My Gran worked in the munitions factory. Heavy hard work. The sulphur turned the workers skin yellow as it stained it. Thousands a day they were making, crating up and sending out for armament checks, once stamped they were recrated
As he came in a 4 am he almost had a face full of cast iron fryingpan lol! She thought he was a looter! They had been bombed out so she had had to move. Took him hours to find her. Great video you must go back again. No doubt you'll find something to top that!
This is excellent. I used to go looking for old ww2 stuff around the countryside near maidstone as a kid in the 1970s with an old fieldmaster F33 then a cscope vlftr770d . Had the added bonus of being shown where all the AA BATERRIES and barracks where as well as some ammo dumps by my ww2 vet uncle. Gave my whole collection away to a bloke dressed like General patton at the war and peace show to put in his private museum. Again brilliant video.
Might be worth putting the camera on a tripod to free up your hands to dig something like that out again or put the camera on time lapse. Great find, it was in good condition
At last someone who makes a great video, as it is without any stupid dancing and faffing around, no stupid music and no bigging themselves up. Brilliant mate keep them coming, I have subscribed to your channel. Great finds by the way.
We had a couple of 3.7 shell cases eitherside of our fireplace when I was a kid in the 50's. my dad bought them home from the war. Also two Oerlikon cases on the mantlepiece. He was on the ack ack guns.
Simon, what a superb video! I totally enjoy9ed your explanation of the markings... amazing. You outdid yourself on this one. I keep following you. Steve, Phoenix, Arizona, USA
Simon you said you were looking for one.....boy did you deliver.. Excellent find Simon great hunt and excellent video. Your so knowledgeable it's a joy to be with you on your Hunt's, could watch all day .Thanks Si.🤗🤗🤗Janice.
And sent to the lines.. Scary times, often the factories went up, and they had to relocate. Once my Gran ended up in an underground factory, with the bombs dropping above them. After my Grandad came home after Dunkirk, he made her change job, not as easy as that sounds as you were allocated your warwork. Because she was a Nurse, she went into the hospitals. It took 6 weeks for the dye to leave her skin. Grandad was lucky when he came home from Dunkirk., she'd received a letter to say he was lost in Action.
How sad to see all the brick and knowing why its there. What a sad time in history. But you're happy with your find so Cheeds Mate. From S Carolina, USA
My old nan was a bomb girl. She used to work at Payne's firework factory that was turned into bomb factory during the war then back to fireworks factory after.
it wasn't until last summer I learned to dig in the rocky Arkansas soil with a hammer and punch bar. It made such a difference in my speed on projects. haha. I just pound the bar into the rocky ground and pry up big clumps. Much faster than a shovel or hoe.
Well done cracking piece of history 👍the log spilter might not of been for logs , on the railway they used very similar called wedges to move the track to get the fish plate bolts in but either log splitter or wedge still cool 👍
If you still have it, you can clean it up with Brasso. Takes a bit of elbow grease but you'll be shocked how shinny it will get. I would invest in a strong hand brush to prevent further damage next time.
Hello Si Finds. I understand your excitement for Mudlarking. When I go out and walk the river bed after it dries up I get the shakes I'm so excited. Seeing a pristine gravel bed is like heaven. Is there any way to send you some email pics of some of my discoveries?
I hope there was a battery near by to help explain the location of your find. At the beginning you said all the brick rubble was dumped into the Thames. Was the casing part of the debris from the bombing of the buildings?
Great find! I have a 75 mm brass shell casing from WW 1 which was turned into a piece of trench art. It is embossed with the word “Victory” and the date “11-11-11-1918”. That is for the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918. That was the official end of the war to end all wars. silver sniffer3030 Sorry mate. Never been that way. Just get down there and have a look! You never know you might find yourself a good area. Look for old bridges, wharfs or pubs for starters... good luck!
My dad served in the USAF ...Stationed in England right at end of WWII and he was SAC. strategic Air Command...use to load up big bombs on aircraft...I can imagine he’s seen shells big or bigger ...what a rare find Si... bloody amazing after all these years in the mud 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Superb find Si, great to see you showing us another aspect of mudlarking, using your detector. I was surprised at the constant noise from the detector. Did you say that where you were was where they dumped the bombed out buildings?
Sue Taylor Thanks Sue. It hasn’t got a sharp ‘cutting’ edge. It’s the same sharpness as a garden trowel, so great for digging but couldn’t cut naff all
Until the shell goes off! More damage was done by these things that German bombs. 10000+ shells could easily be fired in one night. Half of them used to explode when they hit the ground.

My Mum lived and survived the blitzes of London. She had told me so many sad yet fascinating stories. Funnily, seeing all the bricks, made me tear up.

I gotta be honest, mudlarking the Thames is a bucket list thing for me! Funny that folks say the same about where I live!!
Wow, that 6 pounder is a lovely find Simon, I hadn't seen this video before but well worth the wait, that brass shell is a fantastic find! 😍
Those Bricks are beautiful I could turn them into artistic pathways in the garden. or use some stacked up with a board for shelving.
It's a 6 pounder shell. I've got one from 1938 that sits by my fireplace and holds my fire irons. Good find.
My mom lived in the east end during WWII, would love to have a rummage along the Thames....

the brothers wow! My grandad was in the Royal Tank Regiment. Our fathers and grandfathers were heros! We shall remember them!
I'd better add my dad was a Sergeant mainly on the 40mm Bofors gun. What sights and horrors did they see?
@@thebrothers3971 Doesn't bear thinking about! My grandad never spoke of it...
The length of the splitting wedge also gives you an idea of the size of the logs they were splitting... in this case ... huge!!! Nice find!!!
