Spears are not very flashy or theatrical weapons when used. There’s not much to their deployment - just thrusting straight forward with occasional oblique cuts. But rest assured, these things were MUCH more dangerous to fight against than swords or axes, even maces. They were simply constructed and simply used, which is why they were so deadly. They were cheap and easy to make compared to swords, too. So you could arm and train MANY soldiers with these weapons - and training wouldn’t take very long either, since the spear is so easy to use at its baseline. Couple the deadliness in simplicity of spears with their typically MUCH superior reach and speed of recovery in striking over the sword, the axe, the hammer, or the mace, and you’ve got the weapon platform that both outdated AND outlived the sword in use on ANY battlefield, including MODERN ones (we still use bayonets in actual combat; whereas swords are never used except purely as ceremonial uniform decorations.)
So don’t let that unimpressive display of Sōjutsu make you think that’s all there is to the Yari. You’re not gonna watch any Sōjutsu demonstration and think, “Oh, that LOOKS SO COOL AND FLASHY AND STYLISH!” It’s NEVER gonna be any of those things. But a trained Samurai with a Yari is still gonna be able to skewer your entire body until its no longer recognizable; and watching his performance as he does so will probably make people yawn. Cause there’s nothing to killing the absolute FUCK out of a man with a spear in the realm of flashy showmanship... just the rapid and insanely-hard-to-counter delivery of deep mortal wounds that CAN’T be stitched closed and will guarantee you a slow and agonizing death (as more of your fellow warriors fall on top of you and start slowly dying on you too.)
Pop culture doesn’t show enough love to the spear; which has been the MAIN-main weapon of the human race for at LEAST hundreds of thousands of years, and it’s been so for a time-honored and time-tested reason. Because it just WORKS so damn well. It’s just not as pretty and awe inspiring to watch in action as the sword, mace, axe, etc.
Fun Fact: chimpanzees (our closest genetic relative, and model for physical anthropological study) ALSO fashion and hunt with spears. They take sticks, then use their teeth to grind a point into the stick, then spear fish into old withered out tree trunks to get at the bush babies sleeping in there. So it’s pretty insanely cool to know that it’s HIGHLY possible our pre-human ancestor species were also using these insanely simple yet insanely EFFECTIVE tools that we now call the Spear.

These vids are awesome, my only critique would be: you guys should use ballistic gel anatomically correct targets with historically correct armour on(preferably the armour of common enemies the weapon would have faced). That way we could see realistic damage of the weapons. Hollow, soft foam targets with plastic bags full of fake blood aren't good representations.

People like Metatron kind of go overboard and say "contrary to popular belief samurai loves guns"
Which yeah they did and they wouldn't have an issue using them but they mostly preferred spears even when guns became common place.
He even goes on to say that the Oda destroyed the Takeda at Nagashino with guns.
The guns did do a lot of damage and many high ranking generals were shot dead in the initial charge.
But that battle lasted 8 hours and was mostly won with steel and numbers of more than double of that of the Takeda

The one thing I don't get about Japanese polearms is the lack of blunt striking surfaces. It doesn't need to be a fully developped axe or hammer, but any tough protrusion that doesn't penetrate too deep.
There are Yaris with side blades, that would do a great job for hooking or attacking enemies behind shields.

People died from less, but some survived crazy injuries. If the victim doesn't die of (internal) bloodloss, then the only big killer is inflammation. Inflammation can come from outside dirt, bone fragments or feces from punctured intestines. So, it really depends where it hits and how clean the wound remains.

Anyone that ever looks up Japanese ancient weapons online and exposed to the international cultural exchange of others entertainment media from map will tell you there are more fascinating ones there. There jimonji spear was literally something that resembled a trident, except the side points were perpendicular. Then there is the spear/saber hybrids. The naginata is a pole arm with a curved single saber like blade.
