This picture brought tears to my eyes, Maria. My Soot passed away 3 years ago, but I still miss him. He was a long haired, completely black cat with the most marvelous green eyes. I truly know what it means when a cat picks you as his. He was an magician getting into my house and just moved in lock, stock and barrel! I have wanted to paint him but wasn't sure how to start, but your video will help me. Thank you for sharing with us, Maria.
Absolutely perfect. I enjoyed seeing your color choices to support the "black" cat. I really struggle with that. It has given me some ideas in painting my own black cat. I tended towards more blue and violet hues. Didn't quite work out. I might give it another try.

Black is black but it has a shade to it, so it's important to think of what other colors you see in the light but you were not far from it at all, you did a great choice with colors already😍 blue and violet hues are pretty much what I used💕

this painting is beautiful...........I love it..........I took your cat class and learned so much........I'll always go back to review things you taught............I must say that my kitty did not turn out too well, but your class gave me the inspiration to even attempt to paint her in watercolor..............for me, I will have to practice practice practice, and continue to redo to learn from my mistakes...even my basic sketch directly onto watercolor paper was quite a challenge, ie especially getting the proportions of eye shape, distance between features, etc was very challenging and difficult for me......I find portraits of animals very difficult, as I feel the proportions right from the beginning have to be accurate, even before I touch watercolor paint to the paper..........and then the balance between wet/dry paper and or paint is another huge challenge, as is color, etc...........your teaching has been an inspiration to me.......thank you so much for sharing these videos and giving in depth teaching in your school

Yes.. unfortunately its all in practice 🌷and totally, pencil sketches are very very important when painting animals because this is when proportions have to be accurate so later we don't make mistakes. I would suggest to focus mostly on sketches without even painting.. and once you feel strong about your sketches that will be a good time to start coloring, but at the beginning - one layer, light tones🌷🤗Sketches first, then light layers😃🌸
thank you so much Maria for your advice and inspiration.........the problem that I have in drawing directly on watercolor for a complicated sketch, ie like an animal portrait, is that I feel like I'm damaging the watercolor color with all the erasing, redoing, etc...........I wonder if it might be better to draw the portrait on say tracing, or actually any kind of paper, and when I finally feel it is right, to transfer that by graphite onto the watercolor paper........I find with all painting and drawing, it requires proficiency in many different areas.....ie drawing, learning how to control and mix watercolor paints, etc......all important to get good results
Hi Jasmine, I totally understand, it's very easy to get your watercolor paper dirty from a pencil and erasing. You can try to practice just sketches in a regular book/pad, not a watercolor paper.. but when painting with watercolors, tracing your sketch is also a good idea🌸☺️🌷
thank you Maria..........I think that the next time I attempt an animal portrait, I will first sketch and refine it, before transferring it to watercolor paper......it just takes too many refinements, erasing, trying to perfect, etc. by drawing it directly on watercolor paper........I find this to be true especially for certain subjects, ie animal portraits, portraits of any kind, whereas many other subjects like some landscapes can be just lightly drawn directly on the watercolor paper, and then go right ahead and paint : )

Hi Joyce, thank you. Neutral tint is like a shade of gray, actually picture octopus' ink, it's like a Payne's gray with a hint of purple. I use it for that shade, and often mix it with quin.red, to make it more purple ish. It's a transparent watercolor. if you don't have it, you can simply use another dark shade of gray, like Payne's gray 🙋🏻♀️🌹 My classes can be found at www.patreon.com/mariamorjane but here's more info on my website www.mariamorjane.com ☀️
I thought the thumbnail for this vid was an actual picture at first... so good! Question: any tips on getting the darkness of the pencil line 'just right'? Often I find that I lose the pencil guide too early, or they end up too dark & are seen in final :/
Thank you so much Jonathan 🤗first of all my pencil is just a cheap pencil, nothing special and I draw my lines very lightly, sometimes you can’t see them that well. It’s the first watercolor layer that I also use as my guidance, so I don’t cover the sketch right away, I paint the lines to guide me later on

Thank you so much Prathibha :) I appreciate that. It depends how I want to paint something, for example this cat.. I wanted the fur to be blended with the background and look softer so I let it blend with the background and went over with a wet brush to lift it up and added more water. When I want my strokes to be more defined I will paint wet on dry, especially if I want the colors to be more vibrant.. I decide from the start how Im going to go about it. It depends if I want the background to be smooth too, if yes.. then I will start wet on wet :)

Hi Joyce, thank you. Neutral tint is like a shade of gray, actually picture octopus' ink, it's like a Payne's gray with a hint of purple. I use it for that shade, and often mix it with quin.red, to make it more purple ish. It's a transparent watercolor. if you don't have it, you can simply use another dark shade of gray, like Payne's gray 🙋🏻♀️🌹

I thought the thumbnail for this vid was an actual picture at first... so good! Question: any tips on getting the darkness of the pencil line 'just right'? Often I find that I lose the pencil guide too early, or they end up too dark & are seen in final :/
Thank you so much Jonathan 🤗first of all my pencil is just a cheap pencil, nothing special and I draw my lines very lightly, sometimes you can’t see them that well. It’s the first watercolor layer that I also use as my guidance, so I don’t cover the sketch right away, I paint the lines to guide me later on

Thank you so much Prathibha :) I appreciate that. It depends how I want to paint something, for example this cat.. I wanted the fur to be blended with the background and look softer so I let it blend with the background and went over with a wet brush to lift it up and added more water. When I want my strokes to be more defined I will paint wet on dry, especially if I want the colors to be more vibrant.. I decide from the start how Im going to go about it. It depends if I want the background to be smooth too, if yes.. then I will start wet on wet
