The Stg44 does not have an M16 style mag release. The M16 has an Stg44 style mag release.

Kevin C of course they are remade into better weapons, like the AK-47, it’s been replaced with a lot of newer AK brand weapons, the M-16 is used a lot now, however the M2 Browning started being made in the early 1900s and is still being used today on the battlefield, usually it takes 3 people to hold it, 1 for ammo cause many boxes of 50. Caliber ammo is very difficult to carry with the gun, 1 carries the stock, barrel, and the tripod, the last guy carries some ammo and the rest of the gun assembly

An old man told me a few years ago something interesting about the magazine and the STG44 in general.
As a litte boy he worked in the office of Haenel (the developer of the StG44). They were fully aware about the problem with the wiggling magazine, but they decided not to fix it, because they thought it would help to unstick the cartridges in the cold russian winter. Germany had no big experience with long magazines.

The sturmgewehr is my all time favorite assault rifle. Definitely at the top of my dream list. It is scary how advanced germany's military was in WW2. small arms, LMG's, tanks, missile technology and jet engine technology.

Great grandfather took home a Kar98 bolt action from the beaches of Normandy, and it still works. German engineering.

For example: an Ak variant weighs 8.5, and the Mosin-Nagant 91/30 weighs 9.5

Weight was certainly a factor but the design of the recoil system was also part of that. The action is allowed to travel 3.5x the overall length of the cartridge. This allows the bolt carrier to run out on the recoil springs without striking the stop at the back of the buttstock.
Even in semi-auto the recoil impulse feels like nothing else, but sounds similar to the AR15.

I'm honestly surprised the former Allied powers didn't just straight up copy the entire design. It was way ahead of its time, would have given the West a comparable rifle to the Soviets almost immediately, and it really only needed some minor detailing work. National pride getting in the way of good weapons as usual!
Zenith, the U.S. and NATO, having won the war with 1930s technology small arms, were late to jump on the assault rifle bandwagon. Britain didn't declare the Lee-Enfield bolt-action obsolete until, get this - the 1990's! The U.S. jumped somewhat sooner, with the 1960s M16. Britain's SA80 bull-pup came into service in the 1980s. You are right about national pride; quality is quality, regardless of nation or origin.

@@GeorgiaBoy1961 You do realise that the British had the 7.62mm FN FAL as their service rifle by 1954 (L1A1 SLR), before the Americans had the M16? The British made the 'jump' to a modern polymer body self loading rifle a decade before the United States.
The Lee-Enfield was kept in service only as a 7.62 sniper/marksman's rifle after the L1A1 was widely adopted. .

Great video. In the Marine Corps, using the M16A1, we never loaded more than 28 rounds in a 30 round mag for exactly the reasons you mentioned. And these were new magazines, but this is what we were taught in OCS/TBS. You fill it up with 30 and it jams every time.

Such an revolutionary platform. I attended a machine gun shoot once and waited over an hour to run the stg44 and it didn't disappoint. Unbelievable firearm...especially for its age. Ran 4 mags through it at a bus and made it look like swiss cheese.The reciprocating charging handle makes it fedl very controllable and the rate of fire is just about perfect A dream list rifle.

The Fedorov was used in the same way the Chauchat was. A crew-served automatic rifle isn't really an assault rifle like the MP43/StG44. The StG was THE FIRST in its class.
That info is incorrect I believe, I can't remember where I found it, but there was a video (after WW1 I assume) which showed it being used in bursts kind of like a modern AR.
You're wrong. Fedorov is an individual weapon.
It was used in exactly the same way as any modern assault rifle. The only difference was in the use of a rifle cartridge. But in this direction, Fedorov outlined the meaning of the modern assault rifle. He used a weaker Japanese cartridge, not a more powerful Russian one.
The Germans did absolutely everything the same: they weakened the cartridge and added automatic fire. The difference between these weapons is only in age and the Russian Revolution that prevented Fedorov. And the meaning and purpose of these rifles is absolutely the same.
The rifle you claim at 0:36 to be "The 1st Assault rifle" (the FEDEROV) isn't shooting to reduced power rifle cartridge - so it is NOT an assault rifle. It's just a full auto, box fed battle rifle shooting a full rifle caliber (6.5 x 50) weapon like the FG42 or the venerable BAR did.
Therefore title of 1st Assault gun still goes to the STG!! The Innovation was the reduced rifle round!!!
I believe there were some prototype intermediate full auto rifles. But they were just obscure prototypes. STG44s were produced over 400 thousand, the name assault rifle comes from here. The looks and the controls come from here and the tactics and the concept comes from here. For all purposes this was the first assault rifle, even though some prototypes existed before it.

And there's a reason that the vast majority of modern iron sights use a rear peep sight like the M1 and not a forward mounted V notch like the StG44 -- the peep sight is a better setup. You get a longer sight radius, it's easier to pickup quickly, and it's more precise. It's a better system.

That was sarcasm, in case you didn't get it. You solve the field of view problem by shooting with both eyes open, which is the correct way, BTW. Some sights also have a larger aperture for general use, and a smaller one for precision shots. If you use them PROPERLY, peep sights are better.
Really? I never had the slightest bit of problem with a peep sight, or shooting with both eyes open when I was shooting the M16A2, or the M4 as an infantryman in the army. I was in before they started putting optical sights on those things. Yes the rear aperture will be unfocused. You can still center the front post in it with no problem, and have a good field of view -- and I can do it, despite shooting right-handed and being left eye dominant.
I give this video a thumb up not just because of your detailed presentation but the video & angle is also a top notch, well done.
The comparisons to other guns is actually really helpful in my opinion. Both to give you a better idea and to explain how the Stg changed firearms history.
Finally, someone remembers the Federov Avtomat.
Also, there was the Winchester 1907, which the French modified to be selective fire in WW1. They fired a .351 WSL cartridge which was very similar to 7.62x39, and so they were unambiguously assault rifles. The French loved those rifles and bought every one they could get their hands on, but given the manufacturing capabilities of the time, Winchester just couldn't make very many.
This has always been one of my favourite guns. It just blows my mind how they did not see the obvious flaw of the front grip overheating. That seems like a small thing but might've had a major impact on the battle effectiveness of the gun, because gripping from the magazine isn't nearly as good, especially for your average soldier.
I think if this weapon had been developed earlier in the war, the designers would have incorporated a wooden fore stock.

I would disagree, the AK has a similar long stroke gas piston that of the STG and people always talk about the M16 recoil spring and how is similar well the AK also has a spring that works in a similar fashion and the similarities in the disassembly process,well the AK46 also had a similar disassembly, and people say that the AK only got the looks of the STG, well my response to that is, coincidence?. My point here is that the STG has influenced most if not all assault rifles including the AK but that doesn't mean that the STG didn't had any external influences on its own design either, I'm sure it did.

I saw this Gun being used by Brad Pitt in the movie "Fury", he was playing an American Tank Commander in the film but seeing as how he opted to use this gun just proves how awesome it is.

Its crazy that 80 years later and soldiers are still armed with what is basically the same weapon. WW2 soldiers probably imagined laser weapons with how fast weapons were advancing from the beginning of the twentieth century through WW2.

The Fedorov was a battle rifle, not an assault rifle. Assault rifles use intermediate cartridges, battle rifles don't. So no, the STG was in fact the first assault rifle.
Some firearms historians - such as Tim Mullin, former U.S. Army infantryman and U.S. Marshall - consider the American M-1 Carbine, especially in its fully-automatic M-2 variant, as the first assault rifle. Whether one believes that probably revolves around whether one considers its pistol-derived .30 Carbine cartridge as a true intermediate or not. If memory serves, Larry Vickers himself calls the M-1 Carbine the world's first PDW - personal defense weapon. Obviously, the MP44 is the prototypical assault rifle from which all the modern days designs trace their heritage.

Let me add my 50cents. One of the cool features of STG44 as an assault rifle was a use of innovatinve Kurz 7.92×33mm cartridge - with just the right impact force for a long range/low recoil. Fedorov proposed the same concept in 1913 (!) with even cooler 6.5mm small brass cartridge, but it was too innovative for the time, alas. These days many modern weapon makers say that 6.5mm Grendel are ideal size for future ARifles.
Your review by far is the best I have ever seen on the STG 44 anywhere. What an excellent review on this historic firearm.

Early 20th century, and at the end of 19th, Germans were weapon engineers overmasters . Gewehr/K98 , Walther PP, Stg 44, MP18 , MP40, MG 42, Luger P08 , V2 rocket .... Unmatched geniuses

m16 has more things in common.... like the mag release, magwell, long recoil spring, slightly the position of the safety.... the only thing the ak has in common with the stg is the stamped construction and the sights. and the sights were kinda standard stuff. the cartridge you also could argue is similar, but yet different.

Nope the STG44 was the first assault rifle, not the Federov. The assault rifle concept didn't even exist when the Federov was made, therefore not an assault rifle. The assault rifle concept was introduced along with the STG44. The Federov wasn't even used in the assault rifle role, it was used as a support weapon.
Firearms historian-writer Tim Mullin, former U.S. Army infantryman and career U.S. Marshall, makes the case for the M-2 variant of the M-1 Carbine as the first mass-produced assault rifle. The M-1 fulfills the design criteria for a true assault rifle - if you are willing to call its pistol-derived .30-Carbine cartridge a true intermediate. It is of short overall length and weight, and has a short barrel. In its M-2 variant, it is capable of select-fire operation as well as semiautomatic use. Its optimal range is 0-300 yards (the maximum for its rear sight elevation is 300 yards). It is fed from a high-capacity box-style magazine. Since its cartridge is not as powerful as a full-power, full-bore center-fire rifle cartridge, it is easy to control and has modest recoil. The M-1/M-2 beat the MP44 into action by arriving on the battlefield in significant numbers in 1942. The weapon went on to be the most-produced U.S. small arm of the war. The ribeyrolles 1918 was the first assault rifle, it fits all qualifications for one. It was ahead of it's time. Doesnt matter if military doctrine supported it, it's still the first.

+Firmus Piett The "AK 47" is no longer in use by any military, the AK platform in general is. The original AK 47 was phased out after only two years and replaced with the AKM, which is what makes up most of the guns now referred to as the "AK 47". The original AK wasn't even called the AK47, it was just the Avtomat Kalashnikova, the 47 came later to distinguish it from other models.
Nowadays, most militaries don't even use the AKM. Russia switched to the AK-74 in the 1970s, and are in the process of now switching to the AK-103 and AN-94.

The stg44 is still in use in Libanon in serbia and the german Army has about 300,000 STG 44 from the East German Army Munition Kaliber 7,92 × 33 mm short fromr Fabrik Prvi Partizan in Užice (Serbien) .The AK47 is from Hugo Schmeisser not from Michail Timofejewitsch Kalaschnikow the Russian can´t say after WW2 look our new weapon designt by a German.

You're right but that's way too technical, the only thing you'd have to do is listen to it several times. It's not that hard. I'm not one who runs around and corrects people's pronounciation but when you're so in love with an assault rifle you might as well pronounce it correctly.

Not really. The Germans' problem was their lack of operational and strategic capability. The Allies would have captured some, tested them, and come up with their own copy.
I think the Germans over engineered weapons like the STG 44. They could not field enough of them to make a significant difference late in the war. With that being said, I would have to agree that if they started out with an "Assault rifle" to begin with, there would have probably been a different outcome in the war. I still think in the end the Axis powers would have lost, but it would have most likely extended the length of the war beyond 1945, without using an atomic bomb that is.
troopcom I disagree concerning the STG-44. The Luger, yes, but the STG-44 could be easily mass produced, however, due to it's introduction very late in the war(1943) and Hitler's internal politics which led to more delay coupled with the Nazi's dwindling resources and factories for production the writing was on the wall.

The STG43/44 was the basis for the Kalashnikov. The Russians were so impressed that they manufactured cartridges for captured 43/44's.

@@thewaterdrop123 That's more a matter of cost and availability than legality, although there's bureaucratic 'red tape' wrapped around fully automatic weapons, the $200 tax is hardly the prohibitive titan it was originally intended to be.

I think every assault rifle should have the same rate of fire as this gun. It just seems like the perfect zone for accuracy and rounds down range.
I have an H&K model 93. Surprisingly it shares many features of this weapon.
The HK G3 is a direct evolution of the STG series. After the war, Germany wasn't allowed to make rifles, so the engineers went to Spain and Portugal to produce the Cetme and G3. They are now made in the US by PTR in South Carolina from the original HK jigs. Great guns!
I shot this gun at one of Larry's AK classes, became my dream gun instantly. Larry, find someone to do a reproduction!
