  • Traveling to Athens, Greece and not sure where to eat? What's the most classic street food in Greece? The answer is the gyro or the "souvlaki." Today I test five famous gyro places around Athens.
Both the gyro and the souvlaki use a pita and have vegetables, tzatziki sauce, and french fries, but the meat is cut differently in each of them. Gyro in Greek means "round," so this is the big spigot of meat where they shave slices put into the pita. On the other hand, the souvlaki has chunks of meat (chicken or beef) put into the pita. They are slightly different but taste similar. You won't go wrong with ordering either one!
Have you been to Athens? What is the best street food you've eaten there?

A few things that are misinformed in the video.
Traditional gyro it's always pork with tzatziki.
Not the beef (it's actually veal) and definitely not the chicken.
At Κωστα in Monastiraki there's no chicken at all.
    It's pork kalamaki or bifteki.
In Omonoia at Λευτερης ο Πολιτης it's bifteki only with no fries.
It's small bc it's traditional and it's served like that from the beginning nothing has changed.
And it was 1.90 but now everything it's going up.
Great video tho for showing Athens and very glad you enjoyed everything.
Yes it's a nightmare to drive here but for us that grew up here it's a piece of cake just another day lol.

I have no idea why your getting beef or labm in your gyro, The traditional Greek gyro is pork, you like doner kebabs from what I can tell. That Savvas place those people are probably from Asia Minor from what I can see, we don't have labm gyros in Greece your eating doner my firend.

Lefteris O Politis near Omonia has been around for 70 years and only serves beef soulvakis. I think there is diversity now in what constitute a true “gyro,” but I’m not a fan of the pork version. You’re Greek so I trust what you’re saying.

@@kindlentech316 The beef, falafel, kebab, lamb, came from the Greeks or Christians of Asia minor after the great population exchange in the 1923, they brought food that was in there area of the ottoman empire that's why Lefteris O Politis is 70 years and savvas have this middle eastern tipe dishes they brought them over. The pork Gyros and sounvlaki are Greek traditional. if you leave Athens you will only find pork gyros in the other areas of Greece, in the USA I know that you eat gyros with Beef lamb with lettuce and cucumber but for me that is not Gyro that is Dorner kebab.

      @@vassilisioannou5488 that's exactly right.
In US there's very few places with a authentic gyro pork tzatziki etc.
Everything else it's an American gyro that Greeks from Chicago n NYC invented close to doner but not exactly.
