How to Clean Silver the Easy Way!

- In this video, you'll learn not only how to clean your silver in a non-abrasive way, but you'll also learn why it works. This video is great for home school groups or kids coming up with ideas for a science project. It's also great for metal detectorists and coin collectors!

One quick question, I have a 1966 Canadien silver dollar,any idea how much it's worth?
I don't know for sure. If an American silver quarter is worth about US$2.40, I'm guessing a silver $1 coin should be worth no less than the silver quarter. I can honestly say I'm not sure about the size comparison, though. I just assume a Canadian dollar coin would be big like the US silver dollar

Oh no you never wanna clean silver like that it devalues taking off the patina tarnish just a word of advice you can make a coin worth hundreds or even thousands make it worth scrap value
Or buy a pot of jewellers silver dip, much easier and non abrasive. I only used it if the coin has an ugly tone or the coin is stained.
except for a shiny effect, you just damaged the coin. Sandpaper would do less damage :D. Now it looks like a painting from Mr Bean after sulphur damaged.

Just use crest toothpaste and a cloth towel , it will be clean and smell minty
Cleaning coins destroys the value of them so if they are old dont clean them or you will be sorry they wont grade them if they have been cleaned.

I own a lot of high value coins, they say never clean them, I am suspect that half or more have been cleaned. How would a buyer know? This is the question.
That's a great question. The only way I think I could tell, if I were a collector, would be through a magnifying glass. I would imagine a cleaned coin will have smoothed over edges vs a mint coin having more defined ridges...I think that's what I would look for. I would think that the rubbing that takes place in cleaning the coin would likely dull those ridges/edges. Thanks!
Being a collector for over 20 plus years. It’s easy to detect to be honest. You can clean it several times over, and be very delicate. However, when looking at the coin with a powerful loupe, the coin shows you spots, that the “cleaner” can’t see.
I have multiple coins that were cleaned 10-15 years earlier and you can still tell it was cleaned at one point. The coin shows spots of tarnishing and dirt, etc....that are naked to the human eye.

No. You'll likely lower your grade and thus lower its value

I use a bowl lined with foil fill hot water, toss in silver and soda
Can clean a bunch of jewelry but,,,.
Don't do hollow silver jewelry, such as bracelet Beads and some things with pin hinges, rings and solid Is ok, no Amber, celluloid, nelio enameled anything damaged by heat,
Some things will be damaged and need polish,
I use metal polish

I was just watching a u tube on copper pennies where they used olive oil, and your finger- thumb, wouldnt that work on silver too???

I just put the foil in a bowl with the baking soda and pour the hot water over the coins. I rub some of the baking soda on the coin like a paste with my fingers or a microfiber cloth comes off like butter. I hope you will not be using that pan again to cook with!

That's a great question. I don't know. Check with your local bank if you're looking for converting the coins to a different currency, otherwise look up coin collectors in the area.

... welp for anyone thinking of cleaning a coin,.... cleaning is the quickest way to make your coin worthless...
BEWARE. IF YOU USE BAKING SODA THE BLACK OXIDATION WILL RETURN. WITH A VENGEANCE. COINS CLEANED LIKE THIS ARE REFERRED TO AS "CLEANED" AND ARE WORTH SIGNIFICANTLY LESS. LEAVE THEM IN ORIGINAL CONDITION.

If you want to use abrasive, why not baking soda? Skip the whole toothpaste step, just rub the coin with damp baking soda and rinse, repeat until shiny. Toss it back into the hot aluminum bath if necessary.

Cleaned or not this coin has no collectors value. The condition of it is crap anyway.

Not one of the best cleaning methods I've seen. This is somewhat of an obsolete way to make silver look better. Ask any jeweler who you are on a first name basis with. He has a little machine thingy that I dropped in a 1996 Silver American Eagle and it came out PRISTINE..!

IF THEY ARE 90 PERCENT SILVER ANCIENT COINS THERE IS NO NEED TO DO THAT.JUST APPLY LITTLE WASHING SOAP AND THEN GIVE A GENTLE RUB AND THEN RUB A PINCH OF BAKING SODA.

Don't clean your coins they won't been worth anything. No coins.
I guess you forget that clean silver and dirty silver are still worth their weight in silver... at worst case, they're worth the face value of the coin, so as long as USD still has value, my shiny silver coin will still be worth something... 😆
