    It was an eventful day at Wings Over Winter! I did my first full stall/spins, Johnson threw his reserve, Mark and I had some rad shenanigans, and a fellow pilot unfortunately was medevaced. I have since heard that his surgery went well and he is in good spirits! Wishing him a speedy recovery!

    Saying as a two-time death survivor and 100+ breaks, shaters, and limbs being ripped off and duck taped back on, and riding 3 wheelers up to four-wheelers all the way down to 600cc and 929cc sportbikes an even more down to Onewheel XR. Those near-death moments when you save your own bacon and go back out after an own the day are the best. You have convinced me to get a two-seater quad powered paraglider. Always wanted to fly, took a few lessons but got too depressed from the cost to fly privately.

    Man really practice stalls because whatever goes wrong, stalls most often help you to not throw your reserve and end your flight comfortable. Living in the alps this is a really important skill because you easily get huge collapses here but also for you flying Acro and Freeride wings, you really have to master fullstalls. Also whenever your wing surges forward, always STOP the surge with brake input. Luckily a Mojo ist stable enough to not get a Huge collapse and Cravatte, Twist and whatever might happen because of the collapse but trust me the free ride or general more agile and higher classified wings, they are on a whole other level.
    Hope you read this and take it in consideration because I really like you to stay safe man!
    Happy landings!

    Accidents happen in any kind of movement activity. Some people fall & break their bones while walking out the front door, usually older people with brittle bones. Sometimes people get struck by falling tree branches. My little sister was killed while she was making a snow angel in our front yard when a car ascending the steep road in front of our house lost traction & slid back down, hopped the curb & hit her head so hard she ended up dying on life support. Its hard for me to write that but its true! Sometimes bad things happen to good people. Its organized Chaos out there! Just try to stay positive, young at heart & have fun while living fully! Cheers & safe flying brothers. Blessings to you, your family, friends & to all your adventures!

    Tucker - The severe stalls and spins in skydiving can be emergency cut away in skydiving at high altitude; a stall is only done just before landing about a foot or two; whereas, a violent spin caused by a "Maywest" (line over canopy) will drop you out of the sky very quickly. The question I have: When you experience a severe stall will the canopy collapse? Also, what are your chances of having a line over the canopy in a severe spin or stall when your trying to recover?

    I think what is required here is some proper landing site control. Having ground signals would quickly communicate the requirement to land , rather than some mixed hand signals. I have many skydives and a simple ground signal was a very visible X. The X indicates that all is good. This can quickly be changed to an L, indicating the requirement to land. Just a thought.

    Ouch! I've broken the same ankle twice and it's no fun. Never had to call an ambulance or helicopter for it before, drove myself to the ER last time. I've never had a compound fracture, but that likely explains the medevac. About the only fun I can think of from my two breaks is explaining to airport security that I've got a half pound of stainless steel in my ankle.

    2 questions:
    (1) Do you feel that your GA experience with stalls helps you in paramotors?
    (2) What is the minimum *effective* altitude for using a reserve chute?

    • @577buttfan
      @577buttfan 6 років тому +10

      People have tossed the laundry as low as 50ft but alot comes into play,how you throw,wind direction,reserve itself...too name a few,I would throw no lower than 300ft if it was me,you drop fast when incidents occur.A full stall will reset the wing many times if your in a bad situation but its very risky if you don't know what your doing..if you full stall you need to slowly bring your hands up too fly back position and dampen the surge when it recovers with brakes again.Remember,even after a reserve opens it takes a few moments for it to actually slow you down.

    • @mauricekoller
      @mauricekoller 6 років тому +5

      (2) 150ft (50m) is about the minimum height at wich a reserve should still help you a lot but this depends heavily on reaction, type of reserve and in what situation you are caught (cravat, autorotation, etc). I'd recommend to throw with at least at 300ft or more. Also it is quite difficult so judge your height without instruments or reference points you know the height of so if in doubt *always throw it* and also if you think you are to low throw it because it will for sure not hurt you more because you have to be in a really fu*ked up situation needing your reserve at that height.

    • @577buttfan
      @577buttfan 6 років тому +4

      Altitude loss happens very quickly so if you are at 1000ft and go to deploy your reserve at 50-80 MPH decent by the time you kill engine,look,grab,pull,then toss into clean air you will be very close to the ground so yes,higher is always better,thats why we like to fly high and practice our maneuvers up above 2000ft when we are first learning,gives you a little more time and time is a good thing.Panic close to ground is very bad thing,don't panic until you hit the ground,always try too fly what you have and deploy if you think you need too.

    • @WoodysGamertag
      @WoodysGamertag 6 років тому +17

      They say you want to throw your reserve by 250 feet. I have personally thrown one at 70 feet over water. I think the wing and chute were downplaning and given more altitude that might have been sorted out. Still, if you need it, throw it. Even at 50' it might do something.

    • @577buttfan
      @577buttfan 6 років тому +1

      As long as the chute is inflated by 50' you might be ok but if you throw it at 50'I would say your gonna hit hard,not enough time for it to inflate.

    Cool that you're punking about with other flyers including Mark. On my first flight day many years ago, the UK Legendary Mark Dann span his paraglider into the hill above us in Wales. Land and Heli-med were deployed, but the bus took him for x-ray on his injured back in the days before MRI & CT scanning.
    He got away with that incident and went on to set the UK distance record for paragliding, from a hill near here more popular with fixed wing unpowered flights.
    Cool that the guy who bust his ankle made a reasonable recovery after surgery.

    OK Tucker Gott, why are there no parafoils with semi-rigid ribbing along leading and trailing edge to prevent this stall impotence?

    • @ollylewin
      @ollylewin 5 років тому +5

      The beauty of a paraglider is the portability of it. When you pack one into its bag its no bigger than a sleeping bag. If you added structural members the portability of it will be compromised, thus removing the beauty of the aircraft. If you make good choices its a non issue to begin with. I've flown some pretty rough days on a paraglider and never had any issues. All down to good choices.

    Yeah I think the rule of thumb is if there's a vehicle with flashing lights on the field LAND! Doesn't matter what kind of vehicle. The other things is.... Flairs work down wind too. Especially when you take a couple of wraps.

      Enjoying The Sun 577-Jersey Customs. Sort of, With 8 flights and zero training then yes acro "close to the ground" will eventually bite you hard but Tucker is experienced and trained and very very cautious. When HE does acro it is NEVER "close to the ground" at least by HIS standards. What may be WAY too close to the ground for YOU might be EASY and farther from the ground than necessary for Tucker Gott. Gett me?

      Phil C That is basically what I said. If Tucker comes from the north and decides to go to his left, and his friend comes from the south and decides to go to his own right, they would crash. North and south are opposite directions, sooo.

    "Don't assume it's going to KEEP going well". Truer words were never spoken. When pilots learn to fly there is a BIG increase in incidents statistically when they think they have "learned it all", when they've actually learned not much of anything.
    ANY compound break is a BIG DEAL. Likely not life threatening, most times, unless you hit big a vein or artery, but still a big deal. I'm heading more and more to that "trike" the more I watch your vids, but I think I will do my own (it's PROBABLY OK, I'm an engineer ;-) ) on one of these rigs, those monster trikes, especially the two seaters, look like a PITA to lug around.

    I was at Endless Foot Drag 17 when Richard Biggerstaff spirialed in and died. It was a tragic event.
    The hard part for me is I was kiting my wing and was packing up and I was watching what turned out to be him in the spiral that killed him. But I could'nt tell because they were a good half mile from me and it was getting late so when they went below the tree line I didn't worry about it until as I was crossing the roadway back to the RV I was watching a pair of blue lights coming down the road into the EFD and the deputy stopped and asked me where the accident was?
    I didn't know but pointed out where Brittons tent was and from there it went crazy! I had Brittons or someones wife call him as he and Kyle O and a few others were on an XC to RTB ASAP and then things went even crazier with all the cops and things.
    I hope to never have to deal with that kind of emergency again as it does take it out of you. I've been at enough of them in my life time!
    I'm adding an article by Jeff Goin. I was parked next to him and he is a wealth of information! This is about spins and why we should know what happens in one and why we should be prepared! I've even watched the USAFs video on preventing spin and high G blackout for when I finally start!

    "there are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are few pilots who are both old and bold." Precticing stalls and spins is a good idea, practicing mid-airs, perhaps not so much... So far as "clickbait titles", I really don't read them, the comments below are a better indication, i.e. "I did my first full stall/spins, Johnson threw his reserve..."
    As for flying over 60 miles of open ocean, I'd think that at least one of those flotation devices with shark repellent and an EPIRB might be a good idea. Lindbrgh managed 3000 miles without them, but...

  • @petergreenwald9639

    Full power on and power off stalls in an airplane went from "holy shit" to "Oh Yeah!" after a few dozen of them. But the best training I ever paid for was in a C150 aerobatic doing spin recovery. Alas, flying airplanes moved out of my budget a few years ago. Retirement is a few years away, then I will buy some crusty old C150 or C172 and fly with pilot friends as much as I can. Funny how a fella can nearly pee himself on a six foot ladder, but feel absolutely comfortable in the most derelict airplane you can rent/buy. But that's me. Keep the ladder, give me a crusty old Cessna.

    I'm always a little shocked to see you PPG guys flying in almost your slippers! Learning to paraglide, I was very early told that ankle support is a big deal, and ever since I have worn hanwag PG boots (believe Woody wears them too - sensible guy!) You guys should really consider better ankle support - maybe could have turned that guy's accident into a sprained ankle rather than the serious injury he ended up with. Love the videos Tucker and mixing in with Mark too - very entertaining! Take care and be safe!

    Probably a huge difference between training while expecting it to happen and something happening at random. When adrenaline catches you off guard its one of those things that makes it hard to think, that's one of the reasons self defense courses focus so much on muscle memory and operating on auto pilot, because its difficult to impossible to think clearly if you panic.

    Hi Tucker, I’m curious as to what you use for communication and how it’s set up? I fly PG and use a 2 meter radio that’s mounted on my flight deck...i don’t really ever let go of my brakes for long to talk since I fly in the mountains in turbulent air and collapses happen so it’s good to be prepared. It doesn’t look like you let go of your brakes to key a mike...any videos on your set up?

    People don't talk about ankle support enough. I broke my ankle/leg on my 10th flight during training. Wasn't even a bad landing just took a knee and with the way the motor came down on my leg snapped it. Took about 5 months before I felt good enough to run around with a motor on my back and landing on it again.

    • @ollylewin

      Ouch man. I've had a few rough landings myself. I did a few downwinders on a paraglider and could feel the shock in my ankles. My second motor flight was a downwinder due to a fast approaching bush lol. Flared early too. Dropped me like rock. Was a bit bruised but luckily not broken. The difference in the different sports is very apparent.
