up pushing aside those closest to her. Now as to why she kept it a secret from them? Probably because she thought that they would discourage her from doing so, and yet, this didn't end up being the case. They didn't ask for a reason and then try to dissuade her with counter arguments like Goldi would've expected. This revelation might have been the final push needed for her to change her mind. I find their whole story oddly beautiful, even if I do agree that it had been dumbed down a little by the end.

I think she also kept it a secret cause she was fraid of them just dtiching her. Para and Baby were ready to be like "Okay then, so it's a goodbye". They were a family to her, but she wanted a "real family", and I believe she kept it a secret cause she didn't wanted to have no family whatsoever, A case of like "Until I get the REAL family I want, I can be with this step-family"

Disagree. I think The Last Wish establishes that Puss has trouble being vulnerable in front of other people and friends. Him going to Shrek or Donkey, friends who have seen his heroism firsthand and remember him as a legend, and having them see the fearful person that he’s become would be extremely humiliating and totally at odds with his values at the beginning of the film. By the end, I think Puss goes to see them not because they‘ve resolved bad terms, but because he’s accepted himself as more than just a legendary figure and as a person with intrinsic value. It would no longer be humiliating for Shrek or Donkey to see Puss as a vulnerable person.

Sums up just about says everything I wanted to counter-argue with, the first act of the film establishes that Puss has seemingly been riding solo for so long, consumed by the lust for fame and narcissism for himself that he fell out of touch with a lot of his contacts. Puss can't let himself be seen in any state of vulnerability because of the persona he fabricated for himself. It's through Puss' arc that he learns to value his life and the friends he has. The ending scene with him, Kitty, and Perrito sailing to Far Far Away solidifies the character growth Puss experienced because he's taking the initiative to go reforge and maintain the relationships with the people he neglected for so many years.

I feel like there are two reasons puss didn't go to shrek
    1. He wouldn't want shrek, donkey, or Fiona to see him venerable
    2. What's shrek going to do? Everyone knows that shrek's orange cat is puss in boots, so when he thinks death is a bounty hunter, he's going to think shrek is the first place to go

    • @mufinboi975
      @mufinboi975 Рік тому +25

I like the 2nd idea better. Death wont be stopped by the sea and puss has made a bit of public knowledge that they are friends or companions. So im sure that if I were a bounty hunter then thats where I would go. Shrek and his kids (I think I dont remember the movies that well) would be brought danger by puss just to protect him from death. The same if he want back to his home town: obvious place to go and too much danger. Also even before that im sure he probably thought of shreks place but was simply embarrssed as is almost everyone elses theory in this videos comment section.the guy who was confident and brave and just a super cool and could do cool tricks would now be extra baggage to them as his glory days would be over. He mightve thought about his home town, shreks and some places where he could live in isolation.

I do think the idea with Goldy was intentional to show her familial life as idyllic. I took her argument with Baby more as typical sibling arguing.
And all that made the story better from my POV because it told me as a viewer that Goldies' desire for a human family was out of some misplaced sense of not belonging among the bears. It's why Mama Bears' line about making things just right for Goldy hits me in the feels so hard.

  • @Starkstar502
    @Starkstar502 Рік тому +58

Well, about the "why didn't he go to Shrek and Donkey?" thing, I can infer three things:
    1. They had families to take care of and he didn't want to impose.
    2. He feared he would be made fun of by his friends because he's supposed to be fearless.
    3. Shrek and Donkey could've had adventures of their own before or around the same time as this movie.
I think the first and third options are more likely.

    • @kylefrank638
      @kylefrank638 Рік тому +3

Actually I think 2 is the best option to work with. Not wanting to impose, eh, not really something Puss seems concerned with? But, Puss (in the first half of the movie) seeing those two as merely "more of my compatriots that I fought beside, but they still adore me from afar, I couldn't face them if they knew I was running away".. that, I can see.

    • @senseweaver01
      @senseweaver01 8 місяців тому +1

Honestly I think two is the most likely. When has Puss ever cared about imposing? He is such a task-focused cat that he would jump into any situation without thinking anyway. And Shrek and Donkey having adventures is arbitrary as all hell. Puss doesn't like appearing weak, he's known as a fearless unflinching hero across the land. Why would he want to appear weak to his friends?

For me the reason Puss didn’t go to Shrek was simply because of embarassment. They parted ways some time ago and it would be hard for him to show up to Shrek and Donkey in his lowest moment, when they last seen him in, in his opinion at the time, the peak of his glory. It’s also neat bc irl cats tend to hide when they feel unwell, so not to show their weakness.

Consider that the reason that puss didn't go to Shrek was because Shrek was at his wedding and when he left kitty at the alter he couldn't face his old friend, who is a big family man. He avoided going to Shrek because of the shame the memory of Santa Coloma brought him, and he didn't know if Shrek would accept him after he left. He can only return now because he has made up with kitty and no longer feels as much pain as he did then.

Shrek and Donkey cameoed in a flashback is perfect enough for me. I think that Puss left Shrek and Donkey to have some time to himself. Besides, since the film is all about Puss, it wouldn't do to have Shrek and Donkey take part in the plot so cameo appearance in flashbacks would do for them. I think from his perspective, he stands a much better chance being kept safe if he’s surrounded by his friends, and whatever security they have, than if he’s found by the wolf in a cat house.
Edit: Also the theory that he didn’t want to lead the wolf right to Shrek doesn’t account for why he didn’t mention them when the scene asked if he had anyone he could go to, since that was before the wolf scene

Honestly I kinda see the opposite.
If he thinks the Wolf is just a Bounty Hunter, it makes sense that his hiding place is a location where no one expects him to be; that being the Cat Retirement home. Afterall, the Bounty Hunter said "I've been following you for a long time" and went on and on about Puss' famous attributes. It's vague as hell, but in Puss' panicked state, that could mean the worst in that the Bounty Hunter knows who he's friends with too.
However, if Puss realized sooner that the Wolf was Death incarnate and thus always knows where he's located at all times, then I can see him being more open to running towards his friends because obviously it wouldn't matter where he went.

A nuance that makes all the difference when discussing what happened. His pride and ego were what was causing him to be lonely, running away from relationships he had forged to go seek out personal glory. As such, it makes sense that early on he didn't consider going back to them, but finally does after learning his lesson about what it means to live and valuing the bonds he has forged.

in my opinion it's actually because puss is afraid of commitment and connections, so that's why he doesn't think of going to see shrek. just my 2 cents based on what the movie established about him pre him losing 8 of his lives, mainly that he's a bit of a narcissistic jerk who thinks he doesn't need any help and is very in love with the legend (that walks alone)

Here’s my issue with this gripe, what seems more reasonable, that after his encounter with death that he would go to the lady who was just mentioned to him the day before, who takes in cats, looking for a place to hide. Or that after his encounter with death he would go “oh right I have an ogre friend who has an entire family to take care of and lives across the ocean and (as far we know) I haven’t seen in a while, I should go run to him so I can endanger the lives of my friends and his children while I hide from the only person who’s ever drawn blood from me” the more you analyze this, the more your argument falls apart, any reasonable person would not want to endanger the lives of their friends. Also you have to consider the way the mind works, if you are told about something and the opportunity to do that something arises 12 hours later, you are MUCH more likely to think of that, and probably take that course of action because it is fresh in your mind, would it make more sense for him to just decide not to go to the cat lady who he had just learned about and instead steal a boat and go across the ocean to hide with his friends who he hasn’t seen in god knows how long? No, that is significantly harder and puss just got his ass beat so he’s probably looking for an easier solution, like hiding by becoming a house cat. Not to mention then we’d be stuck in the situation of “why did puss decide to go across the entire ocean to see shrek? What about that lady that they said takes in cats?” I’ll end my rebuttal to your point by saying that although yes all fan service is technically forced, there’s a line between fan service cameos, and having your ENTIRE PLOT revolve around something that is essentially fan service, spiderman no way home somehow manages to do that without the movie being a nightmare, but if puss decides to go see shrek, I am 100% certain that the movie wouldn’t have been nearly as good, and we’d be complaining about the unnecessary use of shrek in a movie that is not about shrek.
Great video and I’m glad someone had the balls to say there was something about this movie they didn’t like.

I think the reason he didn't go to his friends is because he didn't want to put them in danger. Imagine the wolf finding him and them fighting and one of Shrek's or Donkey's children getting hurt along the way. Puss would never forgive himself for that. So he chose a random stranger to go to.
And in the end, when he knows Death isn't after him anymore he is ready to meet them again.

I’d like to think his ego got in the way of him choosing to go to Far Far Away instead of Mama Luna’s. That was before Death knocked his ego down a few hundred pegs, so he didn’t want to go running away to Far Far Away (which is a headcanon of mine, that he ended up in Far Far Away after he ran away from Santa Coloma and marrying Kitty Softpaws) and Mama Luna’s seemed even worse. By the time he gets his shit rocked by Death, he’s completely beat emotionally so he goes to Mama Luna’s, as he might think that’s where he deserves to go (as a bit of an overreaction).
Not to mention, in Far Far Away he’s still Puss in Boots, and Death would still follow him there. I don’t think Puss would decide that Death (having still been thought to be a Bounty Hunter) wouldn’t follow him, considering Death states that he’d been following Puss for a long time, so why wouldn’t he continue to follow him.
Maybe it’d be a cool What If story, I dunno.

2 reasons/headcanons why puss didn't go to shrek
1: the travel to far far away could've been long and dangerous + he has no way to get there, unless he would've stolen the governours boat wich would've gotten him to fight with guards wich he doesn't want to risk
2: he might be ashamed of himself. In all the movies he's with shrek he pretends like he's this big legend (example: him constantly fighting villains or striking hero poses all the time) but if he would go to him he would probably feel more shame then just to go to some random cat lady that can't lose respect for him

I feel like Goldi's arc would have been better served if she had moments where her insecurity of not being in a human family showed up. Like if she acted like a bear sometimes and other people gave her weird looks or she saw a happy human family walking around holding hands. Keep the positive relationship with her Bear family, just add stuff to show how her insecurities are driving her.
You get the same arc that way while better establishing her motivation for wanting to leave her awesome family.

While it is a valid point, I may have four main counter-arguments:
    1) Was he really a FRIEND-friend, tho?
If I remember correctly, Puss was "indebted" to Shrek since he "saved his life". Essentially, I'm trying to say that he still was a hired sword, who was, as he thought, following his own "code of honor" so he stuck around to pay his "debt" and then left in pursuit of glory and honor. So he may have not even been close to his "contractors" in the face of Shrek and friends
    2) Denial and hubris
He couldn't think up of a place, where he could go because he didn't want to. He, in the moment when he was with the doctor, didn't want to come to terms with his mortality. He's a legend, a fabled outlaw - Puss In Boots, first and for most
    3) Safety reasons and paranoia
Why would he risk sailing over an ocean/sea/whatever to get to a distant swamp, when the cat apothecary is right there? Also, who knows what dwells in the deep?
    4) SHAME
If you had your ass beat so bad, without much effort on the part of the opposition, that you wanted to retire, would you immediately come to terms with the fact that you had to tell about it to your friends straight without any half-truths and sugarcoating? Not many would've or could've

When the doctor asked if he had anyone to go to and Puss didn't bring up Shrek, it's because Puss doesn't see the fact that he's on his last life as serious. He was going to continue living as he does and even tells the doctor so. The doctor simply did his due diligence and gave him someone to go to if he decided to change his mind, under the assumption that Puss doesn't have anyone to go to.
It's only after the fight with the wolf that Puss is faced with his mortality and felt fear, and this is where he decides to high tail it and run. At this point he could go back to Shrek, but again, Puss just thinks a bounty hunter as after him so he wouldn't need go running to Shrek for such a problem. He can just lay low at Mama Luna's instead.
When he finds out the bounty hunter is actually Death, it's a little late to go running to Shrek now as he's close to the Wishing Star to make the wish. And even if he ignores the wish and goes running to Shrek now, what good would that do? It's Death. Shrek won't be able to save him. This is a problem he has to confront head on or take the coward's way out with the wish, and we know which choice he made.
The suggestion in the video is good, too, but I'm guessing they don't want Shrek 5 to deal with what Puss did to Shrek to cause the falling out, or have to deal with any kind of amends. Shrek 5 should just start with everyone on good-ish terms and deal with Shrek's problems.

There are two ways I can justify it in my mind.
    1. We could say that puss in boots 2011 is a sequel to forever after which doesn’t change much. It just puts the flash back scene before Shrek 1 and the rest would be after forever after. And it would make sense of puss not going to Shrek. You know your friend or brother in law you don’t see for long periods of time then they come back outta nowhere asking for favors? I don’t see puss as that guy. I see donkey as that tho
    2. You can look at this as a soft reboot. It makes more sense for me at least. As I didn’t see the previous shreks before watching last wish.
Extra note. Just because they aren’t on speaking terms, doesn’t mean there not friends. It’s kinda implied that they aren’t on speaking terms.

I disagree. Puss has always had pride, so going to Shrek and Donkey, his best friends, would have in his eyes, made him way too vulnerable. It's not until the end of the film, that Puss fully realizes his mortality and humbles himself, when he realizes that he is facing death itself.

The last scene is literally a cherry on top of the whole cake. It shows that now Puss has better priorities, choosing to meet his friends than to just waste his last life on travelling to some random villages and pretending to be a superhero for random peeps (who cheer him up mostly because they are bought by money he steals and gives them back, anyway). Puss realized that this is not how he wants to continue living.

I think the reason why puss didn't move in with the shrek's was either because he didn't want them to see him at his lowest, especially after he had left for adventure; or since as far as he knew at that point the wolf was just a bounty hunter and would either search him out there or maybe hunt shrek as well, I'd imagine most places would still have issues with ogres or would pay top dollar for a famous one like shrek; or it is a mix of the two

3:00, there was a moment in the film where Baby expressively left her out of the family; it was when Goldi got the map the first time around. Before her group made their escape, Baby said, "... you just got crime-ed by the 3 Bears Crime Family." A bit subtle, but it hints that Baby had not accepted her as part of the family.

As for not going to Shrek, since he thought the wolf was a bounty hunter, it makes sense for him to assume that the wolf wouldn’t be able to find him if he disguised himself and pick the convenient option that was close to him instead of going to his friend far away.

While I do agree that Puss was trying to play off or dodge the Doctor's question. I don't think it was because he didn't consider Shrek an option. It was very clear he wasn't considering retiring at all so being obtuse instead of validating the suggestion makes sense.
    Even ignoring Puss' vague response.
That the bar scene turns going to Shrek from a unlikely possibility to a very likely liability.
    Hypothetically speaking
If Puss was the best fighter I knew for miles that could take on an entire group of trained guards, a dragon & things of that supernatural nature.
If the first thought he had was to bring himself to me while I have a family with 3 kids to raise, while still being chased by a "bounty hunter" that toyed with him and almost killed him.
    I'd regret being his friend.
I'm pretty glad Puss didn't think to indirectly drag a threat that was super unpredictable and stronger than anyone either of us know to the friends that he cares about.
Granted heading to Mama Luna also would send The Wolf towards another vulnerable population there are 2 reasons why that's still more logical than heading to Shrek or Donkey.
    1. The Doc is the only one not at Mama Luna's that would know where Puss is, and he was told by Puss he wasn't gonna go there so it's unlikely he'd point anyone who tracked him down in his direction. If they some how managed to track him down.
    2. There are a lot of cats at Mama Luna's. Considering Baby has a very impressive nose and still couldn't find Puss among all the smells. It's likely that a lot of other hunters would fall into the same brick wall if they'd made it to the house and tried to kill him.
Without some magic malarkey like the Crystal Ball Jack has (which he had no reason to use on Puss until he stole from him).
Mama Luna's house is the safest bet if Puss is looking for a place to go into hiding.
    Even ignoring all of that.
Puss is way too egotistical ATM to retire with any former buddies.

Don’t think Goldi being unhappy with the bears would’ve been good at all. It works because she loves them but only shows discontent when she sees something she can’t have, biological parents.
For not going to shrek, it’s probably because shrek told him he becomes fat when he retires under Fiona’s care and he’s not going if he loses his dashing hotness. It also could be that he just didn’t want to admit he was on bad terms with Shrek because shrek is popular and so is he. How could a legend ruin a connection to a king ogre and he needs to keep the lie that he has friends to go to even if he ruined the friendships he had. But the end doesn’t have him fess up that something went wrong.

Respectfully disagree, I think it's quite obvious why he didn't go to Shrek. The movie clearly shows Puss being an extremely proud person who has trouble being vulnerable. Going to friends who know him as an unbreakable hero would be showing weakness and, in the eyes of Puss, humiliation. Of course for someone like that it would be preferable to hide away at a stranger. At the end of the movie he's grown as a person and learned to accept himself, vulnerability included. He also learned to value his life and the relationships he's formed, so it makes perfect sense he wants to travel back and cherish them. I think adding adding the conflict you mention would sway wayyy to much to the direction of tell rather than show, which, as you've pointed out, the movie already had instances of.
