I visited Ireland with my late father a few years ago. Michael Collins was one of Dad's personal heroes, so I took Dad to visit Michael Collins' grave at Glasnevin on our last day in Ireland. I'll never forget the way Dad wept, he was so overcome with emotion. The story of Michael Collins is a true Irish tragedy, and all I could think at the time standing there in front of his grave was that he was the same age when he died as I was at the time (early 30s). So sad.
Av been to glasnevin and arbour hill all Ireland most courageous soldiers are buried in both plots a seen Pearse cell in killmaneim jail were all the leadership were executed av been to the spot they stood at 90 years before they were killed rest in peace our 16 leadership the last sir Rodger was executed by the British in England the last of our leaders may god bless our patriot dead thee who dies for Erin lives on in the hearts and minds of all true republicans wherever they may be from Glasgow🇮🇪32

May God rest you Michael and I will always love you . I was born in the North of Ireland and our convent school didn't speak about you ever but , I read about my Irish history when I left school. I read about my Irish history in 1968 when I was 18 and lived in Derry during the'Troubles ' I am 71 yrs old now and just wished that you had lived .God rest your soul and please pray for us now and the rotten Irish Government that's i place now .

I have Loved Johnny Mc Evoy, Since I was very young. Thank you Johnny. He sang at my brothers 70 th birthday. Love ya Johnny. Great Irish singer, and a great man.
There was, and never will be, another Michael Collins! How I wish he had lived! When I was a kid I wrote a poem to Michael that started off with the plea, "Michael, please don't go to Cork". Aaaah! Irish history and heroes!! Michael has certainly always been mine! And isn't John McEvoy quite the insightful songwriter! Great song, great singer!
This is such a beautiful song and Johnny's voice is glorious. One thing about this pandemic is how many beautiful songs I am listening to. Music is indeed the great common denominator.
i was born in england but will always claim to be Irish, mum was from Bantry west cork and dad from Limerick, i only have Irish blood running through my veins, i will stand for Irelands call every time

I could listen to Johnny!, all day. However , I was a teen in those years, and sometimes, now, his songs make me sad, and homesick, for those days. That’s a compliment, Johnny, my whole family loves you. ❤️🇮🇪🌹
The greatest man Ireland ever had and there will be none close to him we will ever see again. A courageous gentleman with a love for his Ireland, its people, sent to sign his death warrant by the hard-nosed, gutless De Valera, who sold his own out.
He signed to save lives as if he hadn't the British forces threatened to use the newly formed RAF ro drop mustard gas on irish civilians but he knew he was signing his death warrant.
Ireland has not and never will see a man like Michael Collins again in it's history. In the words of the late great Dan Breen, Tipperay who was one of Collins crew. What a leader and Dan Breen said he would gladly give his life any day for Collins. Dr Valera is in he'll hopefully. R I P. M.C
Thank you for posting this vid and thanks to Johnny McEvoy for this song. Love you, Mick. R.I.P. Can't think of all the things you'd have achieved if you lived long enough.

On a far off August day, cold young men in ambush lay
On a roadside on a hill where flowers grow
So much hate for one so young, who was right and who was wrong
Though a thousand years may pass we’ll never know
CHORUS
Candles dripping blood, they placed beside your shoulders
Rosary beads like teardrops on your fingers
Friends and comrades standin by, in their grief they wonder why
Michael in our hour of need you had to go
And when evening twilight came, gentle fell the August rain
Oh but you lay still and silent on the ground
As we hung our heads in prayer, in our sorrow and dispare
We wondered was it friend or foe who shot you down
Chorus
Now the flame that you held high, when you called out to the sky
To end this senseless killing and this shame
Has now passed to other hands and is carried through the land
By some not fit to even speak your name

Michael Collins was a true hero and although he knew he was signing his own death warrant he did it to save civilians.
I can't confirm but the rumour was that the British said if he didn't sign they would use the RAF to drop mustard gas bombs on civilians.
He was a brave and courageous man who scrificed himself for Ireland.
