This video is a personal one from me to our supporters to explain the deception that took place in making the Netflix series Tiger King and to thank you for the many expressions of support we have received.
Most of you know me, but for any who don’t, I’m Howard Baskin, Carole’s husband, and her partner in operating the sanctuary. This video may be rather halting because I am not used to making them and had to start and stop at times.
For those who don’t know, there was a documentary a few years ago called Blackfish that revealed abuse at Sea World and had a dramatic impact. Five years ago Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, the people who made Tiger King, approached us saying they wanted to make the Blackfish of captive big cats.
We have turned down a number of people who approached us wanting to film after the arrest of Joe Exotic because we didn’t feel we could trust them to do something meaningful instead of something sensational.
We did a little homework on Eric and Rebecca. Eric had turtle sanctuary, so he had something of an animal welfare background. Rebecca showed us the resume one of their top production people. He had worked on another award winning animal advocacy documentary called The Cove that exposed the slaughter of dolphins Japan. So we trusted Eric and Rebecca when they said this documentary would expose the abuse that tiger cubs endure when used for petting and the miserable lives they lead in roadside zoos if they survive. We believed them when they said Joe Exotic would not be the main focus.
We also believed Eric and Rebecca when they said they felt they had to mention the disappearance of Carole’s husband Don 23 years ago as part of the background on her life, but that it would be done respectfully and truthfully. Not only did they lie about that, they never even gave us the opportunity to respond to some of the false claims.
In a way the series is about con artists. People like Joe Exotic and Doc Antle who con people out of their money by convincing them that petting tiger cubs does something for conservation. In my view the biggest con artists of them all turned out to be the directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin. I believe they are totally devoid of integrity, that they don’t care at all about the animals, and that they clearly, clearly don’t care about the truth.
In my opinion, as far as I can tell, all they wanted to do was make something as inflammatory and salacious as possible that Netflix would pay millions for. They betrayed not only us but also the animals.
Some of you have had a chance to spend time with Carole in person. Anyone who spends an hour with Carole would come away knowing without any question that she had no role in Don’s disappearance and the stupid rumors Don’s family viciously spread to disparage Carole about meat grinders and septic tanks are just nonsense.
I don’t have a way to arrange for each of you to spend that hour with Carole. So I thought the next best thing I could do try to show you who she is would be to share a minute or two of my personal experience by telling you a little bit about what it is like to be her husband and partner in this mission to stop big cat abuse.
We are getting nasty messages from people who believe Joe Exotic when he said our cages are small. Those of you have visited know that our smallest enclosure is about the size of a small house, 1200 sf, and some are over an acre. You know that the weeds Joe refers to are the natural terrain our cats live in. That is in contrast to the tiny barren chain link prison cells at Joe’s zoo where the cats walk or pebbles.
When journalist Robert Moor created the Joe Exotic podcast for Wondery, at the end he went through all of the lies Joe had told him. Tiger King doesn’t even tell people that when Joe was claiming to be a country western singer, he was paying Danny Clinton and Vince Johnson to write and sing the songs and Joe was just lip syncing.
All that being said, there is still a silver lining in all this. The series is reaching millions of people who probably never had any idea of the disreputable nature of the people who operate these exploitative cub petting operations. Hopefully some of the viewers will come away realizing they should not support the abuse by patronizing these places.
If you have taken the time to listen to this, I thank you. And mostly I thank you on behalf of Carole and myself and our staff and volunteers for your support during a time when we have to deal with this betrayal on top of dealing with the Corona Virus. With your continued support, we will put an end to the abuse of big cats in captivity!
Carole should feel relieved that they are finally reopening the investigation into her husband Don's death...I mean if she has nothing to hide maybe they will find out what actually happened to him?

"Everyone involved is a so called Animal Advocate, not a single Animal benefited in this war...not a single one." I think that was the single greatest comment made in the whole series. Everyone involved were part of a greedy self serving war that had more to do with personal and monentary gain and nothing to do with the Animals. I think we all witnessed how the evils of humanity don't only prey on humans. I am not taking sides based off of a tv show so I wish your cause the best and hope that someday keeping big cats in cages ends. Howard, you are a wise man!
The war we were talking about winning was the war to protect big cats from being bred for life in cages and to save them from extinction in the wild. We are winning, battle after battle and are closer to that goal now than ever before. I am so sorry to learn that the Netflix series turned out like this. Thank goodness for the chance so many of us have had to watch and listen to Carol, and see first hand the wonders of Big Cat Rescue. We already know the deep well of goodness there. +Claire Docherty, we have a small paid staff that does administrative work. The cat care is all done by volunteers who donate their time to care for the cats, similar to your local animal shelter who has volunteers who care for the cats and dogs there. It takes about $10,000/year/cat to provide USDA food for the cats and vet care. We also give thousands a year to work around the world to save big cats in the wild. BigCatRescue.org/Insitu

You have any idea what it costs to run a sanctuary that size?! The cost isimmense even for my small local sanctuary who takes care of a few Cougars, Bobcats, orphaned fawns and Eagles. I mean just look at all the vet cost they have taking care of the cougar named Mickey. He unfortunately ended up passing away but it wasn't for a lack of trying. He just couldn't overcome the physical damage his years of abuse caused. he had teeth pulled and two orthopedic surgeries, any idea what something like that cost for a wild cat?! Look up some of the MANY big cat rescue videos that show the step by step process of rescuing these gorgeous creatures. I don't know about any of the interpersonal stuff that the Netflix show talked about, all I know is that this big cat rescue sanctuary is the only one out of all of them that actually does anything good and doesn't just exploit and abuse animals. These people are actually trying to help.

I will always support BCR. I’ve never seen any form of abuse towards the big cats. They do everything for their cats. They treat them with respect. If a cat at BCR has health problems they have a vet help them right away. The cats there live over their life expectancy. That should tell you everything you need to know.Carole and her husband are amazing people,and they do NOT deserve this.

I firmly believe the principle of cub petting etc is wrong, however I do believe there is an element of hypocrisy in the running of big cat rescue. As for the disappearance that’s a whole different can of worms.

The Lion Whisperer, says the same thing as you do in the respect that petting zoos are so bad for the cats. That many of the cats that grow too big for the petting zoos end up being sold to canned hunts.

why do you have 100s of volunteers if there is only 1 day when people come to "sanctuary"?
+Shahzeb Afroze, we have an event one day a year where people can come and walkaround without being on a guided tour. It is called the WildCat Walkabout. I didn't believe the documentary. I could see that your highly regarded rescue and advocacy projects don't jive with your portrayal in the series. I am hoping that most people will be able to figure this out and that the publicity will only help you.

Thank you Howard, for so eloquently responding to the hate and vitriol that has been spewed in your and Carole's direction. I know that while Carole is used to this sort of hateful nonsense, it does not make it any less difficult to deal with.
I only hope that with time and patience those of us that love and support you and BCR, can educate those people who came to attack BCR. And change their attacks against BCR into a wave of change against those who still exploit the cats.

+Yo Ezzy, we do have a paid staff. Volunteers come to the sanctuary and donate their time to care for the cats similar to how people donate their time to care for cats and dogs at your local animal shelter.
Most sanctuary places do not have fully paid staff a lot of them are run and funded by the amazing volunteers who offer up their time to both help the sanctuary itself along with all the fantastic animals who are being taken care of there if the people felt they needed to be paid they would not show up they work with them for the betterment of the cats both I ruching their lives and those around them
It’s not like they don’t know they’re not getting g paid!! A lot of times people need public service hours for degrees or to get into college etc. Retirees love stuff like this!! They already get paid , they just need to do something. Do you really think that these people don’t know they don’t get a check?? Come on. Mind your business
Do you understand what a charity is
My biggest take away from the documentary was the point that was made about Big Cat Rescue being the same devil as GW Zoo. To me that is a valid argument. If you are charging for admission to “raise awareness” then is that really a sanctuary? A sanctuary should be a controlled environment where these animals have no interaction with humans. You are still profiting off of the animal’s captivation. The other takeaway for me is that there is no hope for the animals in the wild. All of these organizations are doing nothing to build the population in the wild, or stop the poaching of wild cats. And to me, that’s like being so concerned with part of the problem, that you ignore the cause of the problem. The one guy in the documentary made a good point when he said “if the species is endangered, you make more of them”. And while he may not be a good person, he’s not wrong. If BCR had their way and took everyone’s tigers, they’d have a nice zoo for a few years, then their tigers would die off, then the issues in the wild would continue and then all tigers would be extinct. It just doesn’t feel like fighting the private ownership of big cats is really the best use of funds if you really want to rescue Big Cats.
It’s illegal to set a captive born big cat free. Lots of good reasons why here: BigCatRescue.org/gofree But the important thing to consider is that our vision is a world where all wild cats live free and the best way to do that is to stop the cub petting industry, which produces more than 200 wild cat cubs every year, and to phase out private ownership of big cats. None of those cats can ever go free and instead they end up being killed for their parts. That stimulates demand for their parts, which then puts more pressure on wild cats in the wild for two reasons. 1. It’s always cheaper to poach a tiger than to raise it up to adult size. 2. People who want tiger parts for tonics want the “wild” tiger as it is considered more potent. You can end the abuse of big cats being bred for life in prison at BigCatAct.com
As stated above, why do u profit off showing big cats?

With over $4.5 million in revenue annually , where does the money come from , and where does it go ?

You can find out more about that at CharityNavigator.com. 100% of donations go to the cats. The income from guided tours, online sales go to pay the small staff that does the administrative work. The cat care is done by volunteers who donate their time to care for the cats, similar to how pet rescues operate with volunteers. Donations pay for the high grade commercial meat fed to the cats. It also helps provide vet care and the medications needed by many of the elderly cats. Many of our cats are over the age of 20. In the wild they would only live to be 10-12 but at BCR they live into their late teens/early 20s because of the high quality food and outstanding vet care, so many have old age issues such as arthritis and are on medications and supplements daily. What are the program expenses? And why can't volunteers just be paid workers? Administration gets paid, that doesn't sound nonprofit. Nobody chooses to work on Christmas and not get paid(but some of your workers did). If you could help me understand that would be nice.
I'm sharing this on my Facebook as I've seen some friends have watched it and apparently love it. From what I've seen, people are fascinated by Joe due to his eccentric behavior. I can only hope that they don't believe whatever he says. I am refusing to watch Tiger King.

I already never believed that carole had anything to do with carole’s other husband. I have never met her but I can just tell from the videos i’ve watched with her in them.
edit: either way i never really trust documentaries because most aren’t made by the people they are about so i just never believe them

Ok, I have read and also cross referenced articles and videos on this and made myself more educated on this topic. So people like “joe exotic” are a contributing factor to big cats being in cages for life. I have always supported conservation such as the Irwin family and I now realize you all are legitimate but the netflix series made big cat rescue seem crazy and seem crazy as a whole by the way the stories were laid out. Seems like it done more harm than good.
Joe Exotic was outta line and waaaayyyyy over the top but if Carole was innocent she would’ve laughed it off and ignored it. Innocent people don’t react like she did😬

I do have a question about finances. You say that volunteers take care of the animals outside of the salary received by Howard, Carole and Jamie Murdock. If so, who is the $524,007 going that’s marked on the 2018 990 as other salaries and wages (not counting the three mentioned above that’s already reported elsewhere on the form) which $456,722 is marked as a program expense?

I find it ridiculous that you find the Documentary isn't taking a stance on Big Cat Animal abuse. The series takes a deep rabbit hole dive into the bubble world of big cat trading and cub petting. And with that deep dive comes all the details and spotlighting of eccentrics. It may seem like a contradiction, but I don't believe the documentary would have gained the attention without its "sensationalism". People got addicted to the show because of all the crazy people and the mischievousness around Carole Baskin (and every other Carole Baskin) The Documentary still ends with a statement about how much Big Cats are affected when everyone running these Rescues and Zoos are more involved with there own egos than the cats. I can strongly say I will never attend a Zoo or Circus or support any form of undomesticated animal captivity. Your cute videos of Tigers eating popsicles didn't do that. Tiger King convinced me of that.

Everyone seems to forget that Joe was exposed as a teen for shooting birds so he could pretend to raise them from the dead.

Pay your staff dont give them special shirts

The cat care is done by volunteers who donate their time to care for the cats just like people donate their time to care for cats and dogs at your local animal shelter. Our shirt colors is so everyone knows who can care for which cats. Each color shirt can care for certain cats. It is a safety for the keeper and the cats. +Zombie, big cats born in captivity can never be released back to the wild. They are taken from their mother moments after birth. They would stay with their mother for 2 years in the wild to learn how to hunt and survive. Many have been declawed by their former owners. It is also illegal to release them back to the wild. Why hasnt Carol stepped up to the plate and addressed this herself. With all the social media presence focused on her, she should use this to her advantage instead of hiding behind her husband. I feel like all parties in that documentary series are at some level responsible for the use of tigers in entertainment. Including Big Cat Rescue. Maybe not to the extent of Joe Exotic or Doc Antle. But the peddling of tickets to see these animals in any way is in my opinion wrong

Good or bad, this documentary shed some light on this industry for sure. Is Carol guilty? I don’t care. Is Joe exotic crazy? I don’t care. I don’t believe any of these people are completely innocent. I’ve never met either of you, but I never doubted you or Carole or the mission to end Big Cat abuse. I didn’t even watch Tiger King series until this year, Oct of 2022, as I could tell by the comments of others how much of it was about Joe Exotic and was simply just sensationalism. I’ve followed BCR for @ 6yrs now & know how wrong they were to misdirect Joes’ claims & accusations against Carole & the Sanctuary. This series could have done so much good for the Cats , but was mostly just sensationalized to draw the masses rather than to help the Cats. I ALWAYS supported Carole & BCR when the chance arose & explained what the real goal was supposed to be about-saving the Cats from abusive & neglectful owners & educating the masses how to end this & protect the wild populations. I didn’t bother to watch the second as I expected more of the same trashy misrepresentation of the issues. But I thank you, Howard, for this expression of honesty as I think people needed to hear it-about WHY you did the show anyway and to show a calm and rational explanation of why you participated when it mostly was about Joe instead of what you intended it to be about. Sadly , money talks louder than integrity these days.

I was about 9 years old when I witnessed my first roadside zoo. It was in a privately owned campground in which my family stopped for one night. They had an elephant, chained at one front leg and the opposite back leg. She could take one step forward and one step backwards, and she "paced" that way nonstop. My little sister and I just stood and cried...so angry, so hurt...so helpless to help her. That poor elephant haunts me to this day, (I am now 65 years old).
What you are doing, Carole, and what your husband did with you is of such enormous value! You deserve ALL the praise and absolutely none of the false accusations. I am incensed at the way the "documentary" treats you, and at the way people are buying into it and spreading the lies. There is a sad trend toward hatefulness and willful ignorance in our country today, and this "documentary" is the just sort of thing that feeds it. Yes, we have been watching the Netflix series, but I am also an avid watcher of Big Cat Rescue's channel, so I already know that the portrayal of your site is decidedly skewed. We also know, from personal experience, that when it comes to marriage, divorce, death and inheritances, family issues and personal grudges can become seriously overblown and out of rational proportion. Any outsider (the documentary team, Joe Exotic, and the other exotic animal 'keepers') inserting themselves into someone else's personal story will never be able to understand the whys and wherefores of events and how and why they played out the way they did because they weren't there, and are relying on anecdotal evidence that can be emotionally biased. Such as her ex-husband's family, they were emotionally damaged by his betrayal and subsequent abandonment, so they have a very serious axe to grind, BUT there could have been so much more going on within that marriage before he met Carol and he could have left anyway, it's just easier to blame and demonize Carol than admit that your relationship is failing all on its own. This why they have to try and present as balanced and unbiased a story as possible, this was not so; this was the 'Joe Exotic and friends vilify Carol Baskin Show.' When we saw the Joe Exotic has a copy of Carol's diary and was reading it on the air I was practically screaming: "How did he get it and who the hell does he think he is interpreting her thoughts and feelings to fit his own theories!?!" That one stunt, in our opinion, just negates anything else he has to say; it was childish, vindictive, and so unnecessary, and reveals the axe he has to grind.

They can’t be released into the Wild
Owen Russell it’s literally illegal to release captive born animals into the wild.
They will die if they get released into the wild. That's the entire point of a sanctuary; to protect animals who no longer can live in the wild due to their abuse/captivity. Not saying I defend these people but you can't be upset at the general idea of an animal sanctuary
Their enclosures are enormous compared to where they were before. And they have 24-hour care and vet care and receive an all-meat diet and special medication. I recommend checking out the vacation rotation enclosure. If you thought their cages were small, you probably only saw the lockouts they make on each enclosure so they can properly monitor food and water consumption for the mostly geriatric cats (and get a chance to check the cats up close without touching or stressing them).
Cages suck all around but these animals are usually old and come from previous abuse and have no life skills. Also, where would they go? Their natural habitat in places like India is decimated. The only other option would be euthanasia.

It’s so sad how this popular documentary paints this honest to god sanctuary as explicators. People, or should I say “sheeple” would rather blindly believe this documentary than do any further research themselves. I’ve been following BCR for about 5 years now. Howard and Carole, I have watched a few episodes of Tiger King. I found it despicable the way Joe Exotic and Doc Antle portrayed themselves in this movie. People who have watched Big Cat Rescue have seen the work that Carole has done for the cats. At no time did I believe anything that they said.
Carole, you are the most caring of the big cats. You fight to do right by them. In watching Big Cat Rescue and Daily Big Cat, you and your staff and interns, etc. show how much you care for them. They may live in cages but they live there because of the abuse thy have suffered by owners, circuses, etc. Your cats know that they are loved by the way they respond to the keepers who care for them, how everyone speaks to them in very loving terms. They live in what I would say to be plush surroundings. They can hide from you all, they can be ordinary cats where they look forward to sneaking up on you.
In seeing Joe and Docs petting zoos, those cats are mistreated. There cages are small and barren. How they say that their cats are being properly taken care of is nothing like the care and treatment your cats do.
I have never been there to BCR but I watch the vlogs every day and enjoying the interaction with the cats. Carole, not everyone believes what hey see in the movies, after all, it is just a movie.
Carole, hold you had up and be proud of all that you do for the big cats. Howard, give your lady love a bug hug from me. My Mom taught us as kids, don't believe everything you see in the movies and never trust a liar or a sneak.
I hope this self distancing ends soon so that tours can begin again and the big cats can see their patrons who love them.

Don’t hate me, but I think everybody is in the wrong in Tiger king, yeah it’s definitely sensational in many ways, and yes joe was entertaining as heck, but it’s clear he does seem out of his mind and looks somewhat crazy. Doc was a perverted creep, who was very clear in wrong doing from exploiting women, to having multiple relationships.Carol, from what I have seen, does not seem to be much better than joe, as her cages feel/look rather small, and she still allows visitors by pay to watch and look at the animals, which I have to say is much better than joe and docs performance on many levels, but is still pushy in nature. And of course, the husband fiasco, I think there is definitely something fishy behind it, rather it be foul play, or something else, I don’t know. But I could see how it was made out probably to be more sensational than it actually was, but there is still something wrong with the entire investigation and disappearance.overall, I think everybody is in the wrong on tiger king, and most definitely questionable in their morals, but she does not deserve this level of hate and threats, as it can be worrisome and possibly frighten them, which is not something that is okay at all

I feel so bad. Honestly it did come across that Big Cat Rescue is helping to end cub breeding ya know. I don’t think Carol had any doing in this- looks like he went to CR to be with his new gf. I respect and agree with Big Cat Rescue's mission, but don't they also have their own zoo with big cats that are shown to the public, generating revenue? Is their zoo only filled with cats that grew up their whole lives dependent on humans, and thus can't be rereleased? Have any cats rescued been able to be returned to their "natural" habitat? I'm genuinely asking not trying to be rude.

I watched the series. It was awful! I've been following Big Cat Rescue for at least 8 years. Carole Baskin has poured her heart and soul into ending the trade of big cats. I've personally emailed with her, and designed a couple of items for the gift shop. She is a genuinely kind person. I could see from the beginning to the end of that series, that Carole would never have participated in such sensationalist garbage. This is not an attack in the slightest, but could I ask why you guys keep your cats in cages? And you call out other big cat owners for doing the same? Also, I'm no expert, but the cages you guys put them in seem kind of small. Are there any plans the renovate them?

It's illegal to set them free, and they would die in the wild as they have no survival skills
Lexi B I think the criticism is more for the forced breeding and animal abuse that goes into making these animals accessible to the public. The cages are a requirement for anyone who owns big cats.
Ojogbane Amedu I think big cats should only be in real zoos. Ours is not AZA aprobed as we have a leopard that gets extremely stressed by being in big cages and we have tried several times all the other animals have absolutely giant cages

That's why I'm so sceptical of any "documentary" on Netflix. They are purely for entertainment and to keep people watching so Netflix can make even more cash. They don't want to inform people on what's really going on. Sadly, so many people don't watch them critically. Thank you so much for your work! Seeing these cats and all the other animals in these private zoos broke my heart so many times. Don't understand how anyone can support these people.

I fell in love with your work and always divulged it to my acquaintances.

Having seen this series over and over again the only victims of this series are the animals. Nobody is better than the other. As entertaining as Joe Exotic was he’s no saint, let’s be clear of that. Jeff Lowe is a con man and will eventually join Joe in jail. Doc Antle is running a cult but won’t own up to it. From what the series has shown about you I get and respect your mission to protect the Tigers. I feel awful that that Motley Crew of characters tried to plot your murder and there’s no excuse for their actions. What has me upset is that you broke down a man that had nothing after you won your lawsuit and it seemed you weren’t going to stop until you take the underpants of his backside. What also has me a little miffed is in the series you even mentioned that after years of people giving up hours/years of volunteering at BCR you don’t know half their names. Do you even take the time to get to know them?!! If you have been truly misrepresented by this series then I say bring a lawsuit against Netflix and the producers of this series. In the end, the truth will come to light. All the best.

What do you do as a company if you reach your goal and this is all over? I mean what if one day it’s all made illegal? No more breeding? Eventually you wouldn’t have cats right? Do you sit back and retire on your profits made from these cats or do you send it to help these cats in the wild, do you give back to what made you?
+Skilledear865, Our goal is to put ourselves out of business. We want the captive breeding, cub petting and private ownership to end. Our happiest day will be when the last cage is empty! We are working hard to get the Big Cat Public Safety Act passed to stop the private possession of big cats and cub petting stopped. The federal bill will hopefully pass this year and cub petting will stop and the need to breed will end. We have not bred since the 1990s. Thank you Howard, Carol and staff of BCR. The misinformation, speculation and blatant misrepresentation of facts unfortunately has a tendency to spread like wildfire. Please know that those of us who support BCR, ADI and other accredited rescue and sanctuary groups are doing our best to help educate those who receive their information from poorly written shows such as Tiger King. I have not seen it, and never will. I will be writing to Netflix conveying my disgust. I may just cancel my subscription as well.

Many "sanctuaries" are pseudo-sanctuaries that may call themselves a sanctuary but actually make money from cub petting and breeding and selling cubs (CubTruth.com). We rescue abused, abandoned and neglected big cats who have been relinquished or seized by authorities to live out the rest of their lives here. Because big cats born in captivity can never go free they will always live in a cage (BigCatRescue.org/gofree). We are also a not for profit sanctuary who has been recognized by Charity Navigator (CharityNavigator.org). We are working to end the private possession of big cats and cub petting in the US so no more cats will have to live in cages for life. I am amazed how deceitful Eric Goode & Rebecca Chiffin were to you. I am a Big Cat Rescue supporter and I know Carole's motivation is always to care for big cats---the BCR cats, cats in the wild and especially the cats that suffer in horrible conditions in backyards, roadside zoos, fake sanctuaries and professional zoos. Everyone who works, volunteers and interns at BCR are motivated by Carole's unselfish derivation to all big cats. The bobcat rescue is a prime example. Carole doesn't deserve the horrible things being said about her from people who believes the lies in the Netflix documentary. Eric and Rebecca are sellouts not journelists.
If you don't think this documentary did huge damage to the cub petting and second rate zoo you're delusional. I would never go to one of those cat places after watching tiger king. He's just tied up in the fact his wifes personal issues
