Little heartbreaking details : In Brok's funeral when Kratos try to console Sindri, Sindri pushes his away, look at him with anger, provokes him even with a small step towards Kratos, his previous fear of Kratos now gone. Then after only a moment, the anger recedes from his eyes and they get empty and sad again before he walks away silently without looking at anyone or anything. I see it as Sindri knowing that his anger towards Kratos and Atreus is misguided but having no other way to deal with his grief. Love how the acting can convey so much emotions and character.
In a way, the ultimate isult to Brøk's death was what Sindri did to save his life... for being unable to let Brøk go, he doomed his brother to oblivion; and Sindri knows this, deep in his heart. No matter how many fingers he points, no matter how many Odins he kills, he will always be the one who doomed his brother.
FatBrett failed to mention a MASSIVE aspect to Sindri's agony - It's all self-inflicted. Brok was fated to die, and did in fact die earlier at the forge. Sindri, in grief traveled to the Lake of Souls in Alfheim to retrieve his brother's soul. He shares with Atreius that upon entering the lake, he could feel the souls clinging to him, climbing up upon him. Due to this, he was rushed and was only able to collect three of Brok's four soul parts - with the missing part being the 'homing' part. The one that allows his soul to find its way back to Alfheim. So, what this means, is that when Brok died at the hands of Odin, because of Sindri's direct meddling with fate - Brok is denied an afterlife and is instead forced to suffer oblivion due to now having an incomplete soul. This is really what breaks Sindri, is not so much that Brok is dead - is that Brok is annihilated. Additionally, after Sindri had resurrected his brother, they were essentially shunned by their people. So, up until this point, they were an island. Now, Sindri has no brother, and unless the Dwarves accept him back, he has no people. Sindri is now a lost soul, wandering the realms in anguish. I'll be honest, it's so different from storylines than you usually see - it's very well done, despite how crushing it is. It feels so much more authentic leaving it without "resolution", because let's be honest - not all loss like this is every truly resolved.
So basicly if he waited with hes brothers resurection then this would have never have happended... Also the dwarfes where right in that aspect do not bring back the dead... I mean he is sole responseble for hes brothers soul suffers in oblivion cause hes brothers soul is incomplete... If anything he have no right to blame others for hes own stupidity.... I do not envy that man or anything. I hope he gets the same treatment than.
@@sebulller He is the reason Brok has no afterlife, but is not the reason Brok is dead right now and has every right to feel anger towards others. As was explained in the video Kratos and Atreus while maybe not willingly, took advantage of him. Their "quest" to which Sindri merely aided and gave hospitality only ended up getting his own brother killed based on reckless decision to invite a mysterious person such as Tyr into their home. Through the first and second game we are told stories of Odin's trickery and deception, and someone as experienced as Kratos or as clever as Mimir should have at the very least been skeptical. That being said Sindri's decision to rescue Brok from the lake of souls was also a reckless decision, but in that case Sindri would have blinded by grief. My point is that while yes Sindri should blame himself, he still has everyright to feel used and robbed in this situation.
What I don't understand is that first Brok was dead, Sindri only delayed the inevitable by bringing him back to life. And that moment came unfortunately when Odin killed him... but blaming Atreus and Kratos for that is unfair, what were they supposed to do ? it's thanks to them that all the kingdoms are saved, Tyr was a mistake but no one saw it coming, but it's all this process that allowed the destruction of Asgard. In the end he brought this pain upon himself, he should have grieved before. I understand that it's hard to mourn, but it's not an excuse for what he did, because in the end because of his egoism he totally destroyed his friend's soul... and now instead of assuming his responsibilities he blames everyone, without thinking that it can hurt his friends as well, and I hated him in the end for that. Even after Atreus and Kratos tried to apologize but he doesn't care. I understood at first but now he's just fucking annoying ! He can just go fuck himself.
One thing of note: We hear the characters say often that vengeance doesn't bring you peace, but we get to see it firsthand with Sindri. He won, he killed Oden and avenged his brother, but he's still am emotional wreck...
Freya herself said that maybe it isn't peace that she wants (regarding killing Kratos over Baldur). Peace may not be the point. But Sindri isn't removed enough from seeing Brok die to actually process what happened.

The “what gets bigger the more you take away” riddle had such a poignant payoff. At first it just seemed like something silly the Mirmir was overthinking, but to bring it back in the end. Glorious.
That legit blasted me when it happened, couldn't help but think how much worse it woulda been if I solved the riddle myself instead of trusting the story to naturally havea a payoff with it, thinking it'll just be something light hearted later, damnba
Glorious in a sense, but also devastating. I was completely immersed in the story and feeling so much for Sindri. Just as I had begun to feel some hope for him, this answer came up.
I really thought the answer would be something like pubic hair or such, since Brok loves to talk profanity. I really thought it would be a joke, but damn, when mimir says it during the funeral, kinda broke me

Sindri did not deserve this but I was happy to see him change. Previously a people pleaser and a nice guy type, he now puts himself and his feelings first, which is honestly a completely normal response to such grief. It would be weird if Sindri stayed the same after what happened.
So true. Kratos and freya will move on shack up atreus will move on as well but sindri would still have lost it all. There’s no sweet victory for him. Victory came at a price. A price it seems only he and maybe freya paid. After everything he gave so freely in the end he lost it all. It’s so unfair and so harsh. But again kratos said there are consequences for killing a god
Yeah as sad as that was, it showed he has growth. That builds character. For people that have lost a loved one, the worst thing you can do is linger on it because their ghost haunts your steps. Letting go is the first step to healing. It's a painful path its one we ALL have to take eventually.

Able to hear their voices. The single largest source of healing for my spirit was hearing their laughter again. You don't always have to let go. I will bring their happiness with me, wherever I go.
I’d like to give a bunch of credit to Sindri’s voice actor for how much more impactful he made Sindri’s anger. Throughout this whole game, I often forgot that these characters had voice actors and weren’t just talking themselves. Sindri’s emotions felt so real.
Yea exactly! Sindri was also never ever rude to us too. So it’s a bit of a shocking feeling when Sindri is just bad-mouthing Atreus and anyone really. I also found it funny because it’s like Atreus is getting his from GOW 4 where he was a little shit to Sindri 😂
I always get choked up when Mimir finally solves the riddle at Brok’s funeral. To think something so minute and easily forgettable could represent so much about Brok’s relationship with everyone. Masterful writing
When I first heard the riddle I knew the answer, so I was mostly laughing at all the attenpts at solving it. I had completely forgotten it. The moment Mimir says the answer I burst into tears, realizing what the writers had done. It was such a brilliant use of a dumb riddle and I still feel it to this day

One more thing to add: When Sindri revived Brok he wasn't able to retrieve all parts of his soul. Throughout both games Brok was missing one of his four soul parts. In one of the travel dialogues Mimir mentions that this effectively denies Brok an afterlife in the Light of Alfheim. So I believe this just adds to the incredible amount of pain and grief Sindri experiences. For once in his life he took something for himself in reviving Brok so he wouldn't have to be alone. And this one selfish act of his,the only selfish act of Sindri's we see in both games, has denied his own brother, whom he loved from the bottom of his heart, the ability to really move on in death. That is what Sindri means when he says: "You want sorry? This is what sorry looks like." He has to live with the fact that the only selfish act in his life, has taken something from the person he loves most in life. And no matter how hard he tries, no matter the lenghts he would go to, he can not give Brok an afterlife. Now THAT would really break anyone, no matter how tough. I honestly just wanna give him a hug. Edit: Holy mother this blew up One thing I would like to clarify about Sindri's "You want sorry?" quote. I think it is more than his guilt here. Part of him certainly feels a tremdous amount of anger towards Atreus and Kratos. For "exploiting" him, in his mind. For taking everything he did for them for granted and never acknowledging his contributions. However, the other part of this anger is certainly projected onto them. Like yes they brought Odin to his home, but he invited him in himself. And it was him who would not allow Brok to pass on, rather deciding to revive him and unwittingly deny him an afterlife in the process. I believe that is what is mostly "eating at him" as he says when he confides in Atreus about the matter. Yes he feels guilty about not telling Brok that he died before, but the knowledge that his borther no longer has a chance at an afterlife is what really feeds his guilt. I believe the person he is angry with the most is still himself.

If you want to argue that Sindri was a better friend to Atreus than Atreus was to him, you may have a point. Perfect explanation and I never thought about the meaning of this is what sorry looks like in that light. Makes you really feel horrible for Sindri although I hope he finds a way to make up with them and move forward.
His obsession with cleaning was probably due to his trauma at the Lake of Souls. In his own words, he could still feel the souls trying to grab him, claw at him, and felt his skin writhing. He tried scratching himself raw to the point of passing out. So I think that’s one of the main reasons he is so adverse to filth. Please note I say “one of” the main reasons.
Sindri is Izanami. He goes to the underworld to save the soul of a loved one, he fails to fully bring them back and develops a need to clean himself due to their time in the underworld. Izanami cleans his eyes and nose and out come 3 pieces, Tsukuyomi, Amateratsu, and Susano’o, Sindri manages to take 3/4ths of Brok’s soul. Maybe in a future game we will help Sindri fight a demonic Izanagi to recover Broks soul

Something that I saw when Sindri was telling Kratos and Atreus how much he hatdd them was that they kept taking from him with no second thought, when really, Sindri was giving. Kratos and Atreus never asked to live at Sindri's house, they never asked for new upgrades, they never asked for the brothers' most prized possession to make a weapon out of, he gave them those ideas by offering. He is so devistated by his brother's death that he can't let himself take accountability for it. It's a very realistic take of someone going through extreme loss. They can either blame no one but themselves or blame everyone but themselves
at the same time, while he surely thought nothing of it all at the time (except for draupnir that he was reluctant to give), once it came time for him to assign blame to everyone around as a way to grieve... he must have told himself "look at everything i gave them; what have they ever given me in return apart from trouble?" that added to the fact his whole life's story is him being in service of someone else, and getting bitten in the ass as a consequence of it. Worked with odin? Ended up horribly. Worked on the leviathan axe to counteract Odin? Thats how brok died for the first time. Help Kratos? He loses his brother again, this time for good and he doesnt even get an afterlife. At this point he's not just done with Kratos, Atreus or the gods: he is done helping anyone, as this never brought him anything else than misery in the end.

Don't pretend that giving can't be toxic too - there are plenty of people in the world who give out a lot with the sole motivation of bringing it up at a later date as a debt that needs repaying. Plus, think about it from Kratos' side. Would Sindri have ever been an ally if every time something was offered, Kratos said "I refuse to take this. I will not be in your debt!"? Yeah, I agree. I don't think Sindri is going to get the kind of redemption story that Freya did in this game. I suspect he's going to go pretty dark. The scenario I imagine in the next game is that they will have no choice but to turn to Sindri for one more favor. And the price he'll exact is for them to find the missing piece of Brok's soul, an impossible task. But Atreus has skill with soul magic, and may be able to do it somehow. We'll see.

@@DieEineMieze There's no hard-fast writing rule that says just because something has been declared impossible, it can't happen, especially in fantasy. Some of the greatest plot turns involve things declared impossible in act one accomplished by the end of act three. Writers routinely set up impossible challenges for their characters. I hear writers talk about this all the time, deliberately writing themselves into a corner. After all, if the writer can't think of an obvious solution, neither can the audience. And it forces the writer to push themselves creatively. Of course, I've found this practice tends to lead to more cheap, cheating story solutions than brilliant ones. But I have faith in the GoT writers that if they decide to pursue this plot direction, they'll do it well, make it work.
Another neat thing about the funeral is that for the first time, Sindri challenges Kratos' space. Before, Kratos would aggressively exist and Sindri would quickly get out of the way.
@@fatbrett In that same scene, he also relented. It's clear that he recognized the look Kratos gave him was not one of anger, but sorrow. And he decided to not say anything about it since it's already known to Kratos exactly what Sindri is going to say.
At this point what else can he lose. I bet he’d be content with at least getting one good punch in satisfaction before kratos ultimately either kills him, beats him
Two things I want to add: I think Sindri getting to formally say goodbye to his brother, is the first step in filling the hole. We never saw Freya or Kratos get the opportunity, and it led them to do horrible things, but Sindri did And a difference between Sindri and Kratos and Freya, is that at the funeral we see that his eyes aren't filled with hate, or anger, just pain
The reason that the hate isn't there is because he got his vengeance. He killed Odin for good and he did so at no cost to any innocents. Kratos couldn't be at peace while Zeus or the other Greek gods were still alive, but by killing them, he also wiped out nearly his entire homeland! So he's riddled with guilt, whereas Sindri can have some relative peace knowing that his brother's murderer is truly gone.

But the thing about vengeance once you have achieved it, there is nothing else left to do, only a hollowness remains which is filled with grief. Reminds me of Inigo Montoya's line from the Princess Bride, "I have been in the revenge business so long, now that it's over, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life."

Forgive what though really, brok was killed by odin who fooled everyone in disguise as tyr, they made mjolnir and it gave them an awful name and they fell out over it for many years, artreus and kratos brought them back together again and they both willingly helped them fight against odin, brok was a casuality of war that they both joined, sindri is rightfully mad but wrongfully directed but that's just great story telling because it reflects real life, sindri blaming them because he can't deal with broks death which many people also do because anger is the easiest emotion to have, the funeral was him finally moving on from anger into depression, I don't think they will continue his story outright as a side character but I'd love to see him as an Easter egg in which ever pantheon they move to next
@@richmahogany21 Thats not really the point. The point is that Sindri gave, gave, and gave. Gave them his treasures, his love, his home, his skills, and now his brother and never retrieved anything in return. The devs literally have said sindris story was sort of based off the giving tree.

@@richmahogany21 Um, i think his anger was very justified and saying it wasn't directed properly just dismisses the whole lesson being taught. The whole point of that Sindri arch is to teach Artreus about Intent < Impact. His consequences are the reality of his actions whether he intended to harm or not. He fucked up. And just like Kratos, he will have to live with the consequences of taking his dearest friend's kindness for granted. It's up to Sindri to decide when or even IF he wants to forgive them and up to Artreus to learn from his mistake instead of letting himself stagnate emotionally like Kratos did. Sometimes you don't earn someone's forgiveness but that doesn't mean you let it stop you from growing, learning, and feeling. It's pretty much the lesson Kratos had to learn in GoW4 but at a comparatively smaller scale.
One of the smaller details I really appreciate is how in God of War Sindri was basically a germaphobe who'd basically throw up on the sight of germs. Then in Ragnarok traces of that are still there because he still wears the giant gloves and all that. Then after Brok's death you see him take off the gloves and get all dirty. I think that's a really subtle yet amazing way they show how far Sindri fell and how much Brok meant to him. He's literally starting to lose himself in the grief and pain.
seeing him just not care about anything anymore was really heartbreaking the first time through and even now i can feel how broken Sindri has become, they did a really good job trying to make me cry in the game, almost succeeded a few times
Also another fun fact about Sindri and any general persons grief psychologically, is that those left to grieve will actively take on the traits of their late relative as a means of "keeping them alive". So not only is it a means of showing how far hes fallen, its also written in a way that he is grieving in a very realistic way.

Not even just the idea of him going "invisible" and striking you, the guy litterly is the most talented dwarf in the world the man can make some very powerfull weapons, and I can only assume that later on the man will be very skilled in fighting,
I can’t believe I missed him literally “taking the gloves off”. I was so absorbed with Sindri’s face and voice acting that I just didn’t look at his hands. Such a heartbreaking arc for the character, and so well brought to life by the actor and animators. If Sindri becomes an enemy in the next game it will truly be awful in every sense
I believe it was implied that his germaphobe nature was due to the trauma of all the souls in the Lake of Souls crawling over him, like little tiny bugs. Him getting over it is him realizing that it was all for naught.
On the topic of giving, I don't think Sindri gave without receiving in return, and I don't think he did things necessarily because they were right. Sindri received family. Sindri gave up being with other Dwarves for his brother, and eventually gave up being with his brother. When Kratos comes along, even though he is gruff and an asshole, he doesn't actually judge Sindri. He exists alongside him. The brothers' little rivalry let Sindri open up to them, which leads to him opening up to Brok and them making up. After many many years... Sindri regained what he lost: a desire for family. Think about Sindri's house: it's a large house, with many rooms. You take one look at it and you know Sindri built it. the thing is, he built it to house many people. He thirsted for that company and companionship and warmth. Sindri only became more giving as time went on, not because he was being used, but because it made him happy. He was excited to invite Kratos and Atreus to his home. It's the first thing he said. It's obvious he'd wanted to do that for a while. If you don't believe me, look at his table: it's a table for four people. It's not a small table, either. There's no way it's a table for two, or for more than four. He built it to welcome Kratos and Atreus into his home. Because they not only accepted him, they helped him regain his family. What took and took and took from Sindri was war. The idea that war is only won by those willing to sacrifice everything. Sindri wasn't there for war, he was there to hold onto everything he'd gained. He was there to hold onto his family.
Brok's funeral and Sindri's emotional ride always make me cry. Chris Judge 100% deserved to win game awards, but Sindri's actor deserved a nomination just for those few scenes of trauma and grief alone. He pulled magnificent performance.
The 'what gets bigger the more you take away?' line left me staring at the black credits screen with just this feeling like I'd been punched in the gut.

What’s funny is Kratos shows an incredible amount of kindness to Brok in a super touching scene when he has him bless the spear one of my favorite moments in the game
this was the most authentic moment in the game for me. the dog dying at the beginning, brok dying, sindri lashing out and freya changing all felt contrived.
@@NWOslave Kratos always liked Brok, because he, like Kratos, never sugar coated any opinion or observation he had. SIndri did. Kratos has been lied to, decieved and tricked with word manipulation so many times that he more or less only ever like those who speak the truth, regardless of if it will be hurtfull. If Kratos made a meal for Sindri and Brok, and they both thought it tasted like shit, he'd be pissed at Sindri for lying (which he would) and feel good about Brok's honest opinion (he'd say it tastes like shit).
One of the lessons from the games discussed, is it takes time to repair relationships, especially after a irreparable mistake. Also, the lessons from Ragnarok is "there is no sorry, only being better." There are some actions that can't be repaired, you can only "be better.
They better appreciate the *fuck* out of Sindri if he ever helps them again. I want Kratos oiling his tools for him if there isn't a bigger quest, goddamn

The game director said that their main point of inspiration for the path Sindri takes was the children's book "The Giving Tree". Like the tree, Sindri gives and gives until there's nothing left but a stump.

i get that once sentence so much. when you are in thst state of grief, there are so many things you could say, but none of that matters anymore. all that is left to say is that you love them. and then you have to let them go
The line "There is no 'we'. There's only _you_ no matter what the cost. So what you can do... is get the fuck out of my sight" really shows the weight of his guilt for denying Brok an afterlife and how he projects his own self-loathing thoughts. There's so much venom behind it, but at the same time his face wavers and shows remorse for letting those words come out towards someone who saw him as an uncle figure. He knows it's not really Atreus and Kratos' fault, but he can't feel violated and betrayed. The little pause after Kratos says "morn how you wish" also sells how Sindri doesn't really mean what he said. He knows they will still love him despite the hurtful words. Also, after Brok was killed, Sindri just stops caring about cleanliness (the thing he's synonymous with). No longer wearing gloves and is filthy during Brok's funeral, still covered in blood from holding Brok in his final moments. In a way it echoes Kratos, how his wife and daughter's ashes permanently stain his skin. Sindri also stops walking off camera to use the ability to disappear. He just starts doing it in plain sight.
His cleanliness was born of the trauma of Brok's first death. He explains the souls in the lake were crawling up his arms. He still feels them without his gloves on. The idea of insects or germs are enough of a similarity to bring the feeling of the souls back to his mind. After Brok's gone though. It doesn't matter. Sindri's actions were for nothing. He is the "hole" of Brok's riddle. Part of it was dug by others, but most of it...most of it was dug by himself.
The last words to be spoken in the game is mimir saying “a hole… gets bigger the more you take away” is genius writing. Such an impactful last send off for the game What a work of art this was
17:45 when Atreus states they thought they were his family too, you can hear Sindri react with sniffles. I believe deep down he knows it’s not Atreus’ fault but his grief is so bad it overrides that feeling
The actor himself said when they told him what happens to Brok it hit him like a punch in the gut and he felt like he owed to the characters and everyone involved to give it his all.
I was already broken and sobbing nonstop, but the way Sindri left had me in shambles. He's clearly about to fall to his knees, keeping his balance only enough to get out of there, and was then probably crying his heart out, alone
I think another thing you didn't go as strongly over is how Sindri had broken so much that he lost his will to fear death, or at least something like it. Throughout the game we notice how Sindri is silly man with germaphobia, but the more you watch his scenes with Atreus you notice him placing a hand on him-even after a bit of hesitation. This shows how deeply he cared, how a germaphobe would literally embrace someone, beyond their biggest disgust, just to comfort someone else. He gained this because when he went to go save Brok he was pulled in by the souls in the Lake of Souls within Alfeim and stated *"I can still feel them crawling all over my skin."* ...Then, after Brok dies? The gloves are off. He's covered in blood splatters, grime and dirt. He doesn't care _so much_ that he's not even germaphobic anymore. He even grabs Kratos's hand and throws it off of him rather than deflecting it. The whole reason he felt them crawling is because it was a reminder of what he was willing to do for Brok, and how much he made a mistake by not getting the 4th piece of his soul. ...And now he's gone. And I think the thing that hurts me the most is how... you _know_ Brok's gone. In our own world the idea of an afterlife is muddied and uncertain and can only be approached with an amount of faith. In these worlds, an afterlife is certain... and now Brok no longer has one. So when he says "I love you, Brok" at the end there isn't even a Brok in the afterlife to hear it... and he knows it.
interesting thing i wanted to add, he usually uses gentle, spaced-out hammer taps. but by the time kratos and atreus visit him in midguard, he strikes his dagger with strength, much like brok.
I really like that the devs took a common game trope (the shop keep who constantly gives the player useful items, at no cost) and used it in an interesting way. I think it was honestly impactful, especially when all the shops are empty.
@@hullie7529 I mean, they do upgrade the weapons with just the base materials required. And they often gave tons of useful tools also free of charge. I think the sentiment holds true even if the minutiae doesn't.
Loved how the developers of the game said that Sindri is a great example of the "giving tree" a story about a tree that gives everything and at the end is left as nothing but a stump
The moment that broke me was Brok telling Sindri while in his arms, you just gotta let me go. Asking his own brother to do the one thing he has desperately tried to avoid. But as the game points out, to grieve deeply is to have loved fully because at some point we all have to let go one way or another.
I was watching an interview with the lead writer on Ragnarok and he said that one of Barlog's main story points was that Brok had to die. When he asked Barlog why it was that Brok specifically had to die Barlog's response was "because Brok is the family dog " That's why it hits you so hard.
Thank you for sharing this, that hits deep. Spoilers ahead but yeah, that was the action that sealed odin's fate. Until he murdered Brok, he might have lived to see another day, even if it was just as a soul. But Sindri at least got his revenge, denying Odin an afterlife the same as Brok by crushing his literal soul.
A very, VERY important thing to note is the timeline of the story. Sindri has little if ANY time to mourn. What happened to him was horrific and I said it elsewhere, but the wound is so fresh that he's effectively still has the knife in him. He needs time to heal more than anything else.
Exactly this. When Kratos lost Faye he mourned. When Freya lost Baldur, she mourned. When Sindri lost Brok, he was sent to Svartalfheim to recruit people for war.
@@SaoryEmanoelle I don't think he recruited anyone, I feel like he kinda had a moment in front of the city and proclaimed that no more dwarves would die by Odin's hands. He didn't seem to be in the mood to corral everyone to come to their aid after just witnessing his brothers death, he probably protested at the gates or even locked it up without explanation.
6:20 I was going to say, Kratos does show his thanks to them, even more so towards Brok, which I think he becomes friends with, and Brok and Kratos are both similar in that they don't really say stuff like Thank you often, but they know that they are to one another. Brok and Kratos's friendship was very subtle but really surprising and wholesome if you caught it. And i think that's a reason why Sindri has shown distrust and hatred towards Atreaus but not really Kratos. I think Sindri still respects Kratos. Maybe because of his frienship with Brok. You can juxtapose Sindri and Atreaus's relationship after Brok's death with Kratos and Freya's relationship after Baldur's death. There is a lot of similarities with these relationships. Like Kratos can now take the role that can potentially help fix the relationship between Sindri and Atreaus, like Boi did when he tried to talk sense into Freya, which I believe did help in her coming to her senses.
One thing I noticed is that Sindri talks about how he just gave and gave and gave to Kratos and Atreus, but more often than not, he offered it. They very rarely asked him for anything, and he always just showed up with something else to give. He gave and gave, but it was overwhelmingly by choice, not by request.
In the first game, it was implied that the Dwarves were doing what they were doing for Kratos and Atreus out of obligation for something Faye did for them in the past. They had made the axe for her, but they felt like they owed her and so paid it back by helping her family give her her final request. Once that request was fulfilled, there really should have been more give and take from Kratos and Atreus' end toward Brok and Sindri. The implied debt was repaid. Atreus asking Sindri to join him on his illicit adventures might have been a repayment for all the help Sindri gave them, but all that led to was Kratos and Atreus needing the brothers' help over and over again. Sindri went back to being nothing but a blacksmith and not so much a friend, even after allowing them to stay at his home to hide from Odin.
@@shawnheidingsfelder8179 Well I'd argue that we can see by Sindri's reaction to Atreus getting ready to sneak off without him that he wanted to join Atreus' illicit adventures. It seems rather clear to me that he was joining by choice because he wanted to. It seems less like an implied debt and more like they really cared for Faye, and so viewed her husband and son as extensions of her. My whole point is that Brok and Sindri were rarely asked to do anything. Almost every time they give something to Kratos and Atreus, it's them just popping out of nowhere and being like "hey, take this, no need to thank me" It seems disingenuous of Sindri to say "you took and took" when in reality he gave and gave. In Ragnarok alone: they didn't ask for the bow upgrade, or the compass - the only thing they went out of their way to ask for was a light, and that's only because Brok and Sindri upgraded the doors with their bifrost - which wasn't asked for, but freely given. His whole "you took and took and now I have nothing" is not at all accurate, and likely not how he actually feels. It is grief at Brok being gone - not dead, gone. Completely gone, not even to be reunited with in the afterlife - because of his actions first and foremost. Yes Brok was killed by Odin, who was brought there by Kratos and Atreus, but Brok was going to die at some point anyways, and the end result would be the same.
I absolutely love Sindri, but I feel like a lot of people look at him like almost a victim who is just giving away stuff to random people. It is important to note that from the start Kratos and Atreus weren't random people to Sindri, they were the husband and child of Faye, their friend/found family member (I don't believe the nature of their relationship with Faye is ever explicitly stated but they were close enough to make her an axe powerful enough to go toe to toe with Mjolnir which says something). The new God of War games, especially 2018, is really about Faye and her absence, because that absence shapes everything in the world around it (her meeting Kratos both caused and ended Ragnarok after all). Kratos and Atreus are both doing their quest as a debt to Faye, and Sindri and Brok are helping with that quest as a debt to Faye. That doesn't necessarily excuse Kratos and Atreus for not reciprocating Sindri's generosity, but it explains why Sindri was always so happy to give things to them
That's a good contribution of Sindri acknowledging to help Faye's family, that yea, he contributed a lot to the success of the cast, especially to Kratos and Atreus. but I think people really do grieve for Sindri personally; losing a close family relative is hard to swallow, and harder to process. But Sindri knew that reviving Brok was a bad idea in hindsight: confessing to Atreus about Brok's undead state and KNOWING Brok would rightfully pissed if Brok knew that was the case. Sindri stricken by the same grief in the past and after Ragnarok. It is as valid as before, but it puts in perspective that Sindri does not want to let go, or rather, hasn't even processed his own grief in the past of reviving Brok. What's tragic isn't how he reacted to Kratos and Atreus. It's tragic that Sindri hasn't never left his guilt and grief behind even after Brok died, especially Brok telling him to let go. I see Sindri's grief very sympathetically, but he did put on himself to revive his brother well knowing he isn't actually alive.

They are a shop they were paid for the stuff they gave through hacksilver that's how they make a living plus Kratos and Atreus never asked for his help and didn't Sindri go with Atreus back to help find Tyr Kratos never wanted to find Tyr Sindri is just as responsible for bringing the fake Tyr into his home and his fault that Brok is denied an afterlife
@@davidmcnally6791 Yeah I have to agree with you on that. Sindri was an blacksmith and offered to work on their gear. He gave Atreus the mistletoe arrows after they saved him from a DRAGON just because Atreus cared about him wanted to help him. Sindri was never forced to pushed to do something he didn't really want to other than helping Atreus with Tyr, and with that he could've easily said no. People blaming Atreus for 'using' him ignore that Sindri himself never gave any indication that he didn't want to help. They helped him and Brok in return, going out of their way to do side quests and little tasks for them when they didn't have to. Atreus was even the one that ended up pushing Sindri and Brok back together after they spent years holding a grudge against one another. Blaming Atreus, a child, when Sindrj was a full grown man capable of making his own choices doesn't sit right with me.

I don't think him being friends with Faye is an excuse for the many times both of them just refuse to thank him. I mean even in his own home he ask them to wife and it's common courtesy to do that for the owner. If I walked into a friend's house and they asked me to take off my shoes, I'd do that. It's important to realize that he mentioned this in his video too, they are friends/family and families aren't unbreakable. I know family like this that without knowing take advantage of kindness of other family members, and it still hurts and affects everyone.
Sindri had one of the most incredible character arcs I can think of in any medium. It's a reminder that, in a world filled with happy or at least resolved endings with closure, sometimes things really aren't going to be ok. Ever.
I actually love that he didn't get a 'happy' conclusion at Brok's funeral. It just makes the emotions he feels so much more raw and real. His character was definitely my favorite even with the change, truly great writing.
The scene with sindri ripping atreyus apart is one of the best acted scenes not just in a video game but any type of media in general. Whoever the actor is that played him really made me believe he just lost the most important person in his life. Goosebumps
Yeah, when Atreus says he's sorry and Sindri tells him that he doesn't know what sorry means. It actually reminds me of one of the previous scenes, when Atreus leaves for Asgard the first time after thr huge fight with everyone. When he comes back, he says that he's sorry but Sindri tells him (I can't remember the exact wording) that he can't just act out like that and then say sorry as if it magically fixes everything. And in the same way here, Atreus says sorry but to Sindri there's nothing he can do to earn his forgiveness

The amount of forethought put into the riddle Brok asks Mimir devastated me. At first you go "It's so easy, you call yourself the smartest man alive?" He says ridiculous responses over and over throughout the story, things like Love, leading Brok to say "I don't know what fd up relationships you've been having" which gives another laugh as you're like "Man he really can't get it" And then things rapidly turn up to eleven as you realize this moderately suspicious Tyr tricked everyone, including you, and kills Brok and it never stops. You don't remember the riddle, it couldn't be further from your mind. Then Sindri snaps at Atreus about having given and given and given, but you still don't think of the riddle, you just hurt. You hurt so badly for this character the game made you love. And then at the funeral he's so opposite himself, he's incapable even of making words he is so broken. He's disheveled, they did so well in making him look like a different person entirely, you don't think what the little details are in the moment, you just know the whole looks so shockingly scarily different from Brok's death onward. And finally Mimir realizes, through the devastation of Sindri, his loss and loss and loss leading to his gaping emptiness of an existence, the answer to that comical riddle the smartest man alive simply couldn't answer. A hole. It gets bigger the more you take away. And just like Sindri, you break. You weep. God what a beautiful and tragic story.
A very poetic way of putting it, good sir. I agree completely. There's also another detail that hits me in the feels every time: Mimir, who proudly wears the title of The Smartest Man Alive, solves this riddle unexpectedly for himself and, without thinking, blurts out the answer - without glee or happy relief of a riddle-lover; he almost regrets that he said it out loud, and you can hear bitterness and grief in his voice when he says to Kratos: "Gets bigger... the more you take away."
i dont really know how to analyse it more deeply but i do also think its so interesting that sindri starts ”dissapearing” more openly in plain view after brok dies. like previously hed only teleport when others (or the camera) glanced away, like a fun or graceful trick, but now he just doesnt care anymore
As someone who lost their own brother earlier in the year, seeing how broken sindri was something that hit really close to home. You don't walk away from losing a brother the same
I really do relate. Lost my little (half) brother almost seven years ago. His mother hated me so much I was not allowed at the funeral. I don’t know where he’s buried. That wound reopens every year.
I think part of Sindri's fall isn't just his giving but also his selfishness. The most glaring example is Brok. While Sindri reclaiming him from the afterlife might seem like selflessness and was motivated by love something to keep in mind is that Sindri didn't save his life. he 'undid' his death, took him from an afterlife that, by all indication. Brok was fine staying in. Because of what Sindri did, when Brok was killed by Odin he didn't just die his soul was erased from existence. Brok ceased to be and they'll never see each-other again. I think part of what motivated Sindri was a deep need to not be alone. He Took Brok back from the afterlife, invited Kratos and Atreus to his home, and refused to recruit the dwarves for Ragnarok because he has a deep need to keep people safe. Unfortunately, that need in part ended up causing what he feared most. It's tragic, in the greek sense, something God of War hits on regularly.
Taht was a misread tthough... arguably worse or not. The part of the soul he lost was his 'direciton', and in the mythology and the game that is what leads a soul of the Norse realm to their afterlives. His actual fate apepars to be a Jck o lantern scenario, where.... Basically hsi soul got lost and now wanders between all the realms. considering the implication is that there is this big void between the different mythological worlds, he might basically be there, wandering. Though knowing that fart of a dwarft he's probably singing a swarthy song, trying to find his way.
I dont think he ceased to be, if I'm not mistaken he knly lost his sense if direction? I have a theory it might tie in to the next game going to Egypt, seeing as there's a lot of lore around death in Egyptian mythology. I Don think he will come back, but maybe they can give him rest.
@@jeilman93 While that is possible, though a little too cheery for God of War, I disagree. When asked Mimir doesn't say Broks soul is lost he says " There is nothing to bring back." Broks soul was supposed to remain I'm the lake of Souls before becoming one with the Light of Alfheim, like Fayes did. With it unable to get back to the light it's very possible that his soul simply dissolved.
@@Awaken_To_0 I'd say it's more that because he lost his 'direction', he can't hear anyone, he can't see anyone, and he doesn't know where to go or where he is. So even if they called for him, he would not answer. There's nothing to bring back because that would imply that Brok would know someone's calling him, and probably give him a sense of direction where they are, but he doesn't have direction.

maybe it's because it's just a videogame character, but even I never found myself taking notice of how much Sindri would give to the two protagonists. An incredibly smart and interesting decision for the character honestly.
25:40 I like this scene because Sindri is at first angry towards Kratos (and in pain), but deep down he knows Kratos doesn't deserves such treatment (anymore at least), but he still feels those feelings of suffering. He acheived his revenge, but he is still conflicted, confused, and therefore decides to leave in silence, just like Kratos did after the events of 3 (probably your theory of him moving out somewhere else isn't so far fetched, as his revenge arch is almost parallel to Kratos'). What I do know from this scene is that Sindri knows his anger isn't justified anymore, since Odin is dead, and will probably realise the error of his ways and change for the better (as some say, when you're rock bottom, you can only go up).
what gets me is broks funeral song is played through the entire game in different sections but the tempo is much faster and the octaves are higher and it sounds more whimsical and playful and here at a slow tempo and lower registers it becomes somber and heartbreaking. The exact same notes and the same progression can have different feels based how it is played. Music is crazy man.
They're technically two different songs, "The Huldra Brothers" is the first one we hear that's faster and upbeat, the second "Raeb's Lament" is the slower stronger one we hear during and after Brok's funeral. They share the same motif.
Few things shows that Sindri still has some care left for Kratos and Atreus. When Thrud attacked Atreus he wanted to help him, he also accepted Kratos presence on the funreal and even let him help push boat with Brok body. He is not ready to accept Brok death and forgive them or himself for that but there is some chance that he will reunite with them in future. I hope we will get that in some future game.

Sindri is the textbook definition of the caregiver in a codependent relationship. I think there is A LOT of unknown trauma with Sindri and Brok, their past and their family. Because of that, he has learned to not actually process his emotions, just put on a kind, happy, ok face, until he comes to a breaking point (Brok's initial death, his total death, etc.). Once broken, all that has taken over is anger, revenge and grief. I am not discounting the issues and ways he has been taken advantage of by other characters. I do believe he has every right to be angry and upset at them, for feeling like he has gotten nothing in return BUT, just like a lot of people who have experienced trauma and have fallen into the caregiver role in some form or another, instead of actually saying something it all festered and resentment grew. It just needed something to break it so it could be loosed. One other thing that was frustrating to me is Atreus is still a child. Yes, he has had to grow up quickly for a multitude of reasons but he's still a kid. Sindri's attachment and what he expected out of the relationship between him and Atreus was not balanced because Sindri is the adult. It wasn't going to be equal and without any boundaries put in place initially by Sindri, the codependency was going to continue and he was never going to get anything more out of it. I've watched many of your videos on GOW characters and love how you do mention that nothing is cut and dry. A good, well written character is complex and makes you think. And I wholeheartedly agree. But I don't think the basis of a relationship with Atreus is AS complex because of one being an adult and the other a child. I've also seen said in some other comments, a lot of this was self inflicted by Sindri. I agree. It's trauma based self sabotage that leads to a lot of Sindri's decisions and his codependent need to CARE for someone. Because he thinks his value is based upon his ability to give, care and for how much others need him. TL;DR: Sindri, just like everyone else in these games, needs a therapist who can introduce needed coping skills to help process trauma.
I feel that the music of the funeral is so important to the whole scene. Raebs lament starts with a semblance of hope with its rising melody and inspiring lyrics. But the end of the song matches up with sindris fall back into despair. It’s beautiful and gut wrenching at the same time. The motif of grief, hope and despair all played out in 5 minutes.
The problem with Sindri is that he never set any boundaries. He just let people walk all over him. Even if he was doing it out of kindness, the worst thing you can do is act like you're fine with a decision when you aren't, because you'll become bitter towards your friends that made the decision for you. Once you disappear, you're both hurt by the sudden loss of a good friend, and they'll wonder what they did wrong. Be upfront about stuff you dislike, because at the end of the day, people will respect you more for it.
also important is that if you consider sidequest canon then Kratos even in the first game would have done favours for him if asked. Atreus got them to help out other random people. in fact Kratos is very gracious (even if he finds it difficult to show it) when people treat him well. had Sindri or Brok asked him for anything I've no doubt Kratos would have just gone and done it by the second game.
Some interesting character continuity here. Of the Huldra Brothers, Sindri was always the one who was worse about holding grudges and generally refusing to let go. Remember their feud in GoW 2018? Yeah, both brothers badmouthed each other, but as we figure out through the game, Brok is just ALWAYS badmouthing people. He doesn't really mean any of it and he still cares about Sindri, even going so far as to ask Atreus how he's doing, and when Sindri shows up wanting to reconcile Brok is immediately receptive. But Sindri? Nary a good word about Brok comes out of his mouth and it takes a hurtful lashing out from Atreus for him to even entertain the idea that their feud might not have been all Brok's fault. Sindri never shows any concern for Brok until after they reconcile, and even goes so far as to be incredulous when told that Brok is concerned about him. This trait stays with him in Ragnarok. Note nobody in the house - not even Brok - holds Atreus running to Asgard against him...except Sindri. Sindri genuinely seemed to have taken it personally that Atreus didn't listen and got him hurt Sindri turning his back on Atreus was set up all the way back in GoW4. He's been a vindictive man with a propensity for grudges from the moment we've met him.

I partially disagree on both instances. Sindri didn't see a reason to worry about Brok's well being precisely because he knew his brother beter than anyone. The only thing threatening Brok when he and Sindri were separate was loneliness; but since Brok was the one walking out of the relationship (which he admitted in GoW: Ragnarok), Sindri was resentful and thought "well if you don't need me, then I don't need you too" - which was not true: Sindri needed Brok desperately, that is why he brought his brother up in every conversation ("it's all you ever talk about, over and over!" (c) Atreus). And speaking of Atreus - he and Sindri were through _a lot_ together. The dwarf covered the boy's back when they visited Shrines of the Giants in Midgard; they were "partners", as Sindri put it, - so Atreus' indifference towards his opinion about going to Asgard (remember, they argued heatedly before Kratos came in to demand his son's answer) was taken by Sindri as disregard of their shared friendship. They were closer to each other than anyone except their respective family; and anyone would be insulted if their best friend ignored their advice and throw them out of his way violently. That is not to say that Sindri is a perfect character; he's just very sensitive, that's all. He's been giving and giving and giving what was his to his friends because he greatly and deeply appreciated them, and wanted to "keep them out of harm's way".
I was absolutely devastated by what happened to Sindri, and when he finally let loose on Atreus at Tyr's temple after Brock's death... I felt like a piece of crap IRL. This is without a doubt one of the top 3 memorable and heart tugging moments I've ever experienced playing a video game ever. EVER. My hats off to the story writers.
Man, that crack in Sindri's voice when he says "not even my family" hits like a freaking freight train! His voice actor displayed the pain in that scene to absolute PERFECTION! I still tear up when I hear that delivery!
Seeing this atm probably wasn't very smart... I got a call today that my little brother tried to commit suicide last night. That funeral scene was almost me, and seeing it made me burst to tears. Thank you to the man that stopped and talked to my brother on that bridge, you are a true Christmas miracle.
I always assume that Sindri was kind to/loved Atreus b/c he was Faye's last legacy. I was always wondered if the brothers love Faye like a crush hence why they were willing to help Kratos and Atreus. Before you asked about the axe, the axe is just tool built for her and Faye give to Kratos to protect their son and they do repair whenever Kratos give it to them. I feel like the axe kinda belongs to all of them while Atreus is the last piece of Faye's that they are willing to protect as well. I think most painful thing is that Aterus is not there for the funeral. Sindri probably think that Atreus doesn't care and Atreus didnt about the funeral because he was doing his goal to find all the giants...if there is another game, I wonder if they will point this out.
Nice video and I think it is possible to add a detail that was surprisingly unnoticed. Sindri has this mysophobia (intense and irrational fear of germs, dirt or contamination) and during the whole game he can barely touch anything that is not perfectly clean, even wearing his gloves. But after Brok’s death, Sindri wears gloves no more and shows up at his brother’s funeral completely dirty. Poor Sindri is so destroyed that he simply gave up and cares no more, not even about himself.
18:30 So glad you made that point. It was a bit frustrating to hear some prominent streamers brush Sindris’s transformation off as an overreaction to his brother’s death. I would argue that the disappointment doesn’t even come from not getting anything in return for constantly giving. The disappointment and devastation come from him finally realising that he and Brok were always just collateral characters in what Sindri thought was their family. I feel like this was perfectly conveyed when he said “some of us were bigger fools than others”, and “there is no we, there’s only you”.
While I agree Sindri anger over his brothers death isn’t an overreaction. But his anger shouldn’t even be directed at Atreus. Remember kratos did not want the brothers to be involved in the fight against Odin but they wanted to get revenge for Odin did to their people. Odin killed Brok not Atreus. I also agree that sindri needs time ti grief but the blame is not on Atreus nor kratos.
@@chizzytheguy4990 I think the anger towards Atreus was because of how the former has acted in the past, don't forget the 'little people with little problems' comment, Sindri forgave the comment but never forgot it. Then more recently, Atreus was performing some very dangerous stunts behind Kratos' back like visiting Jormungander and a vengeful Freya without any real plan or thoughts of the consequences, of which Sindri tried to remind him only to be ignored. This only built up more during Atreus's rebellion in which he turned into a bear and mauled Sindri, even when Sindri was visibly hurt and showed disaproval, atreus never once apologised or thanked Sindri for what he did, all the while this happened inside Sindri's own home that he thanklessly let Kratos and Atreus stay in. His comment of Atreus always taking until nothing was left was hardly undeserved, had Atreus heeded the others warnings, thought of others, been more cautious, stopped filling his head with the idea of being a champion, they may have avoided Odin's trap altogether and Brok wouldn't have died.

Right up until Atreus's search for Tyr Kratos and Atreus just minded their own business and just killed people who got in their way. Kratos told Atreus to stop his search for Tyr and even Odin told him too. He kept going back to Asgard even though his father warned him. He trusted and even helped Odin. Sindri could be angry on many people and many things. Maybe he was angry on himself for not telling Brok, maybe he was angry that he is the reason Brok will not go to the afterlife, maybe he was angry on Atreus because he thinks Atreus caused Brok's death, maybe he is angry on Atreus for apologizing because he assumed his apology did not come straight from the heart, maybe he was angry on himself for choosing to be a part of things that did not directly affect him. He can't see Atreus's intention all he can see Atreus as is the person that caused Brok's death (unintentionally). Maybe he still needed some time to get over the negative feelings he felt after Brok's death and since Kratos and Atreus went right after Brok's death he might have not been able to process it properly due it being a recent event and it being so serious. Also Atreus figures out later throughout the game that Kratos is going to die. While they still prevented Ragnarok Brok got killed over the mask. If Atreus did not visit Asgard he would not figure out about the mask. Kratos telling Odin he wouldn't stop searching for Tyr was his greatest mistake. Odin was a master of deception and everyone walked right into his trap. N Brok got himself killed too. He knew way too much. He knew things he should not have known. Maybe Sindri is angry because he regrets getting Brok back to life. The dwarves did not go against Odin. Sindri ahouldn't have let Kratos and Atreus stay at his place. By doing it he put himself and Brok in danger. Maybe Sindri is angry because Atreus kept taking stupid decisions and doing stupid things and now that is why he does not have his brother. Maybe Sindri is angry because Brok was the only family Sindri had.
@dragonquest8ftw1 You mentioned that Atreus never apologizes for what happened: that's not true. Both when he turned into a bear and for what happened to Brok, he apologized. He even tried to talk to Sindri one on one about the bear thing, but Sindri wasn't having it; so Atreus heeded the council of both his father figures and gave Sindri space. I feel it's worth mentioning that while it's not entirely clear how long a period GoW Ragnarok takes place, it's likely only a handful of weeks at most, so there genuinely just wasn't time to give Sindri the space he needed and then talk about what happened.
Sindri is a good example of someone who gives so much of themselves to others, that eventually they lose themselves in the process. His story arc is honestly quite haunting to me.
I thought more people would mention this but sindri also is punishing himself physically and mentally, he hates dirt yet when he is confronted about his death he’s covered in dirt and his clothes are filthy
This is one take, but there's another take here that you didn't look at. Sindri was already broken. People that constantly give and give like he does (not even in a 'I see you needed this so I'm helping you out' but more of a 'take this cool thing you didn't ask for') are generally people that can't stand to be alone, but don't know how to make friends legitimately. He's a craftsman so he's trying to show his worth to them, to essentially 'buy' his way into their good graces. Kratos's first line about him of being of no importance stung more than he let on and he spends his time trying to prove them wrong the only way he knows how. Hell, even his one-upmanship with his brother over the upgrades was just a way for him to be close to his brother while not actually being close to his brother. The guy suffers from separation anxiety. Make no mistake by the way. Sindri was the one that put Atreus on the path to those shrines. He was the one leading them there. He even admits that he was the one that told him about them at the start of the game. Because he wanted to do something with him. He wanted a bonding activity with him. The scene at the forge after, there's a note there as well that gets over looked. The hate and anger, he's spouting at them, but I don't think its aimed at them. It's aimed at himself. He blames himself for it. 'If I hadn't of done all those things, brok would be alive'. He's even on his way to healing at the end. At the funeral, he's hesitant to leave. If he was still completely engulfed by rage he would have watched the arrow fly, set the boat on fire, then turn and leave abruptly. He doesn't though, he hesitates, like he wants to talk to them, but stops himself. And this is where the other meaning for the forge scene kicks in: where before he suffered from separation anxiety, now he suffers from the 'cursed' mentality. He lost the person closest to him 'twice' and so he thinks that anyone close to him is in danger. That's why he spurned them away, its why he didn't say anything at the funeral. If he was blaming them, he wouldn't so quickly volunteer to help in ragnarock, he would have sat back and done nothing when Atreus was attacked. But he didn't. He still acted when he was needed. I also STRONGLY disagree with the 'he gets nothing in return'. That's a load of crap. Yes, he doesn't get anything material, but he gets a lot back from helping them. They can do the physical things that he cannot. They can appreciate his craftsmanship and, frankly, act as guinea pigs for his ideas in the field. They were able to build there new home in yggsdrasil because of them, and he got back together with his brother because of them. He also got companionship which is what he was desperately needing. Plus, ya know, getting to live through ragnarock and they took care of odin for him where he couldn't put him down by himself. His issue isn't rage at others, its self loathing now, but I foresee that being resolved in the next game, much the same way freya's rage was here.
the other issue is that Kratos and Atreus are in a habit of helping people (even if begrudingly in the first game). Had he asked I've no doubt they'd have done anything for him within reason. you are correct in that Sindri already has issues. he gives to feel useful and so by extension actually asking would feel like the others might turn on him over it. The other problem is Kratos isn't good with people so he's not the type to make clear that he would help and rarely offers to help unless it's obvious to even a blind man you need it.
@@TGPDrunknHick As someone who is, i believe, quite a bit like Sindri. It can be very hard to actually ask for help. You can be near your breaking point. And people can tell you they appreciate you. And you want to ask them for something but just.... can't For some reason or other, you just won't ask. Maybe you'll just expect them to offer it. Or you'll feel its never the right time. You give and give and give, and get nothing in return, until you break and lash out. And that's the only way you'll ever get any help. Cuz its only at that point that people realize you want help, that you need help. You could ask at any time, and they'd be happy to do it. But something just stops you from asking, and you can't articulate your feelings. And no one notices it because you push it aside to help them again. Because you love helping people. Sometimes not even realize this is eating you up inside So yeah, he could have asked for help or a favour at any time. But not everyone is able to do that. Its not a fair way to think. To expect people to somehow know what you want. But its a mindset that's incredibly hard to get out of because you can't articulate it
@@kharnthebetrayer8251 that's what I mean. Sindri could solve his problems if he'd have asked. his existing issues prevent that and while Kratos probably would do pretty much anything asked he's also less socially aware than the average person and so even less likely to notice something is up.
Sindri can be a great antihero if he continues this path. He just wanted to hold onto the only family he had, and yet lost it all. He knows what he did was wrong but we can understand his rage. Reminds me of someone else.

Do note the small detail of Sindri NOT sleeping, not taking his own advice that which he gave to Atreus, thus he is thinking so much, that his mind is in need of reorganization but that was him before the loss of his brother.
Sindri's grief really parallels Freya's. She lashed out and tried to take out her anger on Kratos when, in reality, she believes herself responsible for Baldur's death. Sindri is obviously angry at everyone for being fooled, but he absolutely blames himself for not just putting Brok in danger but denying him an afterlife because of his own mistakes.
Sindri is the manifestation of the “No good deed goes unpunished”, sadly the world always seeks to break us, but it is up to us if we remain broken or we change into something else.
The whole game is building on the tension that an important death is coming, the death of Kratos. This is how to subvert expectations. The writing of this game is shockingly complete. Absolute masterpiece
@@VOID-GRIMM_Sinn I think Atreus looking for Tyr almost made the prophecy happen. If Kratos didn't change and Brok hadn't pointed out the flaws in what fake Tyr was saying, that could have been it right there. Odin leads them to war disguised as Tyr and has the mask, leading to Kratos dying.

I loved the inclusion of Sindri's story in Ragnarok. It felt like it was written by someone who lost as a letter to others who have lost. I've been in Sindri's shoes in losing both the most important person in my life and my sibling... that's what grief looks like. That's what it feels like. All the feelgood bullshit is a lie. The fact that nobody else cares as much as you do is a constant wound. The fact that you were powerless to help and that nobody else helped either is proof that the universe is a bastard. And you wish with all your heart that there's some kind of violence that would numb the pain, or that at least someone would kill you or hurt you so much that you look like how you feel. But there isn't. The thing is, that never goes away. Every once in a while, you'll feel like you did the day it happened. It'll always be there to remind you of your loss. That's why Sindri wouldn't accept any comfort from Kratos or Atreus. He'll always look at them and know that they don't carry that knife in their side like he does. He knows that they'll heal from this grief. Everyone will, except him. And to a degree, he doesn't want to. Sindri's character is always trying to hold onto everything. That's why he shows love by giving. But now, that pain is a monument to Brok, and he's going to hold onto it out of love for Brok. You don't need any more reason for Sindri to act the way he does after losing Brok. That's real grief. That's real sorry.
I understand that. I felt that. I know it doesn't mean to any strangers. I just find it sad that some people really think it is unreasonable to blame Atreus, simply because he is a child. As if no child can ever make mistakes or be held responsible to a degree. It doesn't change what happened and that hollowing pain in the chest doesn't help either.
Mimir after seeing the downfall of Sindri, finally got the answer to the riddle "a hole gets bigger the more you take away" and a hole formed inside Sindri
Kratos and Freya being allowed to attend and perform important roles at the funeral shows that Sindri still wants them in his life, although Kratos offering condolences proved to be too much and caused him to shut down some more.
I honestly loved the way Sindri’d arch slowly unfolded. One thing I did notice when he went to fetch Draupnir was his reluctance at the idea of letting it go despite Brok’s assurances that they would be fine. I feel like Sindri’s quiet character flaw is his inability to let go and it takes him to places we wouldn’t usually expect. I was okay with Sindri’s resurrection of Brok up until we went to see the Lady, I was surprised that not only did Sindri lie to his brother but he gaslight him telling him he was “too uncouth”to see the Lady and pay her the proper deference. Also him bringing Brok back cost Brok community, none of the dwarves want anything to do with him and he doesn’t even know why. Even his anger was strange, I understand him being angry at Atreus but it feels as though he never directs it anywhere else, not Kratos the adult, nor Mimir or Freya who knew Tyr and could have sensed something wrong to me at least it felt like he lashed out at Atreus because he was the weakest link there in terms of agonizing over Brok’s death.
Atreus was the one who started looking for Tyr after all, and Sindri was helping him the entire time. And aside from Brok, he seemed closest to Atreus out of all of them. Helped the kid every chance he got, even when he didn't have to.
I hope we get an Atreus spin off game in the future where we help give Sindri some closure and hopefully repair their relationship like Kratos and Freya did
It would be nice but I do not think it would be likely. Atreus is the very last person Sindri would want help from. Even if Atreus is the last person in the world aside from Sindri, I doubt the latter will want the former's help.
Sindri is a victim of what happens when the unfairness of life leaves you the odd man out. It is something that can't be fixed. It can't be made right. He's not just struggling with Brok's death he's also struggling with the shattering of his own identity. The guilt he feels because he doesn't just blame them....he blames himself. He is lobbying the anger at them because he's feeling it towards himself. This is his way of avoiding facing his own guilt for not having saved his brother's soul in the first place.
Sindri not saying anything to Kratos when he finally tried comforting him during the funeral was epic, Sindri saying nothing because he knows Kratos has felt the same way but doesn't care because of his culpability, Kratos saying nothing more because he knows it won't make any difference to Sindri who is now walking the same road he once did.
I think there's potential for Freya to help Sindri heal. She tried to save Brok and she also lost her family, so Sindri might be more receptive to her than he would be with the others.
That would be an interesting dynamic considering he was indirectly responsible for her son’s death. I was kinda surprised they only addressed that a little in the story

A detail I liked about Sindri’s fall: before Brock’s death he always used his teleportation powers with finesse; walking off-screen or behind an object to use it. Now he simply teleports, not caring for any flare or if anyone sees him
Sindri's grief is an absolute normal response and I feel like it helps represent those who ARE grieving, it gives them an outlet to realize that they're ok and they're not alone, their feelings are a normal process and it's ok
It feels very similar to something someone said about one of my favourite books, "In a story about recovery, it's just as important to show what happens to those who fail or choose not to move on and grow from their past as it is to show the recovery process in other characters".
One of the things I noticed was the tone change in Brok & SIndri's theme in every scene Sindri is present in after Brok's death. I think it hit home how volatile and angry he became. Though I'd also want to point out one detail that was missed here, and that was how Sindri blamed himself for Brok missing a part of his soul after bringing him back to life when he told Atreus the story. We then here from Mimir that this means Brok is denied an afterlife, a notion which I would think would lead Sindri to blame himself now for Brok not getting an afterlife. I think this plays both into how he blames himself in part for everything that happened. I also think it's why he told Odin "this is what comes next" after destroying his soul, it's not just poetic irony for Odin, but also for Sindri to be the one to do it, to exact the same fate on Odin that Odin brought on his brother.
The difference between Kratos and Sindri's rage is that Kratos was a victim but NOT blameless. Sindri was a victim and blameless for his actions.
He resurected his brother with 3 out 4 soul bits and now Brok is gone forever he cant rest in the light he is not blameless.
Compared to things Kratos has done, he is mostly blameless. Yes he made a mistake, but it was one to save someone he loved.

Little heartbreaking details :
In Brok's funeral when Kratos try to console Sindri, Sindri pushes his away, look at him with anger, provokes him even with a small step towards Kratos, his previous fear of Kratos now gone.
Then after only a moment, the anger recedes from his eyes and they get empty and sad again before he walks away silently without looking at anyone or anything.
I see it as Sindri knowing that his anger towards Kratos and Atreus is misguided but having no other way to deal with his grief.
Love how the acting can convey so much emotions and character.

In a way, the ultimate isult to Brøk's death was what Sindri did to save his life... for being unable to let Brøk go, he doomed his brother to oblivion; and Sindri knows this, deep in his heart.
No matter how many fingers he points, no matter how many Odins he kills, he will always be the one who doomed his brother.

FatBrett failed to mention a MASSIVE aspect to Sindri's agony - It's all self-inflicted.
Brok was fated to die, and did in fact die earlier at the forge. Sindri, in grief traveled to the Lake of Souls in Alfheim to retrieve his brother's soul. He shares with Atreius that upon entering the lake, he could feel the souls clinging to him, climbing up upon him. Due to this, he was rushed and was only able to collect three of Brok's four soul parts - with the missing part being the 'homing' part. The one that allows his soul to find its way back to Alfheim.
So, what this means, is that when Brok died at the hands of Odin, because of Sindri's direct meddling with fate - Brok is denied an afterlife and is instead forced to suffer oblivion due to now having an incomplete soul.
This is really what breaks Sindri, is not so much that Brok is dead - is that Brok is annihilated. Additionally, after Sindri had resurrected his brother, they were essentially shunned by their people. So, up until this point, they were an island. Now, Sindri has no brother, and unless the Dwarves accept him back, he has no people. Sindri is now a lost soul, wandering the realms in anguish.
I'll be honest, it's so different from storylines than you usually see - it's very well done, despite how crushing it is. It feels so much more authentic leaving it without "resolution", because let's be honest - not all loss like this is every truly resolved.
So basicly if he waited with hes brothers resurection then this would have never have happended...
Also the dwarfes where right in that aspect do not bring back the dead...
I mean he is sole responseble for hes brothers soul suffers in oblivion cause hes brothers soul is incomplete...
If anything he have no right to blame others for hes own stupidity.... I do not envy that man or anything. I hope he gets the same treatment than.
The thing is, if Brok stayed dead in the initial time, Draupnir wouldn't have been created to thwart Heimdall, which sets Ragnarok in motion.
@@sebulller He is the reason Brok has no afterlife, but is not the reason Brok is dead right now and has every right to feel anger towards others. As was explained in the video Kratos and Atreus while maybe not willingly, took advantage of him. Their "quest" to which Sindri merely aided and gave hospitality only ended up getting his own brother killed based on reckless decision to invite a mysterious person such as Tyr into their home. Through the first and second game we are told stories of Odin's trickery and deception, and someone as experienced as Kratos or as clever as Mimir should have at the very least been skeptical. That being said Sindri's decision to rescue Brok from the lake of souls was also a reckless decision, but in that case Sindri would have blinded by grief. My point is that while yes Sindri should blame himself, he still has everyright to feel used and robbed in this situation.
What I don't understand is that first Brok was dead, Sindri only delayed the inevitable by bringing him back to life. And that moment came unfortunately when Odin killed him... but blaming Atreus and Kratos for that is unfair, what were they supposed to do ? it's thanks to them that all the kingdoms are saved, Tyr was a mistake but no one saw it coming, but it's all this process that allowed the destruction of Asgard.
In the end he brought this pain upon himself, he should have grieved before. I understand that it's hard to mourn, but it's not an excuse for what he did, because in the end because of his egoism he totally destroyed his friend's soul... and now instead of assuming his responsibilities he blames everyone, without thinking that it can hurt his friends as well, and I hated him in the end for that.
Even after Atreus and Kratos tried to apologize but he doesn't care. I understood at first but now he's just fucking annoying ! He can just go fuck himself.

One thing of note: We hear the characters say often that vengeance doesn't bring you peace, but we get to see it firsthand with Sindri. He won, he killed Oden and avenged his brother, but he's still am emotional wreck...
And he's still hostile towards his allies.
People can get justice and still be broken. Ultimately, just punishing the bad guy is never going to completely ease pain. It takes more than that.

The “what gets bigger the more you take away” riddle had such a poignant payoff. At first it just seemed like something silly the Mirmir was overthinking, but to bring it back in the end. Glorious.

Sindri did not deserve this but I was happy to see him change. Previously a people pleaser and a nice guy type, he now puts himself and his feelings first, which is honestly a completely normal response to such grief. It would be weird if Sindri stayed the same after what happened.

Yeah as sad as that was, it showed he has growth. That builds character. For people that have lost a loved one, the worst thing you can do is linger on it because their ghost haunts your steps. Letting go is the first step to healing. It's a painful path its one we ALL have to take eventually.

When my loved ones passed away, I let them linger. I was lucky enough to have recordings of them. Able to hear their voices. The single largest source of healing for my spirit was hearing their laughter again.

I’d like to give a bunch of credit to Sindri’s voice actor for how much more impactful he made Sindri’s anger. Throughout this whole game, I often forgot that these characters had voice actors and weren’t just talking themselves. Sindri’s emotions felt so real.

I always get choked up when Mimir finally solves the riddle at Brok’s funeral. To think something so minute and easily forgettable could represent so much about Brok’s relationship with everyone. Masterful writing

When I first heard the riddle I knew the answer, so I was mostly laughing at all the attenpts at solving it. I had completely forgotten it. The moment Mimir says the answer I burst into tears, realizing what the writers had done. It was such a brilliant use of a dumb riddle and I still feel it to this day

One more thing to add:
When Sindri revived Brok he wasn't able to retrieve all parts of his soul. Throughout both games Brok was missing one of his four soul parts.
In one of the travel dialogues Mimir mentions that this effectively denies Brok an afterlife in the Light of Alfheim. So I believe this just adds to the incredible amount of pain and grief Sindri experiences. For once in his life he took something for himself in reviving Brok so he wouldn't have to be alone. And this one selfish act of his,the only selfish act of Sindri's we see in both games, has denied his own brother, whom he loved from the bottom of his heart, the ability to really move on in death.
That is what Sindri means when he says: "You want sorry? This is what sorry looks like."
He has to live with the fact that the only selfish act in his life, has taken something from the person he loves most in life. And no matter how hard he tries, no matter the lenghts he would go to, he can not give Brok an afterlife.
Now THAT would really break anyone, no matter how tough.

One thing I would like to clarify about Sindri's "You want sorry?" quote. I think it is more than his guilt here. Part of him certainly feels a tremdous amount of anger towards Atreus and Kratos. For "exploiting" him, in his mind. For taking everything he did for them for granted and never acknowledging his contributions. However, the other part of this anger is certainly projected onto them.
Like yes they brought Odin to his home, but he invited him in himself. And it was him who would not allow Brok to pass on, rather deciding to revive him and unwittingly deny him an afterlife in the process. I believe that is what is mostly "eating at him" as he says when he confides in Atreus about the matter. Yes he feels guilty about not telling Brok that he died before, but the knowledge that his borther no longer has a chance at an afterlife is what really feeds his guilt. I believe the person he is angry with the most is still himself.

I think he was just a kid, who, like all of us at one time or another, was trying to figure out who he was and what his purpose was. He could have never predicted what would happen to Brok. Everyone was fooled. His search for Tyr and his insistence that he and his father keep searching was his response to try to stop Ragnorok from happening and save his father. If you want to argue that Sindri was a better friend to Atreus than Atreus was to him, you may have a point. But you must understand that Sindri has lived for centuries whereas Atreus is merely a teenager still evolving into a man. Had he a choice he wouldn't have endangered anyone. He already lost his mother and didn't want to lose his father. That's why he took so many risks. Not out of maliciousness or a need for personal glory. If he truly wanted glory, why'd he destroy the mask?

Him and his dad really just took and took and took with very minimal appreciation or thanks for what was given to them. Perfect explanation and I never thought about the meaning of this is what sorry looks like in that light. Makes you really feel horrible for Sindri although I hope he finds a way to make up with them and move forward.
His obsession with cleaning was probably due to his trauma at the Lake of Souls. In his own words, he could still feel the souls trying to grab him, claw at him, and felt his skin writhing. He tried scratching himself raw to the point of passing out. So I think that’s one of the main reasons he is so adverse to filth. Please note I say “one of” the main reasons.
God that's such a good point. His 'quirk' is far deeper than just an automatic compulsion, it has legitimate grounding in trauma.
Sindri is Izanami. He goes to the underworld to save the soul of a loved one, he fails to fully bring them back and develops a need to clean himself due to their time in the underworld. Izanami cleans his eyes and nose and out come 3 pieces, Tsukuyomi, Amateratsu, and Susano’o, Sindri manages to take 3/4ths of Brok’s soul. Maybe in a future game we will help Sindri fight a demonic Izanagi to recover Broks soul

Something that I saw when Sindri was telling Kratos and Atreus how much he hatdd them was that they kept taking from him with no second thought, when really, Sindri was giving. Kratos and Atreus never asked to live at Sindri's house, they never asked for new upgrades, they never asked for the brothers' most prized possession to make a weapon out of, he gave them those ideas by offering. He is so devistated by his brother's death that he can't let himself take accountability for it. It's a very realistic take of someone going through extreme loss. They can either blame no one but themselves or blame everyone but themselves
at the same time, while he surely thought nothing of it all at the time (except for draupnir that he was reluctant to give), once it came time for him to assign blame to everyone around as a way to grieve... he must have told himself "look at everything i gave them; what have they ever given me in return apart from trouble?"
that added to the fact his whole life's story is him being in service of someone else, and getting bitten in the ass as a consequence of it. Worked with odin? Ended up horribly. Worked on the leviathan axe to counteract Odin? Thats how brok died for the first time. Help Kratos? He loses his brother again, this time for good and he doesnt even get an afterlife. At this point he's not just done with Kratos, Atreus or the gods: he is done helping anyone, as this never brought him anything else than misery in the end.
Kratos didnt even want their help most of the time, if they did nothing kratos would have gone on regardless

@@conormccue2871 Taking what's offered is worlds apart from scrounging and thieving. Don't pretend that giving can't be toxic too - there are plenty of people in the world who give out a lot with the sole motivation of bringing it up at a later date as a debt that needs repaying.
Plus, think about it from Kratos' side. Would Sindri have ever been an ally if every time something was offered, Kratos said "I refuse to take this. I will not be in your debt!"? Taking what's offered was the polite thing to do

Yeah, I agree. I don't think Sindri is going to get the kind of redemption story that Freya did in this game. I suspect he's going to go pretty dark.
The scenario I imagine in the next game is that they will have no choice but to turn to Sindri for one more favor. And the price he'll exact is for them to find the missing piece of Brok's soul, an impossible task. But Atreus has skill with soul magic, and may be able to do it somehow. We'll see.

It feels very "beware the fury of a patient man"; it was very impressive what one guy with the right tools can do.
@@DieEineMieze There's no hard-fast writing rule that says just because something has been declared impossible, it can't happen, especially in fantasy. Some of the greatest plot turns involve things declared impossible in act one accomplished by the end of act three.
Writers routinely set up impossible challenges for their characters. I hear writers talk about this all the time, deliberately writing themselves into a corner. After all, if the writer can't think of an obvious solution, neither can the audience. And it forces the writer to push themselves creatively.
Of course, I've found this practice tends to lead to more cheap, cheating story solutions than brilliant ones. But I have faith in the GoT writers that if they decide to pursue this plot direction, they'll do it well, make it work.
Another neat thing about the funeral is that for the first time, Sindri challenges Kratos' space. Before, Kratos would aggressively exist and Sindri would quickly get out of the way.

Two things I want to add:
I think Sindri getting to formally say goodbye to his brother, is the first step in filling the hole. We never saw Freya or Kratos get the opportunity, and it led them to do horrible things, but Sindri did
And a difference between Sindri and Kratos and Freya, is that at the funeral we see that his eyes aren't filled with hate, or anger, just pain
The reason that the hate isn't there is because he got his vengeance. He killed Odin for good and he did so at no cost to any innocents. Kratos couldn't be at peace while Zeus or the other Greek gods were still alive, but by killing them, he also wiped out nearly his entire homeland! So he's riddled with guilt, whereas Sindri can have some relative peace knowing that his brother's murderer is truly gone.

Sindri is just beginning to go through the path of Young Kratos who had doomed his own family member to a god who murdered them but in reality, it was only themselves who is to blame for what happened.

I think the fact Sindri doesn't forgive them is so important. It's a lesson on how sometimes forgiveness can't be earned.

Forgive what though really, brok was killed by odin who fooled everyone in disguise as tyr, they made mjolnir and it gave them an awful name and they fell out over it for many years, artreus and kratos brought them back together again and they both willingly helped them fight against odin, brok was a casuality of war that they both joined, sindri is rightfully mad but wrongfully directed but that's just great story telling because it reflects real life, sindri blaming them because he can't deal with broks death which many people also do because anger is the easiest emotion to have, the funeral was him finally moving on from anger into depression, I don't think they will continue his story outright as a side character but I'd love to see him as an Easter egg in which ever pantheon they move to next
@@richmahogany21 Thats not really the point. The point is that Sindri gave, gave, and gave. Gave them his treasures, his love, his home, his skills, and now his brother and never retrieved anything in return. The devs literally have said sindris story was sort of based off the giving tree.

@@richmahogany21 Um, i think his anger was very justified and saying it wasn't directed properly just dismisses the whole lesson being taught. The whole point of that Sindri arch is to teach Artreus about Intent < Impact.
His consequences are the reality of his actions whether he intended to harm or not. He fucked up. And just like Kratos, he will have to live with the consequences of taking his dearest friend's kindness for granted. It's up to Sindri to decide when or even IF he wants to forgive them and up to Artreus to learn from his mistake instead of letting himself stagnate emotionally like Kratos did.
Sometimes you don't earn someone's forgiveness but that doesn't mean you let it stop you from growing, learning, and feeling. It's pretty much the lesson Kratos had to learn in GoW4 but at a comparatively smaller scale.
One of the smaller details I really appreciate is how in God of War Sindri was basically a germaphobe who'd basically throw up on the sight of germs. Then in Ragnarok traces of that are still there because he still wears the giant gloves and all that. Then after Brok's death you see him take off the gloves and get all dirty. I think that's a really subtle yet amazing way they show how far Sindri fell and how much Brok meant to him. He's literally starting to lose himself in the grief and pain.
seeing him just not care about anything anymore was really heartbreaking the first time through and even now i can feel how broken Sindri has become, they did a really good job trying to make me cry in the game, almost succeeded a few times
Also another fun fact about Sindri and any general persons grief psychologically, is that those left to grieve will actively take on the traits of their late relative as a means of "keeping them alive". So not only is it a means of showing how far hes fallen, its also written in a way that he is grieving in a very realistic way.

I can’t believe I missed him literally “taking the gloves off”. I was so absorbed with Sindri’s face and voice acting that I just didn’t look at his hands. Such a heartbreaking arc for the character, and so well brought to life by the actor and animators.

On the topic of giving, I don't think Sindri gave without receiving in return, and I don't think he did things necessarily because they were right. Sindri received family. Sindri gave up being with other Dwarves for his brother, and eventually gave up being with his brother. When Kratos comes along, even though he is gruff and an asshole, he doesn't actually judge Sindri. He exists alongside him. The brothers' little rivalry let Sindri open up to them, which leads to him opening up to Brok and them making up.
After many many years... Sindri regained what he lost: a desire for family.
Think about Sindri's house: it's a large house, with many rooms. You take one look at it and you know Sindri built it. the thing is, he built it to house many people. He thirsted for that company and companionship and warmth. Sindri only became more giving as time went on, not because he was being used, but because it made him happy. He was excited to invite Kratos and Atreus to his home. It's the first thing he said. It's obvious he'd wanted to do that for a while.
If you don't believe me, look at his table: it's a table for four people. It's not a small table, either. There's no way it's a table for two, or for more than four. He built it to welcome Kratos and Atreus into his home. Because they not only accepted him, they helped him regain his family.
What took and took and took from Sindri was war. The idea that war is only won by those willing to sacrifice everything. Sindri wasn't there for war, he was there to hold onto everything he'd gained. He was there to hold onto his family.
Excellent point about the size of Sindri's home. He built it to house his whole family.

Brok's funeral and Sindri's emotional ride always make me cry. Chris Judge 100% deserved to win game awards, but Sindri's actor deserved a nomination just for those few scenes of trauma and grief alone. He pulled magnificent performance.
The 'what gets bigger the more you take away?' line left me staring at the black credits screen with just this feeling like I'd been punched in the gut.

Kratos has been lied to, decieved and tricked with word manipulation so many times that he more or less only ever like those who speak the truth, regardless of if it will be hurtfull. If Kratos made a meal for Sindri and Brok, and they both thought it tasted like shit, he'd be pissed at Sindri for lying (which he would) and feel good about Brok's honest opinion (he'd say it tastes like shit).

One of the lessons from the games discussed, is it takes time to repair relationships, especially after a irreparable mistake. Also, the lessons from Ragnarok is "there is no sorry, only being better." There are some actions that can't be repaired, you can only "be better.

i get that once sentence so much. when you are in thst state of grief, there are so many things you could say, but none of that matters anymore. all that is left to say is that you love them. and then you have to let them go
The line "There is no 'we'. There's only _you_ no matter what the cost. So what you can do... is get the fuck out of my sight" really shows the weight of his guilt for denying Brok an afterlife and how he projects his own self-loathing thoughts. There's so much venom behind it, but at the same time his face wavers and shows remorse for letting those words come out towards someone who saw him as an uncle figure. He knows it's not really Atreus and Kratos' fault, but he can't feel violated and betrayed. The little pause after Kratos says "morn how you wish" also sells how Sindri doesn't really mean what he said. He knows they will still love him despite the hurtful words.
Also, after Brok was killed, Sindri just stops caring about cleanliness (the thing he's synonymous with). No longer wearing gloves and is filthy during Brok's funeral, still covered in blood from holding Brok in his final moments. In a way it echoes Kratos, how his wife and daughter's ashes permanently stain his skin. Sindri also stops walking off camera to use the ability to disappear. He just starts doing it in plain sight.
His cleanliness was born of the trauma of Brok's first death. He explains the souls in the lake were crawling up his arms. He still feels them without his gloves on. The idea of insects or germs are enough of a similarity to bring the feeling of the souls back to his mind. After Brok's gone though. It doesn't matter. Sindri's actions were for nothing. He is the "hole" of Brok's riddle. Part of it was dug by others, but most of it...most of it was dug by himself.
The last words to be spoken in the game is mimir saying “a hole… gets bigger the more you take away” is genius writing. Such an impactful last send off for the game What a work of art this was

17:45 when Atreus states they thought they were his family too, you can hear Sindri react with sniffles. I believe deep down he knows it’s not Atreus’ fault but his grief is so bad it overrides that feeling

The actor himself said when they told him what happens to Brok it hit him like a punch in the gut and he felt like he owed to the characters and everyone involved to give it his all.

You guys do realize that "a hole gets bigger the more you take away" you took too much from Sindri... Now his hole is too big to fill in.
I think another thing you didn't go as strongly over is how Sindri had broken so much that he lost his will to fear death, or at least something like it. Throughout the game we notice how Sindri is silly man with germaphobia, but the more you watch his scenes with Atreus you notice him placing a hand on him-even after a bit of hesitation. This shows how deeply he cared, how a germaphobe would literally embrace someone, beyond their biggest disgust, just to comfort someone else.
He gained this because when he went to go save Brok he was pulled in by the souls in the Lake of Souls within Alfeim and stated *"I can still feel them crawling all over my skin."*
...Then, after Brok dies?
The gloves are off.
He's covered in blood splatters, grime and dirt.
He doesn't care _so much_ that he's not even germaphobic anymore. He even grabs Kratos's hand and throws it off of him rather than deflecting it.
The whole reason he felt them crawling is because it was a reminder of what he was willing to do for Brok, and how much he made a mistake by not getting the 4th piece of his soul.
...And now he's gone.
And I think the thing that hurts me the most is how... you _know_ Brok's gone. In our own world the idea of an afterlife is muddied and uncertain and can only be approached with an amount of faith.
In these worlds, an afterlife is certain... and now Brok no longer has one.
So when he says "I love you, Brok" at the end there isn't even a Brok in the afterlife to hear it... and he knows it.

I really like that the devs took a common game trope (the shop keep who constantly gives the player useful items, at no cost) and used it in an interesting way. I think it was honestly impactful, especially when all the shops are empty.

The moment that broke me was Brok telling Sindri while in his arms, you just gotta let me go. Asking his own brother to do the one thing he has desperately tried to avoid. But as the game points out, to grieve deeply is to have loved fully because at some point we all have to let go one way or another.
I was watching an interview with the lead writer on Ragnarok and he said that one of Barlog's main story points was that Brok had to die. When he asked Barlog why it was that Brok specifically had to die Barlog's response was "because Brok is the family dog "

Thank you for sharing this, that hits deep. Spoilers ahead but yeah, that was the action that sealed odin's fate. Until he murdered Brok, he might have lived to see another day, even if it was just as a soul. But Sindri at least got his revenge, denying Odin an afterlife the same as Brok by crushing his literal soul.
A very, VERY important thing to note is the timeline of the story. Sindri has little if ANY time to mourn. What happened to him was horrific and I said it elsewhere, but the wound is so fresh that he's effectively still has the knife in him. He needs time to heal more than anything else.
Exactly this. When Kratos lost Faye he mourned. When Freya lost Baldur, she mourned. When Sindri lost Brok, he was sent to Svartalfheim to recruit people for war.

He didn't seem to be in the mood to corral everyone to come to their aid after just witnessing his brothers death, he probably protested at the gates or even locked it up without explanation.
6:20 I was going to say, Kratos does show his thanks to them, even more so towards Brok, which I think he becomes friends with, and Brok and Kratos are both similar in that they don't really say stuff like Thank you often, but they know that they are to one another. Brok and Kratos's friendship was very subtle but really surprising and wholesome if you caught it. And i think that's a reason why Sindri has shown distrust and hatred towards Atreaus but not really Kratos. I think Sindri still respects Kratos. Maybe because of his frienship with Brok. You can juxtapose Sindri and Atreaus's relationship after Brok's death with Kratos and Freya's relationship after Baldur's death. There is a lot of similarities with these relationships. Like Kratos can now take the role that can potentially help fix the relationship between Sindri and Atreaus, like Boi did when he tried to talk sense into Freya, which I believe did help in her coming to her senses.

One thing I noticed is that Sindri talks about how he just gave and gave and gave to Kratos and Atreus, but more often than not, he offered it. They very rarely asked him for anything, and he always just showed up with something else to give. He gave and gave, but it was overwhelmingly by choice, not by request.
Though to his credit, he was overtaken by grief and genuinely taken advantage of as Atreus couldn't dispute his words.
Yeah I admit it was uncomfortable to see him being cold to Atreus especially, but at the same time I feel for Sindri.
In the first game, it was implied that the Dwarves were doing what they were doing for Kratos and Atreus out of obligation for something Faye did for them in the past. They had made the axe for her, but they felt like they owed her and so paid it back by helping her family give her her final request. Once that request was fulfilled, there really should have been more give and take from Kratos and Atreus' end toward Brok and Sindri. The implied debt was repaid. Atreus asking Sindri to join him on his illicit adventures might have been a repayment for all the help Sindri gave them, but all that led to was Kratos and Atreus needing the brothers' help over and over again. Sindri went back to being nothing but a blacksmith and not so much a friend, even after allowing them to stay at his home to hide from Odin.
@@shawnheidingsfelder8179 Well I'd argue that we can see by Sindri's reaction to Atreus getting ready to sneak off without him that he wanted to join Atreus' illicit adventures. It seems rather clear to me that he was joining by choice because he wanted to.
It seems less like an implied debt and more like they really cared for Faye, and so viewed her husband and son as extensions of her.
My whole point is that Brok and Sindri were rarely asked to do anything. Almost every time they give something to Kratos and Atreus, it's them just popping out of nowhere and being like "hey, take this, no need to thank me"
It seems disingenuous of Sindri to say "you took and took" when in reality he gave and gave.
In Ragnarok alone: they didn't ask for the bow upgrade, or the compass - the only thing they went out of their way to ask for was a light, and that's only because Brok and Sindri upgraded the doors with their bifrost - which wasn't asked for, but freely given.
His whole "you took and took and now I have nothing" is not at all accurate, and likely not how he actually feels. It is grief at Brok being gone - not dead, gone. Completely gone, not even to be reunited with in the afterlife - because of his actions first and foremost.
Yes Brok was killed by Odin, who was brought there by Kratos and Atreus, but Brok was going to die at some point anyways, and the end result would be the same.

I absolutely love Sindri, but I feel like a lot of people look at him like almost a victim who is just giving away stuff to random people. It is important to note that from the start Kratos and Atreus weren't random people to Sindri, they were the husband and child of Faye, their friend/found family member (I don't believe the nature of their relationship with Faye is ever explicitly stated but they were close enough to make her an axe powerful enough to go toe to toe with Mjolnir which says something). The new God of War games, especially 2018, is really about Faye and her absence, because that absence shapes everything in the world around it (her meeting Kratos both caused and ended Ragnarok after all). Kratos and Atreus are both doing their quest as a debt to Faye, and Sindri and Brok are helping with that quest as a debt to Faye. That doesn't necessarily excuse Kratos and Atreus for not reciprocating Sindri's generosity, but it explains why Sindri was always so happy to give things to them
That's a good contribution of Sindri acknowledging to help Faye's family, that yea, he contributed a lot to the success of the cast, especially to Kratos and Atreus.
but I think people really do grieve for Sindri personally; losing a close family relative is hard to swallow, and harder to process.
But Sindri knew that reviving Brok was a bad idea in hindsight: confessing to Atreus about Brok's undead state and KNOWING Brok would rightfully pissed if Brok knew that was the case.
Sindri stricken by the same grief in the past and after Ragnarok. It is as valid as before, but it puts in perspective that Sindri does not want to let go, or rather, hasn't even processed his own grief in the past of reviving Brok.
What's tragic isn't how he reacted to Kratos and Atreus. It's tragic that Sindri hasn't never left his guilt and grief behind even after Brok died, especially Brok telling him to let go. I see Sindri's grief very sympathetically, but he did put on himself to revive his brother well knowing he isn't actually alive.

@@davidmcnally6791 Yeah I have to agree with you on that. Sindri was an blacksmith and offered to work on their gear. He gave Atreus the mistletoe arrows after they saved him from a DRAGON just because Atreus cared about him wanted to help him. Sindri was never forced to pushed to do something he didn't really want to other than helping Atreus with Tyr, and with that he could've easily said no. People blaming Atreus for 'using' him ignore that Sindri himself never gave any indication that he didn't want to help. They helped him and Brok in return, going out of their way to do side quests and little tasks for them when they didn't have to. Atreus was even the one that ended up pushing Sindri and Brok back together after they spent years holding a grudge against one another. Blaming Atreus, a child, when Sindrj was a full grown man capable of making his own choices doesn't sit right with me.

Sindri had one of the most incredible character arcs I can think of in any medium. It's a reminder that, in a world filled with happy or at least resolved endings with closure, sometimes things really aren't going to be ok. Ever.
I actually love that he didn't get a 'happy' conclusion at Brok's funeral. It just makes the emotions he feels so much more raw and real. His character was definitely my favorite even with the change, truly great writing.
The scene with sindri ripping atreyus apart is one of the best acted scenes not just in a video game but any type of media in general. Whoever the actor is that played him really made me believe he just lost the most important person in his life. Goosebumps
Yeah, when Atreus says he's sorry and Sindri tells him that he doesn't know what sorry means.
It actually reminds me of one of the previous scenes, when Atreus leaves for Asgard the first time after thr huge fight with everyone. When he comes back, he says that he's sorry but Sindri tells him (I can't remember the exact wording) that he can't just act out like that and then say sorry as if it magically fixes everything.
And in the same way here, Atreus says sorry but to Sindri there's nothing he can do to earn his forgiveness

The amount of forethought put into the riddle Brok asks Mimir devastated me. At first you go "It's so easy, you call yourself the smartest man alive?" He says ridiculous responses over and over throughout the story, things like Love, leading Brok to say "I don't know what fd up relationships you've been having" which gives another laugh as you're like "Man he really can't get it"
And then things rapidly turn up to eleven as you realize this moderately suspicious Tyr tricked everyone, including you, and kills Brok and it never stops. You don't remember the riddle, it couldn't be further from your mind.
Then Sindri snaps at Atreus about having given and given and given, but you still don't think of the riddle, you just hurt. You hurt so badly for this character the game made you love.
And then at the funeral he's so opposite himself, he's incapable even of making words he is so broken. He's disheveled, they did so well in making him look like a different person entirely, you don't think what the little details are in the moment, you just know the whole looks so shockingly scarily different from Brok's death onward.
And finally Mimir realizes, through the devastation of Sindri, his loss and loss and loss leading to his gaping emptiness of an existence, the answer to that comical riddle the smartest man alive simply couldn't answer. A hole. It gets bigger the more you take away.
And just like Sindri, you break. You weep. God what a beautiful and tragic story.

There's also another detail that hits me in the feels every time: Mimir, who proudly wears the title of The Smartest Man Alive, solves this riddle unexpectedly for himself and, without thinking, blurts out the answer - without glee or happy relief of a riddle-lover; he almost regrets that he said it out loud, and you can hear bitterness and grief in his voice when he says to Kratos: "Gets bigger... the more you take away."
i dont really know how to analyse it more deeply but i do also think its so interesting that sindri starts ”dissapearing” more openly in plain view after brok dies. like previously hed only teleport when others (or the camera) glanced away, like a fun or graceful trick, but now he just doesnt care anymore

I think part of Sindri's fall isn't just his giving but also his selfishness. The most glaring example is Brok. While Sindri reclaiming him from the afterlife might seem like selflessness and was motivated by love something to keep in mind is that Sindri didn't save his life. he 'undid' his death, took him from an afterlife that, by all indication. Brok was fine staying in. Because of what Sindri did, when Brok was killed by Odin he didn't just die his soul was erased from existence. Brok ceased to be and they'll never see each-other again.
I think part of what motivated Sindri was a deep need to not be alone. He Took Brok back from the afterlife, invited Kratos and Atreus to his home, and refused to recruit the dwarves for Ragnarok because he has a deep need to keep people safe. Unfortunately, that need in part ended up causing what he feared most. It's tragic, in the greek sense, something God of War hits on regularly.

The part of the soul he lost was his 'direciton', and in the mythology and the game that is what leads a soul of the Norse realm to their afterlives.
His actual fate apepars to be a Jck o lantern scenario, where.... Basically hsi soul got lost and now wanders between all the realms.
considering the implication is that there is this big void between the different mythological worlds, he might basically be there, wandering. Though knowing that fart of a dwarft he's probably singing a swarthy song, trying to find his way.
I dont think he ceased to be, if I'm not mistaken he knly lost his sense if direction? I have a theory it might tie in to the next game going to Egypt, seeing as there's a lot of lore around death in Egyptian mythology. I Don think he will come back, but maybe they can give him rest.

When asked Mimir doesn't say Broks soul is lost he says " There is nothing to bring back." Broks soul was supposed to remain I'm the lake of Souls before becoming one with the Light of Alfheim, like Fayes did. With it unable to get back to the light it's very possible that his soul simply dissolved.

So even if they called for him, he would not answer. There's nothing to bring back because that would imply that Brok would know someone's calling him, and probably give him a sense of direction where they are, but he doesn't have direction.

maybe it's because it's just a videogame character, but even I never found myself taking notice of how much Sindri would give to the two protagonists. An incredibly smart and interesting decision for the character honestly.
25:40 I like this scene because Sindri is at first angry towards Kratos (and in pain), but deep down he knows Kratos doesn't deserves such treatment (anymore at least), but he still feels those feelings of suffering. He acheived his revenge, but he is still conflicted, confused, and therefore decides to leave in silence, just like Kratos did after the events of 3 (probably your theory of him moving out somewhere else isn't so far fetched, as his revenge arch is almost parallel to Kratos'). What I do know from this scene is that Sindri knows his anger isn't justified anymore, since Odin is dead, and will probably realise the error of his ways and change for the better (as some say, when you're rock bottom, you can only go up).

what gets me is broks funeral song is played through the entire game in different sections but the tempo is much faster and the octaves are higher and it sounds more whimsical and playful and here at a slow tempo and lower registers it becomes somber and heartbreaking. The exact same notes and the same progression can have different feels based how it is played. Music is crazy man.

Few things shows that Sindri still has some care left for Kratos and Atreus. When Thrud attacked Atreus he wanted to help him, he also accepted Kratos presence on the funreal and even let him help push boat with Brok body. He is not ready to accept Brok death and forgive them or himself for that but there is some chance that he will reunite with them in future. I hope we will get that in some future game.
He needs other peoples' company too much for him to completely push everyone away.

Sindri is the textbook definition of the caregiver in a codependent relationship. I think there is A LOT of unknown trauma with Sindri and Brok, their past and their family. Because of that, he has learned to not actually process his emotions, just put on a kind, happy, ok face, until he comes to a breaking point (Brok's initial death, his total death, etc.). Once broken, all that has taken over is anger, revenge and grief. I am not discounting the issues and ways he has been taken advantage of by other characters. I do believe he has every right to be angry and upset at them, for feeling like he has gotten nothing in return BUT, just like a lot of people who have experienced trauma and have fallen into the caregiver role in some form or another, instead of actually saying something it all festered and resentment grew. It just needed something to break it so it could be loosed. One other thing that was frustrating to me is Atreus is still a child. Yes, he has had to grow up quickly for a multitude of reasons but he's still a kid. Sindri's attachment and what he expected out of the relationship between him and Atreus was not balanced because Sindri is the adult. It wasn't going to be equal and without any boundaries put in place initially by Sindri, the codependency was going to continue and he was never going to get anything more out of it.
I've watched many of your videos on GOW characters and love how you do mention that nothing is cut and dry. A good, well written character is complex and makes you think. And I wholeheartedly agree. But I don't think the basis of a relationship with Atreus is AS complex because of one being an adult and the other a child. I've also seen said in some other comments, a lot of this was self inflicted by Sindri. I agree. It's trauma based self sabotage that leads to a lot of Sindri's decisions and his codependent need to CARE for someone. Because he thinks his value is based upon his ability to give, care and for how much others need him.
TL;DR: Sindri, just like everyone else in these games, needs a therapist who can introduce needed coping skills to help process trauma.

I feel that the music of the funeral is so important to the whole scene. Raebs lament starts with a semblance of hope with its rising melody and inspiring lyrics. But the end of the song matches up with sindris fall back into despair. It’s beautiful and gut wrenching at the same time. The motif of grief, hope and despair all played out in 5 minutes.
The problem with Sindri is that he never set any boundaries. He just let people walk all over him. Even if he was doing it out of kindness, the worst thing you can do is act like you're fine with a decision when you aren't, because you'll become bitter towards your friends that made the decision for you. Once you disappear, you're both hurt by the sudden loss of a good friend, and they'll wonder what they did wrong. Be upfront about stuff you dislike, because at the end of the day, people will respect you more for it.
also important is that if you consider sidequest canon then Kratos even in the first game would have done favours for him if asked. Atreus got them to help out other random people. in fact Kratos is very gracious (even if he finds it difficult to show it) when people treat him well. had Sindri or Brok asked him for anything I've no doubt Kratos would have just gone and done it by the second game.

Some interesting character continuity here. Of the Huldra Brothers, Sindri was always the one who was worse about holding grudges and generally refusing to let go. Remember their feud in GoW 2018? Yeah, both brothers badmouthed each other, but as we figure out through the game, Brok is just ALWAYS badmouthing people. He doesn't really mean any of it and he still cares about Sindri, even going so far as to ask Atreus how he's doing, and when Sindri shows up wanting to reconcile Brok is immediately receptive. But Sindri? Nary a good word about Brok comes out of his mouth and it takes a hurtful lashing out from Atreus for him to even entertain the idea that their feud might not have been all Brok's fault. Sindri never shows any concern for Brok until after they reconcile, and even goes so far as to be incredulous when told that Brok is concerned about him. This trait stays with him in Ragnarok. Note nobody in the house - not even Brok - holds Atreus running to Asgard against him...except Sindri. Sindri genuinely seemed to have taken it personally that Atreus didn't listen and got him hurt
Sindri turning his back on Atreus was set up all the way back in GoW4. He's been a vindictive man with a propensity for grudges from the moment we've met him.

I partially disagree on both instances.
Sindri didn't see a reason to worry about Brok's well being precisely because he knew his brother beter than anyone. The only thing threatening Brok when he and Sindri were separate was loneliness; but since Brok was the one walking out of the relationship (which he admitted in GoW: Ragnarok), Sindri was resentful and thought "well if you don't need me, then I don't need you too" - which was not true: Sindri needed Brok desperately, that is why he brought his brother up in every conversation ("it's all you ever talk about, over and over!" (c) Atreus).
And speaking of Atreus - he and Sindri were through _a lot_ together. The dwarf covered the boy's back when they visited Shrines of the Giants in Midgard; they were "partners", as Sindri put it, - so Atreus' indifference towards his opinion about going to Asgard (remember, they argued heatedly before Kratos came in to demand his son's answer) was taken by Sindri as disregard of their shared friendship. They were closer to each other than anyone except their respective family; and anyone would be insulted if their best friend ignored their advice and throw them out of his way violently.
That is not to say that Sindri is a perfect character; he's just very sensitive, that's all. He's been giving and giving and giving what was his to his friends because he greatly and deeply appreciated them, and wanted to "keep them out of harm's way".
I was absolutely devastated by what happened to Sindri, and when he finally let loose on Atreus at Tyr's temple after Brock's death... I felt like a piece of crap IRL. This is without a doubt one of the top 3 memorable and heart tugging moments I've ever experienced playing a video game ever. EVER. My hats off to the story writers.
I love the fact that the end of the game was the funeral of a side character.

Seeing this atm probably wasn't very smart... I got a call today that my little brother tried to commit suicide last night. That funeral scene was almost me, and seeing it made me burst to tears. I always assume that Sindri was kind to/loved Atreus b/c he was Faye's last legacy. I was always wondered if the brothers love Faye like a crush hence why they were willing to help Kratos and Atreus.
Before you asked about the axe, the axe is just tool built for her and Faye give to Kratos to protect their son and they do repair whenever Kratos give it to them. I feel like the axe kinda belongs to all of them while Atreus is the last piece of Faye's that they are willing to protect as well.
I think most painful thing is that Aterus is not there for the funeral. Sindri probably think that Atreus doesn't care and Atreus didnt about the funeral because he was doing his goal to find all the giants...if there is another game, I wonder if they will point this out.
Nice video and I think it is possible to add a detail that was surprisingly unnoticed. Sindri has this mysophobia (intense and irrational fear of germs, dirt or contamination) and during the whole game he can barely touch anything that is not perfectly clean, even wearing his gloves. But after Brok’s death, Sindri wears gloves no more and shows up at his brother’s funeral completely dirty. Poor Sindri is so destroyed that he simply gave up and cares no more, not even about himself.
18:30 So glad you made that point. It was a bit frustrating to hear some prominent streamers brush Sindris’s transformation off as an overreaction to his brother’s death. I would argue that the disappointment doesn’t even come from not getting anything in return for constantly giving. The disappointment and devastation come from him finally realising that he and Brok were always just collateral characters in what Sindri thought was their family. I feel like this was perfectly conveyed when he said “some of us were bigger fools than others”, and “there is no we, there’s only you”.
While I agree Sindri anger over his brothers death isn’t an overreaction. But his anger shouldn’t even be directed at Atreus. Remember kratos did not want the brothers to be involved in the fight against Odin but they wanted to get revenge for Odin did to their people. Odin killed Brok not Atreus. I also agree that sindri needs time ti grief but the blame is not on Atreus nor kratos.
@@chizzytheguy4990 I think the anger towards Atreus was because of how the former has acted in the past, don't forget the 'little people with little problems' comment, Sindri forgave the comment but never forgot it.
Then more recently, Atreus was performing some very dangerous stunts behind Kratos' back like visiting Jormungander and a vengeful Freya without any real plan or thoughts of the consequences, of which Sindri tried to remind him only to be ignored.
This only built up more during Atreus's rebellion in which he turned into a bear and mauled Sindri, even when Sindri was visibly hurt and showed disaproval, atreus never once apologised or thanked Sindri for what he did, all the while this happened inside Sindri's own home that he thanklessly let Kratos and Atreus stay in.
His comment of Atreus always taking until nothing was left was hardly undeserved, had Atreus heeded the others warnings, thought of others, been more cautious, stopped filling his head with the idea of being a champion, they may have avoided Odin's trap altogether and Brok wouldn't have died.

Right up until Atreus's search for Tyr Kratos and Atreus just minded their own business and just killed people who got in their way. Kratos told Atreus to stop his search for Tyr and even Odin told him too. He kept going back to Asgard even though his father warned him. He trusted and even helped Odin. Sindri could be angry on many people and many things. Maybe he was angry on himself for not telling Brok, maybe he was angry that he is the reason Brok will not go to the afterlife, maybe he was angry on Atreus because he thinks Atreus caused Brok's death, maybe he is angry on Atreus for apologizing because he assumed his apology did not come straight from the heart, maybe he was angry on himself for choosing to be a part of things that did not directly affect him. He can't see Atreus's intention all he can see Atreus as is the person that caused Brok's death (unintentionally). Maybe he still needed some time to get over the negative feelings he felt after Brok's death and since Kratos and Atreus went right after Brok's death he might have not been able to process it properly due it being a recent event and it being so serious. Also Atreus figures out later throughout the game that Kratos is going to die. While they still prevented Ragnarok Brok got killed over the mask. If Atreus did not visit Asgard he would not figure out about the mask. Kratos telling Odin he wouldn't stop searching for Tyr was his greatest mistake. Odin was a master of deception and everyone walked right into his trap. N Brok got himself killed too. He knew way too much. He knew things he should not have known. Maybe Sindri is angry because he regrets getting Brok back to life. The dwarves did not go against Odin. Sindri ahouldn't have let Kratos and Atreus stay at his place. By doing it he put himself and Brok in danger. Maybe Sindri is angry because Atreus kept taking stupid decisions and doing stupid things and now that is why he does not have his brother. Maybe Sindri is angry because Brok was the only family Sindri had.

He even tried to talk to Sindri one on one about the bear thing, but Sindri wasn't having it; so Atreus heeded the council of both his father figures and gave Sindri space. I feel it's worth mentioning that while it's not entirely clear how long a period GoW Ragnarok takes place, it's likely only a handful of weeks at most, so there genuinely just wasn't time to give Sindri the space he needed and then talk about what happened.
Sindri is a good example of someone who gives so much of themselves to others, that eventually they lose themselves in the process. His story arc is honestly quite haunting to me.

This is one take, but there's another take here that you didn't look at.
Sindri was already broken. People that constantly give and give like he does (not even in a 'I see you needed this so I'm helping you out' but more of a 'take this cool thing you didn't ask for') are generally people that can't stand to be alone, but don't know how to make friends legitimately. He's a craftsman so he's trying to show his worth to them, to essentially 'buy' his way into their good graces. Kratos's first line about him of being of no importance stung more than he let on and he spends his time trying to prove them wrong the only way he knows how. Hell, even his one-upmanship with his brother over the upgrades was just a way for him to be close to his brother while not actually being close to his brother. The guy suffers from separation anxiety. Make no mistake by the way. Sindri was the one that put Atreus on the path to those shrines. He was the one leading them there. He even admits that he was the one that told him about them at the start of the game. Because he wanted to do something with him. He wanted a bonding activity with him.
The scene at the forge after, there's a note there as well that gets over looked. The hate and anger, he's spouting at them, but I don't think its aimed at them. It's aimed at himself. He blames himself for it. 'If I hadn't of done all those things, brok would be alive'. He's even on his way to healing at the end. At the funeral, he's hesitant to leave. If he was still completely engulfed by rage he would have watched the arrow fly, set the boat on fire, then turn and leave abruptly. He doesn't though, he hesitates, like he wants to talk to them, but stops himself. And this is where the other meaning for the forge scene kicks in: where before he suffered from separation anxiety, now he suffers from the 'cursed' mentality. He lost the person closest to him 'twice' and so he thinks that anyone close to him is in danger. That's why he spurned them away, its why he didn't say anything at the funeral. If he was blaming them, he wouldn't so quickly volunteer to help in ragnarock, he would have sat back and done nothing when Atreus was attacked. But he didn't. He still acted when he was needed.
I also STRONGLY disagree with the 'he gets nothing in return'. That's a load of crap. Yes, he doesn't get anything material, but he gets a lot back from helping them. They can do the physical things that he cannot. They can appreciate his craftsmanship and, frankly, act as guinea pigs for his ideas in the field. They were able to build there new home in yggsdrasil because of them, and he got back together with his brother because of them. He also got companionship which is what he was desperately needing. Plus, ya know, getting to live through ragnarock and they took care of odin for him where he couldn't put him down by himself.
His issue isn't rage at others, its self loathing now, but I foresee that being resolved in the next game, much the same way freya's rage was here.
the other issue is that Kratos and Atreus are in a habit of helping people (even if begrudingly in the first game). Had he asked I've no doubt they'd have done anything for him within reason. you are correct in that Sindri already has issues. he gives to feel useful and so by extension actually asking would feel like the others might turn on him over it.
The other problem is Kratos isn't good with people so he's not the type to make clear that he would help and rarely offers to help unless it's obvious to even a blind man you need it.

It can be very hard to actually ask for help.
You can be near your breaking point. And people can tell you they appreciate you. And you want to ask them for something but just.... can't
For some reason or other, you just won't ask.
Maybe you'll just expect them to offer it. Or you'll feel its never the right time.
You give and give and give, and get nothing in return, until you break and lash out. And that's the only way you'll ever get any help. Cuz its only at that point that people realize you want help, that you need help.
You could ask at any time, and they'd be happy to do it. But something just stops you from asking, and you can't articulate your feelings. And no one notices it because you push it aside to help them again. Because you love helping people. Sometimes not even realize this is eating you up inside
So yeah, he could have asked for help or a favour at any time. But not everyone is able to do that. Its not a fair way to think. To expect people to somehow know what you want. But its a mindset that's incredibly hard to get out of because you can't articulate it
@@kharnthebetrayer8251 that's what I mean. Sindri could solve his problems if he'd have asked. his existing issues prevent that and while Kratos probably would do pretty much anything asked he's also less socially aware than the average person and so even less likely to notice something is up.
Sindri can be a great antihero if he continues this path. He just wanted to hold onto the only family he had, and yet lost it all. He knows what he did was wrong but we can understand his rage. Reminds me of someone else.

Do note the small detail of Sindri NOT sleeping, not taking his own advice that which he gave to Atreus, thus he is thinking so much, that his mind is in need of reorganization but that was him before the loss of his brother.
Sindri's grief really parallels Freya's. She lashed out and tried to take out her anger on Kratos when, in reality, she believes herself responsible for Baldur's death. Sindri is obviously angry at everyone for being fooled, but he absolutely blames himself for not just putting Brok in danger but denying him an afterlife because of his own mistakes.
Sindri is the manifestation of the “No good deed goes unpunished”, sadly the world always seeks to break us, but it is up to us if we remain broken or we change into something else.
Maybe the answer to Broks riddle being “A hole” and the riddle question itself is a representation of Sindris character ark

The whole game is building on the tension that an important death is coming, the death of Kratos. This is how to subvert expectations. The writing of this game is shockingly complete. Absolute masterpiece
One might say they avoided kratos' predicted death and caused another death in its place. The actions almost lead up to it

@@VOID-GRIMM_Sinn I think Atreus looking for Tyr almost made the prophecy happen. If Kratos didn't change and Brok hadn't pointed out the flaws in what fake Tyr was saying, that could have been it right there. Odin leads them to war disguised as Tyr and has the mask, leading to Kratos dying.
honestly at the end of the game and kratos was telling artreus the story of the old man who called for death i thought he might sill die BECAUSE odin had just killed an important character

I loved the inclusion of Sindri's story in Ragnarok. It felt like it was written by someone who lost as a letter to others who have lost.
I've been in Sindri's shoes in losing both the most important person in my life and my sibling... that's what grief looks like. That's what it feels like. All the feelgood bullshit is a lie. The fact that nobody else cares as much as you do is a constant wound. The fact that you were powerless to help and that nobody else helped either is proof that the universe is a bastard. And you wish with all your heart that there's some kind of violence that would numb the pain, or that at least someone would kill you or hurt you so much that you look like how you feel. But there isn't.
The thing is, that never goes away. Every once in a while, you'll feel like you did the day it happened. It'll always be there to remind you of your loss. That's why Sindri wouldn't accept any comfort from Kratos or Atreus. He'll always look at them and know that they don't carry that knife in their side like he does. He knows that they'll heal from this grief. Everyone will, except him. And to a degree, he doesn't want to. Sindri's character is always trying to hold onto everything. That's why he shows love by giving. But now, that pain is a monument to Brok, and he's going to hold onto it out of love for Brok.
You don't need any more reason for Sindri to act the way he does after losing Brok. That's real grief. That's real sorry.

I understand that. I felt that. I know it doesn't mean to any strangers. I just find it sad that some people really think it is unreasonable to blame Atreus, simply because he is a child. As if no child can ever make mistakes or be held responsible to a degree. It doesn't change what happened and that hollowing pain in the chest doesn't help either.

Kinda understand how sindri feels, when you consider someone a true friend, you just wanna make them happy and shower them with gifts.
Kratos and Freya being allowed to attend and perform important roles at the funeral shows that Sindri still wants them in his life, although Kratos offering condolences proved to be too much and caused him to shut down some more.
I honestly loved the way Sindri’d arch slowly unfolded. One thing I did notice when he went to fetch Draupnir was his reluctance at the idea of letting it go despite Brok’s assurances that they would be fine. I feel like Sindri’s quiet character flaw is his inability to let go and it takes him to places we wouldn’t usually expect. I was okay with Sindri’s resurrection of Brok up until we went to see the Lady, I was surprised that not only did Sindri lie to his brother but he gaslight him telling him he was “too uncouth”to see the Lady and pay her the proper deference. Also him bringing Brok back cost Brok community, none of the dwarves want anything to do with him and he doesn’t even know why. Even his anger was strange, I understand him being angry at Atreus but it feels as though he never directs it anywhere else, not Kratos the adult, nor Mimir or Freya who knew Tyr and could have sensed something wrong to me at least it felt like he lashed out at Atreus because he was the weakest link there in terms of agonizing over Brok’s death.
Atreus was the one who started looking for Tyr after all, and Sindri was helping him the entire time. And aside from Brok, he seemed closest to Atreus out of all of them. Helped the kid every chance he got, even when he didn't have to.
He lashed out to Atreus because he had given to Atreus the most and all of his actions led to Brok's death and Sindri losing more and more

It would be nice but I do not think it would be likely. Atreus is the very last person Sindri would want help from. Even if Atreus is the last person in the world aside from Sindri, I doubt the latter will want the former's help.

Sindri is a victim of what happens when the unfairness of life leaves you the odd man out. It is something that can't be fixed. It can't be made right. He's not just struggling with Brok's death he's also struggling with the shattering of his own identity. The guilt he feels because he doesn't just blame them....he blames himself. He is lobbying the anger at them because he's feeling it towards himself. This is his way of avoiding facing his own guilt for not having saved his brother's soul in the first place.
Just wanted to acknowledge how surprisingly powerful the dwarves are. Sindri showed how much destruction he can cause during the war.
Sindri not saying anything to Kratos when he finally tried comforting him during the funeral was epic, Sindri saying nothing because he knows Kratos has felt the same way but doesn't care because of his culpability, Kratos saying nothing more because he knows it won't make any difference to Sindri who is now walking the same road he once did.
I think there's potential for Freya to help Sindri heal. She tried to save Brok and she also lost her family, so Sindri might be more receptive to her than he would be with the others.
That would be an interesting dynamic considering he was indirectly responsible for her son’s death. I was kinda surprised they only addressed that a little in the story

@@morevillfilms6562 yes, but Sindri doesn't know that and he misguidedly blames Kratos and Atreus for Brok's death. He won't be on speaking terms with Kratos until someone else helps him process his grief.
Atreus says thank you more than kratos. So to an extent you can tell he cares more verbally than his father expresses.
A detail I liked about Sindri’s fall: before Brock’s death he always used his teleportation powers with finesse; walking off-screen or behind an object to use it. Now he simply teleports, not caring for any flare or if anyone sees him
The ways the characters develop gets you so hooked and sometimes makes you sad with
Sindri's grief is an absolute normal response and I feel like it helps represent those who ARE grieving, it gives them an outlet to realize that they're ok and they're not alone, their feelings are a normal process and it's ok

Good video. It really captures what makes a story a tragedy: a character’s virtues or virtuous actions leading to them suffering.
It feels very similar to something someone said about one of my favourite books, "In a story about recovery, it's just as important to show what happens to those who fail or choose not to move on and grow from their past as it is to show the recovery process in other characters".
Sindri and Brok are the characters I didn't expect to be emotionally attached to.
The fact that the last thing we hear from Sindri is him growling in response to Kratos trying to talk to him is poetic to say the least
There are 3 things one must fear above all else: a storm in the deep sea, howling in the night, and the wrath of a kind person...
One of the things I noticed was the tone change in Brok & SIndri's theme in every scene Sindri is present in after Brok's death. I think it hit home how volatile and angry he became.
Though I'd also want to point out one detail that was missed here, and that was how Sindri blamed himself for Brok missing a part of his soul after bringing him back to life when he told Atreus the story. We then here from Mimir that this means Brok is denied an afterlife, a notion which I would think would lead Sindri to blame himself now for Brok not getting an afterlife. I think this plays both into how he blames himself in part for everything that happened. I also think it's why he told Odin "this is what comes next" after destroying his soul, it's not just poetic irony for Odin, but also for Sindri to be the one to do it, to exact the same fate on Odin that Odin brought on his brother.
He’s also the only one not to wear a red uniform to the final battle. Instead he wears the blood of his lost brother.
